I mind me of the hawthorn trees, With cuckoos flying near; The hawthorn blossoms smelt so sweet, The cuckoo called so clear!
The hill was steep enough to climb, It seemed to touch the sky! You saw two valleys from the top, The Severn and the Wye.
The Severn and the Wye you saw, And they were always green; I think it was the prettiest sight That I have ever seen.
And there, so far above the town, With not a soul to see, Whenever she could slip away My love would come to me!
I never smell the hawthorn bloom, Or hear the cuckoo sing, But I am minded of my love, And Malvern Hills in Spring!

Take a Look at Burkholder’s New Landscaping Projects
Each year our designers help Main Line homeowners upgrade their landscapes with new landscaping projects. Sometimes the upgrade is as simple as adding a new custom stone walkway or a specially designed deck. Other projects are more elaborate, incorporating water features like pools and spas, outdoor kitchens, firepit entertaining areas, and softscaping. Below are a some of the landscape design projects we have completed.
Pool and Patio Retreat
We collaborated with Ted’s Pools on this gorgeous backyard. This project included retaining walls, seat walls and steps using Techo-Bloc 6” Mini Creta Architectural caps in beautiful chestnut brown. The patio and walkway were built using Techo-Bloc Blu 60 pavers in Champlain Grey.
The natural stone steps in the spa area are West Mountain Steps and the boulders surrounding the space are a brown granite.
Additionally, our team created this amazing outdoor space by adding plantings that would highlight the area with blooms from Spring throughout Fall, with an emphasis on summer, while the pool is in use.
Backyard Oasis
Check out this beautiful backyard oasis! Our team created this gorgeous new outdoor living space using Blu Grande Techo-Bloc pavers for the patio and walkways. We built a composite wood grilling island and a raised spa with a waterfall spillway. Now the client has a staycation location right in their backyard!
Techo-Bloc Patio
This cozy backyard living space is fall-ready!
Our team completed this Techo-Bloc Blu60 Patio with a gorgeous Valencia Firepit and Techo-Bloc Mini Creta Architectural retaining walls. Plantings and outdoor residential lighting were added as well to make the space complete.
Malvern Backyard Project
A client in Malvern, Pa was outgrowing their existing deck, patio, and outdoor kitchen in the summer of 2022. Our design team came up with a plan to fit their needs. This was a great project to build and the transformation is pretty incredible. Now the family and their friends have amazing outdoor spaces to enjoy year round!
Private Oasis
In summer of 2022, a client wanted to add outdoor living spaces to their landscape. Our plan included a new deck and patio, pavilion with seating and a television, a pool with a rock waterfall. Now the clients have their own backyard oasis.
Outdoor Upgrade
Here are some before pictures of a project we finished in June of 2022. We used a mixture of natural stone and Techo-bloc products to create a level area for an inviting bluestone walkway with ample space for colorful plantings and landscape lighting.
Backyard Pool Project
We completed this particular project in May 2020. We used flagstone pavers as the primary material for the pool deck and surround, which are durable, slip-resistant, and complement the pool’s design nicely. A few lights around the pool and the chairs help provide a lovely ambiance at night. The pool area has a significant amount of softscaping, and the plants are coming in and blooming wonderfully. Our crews did a fantastic job, from the design process to the final stages of building, and the client is ecstatic.
A Backyard Transformation
Our new landscaping projects vary in scope and complexity, and this particular project was a full backyard transformation. We had a thorough design consultation and process to fully understand what our clients wanted their dream backyard to become for starters. Next, we designed the pool, the spa with waterfall and natural stone veneer, and the pavilion, which is excellent for outdoor entertaining.
The entertainment area features a stone fireplace, plenty of seating, a built-in television and a natural stone countertop for meals and drinks. Backyard transformations take time to plan and build, but the result is a beautiful, ideal landscape.
Small, Yet Detailed Patio
In contrast to the complete backyard transformation, we have smaller scale projects such as new patios. Our hardscape crew used flagstone pavers, and the warm, earthy tones give the patio an organic, natural appearance.
The different sizes, shapes, and intricate patterns of the pavers also provide the patio with a unique aesthetic, enhancing visual interest and complexity. And the wall nearby has a couple of undercap lights, which makes the outdoor space more usable and inviting during the night. We are proud of the work one of our hardscaping crews did with this project, and this patio is an excellent example of what you can have on your property.
Regrade for New Retaining Wall and Patio
These homeowners wanted to expand their outdoor living space, but the slope was a little too steep. So we cut down the existing grade and installed a Techo Bloc Semma retaining wall and Techo Bloc Blu 60 pavers.

