Will immerse our medals into Ganga, sit on hunger strike at India Gate, say protesting wrestlers
India's top wrestlers, including Sakshee Malikkh, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, said they will immerse their medals into river Ganga on Tuesday and then sit on an indefinite hunger strike at India Gate. Since April 23, the grapplers have been protesting against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh over sexual harassment allegations levelled against him.
Tumblr media
India’s top wrestlers, who were recently detained and removed from their protest site at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, have said they will immerse their medals into river Ganga in Haridwar on Tuesday and then sit on an indefinite hunger strike at India Gate.
Wrestlers including Sakshee Malikkh, Bajrang Punia and Sangeeta Phogat, put out a statement on their respective Twitter handles, saying the grapplers would go to Haridwar and immerse their medals into river Ganga at 6 pm.
“These medals are our lives, our souls. There would be no reason to live after immersing them into the Ganga today. We will stage a hunger strike until death at India Gate after that,” read the statement in Hindi.
Since April 23, the grapplers have been protesting against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over sexual harassment allegations levelled against him by female athletes, including a minor.
Dramatic visuals emerged from the wrestlers’ protest march as hundreds of cops and paramilitary personnel blocked their advance towards Parliament House on May 28. As the protesters tried to breach the security cordon, a fierce tussle broke out — the wrestlers and cops pushed, shoved and grappled with one another.
In the joint statement, the wrestlers said the Prime Minister “who calls us our daughters”, did not even once show his concern for the grapplers. “Rather, he invited the ‘oppressor’ (Brij Bhushan Singh) to the inauguration of the new Parliament building. He even posed for photographs in bright white clothes. We have been stained by this brightness,” it said.
The statement said, “Where is the place for the daughters of India? Have we been reduced to people indulging in mere sloganeering or do we have an agenda to come to power?”
“We are going to immerse these medals into river Ganga… The more sacred we consider the Ganga, the more sacredly we had achieved these medals by toiling hard. These medals are sacred for the whole country and the right place should be in the Ganga itself,” it said.
The protest, which started on April 23, at Jantar Mantar saw heartbreaking visuals on the day of the new Parliament building’s inauguration when Delhi Police cracked down on them in the midst of their march. An FIR was lodged against the wrestlers for taking out the march to the new Parliament building, mentioning that their protest would hamper “national prestige”.
The wrestlers, who resumed their sit-in last month after the first round of protests in January, have been demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan Singh, also a BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Kaisarganj.
Opposition leaders, including Congress’s Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee have condemned the Centre over their inaction against Brij Bhushan Singh.
The WFI chief dismissed the sexual harassment allegations levelled against him by some female grapplers.

Challenges by the gender stereotypes: Female perception in Indian culture
In the vast tapestry of Indian society, with its riches in traditions and cultural diversity, women always have had a central role. However, they were also enclosed in tough gender stereotypes that, for centuries, dictated their roles, behaviors, and opportunities. Today, as India strides forward into progress, women from different parts of the country constantly challenge these stereotypes, rewrite narratives, and stand their ground in this modern world.
Indian society, just like most others, was patriarchal. Women had the status of nothing more than custodians and housewives, heavily restricted to the realm of the domestic sphere. Men were held to be breadwinners and decision-makers. These roles were further fortified through cultural and religious practice and the common sense and mores of the time.
Old perceptions have such leftovers as "Girls shouldn't play sports," "Engineering is for boys," or "Women are not natural leaders." Such stereotypes restrict women's choices and deny the society their potential.
Indian women, from the boardroom to Bollywood, from villages in rural India to urban landscapes, break their myriad stereotypes in every possible dimension.
Leadership: Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw of biotech, Indira Nooyi of global business, and political leaders like Mamata Banerjee and Sushma Swaraj prove that leadership has no gender discrimination.
Sports: Women icons like Mary Kom and PV Sindhu have broken the notion that sport is a manly domain and inspired millions of young girls to think big.
Science and Technology: Women scientists like Tessy Thomas, popularly known as the "Missile Woman of India," have opened up avenues for a number of others in areas that otherwise were a man's preserve.
