Praise Whump
I'm a sucker for when the whumpee is so desperate for affection they'll put up with anything from the whumper, so I figured for my first post I'd write one of those. I'd appreciate any feedback you can give me :)
...
Whumpee crouched in the corner of the cold, damp cell. The chains around their wrists chafed the raw skin, yet they clutched them tight, like they were the only thing stopping them from fading into the shadows around them.
The door opened with a creak and a shaft of light filtered into the darkness.
Whumpee whimpered, both in relief and in fear, as Whumper strode into the room.
Despite their aching limbs, Whumpee hoisted themselves onto their knees, straightening their back as well as they could with their wounds.
Whumper smiled with approval. "Good," he said, crouching down before Whumpee, who had their eyes glued to the floor in front of them. They warmed at the praise.
"We're going to play a little, Whumpee," he said, lifting Whumpee's chin to face him. "Would you like that?"
Whumpee almost shuddered at the thought. They knew what play meant. It meant that knife. It meant pain. But if they did well, it also meant Whumper's praise. And they really wanted Whumper's praise.
Whumpee nodded, and Whumper smiled. He leaned down and began to unlock the cuffs, careful not to touch Whumpee's skin. He never touched them, not unless he was hurting them.
He was training them, Whumpee knew. And it was working. They were beginning to crave the pain, if only for the comfort of Whumper.
Whumpee stood on shaky legs, following a few steps after Whumper with their head down. When they emerged into the antechamber outside the cell, Whumpee's heart did a little leap. This was where they played. Where they got to touch Whumper, and hear him whisper praise. There were two other doors leading off of the chamber. One heading upstairs. One to the room where Whumpee was punished.
They shuddered at the thought of that room, doing their best not to look at the iron door.
Whumper sat on the chair in the middle of the chamber, watching as Whumpee sank to their knees before him. "You know what to do," he said, and Whumpee nodded. "Yes, Whumper," they said, rising again to gather the supplies from around the room.
They were quick in their work, grabbing the bucket of water and the cloth and placing them beside Whumper. They took the knife last. Long and sharp and sparkling, it had cut every one of the scars into Whumpee's skin. They lifted it with shaking hands and stood before Whumper, offering it to him.
"Good," Whumper told them, taking the knife, "come here."
Whumpee bit their lip to keep from sighing as they sat down on Whumper's lap, their hands quickly knotting themselves into his t-shirt. He was so warm, and Whumpee was so cold.
Whumper didn't give any warning as he began to slide the knife down their shoulder, shallow but still drawing blood. Whumpee whimpered, clutching him tighter. Whumper shushed them, one hand stroking their arm as the other drew the knife down across their spine. He was always careful not to permanently damage Whumpee. He needed them in good condition so he could keep playing with them.
Whumpee sobbed silently as Whumper carved up their back, praising and shushing them with every cut.
"You're doing so good, Whumpee."
"Shhh, you can do it," he would say, as Whumpee clutched onto his soft t-shirt and sobbed into his shoulder.
By the time he was done, Whumpee's back was little more than a mess of blood, but Whumpee almost didn't want it to be over. They wanted to stay in Whumper's lap, and feel his warm chest and soft clothes and hear his gentle praise.
Whumper carefully unknotted Whumpee's hands from his shirt and pushed him gently off. Whumpee whimpered at the loss of contact, but slid off of Whumper's lap and fell into a kneel before him. Whumper smiled. They were being so good.
Whumper stood and walked to the small sink against the wall, placing the knife there, before returning to where Whumpee knelt. He'd have Whumpee clean it later, as always. But first, he had to deal with Whumpee's back.
He needed Whumpee ready and healed for their next session.
He knelt behind them, and, using the cloth and water, washed off the wounds on Whumpee's back. Careful not to touch their skin. Careful that only the rough scratch of the cloth and the bite of the cold water were felt by the silent Whumpee.
When the wounds were clean, Whumper dressed them cleanly, then stepped away from them, and turned towards the room where he punished Whumpee. He strolled inside, shut and locked the door behind him, as he left Whumpee to clean and deal with the bloody mess in the room.
It was a warning. If Whumpee didn't do a good enough job, they would be joining Whumper in that room.
Or if they displeased Whumper by spilling the bucket of bloody water on the floor, like they just had.
"You know you need to be punished for this Whumpee?" Whumper told them as they knelt on the ground, ready to beg. But they knew it was futile, and just nodded.