Dreams and Phone Calls
Buy me a coffee?
A/N: it’s been a hot minute since Onerous Cimmerian, huh? I’m sorry!
Word count: 634 words
Spring bloomed in the front garden of the family home with brightly coloured flowers and the chirping of baby birds.
Henrik stood in the garden, gloves on and cap askew. He planted another bulb into the ground, covering it with dirt and fertiliser. Straightening up, he wiped his brow, looking at the area.
“Morning, Hen!” He looked up to see Malvern sitting on the windowsill, smiling down at him.
“Good morning, Malvern. Did you sleep well?” The hero jumped down to stand opposite him, hands on his hips.
“Like a log. Jux did call once because he had a nightmare, but after that I slept relatively well.”
Henrik nodded, taking his gloves off and dropping them into his basket.
“When did you wake up? There’s a lot of bulbs in the garden.” The vlogger sighed, looking at the time on his phone.
“Maybe five hours ago? I could not sleep. Something was making me worried.” Malvern frowned, looking at his cousin with concern.
“Jared has some nice salve to help people sleep. He gave me some a few years back when I had nightmares. Maybe you could ask him for some help?”
Henrik considered the suggestion before bending to pick up his basket.
“I’ll think about it. Would you like some breakfast?”
----
Considering he had woken several times due to nightmares over the night, Juxta still woke up at his usual time. He stretched, gently pushing one of his lions off his legs, then rubbed his face.
He was still not used to a clean shaven face. He smiled fondly at his lions then swung his legs off the bed. With a yawn, he transported himself into the kitchen.
----
Jared was sitting in the kitchen, nursing a mug of coffee and glaring at a spot on the table. He hated mornings. Especially Monday mornings.
He had been getting bad dreams about the family falling apart. The dreams had kept him awake at night, wrapped in a cold sweat as fear coursed through his body. It was odd; seeing dreams where family members went away from home as though it was a flashback, but then seeing Jux with his weird power things.
“It doesn’t make any sense…”
What doesn’t make any sense? Juxta’s smoky writing pulled Jared from his thoughts, causing the healer to look up.
“I’ve been having these weird dreams. Dreams of the family moving apart. I thought they were flashbacks – memories at first, but then they were set in the present. I haven’t had dreams like that in ages.” Jared took a sip of coffee, looking away as the door opened.
“Morning, boys. I am going to make pancakes, do you want some?” The two nodded, watching as Henrik walked into the kitchen, whistling.
Maybe the dreams are trying to tell you something. I get dreams sometimes that sort of foretell how Mayhem will go that year. Maybe they’re foreshadowing something –
The sound of the ringing phone made Juxta stop, the words fading mid-sentence. Jared looked at the phone, waiting for someone to pick it up. Chase did, moving from his clinic to the phone while rubbing his eyes.
“Hello? Yes, this is he. Yes? No, I didn’t know that. Yes, I can do that. Yes, I’ll head over there today. Thank you for calling me. Bye.”
“Chase? Is everything ok?” Jared looked at his brother’s face with concern, hands bracing on the table to get up. The doctor ran a hand through his hair, chuckling to himself before looking up.
“Yeah, everything’s fine. That was just a call from the landlord of Stacy’s house. Apparently she left suddenly and wants me to go through her stuff.” He looked at his shaking hands, patting his clothes down before heading for the stairs.
“I’m going to get changed. I’ll head out right away.”

