Major Attractions in Khandala
When you think of taking off somewhere for the weekend, what place comes to your mind? You think of some cool place surrounded by natural beauty. Somewhere in the hills, near a lake or a quiet town, etc. are the places of interest for such a vacation. Hill station is one such place. In fact, it is the preferred choice of many.
Khandala is one of the many hill stations that comes to our mind when we think of hill stations in Maharashtra. Along with its twin hill station Lonavala, Khandala is one of the popular Weekend Getaways in Silvassa. Located at one end of the Bhorghat (valley), Khandala is about 3 kilometers away from Lonavala. Also, the Mumbai-Pune expressway passes through Khandala. So, it is easily accessible from either of the cities.
There are so many beautiful spots places in and around the hill station, which makes this place a perfect place for a mini vacation during the weekend. Some of the major attractions are:-
● Karla caves - This is one of the most popular attraction of the city. They are rock cut Buddhist caves dating back to 2000 years ago. These caves were built during the reign of Satavahana rulers. Known for their amazing architecture, these caves have maximum number of Chaityas built for the Buddhist monks. Chaityas are Buddhist shrines with a stupa at one end.
● Bhaja Caves - These primitive caves are very close to the Malavali railway station. Their structure is quite similar to the Karla caves, but they are smaller in size comparatively. There are a lot of intricate sculptures in this cave of human figures and deities. Many interesting mythological stories form the basis of these images and sculptures. One of the characteristic attributed to its uniqueness is that the rays of the setting sun enters the interiors of this cave.
● Duke’s nose - This point is named after the Duke of Wellington.  This is because the Duke had a pointy nose that resembled this cliff.  This point offers a breathtaking view of Khandala; all the natural elements such as mountains, forests and valleys. This makes it a popular tourist spot.
● Kunefalls - It is located at the center point of the KhandalaLonavala valley. It is a beautiful tourist spot surrounded by greenery. Nearly every part of this waterfall is almost 100 meters high. Local transport buses ply in this area, making it easily accessible. It is a popular picnic spot for the locals as well as the tourists.
● Tiger’s leap - It is another popular point that offers a magnificent view of the surrounding area. Also, it has its own uniqueness. While viewing the valley from certain spots in this location, it appears as if a tiger is leaping across the valley. The illusion of leaping tiger makes it a major attraction for the tourist.
● Reversing Station - Formerly a station used by the railway department, the Reversing station has now become a pleasantly charming spot. Although unused by the railway department, it has become a popular destination for those who want to have a magnificent view of the area. Even during the night, one can enjoy the picturesque view of the lighting of the nearby cities. It is as if the stars have descended on earth from the sky.

India Architecture Before Common Era ( BCE ): The Bhaja Caves
Tumblr media
Introduction
India has the most amazing ancient rock-cut architecture and cultural heritage at more than 1500 historical sites. One of the fine portrayals of stone carved architecture is found at the Bhaje or Bhaja caves that date back to the 2nd century BCE. An example of the Buddhist architecture in the initial stages that is deemed to be sculptured by the Hinayana sect is represented by these caves. Constructed on a trade route from the Arabian sea to the Deccan plateau in ancient times it is an assemblage of 22 caves that comprises 14 rock-cut stupas, a magnificent chaityagraha, and many viharas. Meditation and residence of Buddhist monks were the main motive that is still fulfilled today as the caves still support the Buddhist monks that are taking education.
Location
Standing in the Indrayani river valley in the Deccan plateau the Bhaja caves are located at Lonavala around 3 km from Malavali station on the Mumbai Pune road in Maharashtra state. The west facing caves stand tall at 120 meters above the Bhaja village in a green verdant surrounding.
The Bhaja Chaitya Griha
Tumblr media
The Bhaja Chaitya Griha is the most distinguished chaitya that is said to be one of the first ancient chaityas that are still in preserved condition as per the Archeological Survey of India and the biggest of all the Bhaja caves. This chaitya griha has a rectangular hall of 18 meters long, 8.50 meters wide, and 6.5 meters in height with an arched horseshoe shaped ceiling that is supported by the Burmese teak wood rib beams. The arched gateway has a horseshoe shaped chaitya window carved above it while a number of small chaitya windows sit on the fencing motifs on both sides.
On the inside there are 27 octagonal pillars that are without a capital in a somewhat leaning position mimicking the wooden pillars that were used to bear the load of the ceiling in the ancient times due to its inclination. But here they are carved as decorative artifacts after the realisation in the later period that upright pillars can also do the same.
The walls of the chaitya griha have the classic Mauryan glossy finish with in all 8 inscriptions that bear the name of some donors and reliefs that express Indian mythological tales along with Buddha images. It is here in the inscriptions that we find mention of the existence of these caves to be of 2200 years old.
The main stone carved stupa in the centre has a hermika i.e. fence like structure on the top with a hole on top to hold a wooden umbrella. From the outside one can notice that the whole verandah structure resembles a high rise building with verandas and windows with notable reliefs.
The 14 stupas
There are in all 14 stupas out of which 9 stupas are carved out of the smaller cave while 5 stand inside. Built in memory of worshipped monks some bear their name inscriptions with their specific titles holding the remains of the monks that stayed in the viharas till their death. They form a magnificent space structure one can roam in between to admire their beauty.
Tumblr media
Sculptures
Deemed to have been painted in vibrant colours before enclosing in plaster, the sculptures here present excellent art pieces like that of the famous ‘ dancing couple ‘ in the last cave that is at the south. Interestingly the symbolic representation or important life incidents of Buddha are found throughout in the form of images of lotus, elephant or throne. However after 4 th century AD the paintings of Buddha became part of the caves.Demons driven over by chariots of royal women on wooden relief can be seen on the verandahs. Carving of a woman playing tabla with another one dancing discards the previous assumption that the musical instrument is of a foreign origin.
One astonishing fact is that the Bhaja caves have shady insides but the windows here are carved in such a unique way that the everyday setting sun rays enter the cave to illuminate the god and goddesses stature. Such and many other works of significant archeological structures are present here and so it can be definitely said that the uphill climb of 180 to 230 steps to reach the Bhaja caves has the potential to please your eyes with the wonderful Buddhist art and architecture of ancient India.

