The 'Montgomery Riverboat Brawl' spoke to millions in 2023
The summer was defined by a viral video that will be remembered in 100 years
For many Americans, New Year’s Eve is a time for reflection, celebration and dedication. Whatever the previous 365-plus days have sent our way are looked back upon with some level of wisdom hopefully gained, while the upcoming calendar is anticipated in the most innocent way possible. The entire event is capped off with a tradition popularized by a newspaper man but invented for the sea.
What you see in Times Square these days at the behest of Ryan Seacrest, and before that Dick Clark, is the brainchild of Adolph Ochs, who owned The New York Times and started the practice in 1908. Now commonly known as a ball drop, it’s an extravagant twist on a technological marvel that was initially invented for an entirely different purpose: marine chronometers.
Time balls, as they were known, helped boats set their clocks when they came to town. When ships pulled in, they knew what time it was, literally.
As 2023 comes to a close, there is not a more apt metaphor for what was the story of the year in Black America. A hundred years from now, its legacy will still stand.
The “Montgomery Riverboat Brawl” likely won’t be forgotten in the yearly cycle of another league or awards season. The when and where is as important as what happened that afternoon in Alabama.
To begin August, the National Association of Black Journalists’ national convention descended upon Birmingham, Alabama, a welcome sight for folks in town. The annual confab for the industry was met with open arms and the sense of community was about as good as it had been between town and function since I’ve been doing this job. Black people had a ton of fun with each other, shared generational experiences per usual, and because of where it is, returned to many historical places that are a part of our shared lineage, such as Selma, which is about 90 minutes away from Birmingham.
Quite a few folks took the trip. Little did they know that barely a week later, the city most famously known for the Edmund Pettus Bridge and Bloody Sunday of 1965, would be back in the news via a previously humdrum Facebook business page.
During that span in Birmingham, Major League Baseball unveiled the logo for their next special regular-season game, this time at the oldest ballpark in America. The game will officially be called MLB at Rickwood: A Tribute to the Negro Leagues. It’s a genuinely magical place, for sure. As the state capital, Montgomery is home of the Montgomery Biscuits, the Tampa Bay Rays’ AA affiliate, which will be playing against the Birmingham Barons two days prior to the MLB game at Rickwood Field.

The Birmingham Times, the local Black community weekly, dedicated its issue to the NABJ conference entirely, with the headline reading, in part, “Birmingham welcomes the voices of a generation.”
Indeed, it did.
In a summer in which blockbuster flicks made $500 million a pop, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé gracefully allowed us in their orbit in their different ways, and hip-hop celebrated its 50-year anniversary, the place known as the “Cradle of the Confederacy” sparked one of the most important historical moments this journalist can think of in many years, on many fronts.
You could teach an entire university class about the multiple layers of generational trauma unleashed in the confrontation. The immediacy of the news connected to the history of the site and the legal untangling that followed (six people were charged in the incident, including Reggie Bernard Ray, known best as the Black man swinging a chair) are the kinds of things people make entire seasons of longform podcasts about. If I were an author, I’d write a book about it.
Montgomery itself is like a choose-your-own-adventure of the most horrifically f— up racist s— you can imagine. All the American classics are there: First confederate capital. Vicious redlining and economic apartheid for generations. Domestic terrorism. It took 200 years for them to elect a Black mayor. That was four years ago.
In specific to the brawl, it’s borderline bizarre how on the nose the whole incident was. The night before, 45 held a campaign rally at that very spot. On the very day of the fight, a group of Black women concluded a two-day healing event with a ceremony sharing their happiness and thanks by laying flowers in the water at the Riverfront.
Two hours later, the pop-off heard around the nation went down. All of course happening at the very spot where enslaved people were brought to town. The very dock. On a boat, likely of the same name.
Of course, there are a million wild things that we could talk about the proceedings but those are for other avenues. What I simply cannot get over is how direct the line is between the very specific interaction of these people and where they came from most immediately.

Riverboat dock worker involved in viral Montgomery, Alabama brawl charged with assault: records
The white folks were friends and family of an owner of a mini-mart in Selma, having a lovely day until they decided to get drunk and basically show their behinds. There are a trove of angles, deep dives, rumors and other things about this specific unfolding that are one thing. Here’s one, two, three, four … nine, if you need that.
But I can’t get past the riverboat. The carrying joke of the moment is that the boat was named the Harriet, like Tubman, making the whole situation much funnier as a solid pop culture joke of what happens when you get your a– whipped. The reality, while far more grim in its origins, not unlike the pugilistic proceedings themselves, makes me laugh a lot more.
That riverboat is named the Harriott II. It’s ostensibly a lovely time just like any other water cruise deep in the American South. It was dedicated in 2008. When it arrived, a lot of people showed up to watch. It aired live on local news. Sure, great. It was named after a boat that famously was the first riverboat that made the trip from Mobile to Montgomery to pick up cotton. … OK. In EIGHTEEN TWENTY ONE. Good lord.
The beatdown boat is named after a boat which a.) definitely carried enslaved people, but b.) was clearly a literal part of the economic engine that fundamentally disenfranchised Black Americans economically, nevermind tried to destroy us humanistically. And guess what that boat was likely named after? You guessed it.
Well, you can just continue down the river, a.k.a. the supply chain in those days. There were not one but two slave ships, each at one point named Harriott or some variation thereof, that were active in triangular trade. Naming a boat after any of these vessels is certainly a choice.
There was a time when those white men would have been fully within their right to effectively single out and proceed to hurt that boat captain to their heart’s content. And way further back than Jim Crow. Look up Virginia’s “casual killing act” of 1669 if you want to ruin your day. But these days, not even close. Those same negroes who you dragged across the ocean on boats named Harriott are now jumping out of boats named Harriott to administer the fade of a lifetime when you wrong our people.
As many of my friends from other lands say often: Only in America.
Perhaps most satisfying about that entire ordeal is that so much of it was very specifically a function of social media. We learned about this through various posts that not only showed but featured incredible contextual narrative provided inherently from those documenting it. We learned everything we know about the offending parties from their posts earlier in the day.
Aaren Rudolph, aka Aquamayne, has a whole new future to consider. The fact that this news was spread, nevermind occurred, due to just the regular tendencies of Black folks just trying to be themselves and stay prudent is incredible to me. Black Twitter, which was once ruled dead but now has come to include basically the combined algorithms of our diaspora across platforms, had a legit rebirth. We told y’all the truth, showed it, too, and people just had to wear it.
Alabama has been about that action. Fun fact: The Black Panther Party began in nearby Lowndes County, too. None of this is news in terms of the resistance, but it was also a reminder that while we have a collective experience that we share and cherish, there is also very much the importance of understanding individual communities for themselves.
Yet, as my FYPs say — a win is a win.

SZA and the year quite like no other
It was a role reversal that was almost too fantastical for Forrest Gump, which won six Academy Awards but these days is widely regarded as hokey but touching. Too over the top, too conveniently aligned with too good of an emotional ending. In the 1994 Tom Hanks movie, Gump, the main lovable character from Greenbow, Alabama, plays college football, becomes an All-American and meets the president.
Perhaps the most laugh-out-loud scene comes when the title character makes good on his word to pay back his best friend. Their shrimp company blows up and Benjamin Buford Blue’s mother faints on the porch when she gets a check from a white man from a fictional town in Alabama.
In the following scene, there’s a reversal from when we are introduced to her as part of a generation of Black women whose lone job it is to serve white men shrimp in dining rooms dating back to plantation days. Now, Blue’s mother is the one getting served shrimp and it’s a white woman doing it. The joke obviously being that after years of having no option but to serve white folks, it was time for that to change. The role reversal is so swift and direct that you can’t help but laugh.
Montgomery, the town affectionately known as “The Gump,” is now ground zero for one of the most serious but somehow hilarious exchanges of the year. Last month, the man who threw his hat in the air — signaling he was in distress to his fellow people — held a press conference. One of the humans in the altercation has pressed charges against the boat co-captain, but the city has not.
“It was just so shocking. Now, for me to get charged for something I do every day, it’s my job? It’s just shocking to me,” Damien Pickett II said in November. “For me to get charged for something I do on the regular [to] make people happy, put smiles on their face?”
The last five years in the United States of America have felt like quite a bit of a reckoning. Over time, the long slow institutional battles we’ve fought to untangle have come to light, and many people understand what an uphill battle there is for any sort of sanity in society, nevermind justice.
For a non-fictional event to play out so poetically, violently and publicly — while leaving many feeling like the result was satisfactory — speaks directly to the lived existence of millions of humans who call this country home by choice or by force. ChatGPT could not have created a scenario this complete.
Someday many years from now, someone will consider acting a fool on the dock again. And on that day, deep inside, something will tell them that’s probably not a smart plan.
When the ancestors speak to you, it’s a good idea to listen. Lesson learned for 2023.

october was your favorite month of the year, different colors of leaves falling off the trees, laying on the sidewalk, sweaters, pumpkins and the halloween energy have always thrilled you to the gills. but the worst part, the biggest con, was definitely the flu season. stuffed, constantly relapsing runny nose, fever and other symptoms were the only things you’ve hated about october.
unfortunately, you caught cold. and you had to skip school. your boyfriend george was by your side, his mom making you all of these soups that was supposed to give strength. george began to stay overnight and your parents were fine with it. they were calm, because they trusted him a lot.
but you had to go to school and the day of your comeback was running only faster and faster. when the stress hit its apogee, you felt like passing out. all the homework accumulated put you under the pressure and it cause you to stay up late almost four days straight.
it worried your boyfriend so much that he talked to your parents for a permission to stay overnight. it was getting late when he forced you to take a break. you were a complete wreck of a man. hungry, tired and with a migraine.
“y- y/n-y/n, please leave it” george said quite annoyed, seeing the miserable expression on your worn out face. “let me take care of you, please y/n. i see you’re exhausted” he whined in disbelief. taking your free hand, he made you lay on the bed.
well, he didn’t expect you to fell asleep immediately. well, you did fall asleep, but as he realized what had happened, he wrapped his arms around your waist and hugged you. finally… george would sighed heavily, feeling relieving calm.

Two Hashiras are gone now. The shock of Kyojuro’s death still looms above the demon slayer corps, and now Tengen is retiring due to injuries. Upper moon six was defeated, but the losses were more significant than the wins. As you stood in front of the line-up, the pressure you felt could have buried you six feet in the dirt. You could see Sanemi and Obanai eyeing your slung-up arm with visible disapproval. You can already imagine them voicing out their opinions as you introduce yourself.
“I’m (L/n) (Y/n), the Earth Hashira. It’s nice to meet you all.” The rest of you, that is.
“This is what the corps has come to; promoting injured slayers to our ranks,” Sanemi scowled.
“Sanemi,” Kagaya started, but you interrupted respectfully, then turned to Sanemi.
“I understand this is not the first impression you or anyone else are expecting, but I assure you my current status will not impend my ability to do my job. I will uphold the expectations of a Hashira.”
“When you recover,” Shinobu added.
“Kocho, haven’t they been under your care for six months now?” Obanai questioned.
Indeed, your latest mission had left you battered. It was a given considering the run-in with a lower moon, and you recently got back on your feet and started some physical therapy.
When Shinobu confirmed Obanai’s question, he looked at Kagaya, “Master, surely there is another slayer more suitable for the promotion. While (L/n) has been bed-ridden, others have been training day in and out.”
“(Y/n) is a hard worker like everyone else. They had been recovering from previous injuries and still took down a lower moon. Their resume speaks for itself. If that’s not enough, Giyuu has also vouched for their talent,” Kagaya informed, and all heads snapped in Giyuu’s direction, who nodded silently.
“I take anything Giyuu says with a grain of salt,” Obanai chimed, to which Sanemi shared a similar sentiment. It was clear that there is only one way to prove your worth; get back on the job, injuries be damned.
You bite your bottom lip while wriggling your arm out of the cast, which had not fully healed. Just your luck; your dominant arm got snapped in two by that sadistic lower moon. The surgical scar was not as big as Shinobu made it out to be.
You could wiggle your fingers without trouble, but you wince as you straighten out your arm. The flesh over the break was burning red and tender to a feather-light touch. Nevertheless, you took a training sword and did your best to push through warm-ups without passing out. You had learned to numb pain using total concentration breathing, but it could only go so far as to block it throughout the body.
Still, you were focused enough not to notice Giyuu had returned from his mission until he called out to you in disbelief.
“This again, (Y/n).” Giyuu’s stoic expression drops to a frown. This occurrence has become a habit since the Hashira meeting nearly a week ago.
“I’m fine. I mean it this time,” you heave, wiping a profuse amount of sweat building upon your brow.
“That’s enough for today, (Y/n),” Giyuu quickly wrestles the sword out of your hands. He wraps an arm around your waist to bring you inside the estate, but you stand stone still.
“I’m fine, love. I’m as sturdy as the earth beneath me.”
Giyuu gave you a skeptical look before draping you over his shoulder and walking off inside, making sure to retrieve your cast in passing. You wriggle around but do not kick or punch. Harming your boyfriend is the last thing you want to do.
Soon, you are lying in the cushiony covers of your shared futon, and Giyuu shoves your arm back into its cast, making you wince as it's constricting hold. “Giyuu, I-”
Giyuu places a finger to your lips, “Whatever you do- do not make a sound.” You huff defiantly, but the tears pricking the corner of your eyes tell Giyuu a different tale of your thought process. “I understand, (Y/n). You want to get back to show Iguro and Shinazugawa your worth. You can’t be at peak performance if you have not properly healed. So please, worry less about them and focus on your recovery.”
You wanted to argue, and you tried, but with Giyuu’s arms encasing you securely to him, you couldn’t resist and lean into his comforting embrace. “Okay, hun.”