Week-End Update: Malvern Merriment
We had a pretty busy week-end in Malvern and, despite the cold & the rain, it was a magnificent one overall. Our Raffles For Ruffs Fundraiser at Twenty9 Restaurant & Bar was a huge success! It really was a fun night, the food was great, the prizes were awesome (Chuck, we really do expect a picture of you in those Chihuahua leggings!) and the pics from the photobooth – well, some of them were questionable and very funny. We didn’t have any time to recover to post pics, etc. from the night yet because it was off to Malvern Blooms this morning. It says a lot about what a great community event Malvern Blooms is when there’s still a huge crowd on such a cold & rainy day. Thanks for everyone who stopped by to spend some time with the pups & chat with us, and came out to support the local community.
It was also a great week adoptions too. Legend’s new family met him at the Yellow Springs Art Show last Sunday and it was a love connection. They couldn’t have been more excited and ready to take the plunge when we approved their application, so we know it will be a happily ever after. Legend’s brother Icon, now Fenway, also made a love match to celebrate gotcha day this week. A few more of Guess’s pups were adopted: Prada, Versace & Kors – who was adopted along with McCall! Rocket, now Greyson, Robert and Kasie were also adopted this week.

“I know I haven’t checked in for a while but here’s a recent picture of Cali! We love her so much and she is extremely spoiled, she already turns 1 year next Saturday! Hope all is well”
Axle FKA Adam
Axle FKA Adam
“A year ago today we adopted this cutie! He is the sweetest, goofy-est, scaredy cat dog you’ll ever meet and I love him A year ago today he was afraid to enter houses, afraid of most people, and couldn’t walk on a leash. He’s come so far in a year! Can’t wait for many more years to come with Mr. Axle.”
Jackson FKA Fargo
“Time has flown! Jackson is doing awesome and I love him more than ever! He is the friendliest, loving puppy to humans and other dogs. He frequents doggy daycare once a week to play with his friends and we take many walks throughout the week to explore the city. “
Zena
#gallery-4 margin: auto; #gallery-4 .gallery-item float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; #gallery-4 img border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; #gallery-4 .gallery-caption margin-left: 0; /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
“Zena is doing amazing. We are so happy with her. Below are pictures of the pupperz going to the beach. “
Ranger FKA Duke (aka Clooney)
#gallery-5 margin: auto; #gallery-5 .gallery-item float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; #gallery-5 img border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; #gallery-5 .gallery-caption margin-left: 0; /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
“The communication with you guys is excellent and has become an almost regularity around here. Ranger is doing great! He’s settling in more and more everyday, relaxing more, and becoming a better dog all the time. I think he’s finally starting to realize this is his permanent home. We’re consulting with an in-house trainer on a few things to help strengthen our relationship. It’s great having him around.”
Prue
#gallery-6 margin: auto; #gallery-6 .gallery-item float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 25%; #gallery-6 img border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; #gallery-6 .gallery-caption margin-left: 0; /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
“Prue is settling in well. She’s gone for several walks, loves her backyard and porch, and is getting to know all of the neighbors by barking loudly at them. She also lets us know whenever a UPS truck drives by. She is the sweetest girl and we love her to the moon and back.”
Triton
#gallery-7 margin: auto; #gallery-7 .gallery-item float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; #gallery-7 img border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; #gallery-7 .gallery-caption margin-left: 0; /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