Dhak Bhairi Caves
Tumblr media
A challenging and dangerous trek to Dhak Bhairi Caves
Dhak Bhairi Caves also known as the “Hill Fort” is situated in the village of Malavali in Pune District of Maharashtra. Both the Dhak Fort and bahiri caves are located on the same mountain near Karjat city.  The place is famous for trekking and has an elevation of 2700 feet that is 823 meters. It is dedicated to the lord of “Adivasis”.  Although the place is mistaken quite often to be a fort, yet it is a cave. I had recently visited the place with a group of 10 people, and this was probably one among the most difficult treks in my life. Walking for almost about 40minutes through the lush green forest one can find the direction board which shows “Bhimashankar” written on it. One can go and visit the Dhak Bhairi Caves but let me tell you it is a 12hour journey on foot better to be avoided. We kept walking until we reached the place where the path ends on either side and the only path that takes you is a steep rocky lane. Be careful and steady at this stretch, which is of only 10-15 feet the reason is if you tremble and slip then you will go straight down for another 200-400ft. After reaching the base of this rocky patch, we took the thin path which ran along the side of the vertical slope of the hill.Although it seems fine at the beginning yet becomes very calculative by the end. The rocks are uneven and slippery therefore it needs absolute concentration to go up step by step. At times there may be no safety rope and one wrong step may take you 100 feet down into the deep dense forest below. This is certainly not for faint-hearted people.
History
Dhak Bhairi Caves was first discovered by an eminent historian named, Mr Gopal Nilkanth Dandekar. According to him the brave Chatrapati Shivaji once visited this place. Being able to find peace in its pious and holy atmosphere, Shivaji Maharaj offered a gold plate to the Lord. The caves have water tanks from which you can drink. There are utensils inside the caves. One can use them and must keep them back clean in its previous place. There’s a rumour which says one who tries to steal anything from the cave dies or bad luck follows him until death. The temple is forbidden for ladies to enter. In the course of the journey, we saw the following dams Uskan dam, Shiravata dam and Shomawadi Dam
Things to carry
Luggage packed in big trekking sack, all luggages must be packed in plastic bag separately A sleeping bag, mat, shawl (for overnight stay) Torch with extra set of batteries A sweater or warm wear Trekking shoes are must (chappals, sandals etc are prohibited) Water bottle (minimum 1.5ltr compulsory), electoral/ Glucon-D or any other energizer and personal medication Spare set of clothes, towels, napkins etc Camera, binoculars (optional)       Read the full article

Best One Day Picnic Spots near Pune To Go Out With Your Family
Pune is a budding IT hub, which makes it one of the busiest cities in the country. Everybody seems to be so engrossed in their work that they hardly get time for family. Especially for the working class, the hectic schedules make spending quality time with family a difficult task. It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to have a strong family bond, which sadly is lost in this day and age of technology and social media.
Therefore, family outings become even more important, as they let us leave all the tension behind, and enjoy the company of those closest to our hearts. So if you’re inspired to have a family one day trip from Pune, here are your best options:
Della Adventure Park, Lonavala
Della Adventure Park in Lonavala is among the top one-day picnic spots near Pune for family. There are several adventure activities which let you and your family enjoy the day to the fullest. Some of these are group activities that the whole family can enjoy, like Paintball, High Rope, Low Rope, and Vertical Rope Challenges, Roller Zorbing, etc. While the big guys wreck havoc on the mud and slush filled track with Dirt Bikes and ATVs, kids can enjoy Bungee Trampoline, Aqua Zorbing, Bumper Boat, Flying Fox, etc.
Apart from adventure activities, the food at Della, served by the 5 multi-cuisine restaurants, is the best in Lonavala. Especially, the liqueur-laced fudges and premium chikkis are simply awesome. And if you get tired at the adventure park, you can have a soothing therapeutic massage at the 24×7 exotic SPA.
Lohagad Fort, Malavali
Pune is the Cultural Capital of Maharashtra, and Punekars love the legendary history of the state. If you’re one of them, you’ll love the Lohagad Fort, which is just an hour and a half away from the city. The historic fort gives a glimpse of the great Maratha Empire of yore and the glorious days of the state. Kids will particularly be thrilled to have such mesmerizing scenes all around.
The picturesque fort is served as a save house to the Maratha Peshwas and was also the place where King Shivaji stored all the treasures of his kingdom. Lohagad Fort offers uninterrupted views of the pristine Sahyadri Mountains, standing tall with all its pride and glory. The fort has a 1500-meter long, and 30-meter wide section, called ‘Vicchu Kata’, which literally means the Scorpion’s Sting.
Pawna Lake, Kamshet
Spending a day by the Pawna Lake is one of the best options if you simply want to enjoy a relaxed and rejuvenating picnic. The serene beauty of the waterbody, with plenty of activities to indulge in, make Kamshet a wonderful one day retreat. Apart from a lazy afternoon, you can also enjoy a few exotic adventure sports like paragliding.
Kamshet is just an hour away from Pune and is surrounded by majestic mountains. The climate here remains pleasant throughout the year, though monsoons can be too much to handle near the lake. You can also enjoy boating, and playing outdoor games like cricket, football, volleyball, etc with your family members.
