MamaConfessions: I don’t feel 32

I know, I know. Technically, I’m not 32 yet. The other day I was driving and as I was thinking about what I wanted for my birthday, I tried to remember...was I 32 ...or 33? And then panic set in. 

The reality is that by the time I was 17 I had lived through a lot more than many 32 year olds, so I think it’s fair to say I feel like I’ve been alive forever. I could sit here and talk about how I feel like by this time I should be further ahead, question my existence and think about what I have contributed to this world, and whether or not I’ve given enough, but I’m going to skip that rant (for now).

Birthdays mean so much more now. They’re the opportunity to celebrate the privilege to be a mom, a sister, a daughter, wife and friend.  Birthdays are a continuous reminder that I have been given more time to improve myself. They’re a reminder that 15 year-old pregnant, depressed, and lonely me is further away. It doesn’t make that image any less painful, but it makes me feel so thankful that the dark road happened that much longer and that every year I’m inching closer to experiencing more happy years than not-so-happy ones. 

For my birthday this year all I want is to be around the people that care for me as much as I care for them. When my mom asked me what I wanted, I asked for a donation to my job. What really matters to me now is the ability to be able to give to others. I’ve experienced hunger, the eternal feeling of wanting and deprivation, and I’m in a place where I can give back now and y’all, it’s the best feeling in the world.

Thanks to my recent binging of Parks & Rec I decided I needed a “Treat Yo Self” day and for the first time in my adult life I’m taking one. I’m also going off Keto for a week, so please check in on me because I am sure I’ll be bound to be sick. Oh well. 

As I get to celebrate another year, I want to say thank you for your support, love, and being part of my village. Here’s to thirty-two.