“Triton is doing great. He is everything I could have hoped for. He is full of energy and drive and could not be better looking. He is coming along well on learning to obey. That being said he is a total German Shepherd with emphasis on the German. Since this is not my first GSD his stubborn trait is no surprise. I have had to walk away from the situation a few times when it is so obvious he knows what I want him to do but refuses to comply. We will get to the goal as he is too wonderfully smart to give up on.
In fact I had planned this first week to be bonding not training. The bonding has gone great so we sill have a few days before we start “training.” Just yesterday he has started eating well. Chasing balls is a challenge so I am working on runs and walks for exercise. Last Thursday night we has an intense thunderstorm and he had a meltdown. Once he calmed down I let him sleep on a rug beside my bed which he has done every night since, and will continue to do so. When we go outside he never lets me out of his sight.
Riley came over Monday night and is here again tonight. They are pretty good buds and Riley is a pretty patient dog handler. Everyone here loves him. I posted several photos on Facebook last night and he now has fans in three continents.
All in all it is hard to believe he has only been here one week, it feels like he has been a part of the family a long time. He is getting along with the three other dogs here on the property and my daughter’s pit mix. Twice he has shown a bit of what I think may have been jealousy when I petted the other dogs. My Bad. I need to keep that rolled up newspaper to smack myself on the head when I forget what to do and what not to do.
He is a great dog. Thanks for getting him for us.”
Nala FKA Velma
Nala FKA Velma
“Nala’s (Velma, adopted 12/23/16) first visit to the local dog park. Taken off her leash after this pic. Big day because she was a “No other dogs” label, and was perfectly fine as she ran and played with her five new friends! She’s come a long way and is a sweetheart!”
Timber FKA Clover (Louise’s pup)
#gallery-8 margin: auto; #gallery-8 .gallery-item float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; #gallery-8 img border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; #gallery-8 .gallery-caption margin-left: 0; /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
“We are definitely enjoying every day with Timber (formerly Clover). He loves running around outside playing ball, just as long as his sidekick, our 6 year old son, is playing with him. Otherwise he sits and waits for him at the patio door. We had Timber at the vet for his check up Monday where he weighed in at 102.5 lbs. He’s our big mush ball and we wouldn’t change him for the world! “
Kai FKA Daisy (Louise’s pup)
Kai FKA Daisy
“She really is… such a great dog and friend. Thank you for allowing us to adopt her… Kai is smart dog. I trained her in two days on electric fence long ago, she runs all over the yard, loves to chase birds and play with my Norwich Terrier, Chase. I recently bought her a Whistle 3 GPS tracker for fun, and it tracks her activity and level of intensity.. Its like a fitbit for dogs in some ways but keeps track of her anywhere she is located. No chance she would leave the yard but I wanted it anyway.
I hope all her siblings are enjoying life and Mom Louise is doing great too.”
Sampson FKA Sebastian (Thelma’s pup; also Louise’s granddog)
#gallery-9 margin: auto; #gallery-9 .gallery-item float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; #gallery-9 img border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; #gallery-9 .gallery-caption margin-left: 0; /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
“Enclosed are a couple of pics of Sampson (you guys called him Sebastian) he is so wonderful !!! I was wondering, when we chose him he had a brother. I was wondering if we can get in touch with his owners and possibly exchange photos, I am so curious to see what he looks like :)”
Leo FKA DaVinci (Thelma’s pup; also Louise’s granddog)