hi, any advice on timeline and era etc stuff? I have dyscalculia so numbers and measurements are meaningless to me and it’s really difficult to figure out how much time should lapse (on a large scale; time periods, millennia, eras, etc, not stuff like in one persons lifespan) between eras and events, especially in regards to political n social n technological etc changes
Feral: That depends. There isn’t one answer. You’re asking for longer time periods than a generation or a lifetime, but for scale, take what’s happening now. How many calamities, major political events, social trends, and changes in technology (and how we interact with it) have happened in the year 2020? Since the year 2016? Since 2008? Since 2001? How are they grouped together or spaced apart? And these are all working on each other. In the USA where I live, the 9/11 attacks absolutely have a direct causal effect with the politics that led to the 2016 election (actually before that a Supreme Court decision in the 2000 election also had an impact on that result), and the results of the 2016 election impacted how COVID has been handled this year. That’s 20 years, so when we’re looking at longer timeframes, we scale up. We see gaps and groupings and there just isn’t a specific “oh every decade/score/century, these types of events happen.”
To quote a particularly relevant introduction on Wikipedia:
This results in descriptive abstractions that provide convenient terms for periods of time with relatively stable characteristics. However, determining the precise beginning and ending to any ‘period’ is often arbitrary, since it has changed over time over the course of history.
To the extent that history is continuous and not generalized, all systems of periodization are more or less arbitrary. Yet without named periods, however clumsy or imprecise, past time would be nothing more than scattered events without a framework to help us understand them.
Eras, of the non-geological or -cosmological sort, or time periods are culturally determined, completely variable in length, and often overlap. For example, the beginning of the Victorian Era, 64 years, (defined by Victoria’s rule of England) of the Anglo-influenced world overlapped with the Antebellum Era, 78 years, (defined by political and social tensions in the lead up to the American Civil War) of the United States, which is also part of the Anglo-influenced world, and then following the end of the Antebellum Era, was the American Civil War, 4 years, and then the Reconstruction Era, 14 years (the first 2 of which are within the Civil War), which are both fully contained within the Victorian Era. Typically, when you are trying to think about eras, think about political rulership, wars, and large scale trends like artistic styles. It may also be helpful to familiarize yourself with the Three-Age System, which can be applied individually on cultures, rather describing trends for the whole world.
What it really comes down to when we think of eras and time periods is almost like a type of pareidolia. People see groupings of like things happening and put this grouping into a bubble of time, which kinda doesn’t actually exist in objective reality and is more or less a group hallucination on a massive scale. It calls to mind what Zeno’s arrow might have actually been trying to describe - not to say that this paradox is infallible, but it’s an interesting thought exercise, especially once you get into the quantum Zeno effect.
Now that I have fully diverged from the question at hand, we’ll get back to it. Let’s look at one technology type and how much time elapses between developments as well as some tie-in technological, social, and political forces that may be acting on the developments or that the developments might be acting on. I’ll also note how this technology traverses the eras of history as I find that looking at one discrete set over time is easier than just trying to look at the big picture. Let’s look at the history of printing.
(With hopes that it will be easier for you to conceptualize, I will use simplified (aka rounded up/down) timeframes written numerically rather than spelled out or via terms like decade or century so at the very least you can compare length of numbers. I’m also going to link as many Wikipedia articles as I can - I like Wikipedia for this because of its incredible cross-indexing and how it strings relevant articles together into a series, often chronologically. If the numbers are still challenging for you, I will summarize without at the end.)
5,520 years ago, the very first form of printing we know about is done with cylinders rolled over wet clay in Sumer in 3500 BCE, the beginning of the Early Bronze Age.
3,700 years later, woodblock printing is developed in China somewhere around 200 CE/AD, just after the end of the Pax Romana in Europe.
700 years later, the next development of printing is movable type, which is developed in China in 1040. 26 years later, on the other side of the world, in 1066 is the Battle of Hastings and the establishment of the Norman Era of rulership in England, in another 20 years, in 1086, the Domesday Book is hand written in 2 volumes: 1 is 764 8”x15” pages, the other 900 8”x11” pages.
400 years later gives us the Gutenburg printing press that is developed in Germany (at the time in the Holy Roman Empire) in 1440. This is during the Renaissance Era; it’s also the Era of Humanism, and often called the Early Modern Period. Martin Luther will write the 95 Theses less than 80 years later and start the Protestant Reformation, largely thanks to the ability for the theses to be easily copied by the printing press and spread quickly.
75 years later we have etching in 1515. 90 years later, the first weekly “true” newspaper, the Relation, begins printing in 1604.
130 years later we have mezzotint in 1642, which is the start of the First English Civil War, which will last for 4 years. Depending on your preference, the Age of Enlightenment either began 5 years before or 40 years later (unless you’re French).
130 years later we have aquatint in 1772. That is right at the beginning of the American Revolution: 2 years after the Boston Massacre; 1 year before the Boston Tea Party; 2 years before the Intolerable Acts and the First Continental Congress; 3 years before Patrick Henry’s “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” Speech (which is printed and shared across the colonies), Paul Revere’s Ride, and the Battle of Lexington & Concord; and finally 4 years before Thomas Paine’s Common Sense is published, the signing of the Declaration of Independence (which is printed and shared across the colonies), Nathan Hale’s execution for treason against the Crown, and Washington’s Crossing of the Delaware.
25 years later lithography is developed in 1796; the year prior Napoleon overthrows le Directoire.
40 years later we have chromolithography in 1837, the year Victoria ascends and the first electric/battery powered locomotive is invented.
5 years later is the rotary press in 1843. The First Industrial Revolution is over.
15 years later is the hectograph in 1860. 1 year later, the American Civil War begins.
15 years later is offset printing in 1875. 1 year before, the first commercial typewriter becomes available. 1 year later is Bell and Watson’s first phone call in 1876.
10 years later is hotmetal typing in 1884.
1 year later is the mimeograph in 1885. 2 years later is Black Monday. 5-10 years later the radio is invented.
20 years later is the photostat and rectigraph in 1907.
4 years later is screen printing in 1911. 3 years later WWI begins in 1914.
10 years later is the spirit duplicator in 1923. The Roaring Twenties.
2 years later is dot matrix printing in 1925. 4 years later is the Great Crash.
10 years later is xerography in 1938, the same year as the first digital computer. 1 year later WWII begins in 1939.
2 years later is spark printing in 1940. 1 year later is the Attack on Pearl Harbor.
9 years later is phototypesetting in 1949. The USSR detonates their first atomic bomb.
1 year later is inkjet printing in 1950. Truman orders the development of the hydrogen bomb. Apartheid becomes law in South Africa.
7 years later is dye-sublimation in 1957. 6 years later, Martin Luther King, Jr. gives his “I Have a Dream” Speech.
12 years later is laser printing in 1969, the summer of which is known for very Very.
3 years later is thermal printing in 1972. The break-in at the Watergate Office Building is this same year and 2 years later Nixon resigns.
14 years later is 3D printing in 1986, the year Pixar Animation is founded and the year after the beginning of the Iran-Contra Affair.
1 year later is solid ink printing in 1987. 2 years later is the invention of the World Wide Web, and the internet as we know it.
4 years later is digital printing in 1991, the same year the USSR dissolved. 2 years before, the Berlin Wall fell.
There have been no significant developments in the history of printing since 1991.
So, let’s look at some averages to help us consume this data. Printing has a history of 5,520 years. It took 3,700 years for another development to occur, and then another 700 years after that - in other words, in the first 4,400 years of printing, there were 3 developments, equalling to an average of 1 every 1,470 years. In the 400 years between 1440 and 1843,  there were 7 developments (average of 1 every 57 years). In the next 100 years between 1860 and 1957, there were 14 developments (average of 1 every 7 years but with 1 year having 2 developments simultaneously). In the next 22 years between 1969 and 1991, there were 5 developments (average of 1 every 4 years).
While the general trend is that the more a technology develops, the faster it develops, a trend is not the whole picture. Consider: in the 90 years of 1796-1885, there were 6 developments, making the average 1 every 15 years. In the 85 years of 1907-1991, there were 15 developments, making the average 1 every 6 years. There has not been a development in the past 30 years! There hasn’t been this large of a gap since 1837, 180 years ago.
In general, without numbers, what I think we can see here is that sometimes a certain development, like the printing press, can usher in a new era, and sometimes reactions to what else is happening in the world can pressure someone into developing something new, but often times, most times, when you look at just one thing under microscope over time, why that thing is produced in this era but not that era has nothing to do with the eras in question. When we create time periods, we’re generally doing it after the fact. No one living under the rule of the Roman Empire in 100 CE was thinking to themselves, “ah yes, the Pax Romana, when we have peace for 200 years!”
So applying all of this to worldbuilding, I see two methods that you can use together, to create a timeline that makes sense and is useful to your storytelling.
Method the first, arbitrarily create time bubbles of various lengths - I recommend the use of index cards for this. Index card A is 7 years; card B is 150 years; card C is 47 years and so on. Then take big ideas and put those onto your cards; use inspiration from real history. “I want the War of the Roses but condensed into 7 years.” “A Mongolian Empire type expansion happens over 150 years.” “There’s a 47 year Renaissance of fascination with Ancient History.” Then take those cards, lay them out into roughly the order in which you want them to occur, maybe overlap them a little, especially if they are happening in different parts of your world. Remember that time is not actually linear and things do not happen in a linear, narrative manner in the real world, so there can be wild leaps; there can be regressions; and you don’t have to follow real world history here - though you may want to the first time as a helpful exercise. It’s also very unlikely that you will ever have to know exactly how many years are between the eras or what the interstitial eras are.
Method the second, list all the major historical events, inventions, etc that you want/need to have happened. Start with what directly impacts your main characters and plot. “MC’s great-grandfather is humiliatingly defeated in battle, casting a pall of embarrassment across the generations following and ultimately putting the MC in the position that she starts in.” “The first great wizard codifies the 10 Laws of the Important Magical Order that the MC is trying to earn her place in.” Put these in an order that makes sense to you, keeping in mind that it’s not going to be a perfect progression. Again, you don’t need to know how many years there are between each event, but if great-grandpa was the last in a very long line of family members allowed to be in the Important Magical Order, then that IMO had to be founded first, and there would probably be some events between these two.
Then, when you have your two timelines, one of era/time periods and one of events, graft them together. You may have to shift some things to make it work, but consider the “feeling” or theme of the eras and what events make sense in relation to those feelings. Additionally would this event be more suited to happening when the era is new and is finding itself or when the era is solidly on course or is it an event that would completely shatter the illusion of the era and usher in a new one? Does it make sense for your great wizard to be codifying her laws in the expansion of an empire, or during a period of relative peace and prosperity in an established empire, or before empires were a thing in this world and few traveled far from home?
Tex: I’ve found that historically important events are caused for roughly two reasons - one, an invention that others capitalize on for an exponential growth into other inventions/social uses, and two, someone got sick of someone else’s crap and did something about it. Natural disasters will happen with enough frequency to be noted (see: the Little Ice Age, the Black Death, and the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa), although there’s little prediction for them because of the lack of observable build up in activity.
To pull from Feral’s timeline of examples, writing is popularly attributed to being invented in Sumer, 5,520 years ago - it’s our oldest found example, at any rate, though I’ve learned to never say never on archaeological discoveries.
What prompted this invention? Things rarely occur out of the blue, and rarely without interaction from other domains - where could writing have come from? Maybe art? What about from the creation of a tool, a reuse of certain skill sets? Something else we haven’t thought of yet?
So that’s one half of the question. But what about the other half - what did people around the inventor (multiple inventors?) think of this new thing? Deliberately associating a particular sound with a particular object - even a 2D object like pressing shapes into a piece of clay - and then standardizing it, is no mean feat. How did this agreement even happen? Were there arguments about how to do these graphemes, how best to shape them? What about which phoneme to each?
I doubt Sumerian cuneiform was created in a day, and likewise I doubt that language popped into existence on a whim. To keep pulling from this example, language composition has a strong effect on how we interact with our environment (University of Missouri-St Louis Libraries), but it conversely is also deeply affected by the environment its users create (Nature).
Because of this, I think it’s easier to work from a different angle - figure out what your major events are, and what eras you’re covering. If these major events also define an era, that’s even better! Working out how long everything each thing takes is ultimately a bunch of minor details, so it’s up to you how much your plot actively needs them, rather than decoration to your story meant to amuse you more than your audience.

