Okay so I watched these two One Piece movies over the past couple of nights and the different experiences that I have gone through with both of these movies... First of all... I had A LOT of fun watching both of them (tbh more fun than when I watched the One Piece: Red) and I want to watch it again just from recalling it. I won't go super in depth, this is just me going on a tangent about em.
One Piece Gold (left) was a lot of fun, I loved the premise where they entered this huge ass island/boat city of gold filled with entertainment and casinos (I'm like "ohhh they're on the strip! LOL). I liked the build up of the plot and backstory of the villain. Tbh I think this movie did a way better job at building up the villain in comparison to One Piece Red where it just... IMMEDIATELY went into action??? I enjoy being able to immerse myself in the specific plot and feel of a movie, and so I think this movie did better in that aspect. ALSO, THERE WERE SO MANY OUTFIT CHANGES IN THIS MOVIE!!! It's so cute that for a number of them, they're all matching??? Also... um... Zoro in the beginning of the movie where he just had the baseball cap and he's shirtless... uhhhhh he looked so good wtf... wished they had him in that for longer LOL I also thought Luffy looked SO CUTE in the all white outfit with the orange shades and cowboy hat. Really enjoyed the Sabo appearance in this, tho wished I saw him crush a guy's head!! LOOOL Anyway, really liked this movie.
One Piece movie 6: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island is what I watched last night after holding it off since FOREVER AND TBH I DON'T THINK I'LL LIKE A ONE PIECE MOVIE MORE THAN THIS ONE LOOOL. So the main reason why I wanted to watch this movie was primarily because of the ART STYLE. I LOVE HOW CUTE AND EXAGGERATED IT IS. The flat colors, lanky limbs, thin lines, angles, and expressiveness UGH EVERYTHING. I kept wondering why it felt so familiar and it's because the director of this movie is Mamoru Hosoda! And he directed movies like Mirai (my Goro projection movie), Summer Wars, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Wolf Children (I watched this movie when I was in a 3 hour life drawing class and was bawling), etc. ANYWAY-- his influence was STRONG in this movie because the thing I like about his style is the human INTERACTIONS he has between the characters and showing the closeness, with their touches, or expression, and even utilizing the awkward silences in the conversations. It was SO nice seeing the Straw Hats interact in this kind of way and I am just IN LOVE WITH HOW LUFFY LOOKED IN THIS MOVIE HE WAS SO CUTE I LOVE HIM!!! I also love how when Nami wanted Luffy's attention, she would just GRAB HIS FACE. So anyway, as I was looking more into who was involved in this movie, I saw that Masahiro Ito did the screenplay. I had to do a double take on that name. BITCH. OF COURSE HIS NAME WAS FAMILIAR BECAUSE THAT MAN IS THE ART DIRECTOR FOR TEAM SILENT? MR PYRAMID HEAD CREATOR MAN HIMSELF. WHAT IS HE DOING WRITING THE SCREENPLAY FOR THIS ONE PIECE MOVIE. The whole time I'm just thinking "Oh my god. This movie is going to get REALLY weird." And my god... for One Piece/shounen standards... yeah. There are scenes where I had to turn around to Hun while I was watching and go "... You seeing this." LOL LIKE... I KNOW THIS MOVIE WILL NOT BE EVERYONE'S CUP OF TEA BUT I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT??? It was like watching the weirdest collab One Piece fanfiction come to life. I just really appreciate the direction and vibe this movie had and seeing One Piece in this kind of style. Honestly would love if other anime directors wanted to take their own spin of One Piece and just make a movie. Yah well that's my tangent, I love One Piece LOL
#i just... i needed to talk about it#i could've talked about gold more but the baron omatsuri movie is just fresh in my head#luffy is my favorite shounen protagonist out of all the ones i've gotten into#it's a commitment but to feel this way towards a character... worth it to me LOOOOL#ANYWAY back to drawing#x

random rec list :)
These are various things that I have enjoyed a lot over the years. Check under the cut for more thorough notes/warnings, because some of these are really built for specific audiences. Linked to book titles is the storygraph page, where you can also find TWs. Link to poetry are the poems themselves.
books
House of Leaves, Mark Z. Danielewski
Piranesi, Susanna Clarke
The Trial, Franz Kafka. (I don't have access to my copy anymore, so I don't know the translator of my edition, unfortunately)
The Brothers Karamazov, Fyodor Dostoevsky. I have read both the Pevear & Volokhonsky translation and the David McDuff translation. Don't have a preference between the two, I think.
An Iliad, Lisa Peterson and Denis O'Hare.
Beloved, Toni Morrison
poetry
If You Call a Wolf a Wolf, Kaveh Akbar
Hanif Abdurraqib's writing, particularly They Can't Kill Us Until They Kill Us and A Little Devil in America.
"Miss You. Would like to take a walk with you." Gabrielle Calvocoressi
"I Didn't Apologize to the Well," Mahmoud Darwish, tr. Fady Joudah
"Angels," Russell Edson
"On the Death of Friends in Childhood," Donald Justice
"Chou Nu Er: Composed on Wall at Mount Bo on Way," 辛弃疾 Xin Qiji, tr. unknown.