Summer in Lynn’s Garden - FineGardening
Summer in Lynn’s Garden – FineGardening
2022-09-01 00:00:39 We’re in Malvern, Pennsylvania, today visiting Lynn Crawford’s garden. We’ve been to Lynn’s garden before (Peonies and Other Favorites; Flowering Tonight Only!), and today we’re looking at some summer blooms. What is late summer without dahlias? In Zones 8 or warmer they can be left in the ground over winter. In colder climates they are easy to dig and store over winter in a…

Below are a few of the landscape design projects we have completed recently.
New Backyard Oasis
So we cut down the existing grade and installed a Techo Bloc Semma retaining wall and Techo Bloc Blu 60 pavers.

i am the question to all answers
6 years old.
He looks up through the small window on the airplane to see the moon wavering above the clouds far below him. It isn't his first time being higher than the sky, and it won't be his last.
"You should get some sleep," his mother tells him.
He just shakes his head and looks back down at the book in his lap. He doesn't sleep well and he's not tired.
8 years old.
"This will be the last time we move," his mother promises, at the begging of his older sister. She can't seem to take anymore of being the new girl in class and having to make friends all over again is just too much pressure for her. This is the 4th promise his mother makes about it.
Tablo--renamed "Daniel" because they live in Canada now-- doesn't suffer from his sister's peril. He makes friends with stray cats and pet rocks, reads way too much for a child, and insists he's too damn busy with his violin to go outside.
His sister thinks he's a freak.
Late at night while she sleeps, he hides every ounce of makeup she owns.
13 years old.
He runs away from home for the fifth time and hitches up his backpack higher on his shoulder, trying hard to convince himself that, no, it isn't too heavy.
He bites his lip against the cold seeping into his bones and his soul, and when the police car pulls up next to him, he wants to cry.
14 years old.
"What are you gonna fucking do about it, bitch?"
Malvern College Boarding School in Worcestershire, England, is a strange place. Castle-like buildings with clean walls and stone-cut edges, the staff smiles all sharp enough to slice through the students who come here. It's a white, pristine sort of hell, strict and demanding as though there is some higher grade above A+ that they are all somehow supposed to reach.
It makes the student body anxious and angsty, the rigorous sports activities just not being enough to work out the demons in their heads, and true to form, Daniel (who still signs all his poetry with "Tablo") fights with the other boys a lot.
When one of the many scuffles get out of hand, they get caught by the teachers and somebody has to physically drag him off the other boy, his eyes burning and his fists bloody.
He gets expelled from the boarding school and his father has never been angrier.
16 years old.
Scratch that. The only thing that makes the man angrier is when Daniel stands up in the middle of his orchestra concert, bringing a halt to Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, all eyes in the massive room widening as everyone sucks in a shocked breath. He raises his violin and starts playing the theme song of Jurassic Park, one of his favorite movies.
Question: are all music teachers so humorless?
18 years old.
"They want me to be a doctor... can you believe that shit?" he asks, inhaling the cigarette as he sits next to his best friend on graduation day.
"Hey Danny, promise me something okay?" the boy's eyes are brighter blue than the sky. "Promise me you'll go out and make something of yourself okay? Go be Somebody, yeah?"
"Yeah," he passes his friend the cigarette. "Only if you promise me something.. just that if we're thirty and not married yet, we'll get married to each other."
His friend shoves him so hard he almost falls off the bench, both of them laughing at the weird seriousness in the atmosphere. It doesn't fit either of them.
Four months later, they find out the sky-eyed boy has Leukemia. He dies before the year ends and neither of their promises come true.
22 years old.
He graduates UC Berkeley with degrees in English and Music Composition, ignoring the medical degree his parents had wanted for him.
He moves back to Seoul, South Korea.
23 years old.
It takes less than three hours, two cups of coffee, and one day for him to realize that he will some day marry this woman named Kang Hyejung. She has a no-nonsense quirk in her smile and a lightness in her walk and she looks devastatingly perfect in yellow. She might be walking sunshine and he might have actually found the cure to his depression.
It takes two years of being in love with her to convince her of the same thing.
25 years old.
He finally does it. He finally becomes Somebody Important.
A daddy.
Husband, teacher, poet, father.
27 years old.
He's standing in the store aisle, holding two different types of diapers in his hands, his brow furrowed and stressed, his hair a mess, a screaming, crying little girl a few feet away from him (who has collapsed onto the floor in fit about not getting the toy she wants). He hasn't heard himself think clearly in days, can't even remember the last coherent thought that ran through his head that didn't have to do with the memory of Hyejung's body, broken and bloody on the side of the road.
He's having a mental breakdown in the middle of the supermarket, tears actually streaming down his face because, fuck, he has no idea what to buy for his own daughter-- this is something Hyejung usually would have taken care of. Not him. She always does the mommy things, he does the daddy things. Or... did.
29 years old.
He's actually never hated himself more than he does during the brief, almost-catastrophic few weeks when he's secretly sleeping with a student at the academy. It's like a new low point in his decent to hell and every time she looks at him, he just wants to die.
He breaks things off with her and they agree never to talk again.
30 years old.
It's all about a girl. His girl. Haru is getting older, dressing herself now and finally understanding all his dad jokes just enough to roll her eyes at them all. She has Hyejung's sassy personality and a blooming sense a fashion, even for a five year old.
He centers his whole universe around her and his work as the music teacher, still writing closet poetry sometimes and still reading too much for someone his age. He still doesn't sleep well.

18 luxury castle hotels where you can live like royalty
If medieval castles, opulent interiors, and the thought of being surrounded by centuries upon centuries of history set your heart racing, consider staying at a luxury castle hotel in Britain. There are many great ones in locations including the Scottish Highlands, County Limerick in Ireland, and outside London.
The castles have plenty of appeal for nature lovers as well. Well-tended courtyards, lovely gardens, and soaring pergolas are some of what you’ll find as you stroll these vast woodland grounds, not to mention the occasional commanding view of the water or rolling hills. Many of these castles have been restored to their former glory, with the demands of modern-day guests in mind. Though you’ll feel transported to the Middle Ages, you certainly won’t have to live like it. Instead you’ll feel like a member of a royal family, not unlike the ones who’ve called these castles home for the past several centuries.