I'm a bit confused by this AU, and the link to read it Chronologically doesn't work. Could you kinda explain/summarize what's going on please?
Ah, pardon the chronological link not working! I suppose mobile does not take kindly to what I have set up. One fix I have found is to pull the blog up on a mobile browser and then click the chronological link. I believe Chrome is the default for most phones?
If that does not work, I have a summary of the current plot below. (For newcomers, this is rife with Spoilers, but will not contain every event in this story (or be 100% accurate due to me not double-checking) so it does not drag on for too long!! Do consider the above solution before looking here.)
- The Crimson Curse is an ailment that causes a desire for the blood and meat of another human. I.E. it causes the afflicted to want to commit cannibalism. - A cursed individual cannot drink or eat from another cursed, lest they get sick from it. - Avoiding/suppressing these urges only causes the cursed in question to begin to 'lose themself' and become more bug-like. Mosquito is the most common, but other insects and arachnids are applicable.
- Mint Choco happened to eat his assistant, Oreo Cheesecake (an OC), and fled to a Mansion that just so happened to belong to Roguefort. - Roguefort took him in, met Vampire (who flirts with him), and Aloe (who tried to kill him in the middle of the night). - Mint gets a premonition about this person named Sparkling, and follows it the next morning by 'escaping' the mansion during a group hunt. - Mint gets attacked by Lemon, one of three hunters, but is helped by Vampire- the two of them then go to Sparkling's bar. - Turns out Sparkling is related to Roguefort, disagreed with them, and defected from the manor. He, Vampire, and Mint all enjoy a round of blood-infused juice. (Though Mint does learn that those that get cursed also grow wings and it's incredibly painful.) - Vampire brings Mint home after some drinking, reminiscing over his dead sister- which died terribly at the hands of Roguefort and some horrific blood-sucking creatures. - Alchemist back then was fed to the manor despite being cursed and caused most of the manor to have a distaste for the bat. - Vampire gets scolded and later beaten up by Roguefort, and Mint is left to rest peacefully in his room.
- Mint, after waking back up, finds and follows Aloe to the basement. - Turns out Aloe has a little area in the cold, stony underside of the mansion that contains Co- a dear friend of Aloe's that is incredibly weak and on life support. - There also happens to be another person named Caramel (otherwise known as Hero) who's been trapped down here for who knows how long. Mint promises to help him out, but then his wings grow in and leave him incapacitated for some time. - Aloe has a conflict of needing electrical power to keep Co alive, so they leave the mansion for just a moment to attack and kidnap Lemon, biting him and sucking out his blood often to keep him sedated. - Mint eventually gets Aloe to let Lemon go, pick up Co and save Caramel, and book it out of the manor. - However, since Lemon and Co are attached to each other during the escape and Roguefort attempts to catch the group- he throws Co in order to save the rest of the group- effectively killing Co. - Aloe is understandably upset over this, attempts to kill Lemon for it once everyone is out, but Caramel knocks them out.
- In search of a place to stay, Mint recommends Sparkling's bar, to which the three head to (and find a piece of bread on the pavement on the way there). - Turns out Oreo Cheesecake is still alive and living with Sparkling. There's tension between Oreo and Mint, though that eventually gets resolved with Oreo taking care of Mint just as he did before all of this occurred. - Lemon and Caramel say their goodbyes the next morning, thanking the two, then Aloe and Mint depart soon after for some sandwich shop that serves cursed individuals in secret. - The two make it to the shop, order, and see that Sandwich has a doll of sorts that seems to be partly alive. This gives Aloe new hope that Co can come back. - After some shock and horror of checking the kitchen of the shop, they realize that Sandwich is also a cursed person, and accidentally befriend her. Sammy gives the two their bloody food, then Aloe and Mint have a moment of bonding. - At some point, Aloe asks Sandwich about the doll, Spinny/Spinach, and inquires about attempting to bring a friend back as well. Turns out it's because of someone named Truffle, that she coincidentally has an order that she needs to send to her manor. - Aloe agrees to take the food to Truffle so that they may have a chance of seeing Co again, bringing Mint along with them since the two are kinda stuck with each other.
- At the manor, the food gets stolen by some bolting fast figure, but Truffle doesn't seem to mind. - Aloe goes through agony and has a reunion with Co, eventually getting a doll made of them. - Mint and Truffle (and eventually Aloe) have a discussion about how to get rid of the curse, and Truffle kinda tries to place Mint in a prophetic hero situation. - In the night, Mint wakes up to the sound of Lemon screaming outside the manor. Turns out he has wings now and is cursed. Whoops! - Beet, the second of three hunters, finds Lemon and starts grilling him about this happening after something happened to Carrot, being aggressive and not hesitating to kill him. - Mint bolts outside of the manor, bumping into Truffle and then being guided by her, to stop Beet from harming Lemon. - Mint gets shot in a non-vital area, Beet gets bitten and wrapped up by spiders (that of which is a giant mound known to be Onion), and Lemon gets treated.
- Lemon, Aloe, and Mint all then decided to depart back for Roguefort's mansion since killing the source will disperse the curse and save lives yadda yadda Hero Type Beat. - The crew is told to cut through farmland, and Lemon knows who works there, reluctantly offering to lead the way. - Turns out Carrot, the third hunter, works those fields. - Lemon orders the crew to hide, and tells them that he'll take care of Carrot, since he knows her.
And that's all I have for now!! At least until this month's update!! Again, be sure to read the full story if you can!! It's over 2 years in the making, after all.