Poem 66 in Hidden Music, Rumi, tr. Maryam Mafi and Azima Melita Kolin.
manga/comics/etc.
The following works by Nihei Tsutomu: BLAME!, NOiSE, Abara, Biomega, tr. include: Melissa Tanaka, Stephen Paul, Sheldon Drzka, John Werry.
Mushishi, Urushibara Yuki, tr. William Flanagan
Witch Hat Atelier, Shirahama Kamome, tr. Stephen Kohler
Uzumaki, Ito Junji, tr. Yuji Oniki
Mob Psycho 100, ONE, tr. Kumar Sivasubramanian (might not be the only translator, but I'm not looking through all the volumes)
shows/movies + one podcast:
Revolutionary Girl Utena, dir. Ikuhara Kunihiko
Angel's Egg, dir. Oshii Mamoru (in collaboration with Amano Yoshitaka)
Cowboy Bebop, dir. Watanabe Shinichiro
A Writer's Odyssey, dir. Lu Yang
Wolf 359, produced by Kinda Evil Genius Productions, LLC
notes on book selections: For HoL, TBK, and Beloved, I'd recommend checking out the trigger warnings. None of these books are especially light, and definitely with HoL, Piranesi and a bit with The Trial as well, you don't know a lot going on. So you have to be okay with putting in the effort to understand these stories and going along with the ride. The Trial was technically unfinished, so after a point, it's the chapters we have from Kafka and in kind of out of order.
notes on poetry: I know some people may not like Hanif Abdurraqib's style, but I personally adore it. I have not read all of his works either, but he is a very solid poet and writer for me.
notes on manga and such: The thing you have to understand about Nihei's works (those that are listed) is that there aren't clear answers for a lot. Especially BLAME!, where there's very minimal dialogue. You won't understand everything on the first on the first read for BLAME! and that's good! NOiSE also doesn't answer a lot and Abara, for some, may seem like it ends on a cliffhanger. Biomega is the iffiest one here because the ending is really rushed. There was clearly meant to be more, but there just wasn't the space to take care of it before it had to end. In all his works listed, there is a lot of violence. WHA is in progress and I haven't caught up in ages, but it's a really solid story so far. Uzumaki is horror, so check out the warnings for that before going into it, if needed. MP100 is also pretty solid. Not without some faults, of course, but I greatly enjoy it and also have a fond spot for the REIGEN spinoff in my heart.
notes on shows and the rest: Ok. So. RGU. really look at the tws for this. The more comprehensive post I can't find, but this is a good summary. Definitely would not recommend it to everyone and there are aspects I am not a fan of (to say the least) but it is a very impactful story and means a lot. Angel's Egg is also not for everyone, but more so because it's a very silent movie and you will not get answers. It's a movie where you craft your own meaning and enjoy the experience. It can also feel very slow. Cowboy Bebop my beloved. That is all I will say. It can also feel slow to some people, but the ending. omg. A Writer's Odyssey may not be the most put together narrative-wise BUT I watched it when sick and fatigued out of my mind, so it takes a place here for being a movie I still remember pretty well. A father will do anything to find his daughter again, even if it means killing this random guy who only seems to be a novelist... except, isn't it strange how his story seems to impact reality as well? Wolf 359 is a podcast but MY GOD is it good. Listen to it. please.

Why is it that I have a hard time understanding how I’m supposed to “separate art from artist” or to enjoy anything that has objective flaws
I'm not an expert at stuff like this, nor am I a philosopher, but I'll try to answer this as best I can. Let's look at some examples:
A lot of terrible people made great works. For example, HP Lovecraft was a huge racist, but the Cthulu mythos is still popular to this day. Besides, he's been dead for centuries, so it's not like he's profiting off it anymore. Another example is Catscratch. Doug Tennapel is a piece of shit, but Catscratch is a good cartoon and can be enjoyed because it doesn't reflect the creator's beliefs. There's no transphobia or hate speech in the cartoon itself.
Art often reflects the creator, but not always. Just look at Junji Ito. His works are dark, but he's a happy man. Contrast that with Hayao Miyazaki, whose works are often perceived as 'comfy' and 'lighthearted' (though once you look past the surface, they cover deep topics such as war), but once you see videos and interviews of the man, you'll see that he is very cynical about the current state of anime. Ito and Miyazaki are both good guys and haven't done anything super awful to my knowledge, but I brought them up as examples of how art can differ from its creator.
However, one's beliefs can be reflected in their art. Take Harry Potter for example. You can't really separate the art from the artist because the series contains racial stereotypes, antisemitic stereotypes, and promotes fatphobia, and that's not even getting into JKR's transphobia which isn't necessarily present in the text, but still.
