nearly two months in
I often run into my staircase neighbour, Zack, in our shared kitchen. I would describe the Level 1 ‘G’ Staircase Kitchen as a generally empty and oddly calm liminal space. It is a long room. At one end is a U-shaped kitchen. At the other end is a lonely freezer and a sit-in diner-style table with only one seated side. Sitting on the cushioned bench at the table, you look out onto a marvellous autumn scene. Tall yellowy billowing trees that hark to Dr Seuss sway in pink and purple and sometimes creamy blue paddlepop skies. One evening, Zack (G13) was in the kitchen when I shuffled in around 6 pm. He had the kettle on for another pot of herbal tea, and I unpacked my ALDI shop from my big, pink Percy Pig Marks & Spencers bag (courtesy of Mum: legend). I’m sampling the protein yoghurt range. The ALDI here considerately offers us three consistencies of protein yoghurt: mousse, liquid smoothie, and slightly cementy-yoghurt in a pouch! The jury is still out. More to come.
While I tucked mango and strawberry pouches into the blue bucket on my assigned shelf, Zack reflected on the politics of our ruthless shared college laundry system. We related to the experience of finding our clothes dumped on a dusty machine top or, worse still, on the grimy floor. The Act of Laundry is now a thrilling rush. Sometimes it’s a scintillating whodunnit. I considered a weary 19-year-old reaching into the dryer - not yet finished beeping done-done-done-done - to move my delicates. The image is upsetting! Lesson: get to your drying at least 2 minutes before it is done.
I now do my washing in the wee small hours. I have flirted with the idea of walking to a coin laundry. I could take a book. It’d be chic. Kind of 90s of me. But it’s been getting colder lately, and quickly. Dad often tells me, ‘That’s the wind coming from Siberia.’ The evenings are so chilly now that streetlight and moonlight glimmers on dead autumn leaves on the frosted ground. It is quite beautiful. My evening walks are lined with sodden carpets of glitter.

I'm just gonna put this out there into the ethers;
Someone somewhere must have started to collect correspondences for specific strains of weed right? A sativa may have different magickal properties than an indica; and even moreso a hybrid. I'm assigning my own correspondences to Wedding Cake, my go-to strain. I also want to assign some to Mango G13 which is a new favorite. Both are hybrids but clearly affect me differently, which is why I believe they have their own correspondences.
Also, I wonder if carts of wax be charged with crystals? Could I just roll other herbs into a joint to smoke along with my pen? Can edibles be charged the same way?

12 Things You Should Know About SweetWater Brewing Company
Tumblr media
West Coast-style beer first flowed into Atlanta when Freddy Bensch and Kevin McNerney opened SweetWater Brewing Company in 1997. The hoppy, resinous brews were heavily influenced by the co-founders’ previous brewing experiences in California and Colorado — along with a certain herb that’s popular there.
Starting out selling growlers out of an old Honda station wagon, and guided by the brand philosophy “don’t float the mainstream,” SweetWater made a splash on college campuses, and soon began flowing in Atlanta bars. The brewery has spent nearly a quarter-century crafting out-of-the-ordinary ales (and lagers) that ultimately secured it a spot among the top craft brewing companies in the U.S., at No. 14 as of 2020.
Ready to swim against the current? Dive in with these 12 things to know about SweetWater Brewing Company.
SweetWater brews with sticky herbs.
From its long running flagship, 420 Extra Pale Ale, to more recent labels such as Hop Hash Easy IPA and the limited-edition Fresh Sticky Nugs, there’s a clear thread throughout SweetWater’s hoppy, heady beers. (Hint: It’s weed.) It even has a special series of beers dedicated to the medicinal herb, with each beer made to harness the aroma, flavor, and theoretical vibes of various marijuana strains, naming each release according to its corresponding strain.
SweetWater’s weed-inspired series launched in 2018 with G13 IPA, designed to simulate the flavors of the marijuana strain of the same name. Brewed with Simcoe and Columbus hops, the beer also features G13-strain terpenes and hemp flavors. Four other beers later joined the series: Mango Kush Wheat Ale, Trainwreck Hazy Double IPA, Super Silver Haze Lager, and Jack Herer Harvest Ale, named for a cannabis activist.
The 420 Strain Series is like a liquid family reunion.
Hops, or Humulus lupulus, are believed to share ancestry with Cannabis sativa (marijuana). Humulus and Cannabis are two genera in the family Cannabaceae. Both share similar scents and tastes, and SweetWater has been determined to celebrate this heady connection.
(Disclaimer: The ingredients only lend to flavor and aroma. Since there’s no THC, no one’s getting high off the 420 Strain Series. That’s either good news or bad news depending on how you look at it.)