I think I saw “MoriJoanLock” going around, but I honestly hate most portmanteau ship names so I’m just going to go with “Sherlock x Jamie x Joan” x)
Thank you for your ask, @almostshadydelusion :D Sorry it took so long to answer. With the finale so close, I had trouble focussing on anything else.
Also for some reason my brain is unable to do short so as with the previous ask, since it got a bit too long to avoid the cut, I’m putting this in a text post and tagging you to make sure you see it. Hopefully you don’t mind the 8k words (D:) of elaborate headcanons and fic plots lol.
who’s the werewolf and who’s the hunter
I actually really liked your version so I’m not sure I’m ever going to top that. x)
Okay so how about... I’m gonna go with a world in which werewolves are less tied to the cycles of the moon and more like shapeshifters. They can control when they transform, it’s just that when it’s the full moon they have no choice to be in wolf form. No matter whether they’re in wolf or human form though, they always keep their human mind, they don’t become berserk at all, but of course their wolf bite is still extremely dangerous and infects whoever they bite whether it’s the full moon or not. Because of that, werewolves and humans live separately, and anyone who crosses over the territory borders is either killed on sight in human territory or bitten and forced to join a clan in werewolf territory.
So with those rules in place...
Jamie grows up in a werewolf clan in the forest near the borders of human settlement, and she’s endlessly fascinated by the way humans live so she keeps sneaking out of the forest to spy on humans. When she’s around 12, she meets Sherlock, a human boy of 15 who similarly is endlessly fascinated by werewolves. They’re a perfect match, often sneak out to meet each other in secret, and together they form the childish dream to change society so that humans and werewolves stop hating each other. As they grow up, they even start making plans for it because Sherlock comes from an influential human family and Jamie’s talents make her next in line for leadership in her clan. Eventually they fall in love and start a secret relationship, which only makes them more eager to change society because now they have the added motivation of wanting to be together.
But shortly after Sherlock turns 18, Mycroft catches him and Jamie kissing and reports Sherlock’s illegal meetings to Morland, who of course won’t abide one of his sons spending time with werewolves. Sherlock is sent away to hunter school and told he’ll never see his werewolf girlfriend again. He refuses to move on or study werewolf hunting even though he’s not allowed to leave, but then six months later, Morland tell him Jamie was caught by other werewolves trying to sneak into the city and subsequently killed by her own clan. At first Sherlock refuses to believe it, but then Morland sends him a necklace he gave to Jamie years ago, one he knows she would never remove if she had a choice. She must be dead. Sherlock is heartbroken and slips into deep depression.
Enters Joan Watson, who also goes to hunter school, and whose mother was bitten by wandering werewolves and forced away from the city. She refuses to let Sherlock slide into despair, and does her best to hold him together, being the friend he needs when he most needs one. Sherlock ends up telling her a little about Jamie, their relationship and how they were separated, but never reveals she was a werewolf.
Years pass, Sherlock and Joan slowly fall in love, tentatively start a relationship. Sherlock is 21 when he graduates and gets a hunter license, and he’s determined to hunt down the werewolves who killed Jamie – a goal Joan is very supportive of, even if it shows attachment to a dead girlfriend, because she herself wants revenge for her mother. It’s not all that clean-cut though, because Sherlock doesn’t want to kill all werewolves, just the ones responsible for taking Jamie away from him, while Joan is hell-bent on hating every last one of them. So they never really talk about that because it’s kind of a sore point, but that’s okay because they have a lot of other things to talk about anyway (or not talk when their mouths are busy doing other things).
Meanwhile Jamie, of course, isn’t dead at all. But she was caught by her clan trying to sneak into human settlement to find Sherlock, stripped of her collection of human things (including the necklace) and, similarly to Sherlock, was sent away from the border. The werewolves say she needs to be taught anti-humans rhetoric and leadership skills because she’s been hailed as one of the most promising future leaders since she was a child, but she won’t be allowed to become head of the clan unless she has the proper attitude. Jamie knows it’s useless fighting heads on when she’s on her own against a whole clan, so instead she agrees to go through the training and schemes on her own so that when she’s finally leading her own clan, nobody will be able to stop her from doing whatever the hell she wants (which amongst other things includes finding a way to be with Sherlock).
Three years after being separated, Sherlock starts patrolling the borders with Joan, both of them fully fledged hunters now and both very intent on getting revenge for their loved ones. Jamie is still too young to head a clan, but she’s given more and more responsibilities, and one day when word gets out that two very aggressive hunters keep patrolling the borders Jamie is given the task to scare them away.
Once she gets there though she quickly recognises Sherlock of course, so she throws caution to the wind and runs to him – except Joan, who doesn’t know who the hell this girl is, only sees a werewolf running towards them and thinks Jamie is about to attack. So she attacks first, shoots a silver arrow with a crossbow that barely misses Jamie. Jamie naturally falls into fight mode, attacks Joan while Sherlock is going through all the stages of shock and grief because holy shit Jamie is alive.
When Sherlock finally realises he needs to do something, his current girlfriend is about to be killed by his ex-girlfriend. He yells at Jamie to stop minutes before she kills Joan, and Jamie reluctantly does but requests that Joan goes away. Joan of course refuses to leave her boyfriend alone with a werewolf, and Jamie is all sorts of betrayed by the fact Sherlock moved on from her (because from her point of view Sherlock abandoned her first and then went on to cheat on her with a human). So in a reaction of anger she transforms into her werewolf form and almost bites Joan, until Sherlock jumps in between them and Jamie ends up biting Sherlock instead.
Joan threatens Jamie with her crossbow and forces her to run away, then rushes Sherlock to the nearest hospital, but there’s nothing they can do to stop him from being infected. Sherlock has until the next full moon to put his affairs in order and leave the human world behind, because from the moment of his first transformation, he’ll become contagious to other humans and killed on sight if he stays on the wrong side of the border. Joan is in a state of distress because she’s about to lose Sherlock the same way she lost her mother, but when Sherlock finally admits that the only reason becoming a werewolf bothers him is because it means he’ll lose Joan (becoming a werewolf himself and/or leaving human civilisation doesn’t bother him), she finally starts asking questions she should have asked years ago, starting with why is Sherlock so fascinated by werewolves and why doesn’t he believe they’re as dangerous as they’re made to be.
Sherlock answers her questions and tells her, amongst other things, that werewolves aren’t so different from humans, that it’s just like another culture built around exile and the stigma of an infectious condition. And Joan realises that, beyond the lust for vengeance because of what happened to her mother, the real reason she wants to eliminate werewolves is because she wants humans to stop living in fear of the next time one of their loved ones will be taken from them. She wants to make a difference and change the world for the better, and she’s starting to think maybe there are other ways to do that. When Sherlock shares the dream he and Jamie once had, Joan (reluctantly at first, but as time passes more and more enthusiastically) agrees that since Sherlock will be a werewolf from now on, she could work on the human side to try and change minds.
Neither Sherlock nor Joan were ever any good at following the rules, so once comes the time to part ways, they promise to come back see each other once a month, on the night of the new moon (when the werewolves are the least active and most likely to sleep through the night). The moment Sherlock leaves, Joan goes back to the human side, finds Morland, and tells him in no uncertain terms that if he ever cared about Sherlock at all, he’ll help her now change minds about werewolves because it’s 100% his fault Sherlock was bitten in the first place (considering he’s the ones who lied about Jamie being dead, and how that precipitated the next events). Joan is a force to be reckoned with, and Morland respects that. He doesn’t agree with her goal, but he admires Joan’s mettle and agrees to lend her his influence so that she can have enough standing to be heard. The job of changing minds will be her own.
Meanwhile Sherlock crosses over to werewolf territory and meets with Jamie again, who is extremely remorseful. Of course it’s Jamie so she won’t just become Sherlock’s carpet because she regrets biting him, but she tells him she understands if he’s angry with her and would rather she keeps her distances from now on, and she apologises. Sherlock, who was upset to leave Joan behind but never really angry to become a werewolf in the first place, tells her that on the contrary, he would rather have her close because he missed her, but that she owes him a debt for what she did. That makes Jamie a bit defensive at first, but when Sherlock explains that the way to repay that debt is to join him with Joan and work towards the goal they dreamed about when they were kids, Jamie agrees even if she doesn’t exactly like Joan’s inclusion (because she’s territorial about things, including people, that are hers lol but she’s logical enough to know without a human liaison, it won’t do any good even if they do change the werewolves’ mind).
The trio starts meeting every month to discuss their progress. Joan is slowly gaining traction in the human council, especially now that she gets more direct help from Mycroft (who misses his brother and now regrets telling on him), and Jamie is quickly rising up the ranks in her clan. Jamie and Joan at first hate each other and only work together reluctantly, but as time passes, they gain huge respect for each other because they’re both leaders, and from there a friendship develops, then attraction that grows despite how hard they fight against it. Sherlock meanwhile struggles with his feelings for both of them, because he still loves Joan and they never officially broke up, but he was in love with Jamie first and never stopped, and now Joan is away and Jamie is right there in his face all the time. He has a good self-control and their cause is bigger than themselves so he holds back, but he struggles and unbeknown to him, Joan and Jamie both struggle with a similar situation.
Tension between them finally explodes on the day Joan has her first big win with the human council and gets tasked with writing the first peace treaty between humans and werewolves. When she hears the news, Jamie impulsively grabs Joan and kisses the hell out of her. She didn’t expect Joan to answer in kind, but then they stop thinking and they’re soon making out in front of poor Sherlock who’s doing his best impression of a goldfish. After that, of course, they really need to talk about this because now Sherlock is the one feeling hurt and possessive, even though he isn’t sure which one of them he’s possessive of. After a good talk where they finally manage to be honest with themselves and each other, they come to the natural conclusion that all three belong together. And when the peace treaty is signed and both communities are allowed to interact without repercussions, they can finally move in together and make it so. (And Joan, of course, is overjoyed when she’s finally allowed to be reunited with her werewolf mother.)
who’s the mermaid and who’s the fisherman
Joan and Jamie are fishermen wives (as in they’re both sailors and married to each other) who often go on long sailing trips in the middle of the ocean. Joan is extremely rational while Jamie is prone to dramatic flights of fancy, so after a few years of being married, Joan stops reacting whenever Jamie starts yelling stuff about mythical things like krakens and selkies because they always turn out to be stuff like tiny jellyfishes and absolutely normal seals.
Sherlock, on the other hand, is an impish merman who likes to play tricks on sailors. He finds Joan’s and Jamie’s boat one day, and Jamie is the one to spot him, but of course when she starts yelling that there’s a merman in the ocean, Joan just rolls her eyes. So Jamie starts on a quest to prove to Joan that Sherlock exists, while Sherlock is delighted by the challenge because usually sailors just freak out once they see him.
It goes on for a while, Jamie playing coyote to Sherlock’s roadrunner, until Jamie finally manages to trap Sherlock and Joan has a freak out and forces Jamie to release him. Sherlock, intrigued, decides to come back and actually talk to them this time instead of just teasing and running around, because he always expected humans to try and kill him if he was ever caught instead of scratching him under the chin and letting him go.
Of course, that’s made a little hard because Sherlock doesn’t actually speaks or understand human language, and neither Joan nor Jamie understand Mermish. So Jamie takes on the challenge of trying to learn how to speak Mermish, and Joan takes on the challenge of trying to teach Sherlock how to speak English. Unfortunately, while Sherlock ends up understanding a bit of English, he doesn’t have the proper anatomy to speak human languages and while Jamie tries very hard to catch the nuances of Mermish language, she doesn’t have the ability to reproduce it vocally.
For a few days they despair of ever being able to communicate with each other, but then Jamie remembers that Sign Language is a thing (and it’s even a thing that she once learned, years ago), so the next time they go back to land she picks up her books about sign language, dusts off her knowledge of the language, and sets up to teach both Sherlock and Joan how to speak with their hands. As time passes and they manage to communicate at last, Sherlock falls in love with both Jamie and Joan, and they fall in love with him as well. They never really talk about that though, or rather they do admit at some point that they love each other but they refuse to act on it because the difference in species makes it a bit awkward on both sides.
Then Sherlock decides he wants to be human and join Jamie and Joan’s world because he loves them and wants to be able be with them properly, so he goes to see a Sea Witch. The price to pay for being human is heavy, and if you saw The Little Mermaid you already know what it is: Sherlock loses his voice forever and has to get both Joan and Jamie to kiss him before three days pass, otherwise he’ll become the Sea Witch’s slave algae.
Thankfully, Sherlock has the advantage of Sign Language that Ariel didn’t, so once he becomes human and manages to swim to Jamie’s and Joan’s ship, explaining the situation only takes a few minutes. The women of course agree to kiss him to break his curse (Joan perhaps a little more reluctantly, not because she loves him less but because this whole thing is making her head spin and she doesn’t deal well when her rational notions of the world are challenged in this way), and from that moment on they live happily ever after and I can’t believe I wrote that kind of fluff urgh someone please kill me XD
who’s the witch and who’s the familiar
Joan is the witch! As a child she’s very gifted and precocious, starts magical training earlier than her peers and wins several magical awards while she completes her schooling.
But that level of talent comes with its challenges, and when she does the familiar calling ceremony, instead of your regular pet or wild animal, she inadvertently attracts Geminis, a very particular species of supernatural familiars that are shapeshifters and always come in twos: Sherlock and Jamie, the trouble-making pair of the Gemini world.
It takes twice as much strength to tame two familiars, and to top the difficulty, those two aren’t exactly the easiest bunch to get along with because they didn’t exactly plan to settle down with a witch so early (they enjoyed the freedom of being able to roam the planes of existence together, where time doesn’t have any meaning, but now they cannot do that anymore since they have to be able to answer to Joan’s callings). But with effort, communication, and a lot of patience, they learn to respect each other’s needs and to work together, and along the way end up forming deep bonds of attachment to each other.
who’s the barista and who’s the coffee addict
Okay so this one I’ve actually held in my writing folders for almost a year now and will absolutely write it one day if I ever clear up my plate.
Set in season 1. Joan just became Sherlock’s protégée and he’s sending her all over the city on random errands, allegedly so that she can learn more about the city’s travel routes (no matter that she’s a New York City native and already knows most of that stuff). One day as she got to an antique store early and needs to wait a few more minutes before she can pick up Sherlock’s package, she decides to head to the nearest coffee shop and treat herself while she waits.
The coffee shop is utterly pleasant and fancy, lots of wide open spaces, lots of tall windows, an area with tables and another with sofas, and in the corner with the best light, there’s an easel with an unfinished portrait. Something about the character on the canvas seems familiar somehow, but since it’s basically just a vague silhouette with eyes right now, she shrugs the impression off.
While the barista is taking Joan’s order, Jamie walks in the coffee shop (which she owns) and gets the shock of her life seeing Joan there. She could quickly disappear before Joan sees her of course, but she’s curious and no matter what happens, she’s confident she’s still the most dangerous person in the room so why not play? So instead of running away, she comes in and takes over the job of her employee, makes Joan’s coffee, introduces herself as “Jamie” but doesn’t give any last name, and subtly appraises her in a playful manner.
Jamie’s “playful” is unfortunately a little off by society’s standards, so it comes off as overly familiar and slightly flirty. Joan is very flustered but also fairly flattered by this beautiful lady’s interest, and since she has a bit of time left and the coffee is amazing, she stays around to chat a bit longer. When she finally has to leave, she promises herself to return as soon as possible.
Time passes. Joan comes back to see Jamie at the coffee shop regularly, and the more she does the more Jamie is baffled because she cannot for the life of her figure the woman out but she’s starting to look forward to her visits solely to be baffled some more. She keeps working on her portrait in the corner of the coffee shop, but on a whim starts adding another character. (It was initially meant to be a stylised painting of Sherlock, but now it’s becoming a painting of Sherlock and Joan, it’s just not yet detailed enough that Joan can realise what it is.) (And to be fair, Joan is too distracted by the pretty artist-dash-coffee shop owner there to really pay attention to what she’s working on.)
On the other hand, Joan’s and Sherlock’s relationship progresses at the same pace as it does in the show, they learn to trust and rely on each other, form a strong emotional bond, things are going well over there. Until one day Joan gets called to a crime scene while she’s chatting with Jamie, and she decides to bring Sherlock a cup of coffee. Jamie slips up and prepares the coffee to Sherlock’s preferences, which she learned while they were in London, and Sherlock gets the shock of his life when he takes the first sip because very few people aside from himself manage to prepare a coffee that’s perfect for his taste.
Sherlock immediately starts asking questions about the coffee shop, initially out of enthusiasm because wow damn if they make coffee that good he really needs to visit, but soon enough out of desperate, burning curiosity because this “Jamie” Joan is talking about sounds a lot like Irene, and he doesn’t want to get his hopes up but he’s confused and desperate and he doesn’t understand how that could be possible but what if she was still alive?
So Sherlock and Joan run back to the coffee shop, and by this point the story can take two different roads and I’m not sure which one I like best.
Option 1: Jamie realised she slipped up and disappears before Sherlock and Joan come back, leaving behind a smug message along the lines of “of course this was all very deliberate and now, gotcha! hahaha haha ha” (think, like, same energy as the scene in the media room with Sherlock lol). She keeps doing her work as Moriarty but things get murky because she’s attached to Joan as well as Sherlock now, and while she’s desperate to regain control of her own life and reassert her dominance over them, there’s a line she’s unwilling to cross when it comes to people she has developed feelings for (by the sheer fact that she doesn’t have them for many people in the first place). Meanwhile Sherlock and Joan are confused and hurting and everything is a mess.
Option 2: Jamie doesn’t realise she slipped up and when Sherlock and Joan come rushing in, she’s trapped in a predicament because of course Sherlock recognises her straight away, but she cannot fake PTSD and mental confusion this time because Joan has known her stable and well-balanced for months now. So she gets out of it by faking amnesia, tells them she woke up in a hospital a little under two years ago with no memory of her previous life, just strange dreams sometimes and my, what’s your name again, Sherlock is it? You feel familiar somehow, did we know each other? Following this Jamie does her best to explain stuff away (how she “inherited” the coffee shop from a “strange man” who was by her bedside when she woke up, how she figured out she could paint when she saw someone doing a sketch in a park, etc.) and keep the gig up, but everybody’s emotions are roiling in all directions and again, a mess.
It’s probably not a story that ends well, but who knows? We’ll see if I ever get around to writing it. =)
who’s the professor and who’s the TA
Normally I’d go with Jamie as the professor because ACD!Moriarty was one, but in Elementary Sherlock is the one who has a teacher vibe, you know? So it kinda makes me want to explore a universe with Sherlock as the professor who has a stellar reputation because his academic research is groundbreaking, and Joan and Jamie as two ambitious and rival students who apply for the position of teaching assistant.