Change: Even rural women are bringing about change. Whether leading panchayats as sarpanchs or running self-help groups as entrepreneurs, they are breaking conventions and changing their worlds.
Role of Education: Education is a very effective tool to break all stereotypes. The "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" campaign, which gives importance to girls' education and attacks the biases of society against them, focuses on creating level playing fields for both genders.
Public awareness and media participation in such issues also are substantial for changing societal perception. Films like Dangal and Chak De! India bring out the power of the female fraternity as they have equal opportunities, bringing about a shift in the public opinion.
Such transition towards a more gender equal society involves not just women going out of their stereotypical roles but the whole of society understanding and breaking the shackles. The more women challenge and redefine their roles, the more they empower themselves and lay down a firm ground for a new, more inclusive, and progressive India.

'Leave Parents Alone': Trinamool On 'Money Offer' To Kolkata Doctor Family
Amid the massive row over the serious allegations by the parents of the Kolkata doctor, who was raped and murdered at a state-run hospital, the Trinamool Congress today blamed "vulture politics" by the Opposition and doubled down on the charge that fake narratives are being created.
Tumblr media
"A video has gone viral and it suggests that the parents were offered money by the police to hush up the case. In another video, the parents have said this allegation is false. They said they only want justice for their daughter. They are heart-broken. There should have been no politics here. Political parties should not bother them," state minister Shashi Panja told the media.
A massive row has erupted after the 31-year-old doctor's parents told the media yesterday that the police offered them money when their daughter's body was still at their home. It is not clear if this money was offered as a compensation.
Soon after, Trinamool supporters started sharing another video, in which the parents are asked if they were offered money in an attempt to hush up the case. "Nothing like this happened, we just want justice," they are heard saying.
The Trinamool today played the second video at their press meet and said the CBI's silence on the progress of its investigation has created a vacuum in which fake news and narratives are being manufactured. "Leading this fake news creation is BJP and its IT cell," she said. "We have earlier seen much talk about the post-mortem report too… sensational claims like 150 gm semen, this is injustice towards the victim."
"Twenty-three days have passed after the transfer of the case from Kolkata Police to CBI. There is no progress report from CBI. We demand that the CBI provide a detailed progress report of their investigation. When Kolkata police was investigating this, regular updates were given out through press conferences," state minister Bratya Basu said.
The ruling party, which is under fire over the shocking incident, questioned if the CBI has nothing in the rape-murder case apart from what Kolkata Police handed over. It also suggested that the focus of the central agency's investigation appears to have shifted from the rape-murder to financial irregularities, in which connection Dr Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was arrested.
"The BJP has alleged that evidence was wiped off, why is CBI not coming out then and saying this?" Mr Basu asked.
The Trinamool leaders did not comment on the other allegations levelled by the victim's father.
The doctor's family has alleged that they wanted the body preserved, but police created so much pressure that they were forced to go ahead with the cremation.
"We wanted the body preserved, but so much pressure was created. About 300-400 cops surrounded us. We returned home and found some 300 cops were standing outside. They created such a situation that we were forced to cremate her," he alleged. He also said the cremation was rushed and the cost was not taken from the family. "My daughter went knowing that Bapi (father) could not even pay for this," the victim's father said. He also alleged that some police officers tried to get his signature on a blank sheet of paper. "I tore it up and threw it away."
BJP leaders have targeted the Trinamool over the father's allegations and said the police's role in the case has been exposed.
BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul said the parents' interaction with the media last night has "exposed the role of Kolkata Police". "And YOU Mamata Banerjee tried to suppress this case and protect the conspirators and deviate the direction of this case. You will be forced to answer the people of Bengal," she said in a post on X.

Mamata Banerjee Pushed From The Back? Doctor Explains What He Really Meant
Tumblr media
A day after suggesting that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee suffered a fall at her Kalighat residence due to a push from behind, SSKM Hospital director Manimoy Bandyopadhyay clarified today. He stated that he merely meant Banerjee may have felt a sensation of push, retracting the previous statement regarding the cause of her injuries to her forehead and nose.
