Directors commentary: sweet junction

This could be kind of fun to do about some stories! Thank you for asking for one!

I think the biggest thing that got "cut" from Sweet Junction was the fact that I originally wanted to keep going with it. That's actually how I ended up going into the sequel (One-Horse Town, now, and previously titled Grass Roots, though I never liked or wanted that title, and I only used it because some people in the fandom insisted).

I originally wanted Sweet Junction to be something of a saga that would go on for a while longer.

I ended up cutting it for a few reasons. I was afraid the length would be daunting, and I thought, by splitting it, it might make it seem more approachable. I also thought that it would give those who weren't enjoying the story (but were determined to read a story they didn't like until the end) the opportunity to stop reading. I also figured it could leave the story with that "ending" for anyone who didn't want the rest of the "saga."

In hindsight, there is one aspect of the book (because that's really what it is) that I would remove if I could. It's been years, so I'm assuming most of the references won't be spoilers. The point where Daryl reacts to the break-up by going after the woman that he really doesn't want, is something that I would remove. It was never really a part that I wanted, but I was influenced by the thought that everyone wanted that kind of drama (which was very popular in that early era of Caryl fanfic). I don't care for it, but it's there now. One fun point about Sweet Junction is that it was the introduction to Merle and Andrea. At the time, in Caryl fanfiction, it was very common to see Merle with Beth (and sometimes Maggie, Michonne, or even Patricia). Now, I'm not telling anyone they're wrong, and I believe in ship and let ship, but that really didn't work for me. I needed someone that I thought was a better match for Merle. I started writing Merle and Andrea when many people hated Andrea and they were ready to hate the pair just because. LOL I really ended up falling in love with the Mandrea ship, though, and I've been writing it for years and hundreds of stories. Now, I even see lots of other people who write the ship, so it's fun to have set a trend there and set that little ship sailing.

For the most part, however, I was pleased with Sweet Junction. It's honestly one of the few that I couldn't wax poetic about how much of the story got derailed for one reason or another. Now you know, though, that my initial desire was to simply keep going, and not to break where I did to lead into the sequel.