Both of them are extremely talented in their own way, and Sherlock is a bit of a big softy so he hires both of them because he’s unable to decide which one is more “deserving”. Joan and Jamie fully expected to have to keep fighting against each other while working for him but they quickly realise TA work isn’t exactly what they thought it would be when they discover Sherlock is A Mess in... I was going to say “in his personal life” but really it’s more like in every area of his life that isn’t directly related to work. He barely sleeps and when he does it’s curled up on a chair in his office, forgets to eat when he’s working, never cleans his office, he’s the only one who understands his filing system, etc. Turns out the two girls have to put their rivalry aside just to be able to get this train wreck back on track because Sherlock dropped tea all over the answers for the next test and now it’s unreadable, he has no idea where he mislaid Jamie’s computer last time he borrowed it (it’s probably somewhere on his desk but that’s almost a landfill by this point), and why is Joan yelling at him now? Oh yes, the mould in the jar on the bookshelf, yes that’s supposed to be there, don’t touch it please it’s toxic and could kill them all.
Neither Joan nor Jamie are willing to take that kind of crap for long. But they really need the teaching and the credentials, and also Sherlock is kind of adorable when he gets excited about something so they don’t want to just quit either, and they’re unable to hold a grudge for long ‘cause jeez, he’s cute and damn, he’s an amazing teacher when he’s actually teaching them. So they all learn to make it work, Jamie and Joan never let Sherlock get away with his crap, Sherlock learns to appreciate that and get his life a little more together (at least enough to stop antagonising everybody else), and somehow along the way they all develop feelings for everyone involved. By the time Joan and Jamie are ready to graduate, their three lives are all so tied together that the idea of parting ways with any of them is unbearable. So they don’t, and they stay, and they make it work somehow.
who’s the knight and who’s the prince(ss)
As I said in my previous ask, all iterations of Sherlock are always the princess, so we’re going to start with that. x)
So! Prince(ss) Sherlock grows up with Joan as his best friend. Joan is born from common folks, but her friendship with Sherlock allows her to follow her interest in becoming a knight, and she’s so good at it that Sherlock hires her to be his bodyguard and constant companion. The two of them have a very close bond and everybody expects them to become a romantic couple, but Sherlock is on the asexual spectrum so he only very rarely experiences sexual attraction (and doesn’t for Joan so far), and Joan is aromantic and while she enjoys sex, she isn’t interested in a romantic relationship at all. So while they do get very close and definitely love each other, their bond isn’t so easily defined by conventional terms. They decide after a few years that they should marry anyway, because nobody else will ever understand what they want from life, they don’t want to be parted from each other, and people are starting to talk. They figure they’ll adopt heirs when the time comes and live their life the way they want in the meantime.
However, the day just before the wedding, a dragon swoops in from the sky and kidnaps Sherlock, which leads Joan to laugh a little despite her worry because as it turns out, when he was young, Sherlock spent all his time saying that since he was royalty, it was inevitable that a dragon at some point would try to get him. She’s still not going to let that dragon get away with her fiancé though, so she packs up gears, takes a horse, and starts going after them.
Meanwhile Sherlock expected to be threatened or put in a dark cave and forgotten for days on ends, but instead he’s brought to a tower filled to the brim with more books than he could read in a lifetime. The dragon is a bit grouchy and tells him to get comfortable, very sorry but if you have to blame someone blame your father Morland who refused to pay a debt, and please don’t scream, my ears are sensitive. What? No I have no intention of eating you, what the hell are you talking about? You humans, pff. Even if I ate meat, I bet you wouldn’t taste any good with all the crap your species consume.
Sherlock is a curious prince(ss) and confident that Joan will come and save him at some point, so in the meantime why not follow the dragon’s advice and get some more knowledge into him. After a few hours of reading he starts asking questions.
“I thought dragons ate meat, how come you don’t?” “What do they teach you in human school? Dragons never ate meat. We’re vegetarians. Meat. Pah!” “How long am I expected to stay here?” “Until your father pays his debt. It shouldn’t take too long. He has incentive now.” “... you mean me? You expect him to pay to get me back?” “Of course.” “... I think you were mislead as to what kind of relationship we have.” “Aren’t you family?” “You know, this may be the only moment in history where ‘not all [families]’ is a valid argument?”
*dragon grumbles and snorts a bit of fire*
“So uh, what’s your name?” “[unintelligible screech]” “Please tell me? Since we’re going to spend a lot of time together, we should at least be properly introduced.” “That was my name.” “... oh. I’m never going to be able to repeat that. Would you mind if I gave you another one then?” *dragon snorts* “How about... James? You look like a James. Wait, are you a male? I can’t really tell from here.” “Dragons do not have human genders.” “Ah! My apologies. Hmm. Jamie then. It’s gender-neutral, and it’s cute. Fits you. :)”
Jamie the dragon goes back to grumbling, Sherlock goes back to reading, then Jamie brings some food to Sherlock (surprisingly good, even though it’s nothing like he ever ate at home), Sherlock asks more questions but this time about the subjects in the books he read, Jamie is a hoarder of knowledge rather than gold so she’s eager to answer and discuss, and as the days pass those two realise they’re actually enjoying each other’s company a whole damn lot.
Meanwhile Joan is on her way to the dragon’s tower. All the towns she passes through tell her that the dragon she’s looking for must be the new one they call Moriarty (because it came one day from over the sea) and that its tower is just a little bit further up the road. “Just a little bit further” turns out to be about three weeks away, and by the time she gets there, she’s starting to wonder if Sherlock is still alive.
Thankfully, the moment she steps inside the tower, she comes right in the middle of a fight between Sherlock and Jamie, who have taken to bickering over their knowledge of human culture (Sherlock never went anywhere but reads a lot of books, and Jamie went everywhere but their dragon perspective makes it so that most of what they see humans doing is incomprehensible to them).
“Uhm... Sherlock?” “Watson! Excellent timing. Can you please tell Jamie here that humans most certainly do not eat sand and dirt?” “I saw them mix it along with water and then heat it in a cooking pot. Are you going to tell me you don’t drink water next, or that food doesn’t come out of a pot?” “Sherlock.” “What you saw was probably people mixing mortar, you big cold blooded reptile!” “Mortar is solid and friable, you tiny hairless monkey! That thing they cooked was a liquid!” “A very thick liquid.” “FINE, A THICK LIQUID! THAT’S STILL NOT MORTAR!” “SHERLOCK!” “What?” “You were kidnapped?” “Was I? Oh yes, I was. Jamie, this is Joan Watson, my best friend and fiancée. Watson, this is Jamie, the most stubborn dragon I have ever met.” “I’m the only dragon you met, you idiot. But it’s nice to meet you, Joan. To what do we owe the pleasure of your company?”
Disasters, the both of them.
After sorting that situation out (and chewing Jamie out a little because who the hell kidnaps a prince(ss) on the day before their wedding?! if anything Jamie owes them big time for the wasted wedding expenses lol), Watson disagrees that Morland won’t repay his debt in exchange for Sherlock, Sherlock is his child, he most certain will pay... at some point... probably not in a hurry though. But she does agree that there are better ways to make him spit whatever he owes Jamie, and they start making plans.
Eventually all three start on a journey to Morland’s castle (Jamie refuses to fly them there, too much pride to let humans climb on their back, so everybody walks) and get to know each other better on the way there. They find out Joan is great at giving directions and crap at following them, that Sherlock is happy to soak up all the attention and mental stimulation but doesn’t do well the moment he thinks he’s being ignored, and that Jamie grumbles and snarks against them non-stop, but becomes extremely protective the moment someone threaten Sherlock and/or Joan (who quickly come to realise Jamie sort of ‘adopted’ them, they’re Jamie’s humans now, nobody else is allowed to touch them).
Once they get there, Sherlock manages to convince Morland to pay up his due to Jamie (said due happens to be a whole roll of silver coil), but then Jamie takes one look at it, then one look at Sherlock and Joan, then starts grumbling that this is useless now. Sherlock and Joan are like what the hell are you talking about? Jamie explains that the silver coil was to decorate a nesting area and attract a mate but there’s no point now, although they refuse to say why. It takes a whole week (the time to go back to Mycroft’s castle where Sherlock and Joan live) and a lot of cajoling before Jamie admits that while they were travelling, Sherlock and Joan accidentally activated Jamie’s dragon mating bond (suddenly the reason why Jamie became so possessive along the way makes much more sense). So now it doesn’t matter whether or not they accept Jamie within their union or that they cannot even mate with each other to begin with, Jamie will be bonded to them anyway until they die (because dragons have longer life spans than humans so it’s a certainty that they’ll die before her), so if they can just go away now (so that Jamie can brood, rethink all of their life choices, and perhaps go harass cattle or burn a forest to amuse themselves) it would be grand, thanks.
Sherlock and Joan are a little taken aback, but when they discuss it together they realise neither of them really minds. They like Jamie, perhaps even more than just like them, even though the dragon’s default resting mode is “grumbling” and their default conversation mode is “bicker”, and Sherlock’s and Joan’s own union was already out of the norm anyway. It’s not like they were planning to have sex with each other in the first place so being a couple or a trio won’t make any difference, and to be honest they’d be really sad if Jamie left (although they’ll have to teach the dragon some manners because kidnapping prince(sse)s and harassing cattle for the fun of it really won’t do if Jamie wants to stay around).
And so Jamie stays, Sherlock and Joan get married, and everyone lives their best life.
(And then one day, an evil wizard who was threatening the kingdom (he goes by “Odin” of all things) lands a curse on Jamie, who barely manages to burn the wizard to a crisp before suddenly shrinking and losing their scales, and in just a few minutes, poof. No more Jamie-the-dragon, now stands in their place Jamie-the-human, who really isn’t happy to be all pink and squishy and wants their dragon body back ASAP, thank you very much. Sherlock and Joan, on the other hand, suddenly grab each other’s hands and go:
“Ho... ly... mother of... God...” “... don’t take the lord’s name in vain, Watson, at least not in front of the whole courtyard.” “JESUS, Sherlock!” “I know. I know.” “I -- I think I may have a thing for girls now?” “Jamie isn’t a girl.” ”I know, but.. sweet potato on a candlestick, that... of hers, and those...” ”... yeah.” ”Yeah.” “My dear Watson, I think what we have... is a thing for dragons.” “... no shit, Sherlock.”
Then they run to Jamie to reassure them that no no no, the squishy pink thing is fine, and of course we’ll look for ways to break the curse but in the meantime you’ll see it’s really not so bad and there are perks.
And that is how after years of being only the three of them, they finally start on the process of conceiving heirs.)
who’s the teacher and who’s the single parent
I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to write a romcom scenario with this prompt, so hopefully you’ll find this take entertaining anyway.
Sherlock and Joan meet in college (Joan for some reason earned a scholarship for the best medicine school in England so she went) when Sherlock is a first year sneaking into anatomy classes and Joan is about to complete her studies. They strike a friendship when Sherlock is the only one to agree to help Joan study (which involves prattling off information non-stop without taking a breath) since it means he’ll gain knowledge for himself out of it. Joan goes on to become a doctor, Sherlock drops out of college to become a detective, but they stay in touch even though they don’t live in the same country anymore.
When Joan accidentally kills a patient, Sherlock proposes she comes live with him in London for a while, take a break from everything in NYC and perhaps find a way to reinvent herself. Joan ends up helping on a few cases, they find a nice rhythm together, and become business partners (Joan makes Sherlock stop the drugs entirely before he becomes an addict, and then does her best to keep him mentally stimulated in healthier ways). As time goes on, they develop a relationship that would never be described as romantic by society, but fits the two of them just fine and fulfils their emotional needs of closeness to another.
Meanwhile Jamie is taught criminal mastermind tricks by her mentor but learns the hard way that perhaps this isn’t a career choice she wants to pursue for herself when said mentor is betrayed, caught by the police, sentenced to jail, and then gruesomely executed in prison by one of his rivals even though with his influence nobody should have been able to touch him. Deprived of an outlet for her abilities and ambition, her brain starts to devour itself the way Sherlock’s did in Elementary, and while she doesn’t turn to drugs (it’s a close thing though), she ends up making a string of very bad decisions. One of them leave her pregnant, and that’s the waking call. She decides it’s better she doesn’t keep the baby, but since she doesn’t have the kind of contacts she has in the show, her daughter Kayden ends up being adopted through social services. After that, she does everything she can to get her life together, goes back to university, easily earns all the degrees in mathematics and astronomy with the highest grades in the history of the university she goes to, and starts working on her own research projects while taking a pupil here and there. She becomes very well-known in academia circles, both for her incandescent intelligence and ruthless, almost cut-throat ambition.
A few years pass. Joan is starting to feel dissatisfied, like something is missing in her life. After a lot of soul-searching, she decides perhaps that missing thing is motherhood. But while Sherlock wouldn’t necessarily be adverse to the physical aspect of those things, he refuses to pass down his own genes, so Joan starts looking at adoption agencies and eventually she’s put on a waiting list.
Then suddenly they catch a case in which a couple was murdered, leaving a 7 years old Kayden behind as the sole witness, and as the case progresses Sherlock realises just how frightfully intelligent this girl is and bonds with her more quickly than he ever bonded with anyone. Once they solve the case he mourns the fact that Kayden will probably never be allowed to develop her skills while bouncing from one group home to another, at least not the way she would with a loving family, and Joan (who bonded with the kid as well) asks him on a whim if he thinks they should adopt her rather than a newborn baby. After careful consideration, they agree that it’s the best decision and start putting in the work, and the adoption process is finalised in very little time with the help of Sherlock’s connections and influence.
(I’m aware technically it makes them co-parenting partners rather than a single parent with a child, but let’s be real, we’re talking about an OT3 so having a couple rather than a single person here isn’t exactly getting in the way.)
With the adoption papers for the girl come more information about her life situation. They learn it’s not the first time this kid is adopted, which makes Sherlock unbearably curious (and perhaps a little worried) because this child thinks and reacts so much like himself that he starts wondering if it’s a coincidence: either the kid was his to begin with and one of his previous partners didn’t tell him she was pregnant, or there’s someone else like him somewhere in the world who had this child. So he starts digging into birth records, but the name on Kayden’s is Irene Adler, which is not a name he recognises (aka not one of his previous partners’). Problem is, it’s also not a name anyone recognises when he starts trying to find her, so he keeps hitting dead end after dead end, and is forced to come to the conclusion that if he really wants to find Kayden’s birth parents, he’ll have to bring out his A game.
Meanwhile, Kayden is starting to display an interest and aptitudes in astronomy, so Joan takes on herself to bring her to the planetarium. When that’s not enough, she brings her to the library and buys her books. The books quickly aren’t enough either, and after Kayden raids Sherlock’s personal library and reads everything she can find on space and stars and constellations (and especially after she’s shown to understand the content better than Joan herself), Joan starts tracking obscure and specialised publications. That’s when she brings home “Dynamics of an Asteroid” by Jamie Moriarty. This books stumps Kayden because it’s so advanced, which only makes her more eager to learn. Kayden quickly develops a childhood hero worship for this Professor Moriarty, and when one day Joan hears about Moriarty soon giving a lecture open to the public, she decides that it would make the perfect birthday gift for her new daughter.
So Joan, Sherlock, and Kayden go to Professor Moriarty’s lecture as a family outing, Kayden is ecstatic, but is very disappointed when she isn’t allowed by the organisers to ask her questions by the end of the lecture. Sherlock and Joan, who know that Kayden’s questions would probably be even more pointed and intelligent than any of the questions adults were allowed to ask, decide to try and locate Professor Moriarty so that their kid may have a chance to speak directly to her hero. Jamie though isn’t interested in any kid, no matter how much of a “genius” her parents say she is (she met too many parents pushing their pseudo-prodigies to take those words at face value), so it takes a few weeks plus Sherlock and Joan getting annoyed enough to ambush her at her office before Kayden finally meets Jamie face to face.
And then Kayden works her magic. Her knowledge and interest really is remarkable, not only because she’s a child but more importantly because she displays leaps of intuition and logic that even Jamie’s college-level students don’t. Sherlock is content to soak in the conversation as it becomes more technical, but Joan who cannot follow past a certain point starts seeing the physical similarities between Kayden and Jamie, and naturally comes to wonder whether they might be related. When they come home (after Jamie practically begs them to enrol Kayden in university despite her age), Joan shares her suspicions that Jamie might be Kayden’s mother with Sherlock, which leads Sherlock to want to run right back to Jamie’s office and ask her if she gave a baby for adoption 10 years back. Joan obviously manages to stop him from making an idiot of himself, and instead they come up with a plan to convince Jamie to tutor Kayden directly (first because they care about Kayden’s happiness, and second so that they can perhaps breach the subject and ask discreet questions eventually).
Jamie, when offered, hesitates for a while because she’s never really done well with children, but this one is exceptional so she ends up accepting, especially when Joan and Sherlock say they don’t intend to let Kayden enrol in uni before she’s at least 15. As time passes and they all get closer (all three of them share several eclectic interests outside of the ones that initially brought them together so it’s very easy to talk to each other even outside of things related to Kayden, and that’s something Jamie especially treasures because she hasn’t had many people to really talk with since her mentor died), Joan and Sherlock tentatively bring up the subject of Jamie perhaps being Kayden’s birth mother.
That almost breaks their deal right there. Jamie leaves in a rush and they don’t see her for a month.
But then Kayden shows up to Jamie’s office on her own, wondering why she missed all her lessons, and even though there isn’t a single maternal bone in Jamie’s body, she cannot help being moved by this. This little girl isn’t looking for a mother, she already has one and her name is Joan. What she is looking for is a teacher, and for some reason that privilege now belongs to Jamie.
And so things slowly go back to normal. (Of course, Sherlock performs an illegal DNA test anyway because he’s a nosy little shit, but when the results come back positive, he now knows to keep that to himself.) All three of them engage and challenge each other on so many levels, emotions grow everywhere but everybody repress them best they can, and Kayden acts as the mortar to bind them together. That is, until one evening they have drinks, Joan slips an arm around Jamie’s shoulder as they sit on the couch, and Jamie answers with a kiss that leaves Joan breathless. When the women remember where they are and realise what just happened (and it happened so naturally too), they both apologise profusely and Jamie is about to make a hasty retreat until Sherlock just goes “Or you could stay and, uhm, would you two mind if I joined in?” with a cute hopeful face, and so that becomes a thing.
who’s the writer and who’s the editor
I know usually Joan should be the writer, but she canonically did editing job for her father on the show so I kinda want to make her the editor? Maybe one who writes herself in her spare times.
So in this case I think I’d go with Jamie and Sherlock being rival novelists who are trying to get a contract for their books with Watson Mysteries, Joan’s publishing company. Problem is, they’re both so brilliant in their own right and yet so UTTERLY infuriating that Joan keeps putting off taking a decision, so Jamie and Sherlock decide to make it a competition. And with those two, “competition” is serious business so it quickly falls into the personal sphere, where it becomes a mess of tangled minds that eventually leads to a mess of tangled limbs between the sheets.
(Eventually Joan publishes them both of course, and they all feel a little silly about the amount of shenanigans they got into but since they never would have ended together otherwise, they quickly get over it.)
Hope this is what you were looking for! =)