Just saw your recent post about lady whump and I wanted to thank you for hitting the nail on the head when it comes to lady whump and the problems with it. I couldn't figure out why my favorite whumpees were female but I couldn't enjoy ALL female whump despite my clear enjoyment of it. I'm much more picky about the females I whump than the men, even though my favorite characters are actually woman. I thought it had something to do with actor preference (which it does to a point) 1/3
but I'm realizing it has more to do with the style of writing for me and the tropes involved than the whumpee themself. Because you're so right about lady whump being written different than male. I'm not a fan of the damsel in distress trope but I love a broken strong character and those are almost always written for men.I'm a lurker in the whump community because my favorite whumpees are female (Regina Mills currently because she's such a well written whumpee) 2/3
and I just don't feel like there's a lot of love for lady whump. But preferences aside, it does make me wonder how much good lady whump goes unappreciated or overlooked simply because there's a stigma around it due to bad writing surrounding female characters and not necessarily because of the whump itself. Anyways I'm rambling now but thank you for putting into words some of the problems I've had. 3/3
------------- why did tumblr take away our line breaks --------------
Thanks for the messages, Nonny! I’m glad that post of mine helped put your problems and thoughts into words. It’s good to know I’m not totally in left field with my thinking on this, too, because it’s just something I’ve only started tossing around as a whump theory, but I think it’s got a lot of merit!
And the more I think on these subjects, the more I notice other aspects of it, too... Like, most shows have their different “types” of men - Say, Criminal Minds, how it has the more “physically weak/vulnerable” type like Spencer Reid but also the “physically average/stoic” type like Aaron Hotchner, AND the “physically strong/tough” type like Derek Morgan... and they coincide with the types of men we whumpers tend to like seeing whumped. Well, generally speaking... women tend to come in much fewer “types” in Hollywood. And those types are basically “shapely/useful” and “not shapely/comic relief”. Oh, and then there’s the “shapely/bitchy” category, usually reserved for villains and mean girls.
And I think the problem STARTS there, because let’s be real, most female characters fall into that chasm of interchangeability and lack of individuality, even today. It’s getting better, yeah, but it’s still not moved much beyond “So we have a team made up of the strong guy, the stoic guy, the smart guy, the funny guy, and the girl...” mode of storywriting.
And we know that whumpers who like male whump generally have a “type” that they go for - and will even complain about their frustration when a show whumps “the wrong one” for them. Naturally, whumpers who like female whump ALSO have a “type”... but if Hollywood’s never showing/whumping the specific “female type” that an individual whumper goes for then how would that individual ever even realize they LIKE ladywhump at all?
Anyway, in that line of thinking, I think this is why I’ve generally always found shows with predominantly male casts and “teams” tend to have crappy ladywhump. Shows like Once, built on more female-led casts, tend to have better ladywhump. And I happen to agree with you that Regina is an EXCELLENT whumpee, because she is definitely a strong, independent woman who doesn’t take any shit... which is, not-so-oddly-enough, the exact same “type” I go for in my male whumpees, as well.
I’m also getting fascinated by the lame whump in Lifetime movies. Lemme tell you, it’s lame as all hell, because these are like C class made-for-TV movies on a budget and all that, so it’s generally not “great” in the acting or staging or make-up departments... but because these films are MADE for a predominantly female audience, the “types” of female characters are a lot more varied and created more so to appeal to women. And I notice the exact opposite phenomenon going on in Lifetime movies - The male characters are all basically the same cardboard cutout Idiot Husband/Boyfriend/Murderer character, and the whump they get is generally stupid, like a 2x4 to the back of the head and we don’t see him again for, like, 20 minutes while the woman saves the day. Whereas when the women get whumped, you see all the spills and thrills and peril we normally associate with men getting in Hollywood. It’s really all very fascinating, and I find myself entranced by the different reactions I have to male whump and female whump when seen through this medium.
I gotta apologize if this post is rambly or lacking focus, because this really is just me spitballing here and throwing ideas out into the ether, because I’m thinking a lot about all of this, but I’m still not fully “locked in” on all the wheres and whyfores of it all. It’s sort of more like a jumble of ideas and thoughts at this point, less like a cohesive theory.
But yeah, the more I’m thinking about it, the more I’m coming to the conclusion that the lack of love ladywhump gets compared to malewhump has a lot less to do with US and a lot more to do with the differences in the whump that gets MADE of each gender and how it’s done...
Oh, and check out my Bonus Regina Whump tag if you haven’t already :D That’s where I very cleverly hide the Regina Whump stuff I’ve made ;)

Fellow bi here ✌️✌️ and while I don't typically enjoy ladywhump in visual mediums (because it was most often made by men *le sigh*) I enjoy it equally to malewhump in written whump! I can go both ways easily as long as it's like a book rather than a TV show. That's not to say I've never liked ladywhump in a TV show/movie but I ALMOST always prefer malewhump compared to being pretty equally split between the two in books.
Hi! I'm wondering if the fact that I'm bi has anything to do with my ladywhump preference? 🤔 Because in instances of say Star Trek Voyager's Captain Janeway (be still my bi heart 💙💙💙) being whumped, I get soooo many whumperflies. But it might also be the difference in say, Janeway takes no shit and her whump is more adventure-based rather than ABUSE-based, you know? Because screw abuse-based whump. (Sorry if this is incomprehensible lmao I'm not sure how to put my thoughts to words 😂)
I’ve had a lot of bi individuals tell me this, so I think you might be right! I love the psychological side of whump, though it makes my head hurt trying to understand or explain it sometimes :)