Lucknam Park
“When you travel down the manicured road in a tunnel of ancient trees, you know you are someplace very special,” said Jonathan Epstein, president of Celebrated Experiences in Atlanta, of this 42-room hotel located in Wiltshire, England, about 30 minutes northeast of Bath. “It’s perfect for larger families, as many of their exquisite suites connect. They also have a world-class spa, equestrian centre and a Michelin-starred restaurant.”

Gravetye Manor
“Located in the Sussex countryside, just south of London, this elegant and traditional 17-room manor is frequented by the world’s most discerning travelers,” said Epstein. Guests love getting lost in the exotic gardens crafted by horticultural writer William Robinson, whose ideas revolutionized modern garden design.

Ballynatray House
Set in 850 acres of verdant countryside in County Cork, Ireland, this 18th-century Georgian mansion feels more contemporary than others on this list, said Andrew Loyd, cofounder of Loyd & Townsend Rose, a villa rental agency in London. There are eight cottages, and guests are encouraged to go outdoors for a day of simulated game shooting, tennis, archery, walking or fishing.

Gordon Castle
Set in the mystical Speyside region in the Highlands of Scotland, Gordon Castle could be the set for a romantic period piece, said Loyd. Once part of the burgh of the Dukes of Gordon, the sporting estate, which dates to the 15th century, has been sumptuously restored, with seven bedrooms and an eight-acre Walled Garden, one of the largest in Britain.

Glenapp Castle
It was here that Winston Churchill plotted the final D-Day landings. And while the family-owned castle in Ayrshire, Scotland, feels more quiet, you’ll still find much of what charmed the great leader: dramatic views overlooking the Irish Sea, Gothic and Renaissance design and 36 acres of castle grounds to wander freely. “With fewer than 20 rooms, we suggest guests book early,” said Epstein.

Ballyfin
This 20-room mansion — named the top resort hotel in the U.K. and Ireland by Travel + Leisure readers in 2017 — seems to win all the awards, according to Epstein. And for good reason: snacks are complimentary, suites are impeccably furnished and the nearby Slieve Bloom Mountains are blissfully tourist-free. Practice your golf swing on the Arnold Palmer-designed Palmer Ryder Cup Course.

Adare Manor
After an extensive restoration that took nearly two years, Adare Manor, in County Limerick, Ireland, has reopened to rave reviews, said Epstein. Not only has the neo-gothic estate expanded to 104 rooms, its decorative stone and wood carvings have been given a touch-up — the better to flaunt its 17th-century antiquities — and its Irishness is on full display. Drop by the Tack Room for near nightly performances of traditional and contemporary Irish music.

Baronial Castle
The only habitable castle on Loch Ness, 20 minutes from Inverness on Scotland’s northeast coast, Baronial features an opulent drawing room and library, snooker, horse riding and golf at Royal Dornoch Golf Club, said Loyd. Don’t miss the Walled Garden at Cawdor Castle, which dates to 1600.

Kinross House
Nestled within the historic county of Kinross in eastern Scotland, this thoughtfully restored 24-room country house feels like a fairytale, said Loyd. Here guests can indulge in a number of country pursuits, be it cycling, archery, falconry or salmon fishing.

Cowdray House
Cowdray House in West Sussex, England, is the ultimate country retreat, with charming cottages, a farm shop, freshly baked produce and a butchery. A full English breakfast at the Farm Shop Café is a must, said Loyd.

Lismore Castle
Once owned by Sir Walter Raleigh, who famously brought potatoes to Ireland, Lismore Castle dates to 1170 but feels decidedly modern. That’s thanks to amenities like Wi-Fi, ensuite bathrooms and a cinema room; the Duke of Devonshire’s family still owns it. Located in County Waterford, Ireland, Lismore’s Castle Gardens and contemporary art gallery are open to the public, said Loyd.

Eastnor Castle
At the foot of the Malvern Hills, near the Cotswolds in England, you’ll find Eastnor Castle, home of the Hervey-Bathurst family and a popular tourist attraction. Medieval armor and fine art adorns the interior; outside, children are encouraged to play in the Knight’s Maze and 5,000 acres of parkland. Available for private events, it has 12 ornate bedrooms and two recently refurbished cottages, said Loyd.