THE MAKING OF PONG PRAI KUMARN (PONG PRAI KUMARN MAHA PHUUT)
Guru Monks from Thailand who made the best Pong Prai Kumarn are LP Tim of Wat Laharnrai, Rayong Province and LP Tay Kongthong of Wat Sam-ngam Nakorn Pathom Province.
WHAT IS PONG PRAI KUMARN?
It’s a holy powder used for making amulets, and it contains human remains. According to a speech by LP Tim of Wat Laharnrai “obtaining help from power of the Buddha requested by the amulet owners is too slow, but obtaining help from ghosts (spirits) to answer the prayers of the amulet owners is alot faster”.
IS IT BLACK MAGIC? No, it’s not. The Guru monks like LP Tim and LP Tay Kongthong would perform ritual ceremonies to turn / ordain ghosts (spirits) of the dead to “monks”, in Thai called “Buet Phee”. The ghosts (spirits) will not do any harm to the amulet wearers. Those spirits will only do good things and help the amulet wearers for their own merit.
WILL THOSE HOLY SPIRITS LEAVE THE AMULETS? Possibly not. Why?Because each day in spirit world is equal to 100 ordinary solar years of our planet.
WHAT IS ITS POWER?
1) It could make you have a highly activated sixth sense. Sixth sense, or subtle perception ability, is our ability to perceive the subtle-dimension, or the unseen world of angels, ghosts, Heaven (Swarga), etc. It also includes our ability to understand the subtle cause and effect relationship behind many events, which is beyond the understanding of the intellect. Extrasensory perception (ESP), clairvoyance, premonition, intuition are synonymous with sixth sense or subtle perception ability.
2) Maha Larp, it brings lucky wealth.
3) Maha Sanay, it brings magic charms
4) Metta Maha Niyom, it helps you gain loving, kindness and compassion from people all around you.
5) Klaw Klad, Pold Pai, it pushes you away from all danger.
6) Warning of danger
HOW WAS IT MADE?
According to the interview of Mr.Kularp Joichareon (Mor Larp), in BE 2515 (1972) LP Tim had the intention to make Buddha amulets as gifts to people who donated for the construction of Sala Pawwana Pirath Building at Wat Laharnrai, and LP Tim told 2 of his non-monk disciples, Mr.Sai Keawsawang, and Mr.Kularp Joichareon (Mor Larp) that “we will go to get the good stuff tonight, the undertaker will cremate E Som at Wat Laharnrai by tomorrow. And the 2 of you must prepare things for the ritual ceremony”. E Som or Mrs.Som was a pregnant girl, a relative of Mr.Sai Keawsawang`s wife. E Som had a fight with her husband and later committed suicide with 7-8 months pregnancy. E Som died on Saturday and was going to be cremated on Tuesday. After 11 pm that night LP Tim later told Mr.Sai Keawsawang, and Mr.Kularp Joichareon that he would go to bed, and LP Tim said “you have to practise what I have taught you yourself!”, so Mr.Sai Keawsawang, and Mr.Kularp Joichareon had to ride bicycles to the grave yard of Wat Laharnyai where the body of E Som was buried, by themselves. Soon after arriving at the grave of E Som, Mr.Sai Keawsawang, and Mr.Kularp Joichareon did the ritual ceremony to ask permission from the Master of the Grave yard, and then asked E Som to give the skull of her unborn child, and some oil from her flesh (Namman Prai) around her abdominal area.
The next day (Tuesday) before the cremation of E Som`s body at Wat Laharnrai, Mr.Sai Keawsawang, and Mr.Kularp Joichareon told the undertaker not to burn her body to ashes. Before cremation, Mr.Sai Keawsawang drilled a hole in the ground of cremation site under the position E Som’s body would be placed, and put an empty iron can to capture body fat of E Som while being burnt. After cremation, in the night, when everybody had left, Mr.Sai Keawsawang, and Mr.Kularp Joichareon went to the cremation site with one kettle of holy water given by LP Tim. Mr.Sai Keawsawang, and Mr.Kularp Joichareon collected the skull of E Som’s unborn child, a rib bone from E Som’s womb area, E Som`s skull, and the iron can that contained Namman Prai.
After getting what they wanted Mr.Sai Keawsawang, and Mr.Kularp Joichareon threw holy water from the kettle from their heads to their toes, to wash away bad omens that would come with the stuff they were taking from the cremation site. Mr.Sai Keawsawang, and Mr.Kularp Joichareon gave the stuff to LP Tim, and LP Tim performed a ritual ceremony in his monk-house alone, non-stop for 3 days and 3 nights without food, drink (LP Tim was a vegetarian), or sleep. After LP Tim’s ritual ceremony, LP Tim gave the 2 skulls and bone to Mr.Kularp Joichareon to grind them into powder by stone mortar. Soon after the grounding had finished, that stone mortar magically broke into 2 pieces.
Mr.Kularp Joichareon could grind those bone and skulls into an amount of fine powder that would fit inside 1 can of Mali Sweetened Condensed Milk 397 ml. Mr.Kularp Joichareon also had to grind 108 kinds of sacred, sun dried herbs, along with a large amount of fertilizer they had previously dried out, then mixed it all with the bone powder. Mr.Kularp Joichareon`s mixture was equivalent to about 1 jar (7200 ml). This was later mixed with Holy Powder`s made by LP Tim including Pong Pattamang, Pong Ittijay and Pong Tri Nisinghe. The total quantity of finished Pong Prai Kumarn was equivalent to about 3 quarters of an iron bucket (16 litres).

