Kicked off 2023 arts and culture life in Naarm at The opening night of @7methods. This play!! The playwright, Jasmine Lee-Jones is a force (to quote a friend). Woooo … incredible. Loved it. So many conversations to be had with this one … wooo! Bring your beloveds. There’s free food and entertainment after, so you can lounge and talk. . . I’m extremely honoured to have worked on / adapted the Community Engagement Strategy for Naarm audiences. I tell you, this production’s community engagement game is STRONG! And that’s because so many incredible Black women have put in the work to design a strategy that engages community from Sydney, Brisbane/Meanjin and now Melbourne/Naarm. I’m absolutely humbled to have added a little bit of spice to the incredible mix. Of course, strategy needs execution. A massive shout out to @amarxchi_ and her team who executed the Naarm community engagement strategy via @malthousetheatre 👏🏾👏🏾. The season is sold out! But there’s NOTLAF tix available for folks on the receiving end of systemic f*^ks^*%. Need NOTLAF? Please see my stories for deets. Or visit https://www.malthousetheatre.com.au/tickets/malthouse-theatre/seven-methods-of-killing-kylie-jenner/#eventTarget Even if you don’t have a ticket, Vyb Nights are free for all to attend. Vyb Nights 😍 Free food, drinks and entertainment. You heard. Bring a friend or two. It’s the perfect way to wrap up a night of thought-provoking theater. Last night was so much fun with DJ from @on3.studio, my fav @msniasha singing up a storm and @junglecityprojects #ChubbyDice setting the dance floor on fire. You know we like a good party to balance out the deep conversations. Next Vyb on Saturday night features DJ, poetry and comedy. But now I’m just telling you things you probably already knew. 😂 But maybe you need to go and experience. Co-produced by @malthousetheatre, @greendoortheatreco and @darlinghursttheatreco Co-directed by @z.okenyo and @sharileesebbens Produced by @leilaadelaideenright Have the best time at the theatre, my loves. #latergram The #MalthouseTheatre staged 3 nights of 3 short monologues by a trio of writers. Very varying results, some good, but at only 10mins each you could wait for the next. But the effect was drained of theatrical punch and had an air of inconsequentiality. My confession: I didn’t even watch the 3rd evening 😢 https://www.instagram.com/p/CChaUqOHrxh/?igshid=1nyf2k5gjc7mz

The Events ☆☆☆☆
Tumblr media
Humans are messed up. Seriously. We have carried out some of the must unimaginable, inconceivable, vile actions ever. So what happens after an unspeakable act of violence has been carried out? How do you deal with the aftermath of a massacre? When a gun-toting teenager, consumed by thoughts of cultural purity, targets a vicar’s choir, she becomes obsessed with trying to understand him and his actions. Could he have been stopped? Why did he do it? Who really was he?
The Events carries an ever-potent plot that sees two actors examine a vicar’s compulsion to understand a mass murder. The production featured an online disclaimer from the Malthouse Theatre, giving their thoughts to friends and family of the victims of the recent 2016 attack in Orlando, USA. It’s incredibly shocking and disheartening how fresh the issue at the core of this play is to a contemporary audience. However, this is when theatre is at its best: it can evoke such meaningful inquiries and sentiments that you never thought were possible; it can show you perspectives that were previously unknown to you.
The Events first premiered at the Edinburgh Festival in 2013 and is David Greig’s response to the violence unleashed by a Norwegian white supremacist in 2011. This Australian production features a different Melbourne choir each evening, which is really an homage to the arts community. The onstage choir provides a voice for the vicar’s outrage as she demands answers from friends, her lover, and the boy-killer himself. The choir carried such agency in the production; they functioned, as Clare Watson (the director) puts it, as a chorus. They crafted a light-hearted and romantic mood one moment and then the next, the audience would be left winded with a gloomy set of melodies and harmonies, in reference to the shooting. What a lovely idea to get different members of the community involved in a large scale production. I think the theatre community needs to embrace more of this! It was so nice to experience!
The application of lighting was phenomenal! It didn’t just signify key changes in the narrative and role transformations, but also visually highlighted the space and setting of scenes. The house lights were used effectively to open up the drama to the audience and really invite us into the action.
One key moment of the play that really struck me, and was something I discussed after the performance, was when the vicar was rebutting a response that her choir was a multi-cultural organisation. The vicar slowly replied that her choir was more than a simple label of ideology; the choir was a group of people. As the vicar listed the names of the late choir-singers, a wave of understanding rushed through the audience. Yes, the group were a multi-cultural organisation…they were also just a group of people coming together to make music. Perhaps it’s time we stop trying to label groups people and instead, communicate and connect with them as individuals.
The scenography was minimalistic, which worked wonders! The audience were simply ‘watching in’ on a choir’s rehearsal. We felt part of the onstage action, which was particularly effective when confronted with the retelling of the shooting.
As briefly mentioned, the production was directed by Clare Watson, the new AD for Western Australia’s Black Swan State Theatre Company. I was eager to check out her work and I haven’t been disappointed. I look forward to Clare’s work, in Perth, next year.
Overall, the production was fantastic! The Events was a meaningful, moving production that showed just how the aftermath of a mass shooting really affects people and communities involved. We were taken on a journey, seeking answers…and we were left with the thought of bewilderment. Bewilderment as to why such horrific, tragic incidents - like this - still occur today.
The Events is on at the Malthouse Theatre until 10th July...be sure to see it people of Melbourne!