Mamata Banerjee, aged 69, sustained significant injuries to her forehead and nose following a fall within her Kalighat residence in South Kolkata on Thursday evening. Dr. Bandyopadhyay clarified, stating, “There was a sensation of pushing from behind which resulted in Ms. Banerjee’s fall. Our responsibility is to provide treatment, and we have fulfilled that. There was a misunderstanding regarding my previous statement.”
On Thursday evening, the director of SSKM Hospital stated that Mamata Banerjee experienced a fall near her home, attributing it to a push from behind. This assertion led to widespread confusion and speculation regarding the cause of the incident involving the Trinamool Congress leader.
Following the fall, Banerjee received medical attention and underwent necessary procedures at the hospital, including receiving three stitches on her forehead and one on her nose. She also underwent medical tests, including brain imaging and an ECG, before being discharged.
Doctors have advised Mamata Banerjee to rest and have reported her condition as clinically stable as of this morning. Further routine checks are planned throughout the day to monitor her recovery progress. This update comes amidst ongoing concerns and interest in the health status of the prominent political figure.
An official informed the news agency PTI on Friday that the Chief Minister’s health remains stable, with senior doctors closely monitoring her overnight. Another assessment of her condition is scheduled. Regarding speculations surrounding the cause of her fall, a police officer told Press Trust of India that no complaints have been filed. However, security around the CM’s residence has been heightened as a precautionary measure. Mamata Banerjee receives “Z category” security cover, with a dedicated team of officers overseeing her safety, even at her residence. Pictures showing Banerjee with bleeding from her forehead were shared by the TMC on Thursday evening, further fueling public interest and concern about her well-being.
Abhishek, Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and national general secretary of the party, transported her to the hospital in his vehicle and facilitated her admission. This action underscores the familial and political ties within the Trinamool Congress, as family members step in to support their leader during times of need.

[ad_1] Paromita Das GG News Bureau New Delhi, 23rd November. The recent debate between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla and journalist Rajdeep Sardesai on India Today has reignited conversations about the ongoing allegations against Bharatiya business tycoon Gautam Adani. At the core of the discussion lies the accusation of political double standards, particularly from opposition parties such as the Congress, All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), and others, who have weaponized the Adani controversy against the ruling BJP while maintaining historical ties with the industrialist themselves. This debate isn’t just a clash of perspectives but a mirror reflecting a deeply ingrained culture of political opportunism and selective outrage in Bharatiya politics. Political Hypocrisy: A Tale of Two Standards Poonawalla’s argument laid bare the glaring contradictions in the opposition’s stance on Adani. He pointed out that key projects and ventures awarded to the Adani Group, which are now a subject of scrutiny, were initiated during the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) regime. These include landmark projects such as the Mundra Port acquisition, the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) contracts, and Adani’s expansion in the power sector. Critically, Poonawalla questioned the logic behind branding Adani as corrupt while simultaneously collaborating with him during the UPA era. If Adani is guilty of corruption, why did Congress and allied states approve his ventures? Similarly, if his practices warrant allegations of crony capitalism, why has the TMC, under Mamata Banerjee, awarded him the Tajpur Port project in West Bengal? Taking Rahul Gandhi, Rajdeep, Supriya Shrinate and TMC to the cleaners on Adani issue pic.twitter.com/h7xcUBtp7X — Shehzad Jai Hind (Modi Ka Parivar) (@Shehzad_Ind) November 21, 2024   The Selective Outrage Phenomenon Poonawalla’s emphasis on selective outrage resonates with a larger pattern in Bharatiya politics. Opposition parties frequently accuse the ruling BJP of being in cahoots with big industrialists, projecting themselves as defenders of public interest. However, historical records and ongoing associations show a pattern of similar dealings when these parties are in power. Rahul Gandhi’s sharp criticism of Adani, including demands for his arrest and allegations of Modi’s complicity, underscores this selective approach. Poonawalla’s rebuttal—highlighting Gandhi’s silence over Sharad Pawar’s connections with Adani or the absence of a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) demand by the TMC—challenges the credibility of such accusations. The Adani Allegations: A Complex Legal and Political Battlefield The allegations against the Adani Group stem from serious charges, including bribery and collusion in securing state energy contracts. These charges, linked to investigations by U.S. prosecutors, have amplified the political storm. While opposition leaders, including Gandhi, have seized the opportunity to demand action against Adani, the accusations have been labeled as “baseless” by the Adani Group. Critics argue that the opposition’s narrative conveniently overlooks the systemic flaws in Bharat’s corporate-political nexus, focusing instead on targeting BJP to gain political mileage. Economic Growth Versus Accountability: A Balancing Act Adani’s meteoric rise has often been attributed to his proximity to political power. However, such growth isn’t unique to his conglomerate. Business empires across the globe frequently benefit from favorable government policies and alliances. The debate should thus focus on ensuring transparency and accountability, rather than indulging in politically motivated mudslinging. Both the ruling BJP and opposition parties must address systemic loopholes that allow such allegations to arise. Strengthening regulatory bodies like SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) and ensuring stringent oversight can mitigate these issues. Media’s Role: Facilitator or Instigator?
