OKAY I HAVENT DONE ONE OF THESE IN AGES BUT GUESS WHAT BITCHES

WE’RE TALKIN ABOUT CUPHEAD AND MUGMAN

AS IN

(This game has been out for quite a while. I know. I’m on a mac, so i could only start playing it this October. shhhhhhhhhhhh)

Basically, for context, it’s this awesome game that’s all hand-drawn and made in that 30′s animation style that kills me every time. It’s hard as all hell, but that only makes it better?? Like, it’s so much better when you beat a boss if it you 200 times, but that’s neither her nor there

Anyway, the main story follows Cuphead and Mugman, these two sweet boys from Inkwell Isle, who somehow end up on the wrong side of the tracks and at the devil’s casino, where, blinded by cash, end up betting away their souls to the devil. After begging for their lives, the devil gives the two of them 24 hours to collect the souls of a whole list of unsavory sorts who’ve made contracts, saying that if they bring him all the souls in time, he’ll let them go. So the rest of the game then is these cute lil cup boys fighting impossibly hard bosses and collecting their souls, then ultimately fighting the devil and freeing everyone who’s made contracts.

SO

1. Jack and Jesse are Cuphead and Mugman. Dumb, stupid brothers who end up in the Devil’s Casino, thinking it can’t possibly actually be run by the devil himself, and basically trying to one up each other all night, before some mysterious stranger sees that Jesse’s been rolling really well, and asks him to roll one more time, for the whole casino and all the money inside it against his soul. Jess, over confident and half thinking it’s a joke takes the bet as soon as Jack starts to actually seem a little bit wary.

Jack of course then joins Jess on his whole quest to save his soul, but never shuts up about how stupid he was and the reason they have to fight all these people in the first place.

2. Jack is cuphead (Maybe Violet/Caoil are mugman? who knows) but Jess is actually in the roll of my personal favorite, King Dice. (He’s got a song. Give it a listen!!! did I mention the sountrack is all old school jazz, and actually knocked it out of the park??) King Dice is the devil’s right hand man, technically the owner of the casino, and v likely both the snazziest and scariest part of the whole game. Example A:

So, based on what lore there is, there’s basically two interpretations of him:

A) He and the Devil are real tight. Either True Bros or there are people that ship them, and I can sorta see it in that “Ooooh aren’t we evil! We’re gonna watch the world burn, together!!!” sort of way. (Consider- Skittery is the Devil. Just a thought)

B) Based on some hints about his eyes sometimes being just black, vs having green irises, I’ve seen some theories that the Devil has him possessed, or is controlling his mind, or something like that. Like, he just happened to be a slightly seedy casino owner who somehow lost out to the devil and is now being used for... whatever purpose you think the devil might want. Arguably these two aren’t mutually exclusive, and I do kind of like the idea of Jack finding his long lost brother via the devil. Also I do love the pain of Jack having to fight Jesse on his own turf, where he’s loyal to the devil and has no clue who Jack is, but once the devil is defeated, we see Jess, beat up and holding together a tattered purple suit having that moment of “... Jack? You... You found me?”