Endless Cycles: The Maya Concept of Time
Tumblr media
A depiction of the Maya calendar round1.
The calendar was at the centre of a Maya person’s life, telling farmers when to sow and when to reap, showing kings when to appoint new rulers and if their rule would be profitable or calamitous, and allowed dedicated astronomer-priests to divine the future written by the gods and to warn their kings and people of upcoming disasters and take ritual measures to prevent them2.
The Maya calendar is really not just one calendar but four distinct, interlocking cycles working together to create a cohesive date in time. These four cycles, known as the Haab, the Tzolk’in, the Calendar Round, and the Long Count, each add further context to the period of time it describes, imbuing each date with a distinct religious meaning3.

What’s known as a singular “Maya calendar” is actually a series of multiple calendars working in tandem to measure increasing units of time4.
Similarly to how in our current Gregorian calendar system5 we date times and eras using a specific system (take as an example the Gregorian date Saturday June 16th, 2018: the day of the week is Saturday, the numerical day is the 16th, the month is June, the year is 2018 and the millennium is C.E. 2018), the Maya used their system of calendars and religious cycles to do approximately the same thing, using all four measures to create one main dating system to give context and a sense of organization and meaning to the events and histories of their lives.
The Haab
Tumblr media
A stylized version of the Haab calendar6.
This calendar is likely the easiest for us to understand today, because it has approximately the same amount of days as our current solar calendar—365, although it lacked a concept of a leap year, so eventually their calculations would’ve run behind the actual solar year7. Unlike our modern calendar, however, the Haab has 19 months, broken down further into 18 months made up of 20 days (these 18 months are known as Pop, Wo’, Sip, Sotz’, Sek, Xul, Yaxk’in, Mol, Ch’en, Yax, Sak’, Keh, Mak, K’ank’in, Muwan, Pax, K’ayab, Kumk’u in Yucatec Maya) and an additional 5-day month at the end of the year known as Wayeb.
Tumblr media
The Haab months. As there was no one centralized kingdom of the Maya, each group would have their own names for the glyphs in their own dialects, even though the general system of days was the same8.
This final month was a much-feared point of time when people would stay in their homes and avoid washing their hair or doing any kind of hard work to avoid misfortune9, and priests would recommend bloodletting and human sacrifices to their state rulers in a bid to convince the capricious gods to preserve the current age10. These sacrifices, it was thought, would nourish the gods and encourage them to bring prosperity, rain and a productive harvest to their follower’s fields, and keep up the cycles of natural life that the Maya so desperately depended on so that their way of life could be continued.

Alonso Méndez explains the Haab and how it relates to the culture of modern Maya11.
The Tzolk’in
Tumblr media
A picture showing the interlocking cycles of the Haab, Tzolk’in and other calendar systems of the Maya12.
The Tzolk’in is a bit more difficult to picture, as for most of us today it appears to be a strange amount of days for a calendar-260 days, but it held significance to the ancient Maya as well as to their modern descendants, and it is believed that it was structured after the growing cycles of corn or after the duration between human conception and birth13. There isn’t a true equivalent in the Gregorian system.
youtube
A Maya person explains the importance of cycles14.
Tumblr media
The Tzolk’in day names. Once again, there is a fair amount of variation between dialects15.
This system has no months, but instead uses the same numbers—1 through 13—in succession of 20 day glyphs, which creates 260 unique days, each tied to a deity or god or element16. As these dates only repeat once the full 260 days have passed, these days are unique and each carries a certain ritual importance. Why 260 days? This is the amount of time for the gestational period of humans, 9 cycles of the moon, the amount of time for the sun’s zenith movements, and the growing cycles of corn17. This calendar adds context and ritual meaning to the otherwise secular and repetitive Haab.
youtube
Alonso Méndez explains the significance of the Tzolk’in18.
The Calendar Round
Tumblr media
The Tzolk’in and Haab dates help form a new counting system, called the Calendar Round, another helpful system for dating events. Just how it takes 100 years for our calendar to register a new century, so to does the Calendar Round take a certain amount of passes through the calendar to register a new age19.
Made from the Tzolk’in and Haab working together, the Calendar Round counts 52-year cycles, seen as being of great importance to the Maya, as this is how long it takes for one full cycles through the calendar to complete. The number 52 has great spiritual significance to the Maya religion, as it is believed one gains special elder wisdom upon their 52nd birthday20. These specific combinations of Haab and Tzolk’in dates will only repeat exactly the same way every 52 years21, similarly to how our calendar “resets” every January 1st, or how one’s birthday will only be on the same weekday every couple of years.
The Long Count
Tumblr media
A Long Countdate, shown here mounted to a wall22.
As the name implies, this system tracks very long dates, or cycles, which the other calendars alone cannot, and kept track of the current millennium the Maya people reckoned themselves to be in, from a mythical creation date of August 11th, 3114 B.C.E. or in the Maya system, 144, 000 days (baktun), 7,200 days (katun), 360 days (tun), 20 days (uinal), and 1 day (kin23). The Long Count keeps track of the current cosmic cycle, which was of great importance as it showed when a new age could be ushered in via a violent end of the current one by the gods24. One great cosmic cycle took 5,126 years to restart, which celebrated the Maya concept of the constant cycle of re-creation of the universe25.
Similarly to our concepts of B.C.E. and C.E.26, this calendar allowed the Maya to track their mythical and practical ancient histories, giving us great understanding of the era in which events took place in the Mesoamerican world. This is also where the idea of the “2012 apocalypse” originated from, as another cosmic cycle was completed on the winter solstice on the 21st of December,
In reality, this just means that a new “cycle” or era has come, not that the world would necessarily end27.
Altogether, the Maya calendar adds beauty and a sense of timelessness to the Maya religion, aids researchers with surprisingly accurate dates for events of Mesoamerican history, and brings deeper appreciation for the ingenuity and innovation of the region and of ancient cultures.

Pre-match odds fluctuate all the time ahead of an occasion starts and this means you get the ideal doable option out of those fluctuations. It does not imply, for instance, that if you have been to place a bet on one outcome, and as the event goes on it becomes clear that the outcome is increasingly unlikely, that you can advantage from larger odds. Although we love all kinds of diverse promotions right here at The Punters Web page, eventually, superior odds is one particular of the absolute top rated priorities when it comes to selecting a bookmaker. Big League Soccer the leading soccer league in the United States and Canada has expressed sports betting as a possible way to get recognition. #TGTfeature 008: Lea Luna [Magik Muzik; Dim Mak; Raid Recordings: Denver, Colorado, USA] Fresh off my interview with world champion turntablist DJ Shiftee, #TGTfeature 008 is with the skilled Lea Luna, who kills it on the decks whether bass, house, or beyond! She took the time out for a chat just before headlining a hometown show at The Black Box. This and forthcoming #TGTfeature articles will highlight dedicated musical talents by featuring their recent work as well as an in-depth interview. Known for her passion and dedication to dance music as well as the art of DJing, Lea Luna is also a chart-topping singer and a respected music journalist. She kindly shared her thoughts on bass music, repping Denver, dealing with online trolls, and more. A bit about Lea Luna: - With nearly 20 years behind the decks, she’s played numerous noteworthy clubs: NYC's Limelight, LA's Avalon, and Denver's own Beta - Frequently called on for vocal collaborations, she’s recently worked with the likes of Sydney Blu, Manufactured Superstars, and Quivver - Also known for her production work, she regularly releases her own music, including “Rock Show” out via RAID Recordings
TGT: You’re leading an excellent lineup of bass talent at The Black Box, all representing Denver. What styles will you be bringing for this set, and how do you determine ‘tough bass’ in 2018? LL: I’m definitely planning on keeping it bass-driven, much like my last Black Box set was. Bass house, maybe a few breaks, maybe a few trap drops to break it up. I’ve always said this as my overarching quote: “Genres don’t define artists, artists define genres.” I pretty much live by that ideology. I’ve been DJing for nearly two decades now and have seen many music fads come and go (fidget, for instance, was one such fad genre in the bass category I used to like that died). Everything all stems from two main influence points- the first influence is the roots of the underground— the old history behind the emergence of the new sound. People like classic vocal hooks in newer remixes if they were a part of the scene back in the day, and bass house wouldn’t be where it is now without the original house music and garage innovators. The second influence is technology. Bass music sounded way different before the VST (virtual instrument) plugin Serum was invented because producers had different tools. I remember when the VST called Massive first came out and dubstep as a genre resulted. Electronic music is largely affected by these nerds who make virtual instruments and how artists interpret that technology as tools for creative flow. While everyone as listeners are pulling apart which bass music artists are making new genres, most real artists are at home dorking around with compression ratios and wave tables trying to invent an actual noise. So it’s hard for me as an artist to talk about bass music as an evolving fad because I sit here with the tools all day looking at the other perspective of what’s really evolving. TGT: Denver is certainly a unique place! How would you describe the realities and complexities of the scene here as a local artist with a global following? Any advice for up-and-coming DJs/producers on navigating our “island?” LL: I could not be more proud of Denver, and even electronic music as a scene in general. This city used to only offer these (beloved) secret warehouse-type hideout parties with a bunch of obscure DJs, vinyl collectors, and underground ravers interested in coming, and now every large venue in the city is wall-to-wall packed with dance music fans on any given night. There’s a lot to be accredited to the increase in our culture, but also a lot that has been bastardized. What I will say to the new kids is if you’re out here letting a controller do all the work for you onstage, playing the top 40 dance chart releases in order so you can be popular, you are sh*tting all over my craft and culture. It’s not a popularity contest and the DJ booth is not a bottle service area. The best way to become a DJ is to care about actually DJing. Be authentic, know your roots, respect your predecessors, respect women, respect other subgenres, and don’t spend your life savings on social media likes. Inspire people, ask for help, collaborate, offer something OF yourself before asking about something FOR yourself. Create. Learn. Be humble (but please stop humble-bragging). Start a crew. Give a damn, you know? We’ve all had our bouts with fame and drama as artists, but if you’re not creative at all and you’re not keeping it real, you shouldn’t be doing this.
youtube
TGT: There’s a lot of debate about whether certain strains of electronic music have reached full saturation, or have become so derived they’ve practically lost relevance. What are your thoughts on the current electronic dance scene, particularly within house music, and what’s your approach to keep your own productions sounding fresh? LL: People of the underground like to worry I’m too commercial, people of the commercial world like to worry I’m too underground. Some people want to hear music everyone understands, some people act rude when something becomes popular because they want to be viewed as purists. Like I said before, know your roots, know the trends, give a damn, create something original, and keep it moving. That’s the motto. If I claimed to be a purist 10 years ago and stuck to it, I’d be in hot water right now trying to play washed up music that pales in comparison to new mastering and technology on those fresh new funktion-ones (the incredible speakers they have at Black Box). If you stay current in your arena and true to your roots, genre and saturation thereof can be left to the listeners to decide. Ain’t nobody got time for that in my world. Artists. Define. Genres. I play what I think is ahead of the curve, and what I think is classic, all in one set. There’s no genre about it, but I will say that my tempo lately in clubs is 122-128, with an occasional drop to 100 just to grab people’s attention. All things house, garage, and breaks fall into that first category, and trap/twerk drops (second category) make life fun.
youtube
TGT: You’ve recently posted about receiving online threats from a random stranger. This is, sadly, nothing new for female public figures. How can readers (particularly men) succeed in eradicating this all-too-common misogyny within our music community? And offline, what should promoters and venues be doing to keep their dance-floors safe? LL: As for keeping clubs safe - I truly believe in strength in numbers. I have a strong, supportive, loving crew of friends and fans, as well as professionals and security guards. I take threats very seriously and file reports and blacklists when they happen to protect myself and other women. I have very strong security measures held at all of my shows, including this one. But in the big picture, the biggest thing that is going to make any club a safe environment is a positive example of the members of any audience at any show ACTING RIGHT TOWARDS WOMEN. If you see someone put something in someone's drink, report them. If you see someone abusing a woman either verbally or physically any way whatsoever, DO SOMETHING. Inaction is still an action. I come with a large group of friends that I deeply trust to every event and there is no way in hell someone is going to act in public like they do on the internet towards me or any woman in my presence and get away with it. One time someone lifted my skirt up and hit me on the ass at a show and although they were "only joking," they were being held by the neck of their shirt over the patio rail and reprimanded by my friends a split second later until security came and got them. These types of people will always be outnumbered and will never get away with what they think they can. They try it on the internet because they can troll and hide. [As for online threats:] Here’s the deal. People are jealous. It happens to both sexes, but primarily females because sexual iconography or lack thereof triggers people who writhe in unnecessary hatred from the comfort of their hate-hobbit computer den. Being attractive does not make me stupid or talentless. There is no such thing as “using” your looks. I look this way. That’s a fact, maybe a hobby, not a tactic. I also write music consistently and contribute a lot to this scene. Do all girl DJs do that? Likely not, but many do. The problem lies in the prejudice, pegging all women as having a backhanded agenda or a lack of intelligence or avoiding authenticity. This claim emerges from the hearts of people whose mothers didn’t hug them, whose girlfriends cheated on them, whatever. Hurt people hurt people. Do I care what these specific people think? No. I care if I screw up publicly and true fans lose interest in me. I care about staying true to myself and my brand, and I care about doing what I say I’m going to do for my shows, my opening DJs, the promoters who believe in me, my agent and manager, my crew, my friends, and my fans. Anyone who is so clearly coming from a place of jealous bigotry who tries to threaten me, embarrass me, or thwart my success always fails. Because they aren’t battling me, they’re battling something very dark and unhappy inside themselves. TGT: And, to end on a lighter topic – what’s your favorite spot in town for a post-gig meal? LL: Post gig? I’m always exhausted around then, but definitely just as junk food hungry as anyone at 2am leaving a bar. I rarely go out after bar hours to eat though. I’m more likely to hit a grocery store for a pizza to pop in the oven at home or if I’m feeling extra self-loathing I’ll get cheesy popcorn and pop tarts from a gas station [laughs].