SweetWater arrived in Atlanta with Olympic-level expectations.
Bensch and McNerney met while attending the University of Colorado and scrubbing kegs at local breweries. They graduated and parted ways, Bensch going to California to study brewing and McNerney taking up brewing jobs around Colorado. A few years later, in the summer of 1996, Bensch packed his dog and everything he owned into his van and drove to Atlanta. The city was preparing for the Olympic games, an epic event that made the city shine.
The buzz of activity around the Olympic games appealed to Bensch, who saw an opportunity to bring West Coast-style craft beer to a new corner of the country that had not been exposed to it. While there were a few small breweries operating in the city at the time, the craft beer scene was still pretty fresh — and open to possibilities. He called up McNerney and told him to come east so they could open a brewery. McNerney made his way to Atlanta, and the pair started building out the space to open less than a year later.
Its flagship docked on a special date.
For three and a half months, Bensch and McNerney brewed up a storm. But they had to wait for the perfect day to brew what would eventually become their flagship pale ale: April 20, 1997. Bensch and McNerney brewed 420 Extra Pale Ale with Cascade and Centennial hops, two hop varietals that originated in the Pacific Northwest that deliver floral, herbal, and fresh aromas and flavors. They doubled down by dry-hopping — remember, this was almost 25 years ago — amplifying the aroma with Cascade hops to add a bit of citrus to the mix.
The flavorful but easy-drinking brew grew in popularity fast. By 2002, it had earned a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival, which hosts the largest beer competition in the country.
SweetWater to the rescue?
The original brewery opened in a West Atlanta warehouse located on Fulton Industrial Boulevard. The space had previously served as a 911 emergency dispatch center. That meant, for one, they probably had to sage the place. Other than that, there was a lot to do to turn it into a fully operational brewery.
Bensch, McNerney and their first employees got their hands dirty building out the location. Whatever they could do themselves, they did it. They installed plumbing, set up the glycol, and even wired the electrical system. It took a lot of hard work but Bensch, McNerney and their small team pulled it all together in time for their first brew in January of 1997.
Save water, drink beer.
All brewers need good, clean water. Bensch, who studied environmental sciences at the University of Colorado — and then, you know, named his brewery after a local waterway — is keenly aware of this. That’s why in 2006 SweetWater launched its Save Our Water initiative, partnering with nonprofits like Waterkeeper Alliance to raise money toward protecting rivers, bays, sounds, and other bodies of water locally and around the country.
In 2019, the brewery crafted a summer seasonal, Kick Plastic Lager, in collaboration with Costa sunglasses, as a way to raise money for water conservation groups. A percentage of profits from the beer’s sales went to Waterkeeper Alliance, Coastal Conservation Association, and Trout Unlimited.
‘Stop that truck! They stole our beer!’
In 2016, a thirsty thief stole two full trailers of SweetWater beer. They basically just drove off with them from the brewery’s parking lot early one morning and nearly got away with 3,300 cases of 420 Extra Pale Ale, SweetWater IPA, Goin’ Coastal IPA, and Take Two Pils.
Thanks to GPS tracking, the brewers were able to locate the trailers: one at another warehouse while the other was at a private home; both were empty. Eventually, with help from Atlanta police, about 20,000 of the missing 78,000 bottles were found. All of it had to be dumped, unfortunately, since no one knew where that beer had been. The rest of the missing beer was never found so either someone drank 58,000 bottles of beer themselves or they had a heck of a party.
Some beers stay fresh nugs, others grow into trees.
When SweetWater expanded its brewery in 2016, it made room for The Woodlands Project, a barrel-aging program that allows brewers to experiment with aging beers in giant oak casks called foeders (pronounced foo-der). That facility, located right next to the production brewery, houses six of these, each designed to hold 88 hectoliters (about 2,325 gallons). All together, the towering barrels are capable of aging almost 13,950 gallons of what will eventually become funky-fresh sours and Belgian-style farmhouse ales. (There are also hundreds of other regular-sized barrels in the “woodlands.”)
Six limited-release brews, including Sinner’s Son, a bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout, and Through the Brambles, a blackberry sour, have come from The Woodlands thus far.
A kayak trip inspired the brewery’s name.
During his initial visit to Atlanta, Bensch says he found inspiration while kayaking down a creek. It was (wait for it) the Sweetwater Creek, a tributary to the Chattahoochee River. He chose to name the brewery after the creek, and to camel-cap the “W” in the brand name, to emphasize the very precious ingredient used to brew their beer: water.
Sweetwater Creek State Park, located where the creek flows past the George H. Sparks Reservoir, is a destination for fishing, hiking, and kayaking. It’s located just a few miles from the brewery’s original location.