Roch Castle
This Pembrokeshire, Wales, castle may date to 1195, but its six bedrooms feel current, with aromatherapy towelettes, iPod docks and 300-thread-count linens. A Grade 1 ancient monument, Roch was home to conquerors and courtesans and served as a royalist stronghold during the Civil War. Visit its art-filled Oriel lounge with works by Phil Ashcroft.

Ashford Castle
“Once the ancestral home of the Guinness family in County Mayo, Ireland,” said Epstein, Ashford is lucky to have owners who invested significantly in revamping the 83-room hotel. A favorite among royals and celebrities, it has been voted one of the best resort hotels in the U.K. and Ireland by Travel + Leisure readers.

Somerleyton
Somerleyton, in Suffolk, England, is quintessentially British, with a high-class history that dates to 1240. Today guests will find a 70-foot-long pergola, iron-and-glass greenhouses designed by Joseph Paxton, the architect of the Crystal Palace, and Victorian decorative elements. The yew hedge mazes, planted in 1846, are worth a gander, said Loyd.

Broughton Hall Estate
Dating to 1597 and owned by the Tempest Baronet family for 900 years, Broughton Hall Estate looks like the idyllic Cotswolds setting of “The Great British Bake Off.” Guests can stay in one of 15 characterful bedrooms with breathtaking views of the countryside and 17th-century formal gardens, said Loyd.
Source: Travel+Leisure
Farleigh House
This 4,000-acre estate, an hour from London in the Hampshire countryside, has been owned by the same family since the 15th century, said Loyd. Beyond the 11 suites and bedrooms, you’ll find 10 acres of gardens, a serene boating lake, an orchard, a rose garden and a serpentine walk.

Yard Design Tips from a Local Malvern Landscape Design Firm
If you’re planning to improve your backyard, here are yard design tips from a local landscape design firm based in Malvern, Pennsylvania, to help you get started.
#1 Determine your landscape needs and goals.
Designing an outdoor living space requires an enormous amount of time, energy, and money. It’s an excellent investment to improve curb appeal and boost your property’s resale value. However, there’s no one-size-fits-all type of outdoor upgrade. Every landscape design project is customized based on the family’s landscape needs and wants. Constant communication between the homeowner and a Malvern landscape design firm is vital for a thriving backyard oasis.
#2 Determine which landscape feature is your focal point.
Landscape design projects may vary from one home to another. Some projects may have a combination of a deck, pavilion, and pool. In comparison, others are happy only to have a beautiful garden that blooms all year round. A good design always has a focal point wherein a viewer’s eye is attracted. Relate your vision to your landscape designer and let their artistic and architectural expertise translate your dreams into reality.
#3 Aim for a cohesive design
When selecting outdoor living fixtures and furniture, make sure to consider the hues, colors, and tone, and theme of your landscape. Please make sure the colors match based on your design themes to look united and cohesive. As they say, unity is the quality of oneness.
#4 Choose plants based on your climate.
Colors, textures, and good plant and tree placement are crucial. If you want to have a beautiful blooming garden all year round, choose plants that work best based on your locality’s climate. Native plants are highly suggested and an obvious choice, but if you also select non-native ones, plant them according to their soil, sun, and shade requirements.
Upgrading your yard can be overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. We encourage you to hire an experienced Malvern landscape design firm. If you reside in Malvern or within the Main Line area, you may want to consider Burkholder Brothers Landscaping. The firm is a household name in the community and known to have comprehensive experience in the landscape design industry. Visit their website at https://www.burkholderlandscape.com for more information.