The debate also sheds light on the media’s role in amplifying controversies. While journalists like Sardesai aim to hold individuals accountable, the framing of questions and selective interrogation often influence public perception. Poonawalla’s critique of Sardesai’s questioning of Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate revealed the perceived biases in media discourse. A Need for Honest Political Dialogue To move beyond blame games, Bharatiya politics needs a paradigm shift toward honest dialogue and structural reforms. Opposition parties must introspect on their past actions and avoid hypocrisy. Simultaneously, the BJP must ensure that corporate partnerships are transparent and in the public interest. Bridging the Trust Deficit The Adani controversy underscores a deeper trust deficit in Bharat’s political landscape. For ordinary citizens, the narrative boils down to a simple question: Are political parties prioritizing public welfare or engaging in opportunistic battles? Poonawalla’s arguments, while politically charged, highlight valid concerns about selective outrage and hypocrisy. On the other hand, the opposition’s demands for accountability are equally essential in a democracy. Bridging this divide requires moving beyond partisan politics to focus on systemic reforms. Conclusion: Lessons for Bharatiya Democracy The controversy surrounding Gautam Adani is not merely a business scandal; it’s a reflection of the intertwined nature of politics and commerce in Bharat. While accusations fly and counterarguments dominate prime-time debates, the real challenge lies in ensuring that political and corporate integrity go hand in hand. Bharatiya democracy stands at a crossroads, and addressing these issues with transparency, accountability, and consistency can pave the way for a more equitable and robust system. Until then, the cycle of hypocrisy, selective outrage, and opportunism will likely continue to dominate headlines.   The post Political Hypocrisy at Its Peak’: Shehzad Poonawalla Critiques Opposition Over Adani Scandal appeared first on Global Governance News- Asia's First Bilingual News portal for Global News and Updates. Supreme Court Notice To Bengal, Tamil Nadu Over 'The Kerala Story'
West Bengal was the first state to ban 'The Kerala Story', saying is it "likely to cause a breach of peace".
Tumblr media
New Delhi: The Supreme Court today sought to know the rationale behind ‘The Kerala Story’ movie being banned in West Bengal when it is running across the country without any problem.
“Why should West Bengal ban the movie? It is running in the rest of the country including in states having similar demographic composition and nothing has happened. This has nothing to do with the artistic value of the film,” observed a bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha, and issued notices to West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
Though the movie has not been banned in Tamil Nadu, theatre owners have decided not to screen it over law and order concerns, a move that the makers claimed was a “de facto ban”.
Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for the West Bengal government, cited intelligence inputs to claim there may be a law and order problem.
The court also sought to know about the security provided to theatres screening the movie in Tamil Nadu. It told the state’s counsel that the government cannot look the other way when theatres are attacked.
The matter has been posted to next Wednesday.
The Sudipto Sen directorial sparked controversy with its claim that 32,000 women in Kerala were forced to convert to Islam and they joined ISIS, which the Opposition alleged was a false claim.