What’s with the fish?
It’s a rainbow trout, actually, and his name is Trouser. Bensch and McNerney, and many of their early employees, spent a lot of their time together fishing and drinking beer. So when it was time to design labels for the beers they brewed, it made sense to plaster an image of their favorite fish on the bottle. To this day, most of SweetWater’s packages feature a rainbow trout in some form or another. Believe it or not, the fish also has its own theme song.
SweetWater throws a massive, grassy festival every year.
SweetWater hosted its first 420 Fest in 2004, headlined by jam band Tea Leaf Green. Every year since then, the brewery has invited fans from far and wide to join in on the fun on or around April 20 (420). The event takes place at Centennial Olympic Park and draws more than 50,000 people each year, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle.
The 2020 festival has been canceled but SweetWater has already scheduled the next 420 Fest for April 23 through 25, 2021.
‘SweetWater, with a splash of SweetWater, please.’
In early 2020, SweetWater confirmed that the brewery is looking to get into the booze business. The brewery got its liquor license approved, which gives it the ability to craft and sell spirits from its current location. What and how SweetWater will be distilling is still to be determined.

According to a Gallup poll, 12% of all Americans, or just over 39 million people smoke marijuana.
But even if it is mainstream and accepted, information isn’t always readily available. You may want to consume it but don’t know what the most popular marijuana strains are.
That’s where we come in. We know it and you want to know it.
Seven of The Most Popular Marijuana Strains Ever
All strains of marijuana plants come from one of two genera: Indica or Sativa. Over time growers have been able to make hybrids via cross-pollination of the two.
These two original genera have unique characteristics and they are as follows:
Indica
A relaxing, downtempo experience. Indica provides a calming deep body experience
Sativa
Much more of a generating, energy-based experience. If Indica is a body high then you can say Sativa is mental.
The Top Contenders
1. Acapulco Gold—Sativa
Many swear by its reputation as being one of the greatest strains of marijuana ever raised.
It owes its namesake to the resemblance it has to nuggets of gold before being broken up. When broken to be consumed it releases a toffee-like odor.
Acapulco is treasured for its uplifting properties, leaving the consumer in an energetic bright mood and is a child strain of the Mexican family.
2. Blue Dream—Sativa
And extremely popular varietal all across the United States, Blue Dream is a Sativa focused hybrid of Blueberry and Haze.
Because it is a hybrid of both Sativa and Indica there is a pleasant mixture of both a body high as well as the mental stimulation.
Neither overpowers and allows for a very calm, relaxing experience.
3. Bubba Kush—Indica
The “body high” aspects of an Indica can be better found nowhere else. The Bubba Kush is the absolute best example of them. It has a reputation for having near tranquilizing effects.
But do not mistake these for an uncomfortable experience, this variety is extremely popular.
The story goes that in 1996 the OG Kush had cross-pollinated with another Indica variety in a nearby growing area and ended up producing Bubba.
4. Chemdawg—Hybrid
A legend in the growing world, Chemdawg is the originator of countless other top names like Sour Diesel and OG Kush.
However, its potency for providing a powerful mental experience only adds to its esteemed status.
You will always know when this variety is nearby due to its unique, fuel-like odor.
5. G13—Indica
The strain of FBI and secret agent myth! There are (almost certainly false) stories about the strain claiming it stems from experiments involving the government growing superweed plants.
True or not, G13 is a powerhouse of an Indica. There is very few that measure up to the experience that it will give the consumer.
6. Green Crack—Sativa
Quite the refreshing selection, a child of Skunk no.1, Green is full of citrus enjoyment. The odor it emits and the taste both hint at mango, making it perfect for a summer day outdoors.
A very refreshing Sativa that, despite the name, has nothing to do with crack!
7. Ingrid—Indica
The last is gaining more popularity as of late, one of the more visually interesting of the plants. It is recognized by a tightly packed bud and incredibly bright, neon green flowers.
Ingrid will be a perfect companion on a day you need to take time to slow down and meditate or just take in the world. The high is a very subtle, warming experience.

Cannabis Breeding Banter with Connoisseur Genetics
Stoney Tark of High Times Reports:
Behind beautiful buds are amazing breeders and even better genetics.
Firmly established in the U.K and Dutch scenes as a purveyor of the finest cannabis geneticson the planet, High Times sat down with OJ from Amsterdam-based Connoisseur Genetics. Producing close to one million feminized seeds per year, we talk to him about the breeding scene, his influences, genetics, how he crafts his seeds, and what his top tips are when it comes to making a consistent, reliable, and delicious end product.
High Times: How different is the U.K breeding scene compared to America’s?
