#man melville would have LOVED oceangate#i feel like i’m always returning to moby dick after major life events#and it’s so interesting to see which passages stand out to me at the time#i genuinely choked up reading this right now#idk if it’s because i’m visiting the sea a lot and visualizing the brutality with which it would destroy me if it had the chance#or if it’s climate doomerism reminding me that we’ll all be underwater soon#the continuation of this quote reads: ‘noah’s flood is not yet subsided; two-thirds of the fair world it yet covers.’#i tell myself that i go to the sea because it’s peaceful#but really i think there is something appealing about the indiscrimatory violence of the waves and the wake#it’s the surge of adrenaline that you get standing on the edge of a cliff ykwim#that sudden rushing awareness of how fragile this all is#like none of our problems really matter#the sea will insult and murder us all anyway