West Bengal was the first state to ban ‘The Kerala Story’. In a notification on Monday, the government said it has prohibited the movie’s screening to avoid “any incident of hatred or violence to maintain law and order in the state.”
The makers of the movie had challenged the Bengal ban in the Supreme Court, citing they were losing money every day.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said the movie was aimed at defaming the state of Kerala and condemning its people. She also targeted the BJP for “creating communal politics”.
‘The Kerala Story’, produced by Vipul Shah, depicts how a group of women were allegedly forced to convert to Islam and recruited by the ISIS terror group.
The movie stirred a political storm with the Opposition parties alleging that 32,000 women joining ISIS is an exaggerated figure.
While the movie faced obstacles in Opposition-ruled states, it received tax reliefs in BJP-ruled states like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Opposition united in 'black protest', meet at Congress Chief Kharge's house to take on BJP
Leaders of 18 Opposition parties including the TMC, AAP and BRS camped at the Congress president's residence last night and vowed to fight against BJP together.

NEW DELHI: As a united Opposition intensified its protests on Monday, Parliament saw another day of chaos and adjournment on the third week of the Budget session.
Wearing black clothes, at least 18 Opposition parties including TMC marched from Parliament to Vijay Chowk to mark their protest against the disqualification of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from Parliament and reiterate their demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to probe the allegations surrounding the Adani Group.
In the evening, 18 parties attended a dinner meeting called by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to discuss future strategies to counter the government on the Adani issue and to sustain the momentum of Opposition Unity. Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi and former party chief Rahul Gandhi were also present at the meeting.
Among the parties that were represented at the meeting were the DMK, NCP, JD(U), BRS, CPI(M), CPI, AAP, MDMK, KC, TMC, RSP, RJD, NC, IUML, VCK, SP, and JMM.
Curiously, while the TMC joined the Opposition meetings and protests, Shiv Sena (UBT) skipped protests and the dinner meeting. Shiv Sena (UBT) faction leaders said that they are skipping the meeting as they are miffed over Rahul Gandhi's remark on Savarkar.
On Saturday, the Congress leader said that "My name is not Savarkar to apologise," Taking exception to Rahul’s comment, former Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray had warned Gandhi that the party "will not tolerate" insult of Savarkar.
While the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from Lok Sabha membership has realigned the Opposition, the biggest takeaway is the TMC, which has stayed away from joint Opposition meetings and protests in Parliament till now.
TMC Chief and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has come out in support of Rahul Gandhi and said that in PM Modi’s new India, opposition parties have become the prime target. “We have witnessed a new low for our constitutional democracy,” she said responding to Gandhi’s conviction and subsequent disqualification.
Though the ‘black’ protest was called by the Congress party, several Opposition leaders including AAP, DMK, CPI (M) were seen wearing black in solidarity. Holding a huge ‘Satyamev Jayate’ banner and placards with ‘Save democracy’, the opposition members staged a sit-in protest along with Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, who were in black attire. Addressing the media at a joint press conference,
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said, “We want a JPC on the Adani issue. 18 parties have come together today. Why is the government scared of a probe? It means something is amiss.” The Congress chief said that Opposition MPs were dressed in black as ‘democracy is in danger’ and BJP had been destroying institutions, toppling elected governments, besides intimidating the opposition using central agencies.
Following the dinner meeting, Kharge wrote on Twitter, "To save one man, Modiji is trampling the interests of 140 Cr people. To protect PM's 'Param Mitr', BJP stalls Parliament that discusses people's issues. If NO wrong is committed, why is govt shying away from opposition's demand for a probe by Joint Parliamentary Committee?"
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the leaders resolved to fight against the BJP unitedly.
"Tonight floor leaders of 18 Opposition parties met at the residence of @kharge ji and with one voice decided to continue with their campaign against the Modi regime that is destroying democracy and that has subverted all institutions," Ramesh wrote on Twitter.
"They expressed their collective resolve to combat Modi's politics of fear and intimidation. This resolve will be reflected in joint actions outside Parliament beginning now," he added.