OJ: The American scene is very different to the UK scene as we are entirely illegal and still totally underground. We have no dispensaries so can’t trade or access clones as easily as the USA. It is tough to operate in the UK and stay under the radar. We do have one advantage, and that is cannabis seeds are legal, so we can trade in them but not produce them. This is the frustrating part of our challenging laws.
When creating a new strain, what are the desired traits you look for as a breeder?
When creating a new strain, I’m trying to merge some of the best qualities of each plant into each other and in my case, focusing on the aroma, taste, and effect as my priority. I also clone only plants that I’m just trying to produce the strain in feminized form. This is done by selfing the clone to create an S1, for people who don’t have access to these special clones, yet want the genetic in seed form now have an easy to work with feminized seed. For male plants I’m looking for the trait of the plant I plan to capture. I consider leaf shape to indicate pheno and structure of the plant. My number one goal for me is aroma, meaning I always select a stinky male that throws off that particular scent.
Can you explain what S1 means when breeding and how female pollen is produced?
An F1 or first generation is crossing two unrelated landraces together to create hybrid vigor. However, S1 is where you take a clone and reverse it using chemicals or Silver.
The process is logistically much harder than regular male breeding, due to the female pollen producing a lot less viable pollen than a regular male plant. This can result in a much smaller percentage of final seeds meaning a much lower conversion rate to regular seeds.

What are your breeding facilities like and how is everything quality controlled?
I have multiple breeding spots that are used to produce my seeds. Each place does one unique reversal or male project at a time, to guarantee there is no cross-contamination of pollen. For smaller testing spaces, I use males or reverse female clones that I have not used before. Once the choice clones have been selected from the smaller rooms, they are then used in my main breeding room. This ensures only the best of the best stock is used. The way I store pollen is in an airtight container in the fridge, but I would advise to use fresh pollen and only stored pollen if no other options are available. The viability rate of the pollen dies over time, which can be a total waste of time as a breeder.
What are your top tips for any up and coming breeders out there?
My top tips are: breed for the people and not for your taste. Unless you are home breeding for fun, then this is different. Try and be unique not like every other company, come with some exclusive flavors and effect. This will allow you to stand out from the rest at a commercial level. Get out there and try what’s going in the top dispensary, coffee shop, social club and cup events. Then you can know if your stuff is the best of the best and not just the best in your circle
How long have you been breeding for, and how would you best describe your work?
I first started breeding just for fun around 2005, but began selling seeds around 2009 through ICMAG.com which I have a forum there. I best describe my work as made by a connoisseur for connoisseurs focusing on taste and effect. This means growing with the best organic mediums and zero chemicals.
Who have been your biggest influences in breeding?
My biggest influence was Nevil of the seed bank Sensi Seeds, Greenhouse Seeds and Mr. Nice, as well as Soma of Soma seeds. Neville is a genius and responsible for over 90% of any top end plants that floated around Europe between the 1980 – 2005. He is the real Haze king producing the best plants that I have ever seen or smoked. Soma used to have his buds for sale in Amsterdam coffeeshops years back, and they were another level, so tasty it was like you were eating fresh fruit. They were grown organic in a hydro filled city, and they stood above everything. Soma’s New York City Diesel (Old Red Grapefruit cut) is in my top 3 ever and fighting that 1st place as the most delicious organic cannabis around. Long live the red grapefruit cut and let it find its way to me one day!
When did your pursuit for the original Hazes begin and can you tell us more about the origin of Haze in Amsterdam?
My love for Haze started after smoking the Northern Lights # 5 Haze from seed, then traveling to Amsterdam and smoking and growing all the best Haze I came across there. The origins of Haze started when Sam the Skunkman came to Holland from the USA with seeds in the late 70’s or early 80’s and shared some seeds with Neville who went to went to work like a D.J cutting and mixing it up. Known for best creating the world famous NL #5 Haze cuts that are responsible for 90% of Haze today.
What are your top five strains you’ve made?
That is quite tricky, but I would say number one is Super Silver Sour Diesel Haze. An Original release of SSSDH that I got from Reservoir Seeds and have made F2 for Reservoir seeds. I created the feminized line of the original SSSDH, which is sold through my seedbank. The second is Strawberry Cookies, which is a cross of Strawberry Cough x Girl Scout Cookies reversed. Third would be Hey Dave, who is a cross of OG Affie x OG Kush by Raskal Seeds x Casey Jones reversed. My fourth strain is the Diesel Dipped Cookies, who is a cross of the original Diesel x Girl Scout Cookies reversed. Finally, I would say Nevil The G which is Nevil Mango by MR Nice seeds x G13 Haze male ( Soma’s cut )