"Objective flaws" I think are actually subjective. "Flaws" can mean different things to different people. To one person, it can mean poor acting, cheap special effects, weak writing and characters, etc, and to another person, it could mean that the work portrays racism, bigotry, pedo/incest, and other bad stuff in a positive light. In the end, literally, every work out there has "objective flaws." Let's use Sailor Moon as an example. On the one hand, it has its share of poorly written episodes and characters (such as Mamoru, in the 90s version that is). On the other hand, the 90s anime has episodes containing fatshaming (the episode where Usagi wants to lose weight), and a pretty dubious age gap between Usagi and Mamoru (14 and 18). But I still love the show despite these things. I love the show because I love most of the stories, characters, themes, artwork, music, etc. That doesn't mean that I defend the fatshaming episode or 90s!UsaMamo or stuff like that. I know that it's not perfect, but I love it anyways. Besides, the show's premise is about magical girls fighting evil, and fatphobia and age-gap relationships are not core to the premise. (FYI, Mamoru is 16 in the manga, so it's not as bad there) If they were, then I wouldn't like the show at all.
Again, I'm not really good at explaining all of this, so I apologize.

Top 100 Films
I made this list a few days ago after feeling irritated at the predictability and staleness of the Sight & Sound list, but really I think this a good moment for me to make this list for myself. As you will see from my end of year list in a month, the emergence of a continuous type of filmmaking - Tiktok and Douyin filmmakers posting every day, Youtubers posting every few days - presents a new kind of problem for me who actually wants to make lists that do justice to beautiful filmmaking movements. So this may be the last time to even really want to make an all time list that focuses on the indvidual works rather than the directors filmographies as continuous entities. Although I couldn’t make a normal top 10 poll, and it was better in the end to have a 100 poll as an alternative to the full list, I have put in bold 7 films which I would definitely put in a top 10.

Tenshi no Tamago: Searching for meaning.
Spoilers ahead.
As most teenagers do, when I was around 13 years old I was hyperfixated on searching for a sense of deeper meaning in every piece of media I consumed. Being a fan of anime and manga, I went down the "pretentious obscure anime" route: I read whole books of the Bible to wrap my head around the ending of Evangelion, watched anything with the Studio 4°C on it, got into old Japanese painting techniques just to say I appreciated Shōjo Tsubaki on a deeper level, and totally desensitized myself to gore via reading everything Junji Ito and Shintaro Kago had released. I filled notebooks with theories and observations, and started to surround myself only with media that I thought was profound and complex. This is the context in which I found Tenshi no Tamago (天使のたまご ), an 1985 OVA written and directed by Mamoru Oshii. At this point I was already familiar with Oshii's work, and I was an avid Ghost in the Shell fan. However, any expectations I had for this film were shattered, again and again, as I watched it.
I don't want to be misunderstood here, Tenshi no Tamago still is one of my favorite films ever made. But it did shift my perspective on the way I was consuming art and how, in my opinion, I was getting it wrong.
When the ending credits appeared on my computer screen, I found this weird feeling numbing my senses and blocking my thoughts. The only way I can describe it is as an uneasiness of sorts, a void in my stomach I had only gotten close to feeling when I finished watching Serial Experiments Lain, although it wasn't quite the same. The main difference was that I didn't want to go and read about it, I didn't want to organize my thoughts into carefully curated essays to post on the internet. I just wanted to sit with this discomfort, listening to the soundtrack of the film, but not really analyzing it.
Then, of course, my obsession with the film began. I wrote it's japanese title on my wall, I started filling my tumblr blog with gifs from my favorite scenes, I memorized its brief dialogues by heart. At the time I didn't have many friends, and I didn't know anyone who had seen the film, so everything remained inside my head like a buzzing that wouldn't stop. Of course at some point I tried getting into the lore of the film, reading what other people made of it, but they didn't really resonate with me. I got the Noah's Ark references as anyone would, and I could easily make connections between this post apocalyptic world and the others that Oshii had created, and yet it didn't sit right with me. At some point I thought "okay, maybe I'm just dumb and I didn't understand the plot at all".
But later in my life I would realize that over-intellectualizing everything was keeping me from actually enjoying art. You see, I was so caught by this search of deeper meaning, that I wasn't really paying attention to what these pieces of media made me feel. So, whenever I re watch Tenshi no Tamago, I don't try to link every stone fisherman's move to the human condition, neither do I try to break down every word spoken by the two main characters as an allegory to the end of the world. Instead, I watch the shadow fish and the water bottles and I allow myself to feel the emptiness of this abandoned Earth, the eerie sounds of the wind and every thread of the girl's hair moving with it. When I see those last ten minutes after the egg cracks, I focus on the movement of the feathers and the empty beach, and simply enjoy the beautiful pacing of the scene and the harmony it creates alongside the soundtrack.
So, in conclusion, I don't like explaining this film to other people, neither do I care for people explaining it to me. And maybe I truly didn't understand it, maybe I never will. But I'm okay with it, as long as I'm still allowed to watch it over and over again, searching for the unique feeling it can leave me with.