Do you think Kara remembers the phantom zone? At least on some level?
She’d fallen asleep in her big sister’s arms, because after everything – after Jeremiah, after Rick Malverne, after the Daxamite invasion, after… everything – they’ve been having a whole lot more Sisters’ Nights.
She’d been afraid, at first.
About Maggie.
Because she told Alex to never let her go, but here she is, taking all of Alex’s time, her emotional energy, her physical touch.
But one night – one night that found pizza boxes and alien rum and whisky tumblers spread across Alex’s living room, both of the sisters tangled in the same blanket on the couch, trying to sleep off the food and the alcohol – she hears the door to Alex’s apartment open.
She’s not quite asleep, but she pretends to be.
Alex is trying to get her to apologize less. A habit that formed and stuck with… him.
And she doesn’t want to feel like she has to apologize to Maggie.
For monopolizing her girlfriend.
So she keeps her eyes closed and she tries to keep her breathing even as she hears Maggie’s footsteps and heartbeat approach.
She feigns sleep as she feels Maggie lift the blanket up to cover Alex’s exposed feet, and she tries not to let tears leak out of her eyes when she hears her kiss Alex’s face and whisper that she loves her so damn much.
But she almost blows her own cover when Maggie shifts to her, too.
There’s a hesitation, like Maggie is deciding whether this intimacy with her girlfriend’s sister is acceptable, would be welcome.
She must determine that it is – that they’ve survived too much together – because she adjusts Kara’s side of the blanket, too, to cover Kara’s exposed shoulder. She smooths – gently, gently, so Kara doesn’t wake – a few strands of hair away from Kara’s face. She kisses Kara’s forehead, soft and tender, right before she whispers, “Love you, Kid Danvers. Rest well.”
Kara’s heart almost bleeds at the sincerity of it, of this woman she’s been jealous of, this woman she’s been warring with and trying so hard not to.
She continues to feign sleep as she hears Maggie pad softly away from the couch; hears her pour two glasses of water and leave them on the table; clear away the empty pizza boxes and liquor bottles; pour some water for herself; and tiptoe up into Alex’s bedroom.
For some reason, it doesn’t make Kara feel like her space – because Alex has always been hers – is being invaded.
Instead, somehow, it feels like her space is being shared. Enhanced.
Like she’s safe.
And she snuggles into that feeling – that feeling of being surrounded by love – and lets herself actually drift into sleep.
And the dream – the memory, really – starts that way.
Safe. Surrounded, in a good way. Snuggled. Protected. Sheltered.
There’s the soft hum of Kryptonian engines – a gentle, barely-there, rhythmic sound that she will never stop missing – and there’s the brilliant glow, visible even behind her closed eyelids, of nothing, of everything.
Of time folding in on itself and holding, holding, holding.
For a moment, it’s comforting.
Like Alex’s arms, strong and steady even in sleep, wrapped around her.
Of Maggie’s tentative kiss to her forehead, to her new little sister’s face.
Of Lena’s lips, earlier today, pressing against her cheek, both hoping the other would turn at exactly the right time, bringing lips to meet lips instead of the more platonic embrace.
Of James’s attentiveness, of Winn’s firm faith, of J’onn’s steady support.
For a moment.
But then it’s her aunt’s body dying in her arms and it’s Rick Malverne trying to kill her sister because of her, of her, of her, and it’s her parents, creating weapons and ending lives and swearing it’s for the greater good.
Of her parents, her friends, her entire world.
Vaporized. Gone.
Endlessly looping, endlessly cycling, endless.
Past, present, and future, meaningless, melded, because it all loops here.
Loops, endlessly.
For years and seconds and centuries.
Loops, endlessly, even as she sleeps.
Especially as she sleeps.
Because her body won’t age, but her mind is awake, somewhere, in there.
In the Phantom Zone.
She never remembers while she’s awake, now.
She never feels the lingering sense of endlessness, the heady sense of all-knowingness, the hopelessness of eternity, while she’s awake, now.
But when she sleeps?
Sometimes, when she sleeps, it comes back to her.
Her planet, gone.
Her, alone.
Surviving. Alone.
Prevented even from getting to Kal, useless even in the one reason she survived. The one reason she might have been able to scrape together some measly excuse, some desperate justification, for living when everyone else was dead.
Gone.
Because she’s trapped.
The one use she could have had. Useless.
And she has seconds, years, centuries, it feels like, to contemplate it, even as she sleeps, even as she doesn’t age.
Even as time is collapsed.
She only remembers, now, when she sleeps.
Sometimes.
And every time, she weeps.
And it’s her weeping that wakes her.
Because she’s not alone in her pod anymore.
She might feel like she’s there, but she’s not, she’s not, and she never will be again.
Because her shuddering wakes her sister, and her sister wakes her, and she kisses away her tears and she holds her as time ticks, as hearts beat, as bodies age and relationships bloom.
“I got you,” Alex whispers.
And that’s all Kara ever needs to know.