How to Manufacture Face Masks Made of Fabrics?
Numerous producers have requested an example to sew constructed careful mask for emergency clinics and their networks. The DIY design in this post will encourage you to make a material lined masks with versatile ear loops or fabric ties.
The fabric masks can be made with an inside pocket in which you can embed extra channel material.
On the off chance that you can’t discover or don’t have any desire to utilize flexible ear circles, there are extra guidelines for making and utilizing texture ties. You can make elastic ties or fabric loops from cotton fabric, shirt material, or utilize instant inclination official.
A printable adaptation of these example directions is accessible at the base of the post. Face mask manufacturers in Bangladesh mostly use cotton knit fabric as this is their common locally made material.
Is there a requirement for Fabric Face Masks?
At present, the gracefully of careful masks is at a basic untouched low all through the whole country.
Requests for the standard dispensable masks utilized in emergency clinics are put in a rain-check for, and there is an appeal for defensive gear for human services laborers.
As indicated by the CDC, fabric masks are an emergency reaction choice when different supplies have been depleted.
Because of these worries, numerous medical clinics the nation over have mentioned natively constructed careful maks as a crisis band-aid measure.
How to Sew a Surgical Face Mask for Hospitals – Free Pattern
This is very important to keep in mind when you will sew face mask that it must follow medical grade like N95 which will be used for patients and health care staffs.
A Significant Difference
Face masks which are made in home won’t be effective 100% like N95 with proper filtration property recommended by WHO, and also can’t be used as PPE.
Relatively, they are meant:
To support medical people if they lack of proper masks.
To reduce the rate of infection in community where this is difficult to maintain proper social distance.
The Right Textile For Making A Face Mask
Scientists at Cambridge University confirmed the efficiency of a comprehensive range of domestic materials for procedure in homemade masks. They dignified how well the household supplies could capture and screen small elements.
Test information shows that the most ideal decisions for DIY textile mask are cotton t-shirts, pillowcases, or other cotton products. Utilizing a two fold layer of material for your DIY mask includes a little increment in filtration adequacy.
Other examination has discovered that best veils were built of two layers of heavyweight “quilters cotton” with a string check of in any event 180, and had a thicker and more tight weave.
This example has 2 layers of fabric, and an inward pocket wherein you can include extra layers of dispensable filtration material whenever wanted.

Stage 1: Sew to the top side, with pocket
Wrinkle the surface square shape down the center, with the right sides facing each other.
Sew along the top 8.5″ width edge, using an enormous 5/8″ wrinkle payment. Leave a 3″- 4″ opening in the point of convergence of this wrinkle to make an opening for the channel pocket, and to allow the cloak to be turned right side out in the wake of sewing. In the picture above, I’ve meant this opening with pins.
Update: Some people are believing that its less difficult to install/oust additional divert material in case they make a greater opening. As opposed to leaving a 3″ opening, you could make a 4″ inch opening.
Next, turn the surface so the wrinkle with the pocket opening is engaged in one side. Using an iron, press the wrinkle open.
Wrinkle the plenitude wrinkle reward under, encasing the unrefined edge of the surface. Topstitch or befuddle line along each side of this wrinkle to finish the edge. This will help shield the surface from fraying when you expansion and remove any channels.
Stage 2: Pin Elastic or Fabric Ties
On account of Using Elastic:
Pin the slightest bit of adaptable to each side of the spread, one end to the top corner and one end to the base corner of the surface square shape. This will make the ear circle once the spread is turned right side out and wrinkled. Recognize the pieces of the deals around 1/4″ to 1/2″ from the top and base corners of the surface.
The bit of flexible itself will be sandwiched between the two layers of surface. At the point when you turn the spread right side out, the flexible will be ostensibly.
Repeat this method on each side to make two ear circles.
Stage 3: Sew the Sides, Securing the Ties
With a 3/8″ wrinkle settlement, sew each side of the facemask. Backstitch over the adaptable or surface ties to ensure about them. Trim the corners with scissors so it will be more straightforward to turn the cloak right side out. Becare not to incidentally cut the join.
Turn the shroud right side out and press with an iron. You can use a pencil to push out the corners.
Stage 4: Make the Pleats
Make the spread with three evenhandedly isolated lines. To do this, you can measure and engraving with a water-dissolvable surface pen. Or then again, you can do what I did, and overlay the shroud in quarters – cover the sides to bargain, and subsequently wrinkle again down the center. Use an iron to make a wrinkle.
Use your markings to make three similarly scattered 1/2″ wrinkles. Nail the folds down, guarantee all wrinkles are going up against a comparative course. Sew at the edges to ensure about the wrinkles. I like to sew down the sides twice, just to guarantee.
Right when the spread is worn, the wrinkles should open downwards to shield any particles from social affair in the cover pockets.
What might you have the option to use as a channel?
It is basic to the point that everyone gets that while wearing a fabric face maks can offer some level of protection, it can’t make sure about against diseases a comparative way that a N95 spread can.
A wide scope of kinds of channels have been suggested, like coffee channels, felt, and vacuum channel sacks. Not these channels are amazing, and few out of every odd one of them are shielded.
What Type of Fabric is Suitable For Preparing Face Masks?
Cotton
This is the most common and available material found at home to make face masks. Cotton is available online and also this is good material for this purpose. Researchers said that its micro fibres can stop the virus particles on the way through. Some scientists also found that denim fabric and bed sheets with 120 threads count can capture more than 90% of big particles and 24-28% of small particles. However, cotton canvas fabric can filter almost 85% of large particles with 19% of small onces. But knit fabrics can’t capture much small particles. Visit this website to find various cotton canvas twill fabrics.
Nylon
As per the Smart Air test, 70D Nylon taffeta fabric can filter about 78% of large things and 12% of small particles, and it must be breathable. The more the thin yarn you will use the more you can filter small particles.
Paper Materials
If paper materials like towel tissue and shopping bag non-woven material are breathable, they can be used for masks and it will give good protection.
Natural Fibres
Fabric made from natural fibres like wool, cashmere and ramie have poor filtration capabilities.
Benefits of Fabric Face Maks
While reusable face masks may not be as successful as clinical evaluation ones, there are some different positives to consider:
Reusable – you can wear, wash and reuse them
Washable – popping your veil in a 60°C wash will murder any COVID-19 particles
Eco-friendly – you just need a couple to last you through the pandemic
They’ll keep you from (unwittingly) spreading the infection
They won’t upset or effect the clinical evaluation veil gracefully
Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers Turning Coronavirus Pandemic into Business
Facing garments order cancellation and losses as Western brands collapsed in this pandemic, many Bangladeshi manufacturers have been turning their production lines into new production like masks, gloves, gowns and PPE for export.
Many workers have lost their jobs and few manufacturers have closed their factories, therefore, this new opportunity is helping some manufacturers to survive and many workers to continue their job.
Over the past two decades Bangladesh became the world’s second largest garment exporting country after China by making clothes for world brands like Primark, Zara and H&M.

THREAD – History doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes: a
thread about the Anti-Mask League of 1919.
I’m not kidding I went HAM researching this
So, starting in Sept 1918 San Francisco suffered from Spanish Flu pandemic. Initial mask wearing was good — around 80 percent. By November cases were down, and public health officials recommended re-opening the city. Residents rushed to entertainment venues after having been denied this communal joy for months. The Mayor himself was fined by his own police chief after going to a show without a mask.
But a second wave surged in Dec 1918, and SF’s Health Officer again urged people to wear masks voluntarily. Left to their own devices, most citizens – by one count 90 % – refused to wear masks. Businesses, concerned about Christmas sales, opposed. So did Culinary Workers union. San Francisco residents were fed up. This was the second wave of the pandemic, and they had already spent months between Sept and Nov being hassled, fined and even arrested for not having a mask on. Challenges of constitutionality were heard. Christian Scientists objected, arguing that it was “subversive of personal liberty and constitutional rights.” Civil libertarians argued that if health officials could force them to wear masks, then it could force them to inoculate “or any experiment or indignity.”
The San Francisco Chronicle turned against the notion of mandatory masks.
Was the death rate high enough to justify remasking?
Wasn’t this just the return of normal seasonal colds?
How much was this due to a public ‘scare’ and hype?
An op-ed ran in the local paper w/headline ‘What’s The Use?’ after a man got sick despite following public health guidelines. A promised vaccine turned out to be bogus 100s of citizens congregated on Dec 16 to debate a masking order. On Dec. 18 someone had sent what appeared to be an improvised explosive device to San Francisco’s public health official signed, ‘Compliments from John.’ (!!!)
The story via historian Alfred W. Crosby:
San Francisco’s Public Health Officer stuck by his guns, refusing to back down, and saying there was evidence that masks helped! He implored the public to look to the data! Wear masks! They help!
More via Crosby:
But the public declined to listen to SF’s Public Health Officer. On Dec 19, officials voted down a mandatory mask order.
“The dollar sign is exalted above the health sign,” sighed the public health officer.
Protests continued: Over 2,000 people attended an event formed by San Franciscans called themselves ‘THE ANTI-MASK LEAGUE,’ denouncing the mandatory masking ordinance The gathering was of “public spirited citizens, skeptical physicians and fanatics,” writes historian Crosby. Moderates in the Anti-Mask League wanted to circulate an anti-mask petition. Extremists wanted to initiate recall proceedings of SF’s Public Health Officer. Chaos broke out until someone shouted, “I rented this hall and now I’m going to turn out the lights.” (Mak note: lol) The San Francisco Public Health Officer was a man named Dr. William C. Hassler. Think of him as the 1919 Dr. Fauci. Ignored by those who didn’t want to believe the data, threatened with violence, Hassler was conscientious and performed his job with distinction. I haven’t read anything about how many people became sick DUE to the Anti-Mask League event, where 1000s gathered to protest without masks. So we may not know how many people, if any, became sick due to this congregation. But safe to say it was not helpful during pandemic. On Jan 17, the day the masking ordinance went into effect, the # of new cases/deaths declined, the first decline in quite some time. This continued until the epidemic faded, a signal that the mask ordinance had helped wipe out the Spanish Flu in San Francisco. Of course, the SF Public Health Officer — the 1919 version of Dr. Fauci, got no credit for the decline in influenza cases. People continued to gripe about the masking even after the pandemic had been stalled by it. No one seemed to credit masking for the success of blunting the Spanish Flu in San Francisco — because, well, the crisis faded due to its success. “Rarely has the evidence in support of a scientific hypothesis been more overwhelming and more deceiving,” writes historian Crosby. Ultimately San Francisco was one of the American cities hardest hit by the Spanish Flu.
673 per 100,000 people died during the pandemic due to influenza and pneumonia, per U of Michigan.
50K cases total and 3,500 were killed, per Crosby.

The 1918/1919 protests against mask wearing and other public health measures have parallels to today. We learn through this episode that various groups of Americans have been pushing back against public health measures for more than a hundred years — and for similar reasons!! In learning about the Anti-Mask League of 1919, we see many of the same human elements as today: a portion of the population resistant to the measures; a business community crying out for relief; a second wave after an initial loosening; threats to public health officials. This is essentially a report that I pieced together by reading sources after getting curious about the 1919 Anti-Mask League. Any mistakes are my own. I started by drafting a few tweets and then spent an hour and a half researching it last night. One thing led to another…

Menteri Wanita Doraemon, dok asyik buat lawak saja....
Bila dah rasa bongok, cepat² padam Instagram posting. Sama bongok macam Timbalan dia, Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff .. terus hilang dari radar Twitter. Bagaimanapun hantaran itu sudah dipadam."
- dia suruh wanita bermake-up ketika bekerja di rumah. - dia gambarkan budaya keluarga kita laki bini selalu bergaduh di rumah. - buat lagak Doraemon bila nak tegur suami .
Kita tidak nampak message² begini relevan dengan Corvid19. Yang kita nampak menteri² Pak Din berlumba² tonjolkan kebiulan.
Mungkin dia berniat baik tetapi kaedah penyampaian sungguh condescending (merendahkan diri wanita).
Kaum lelak mungkin tidak feel/perasan/amused dengan message begini. Kaedah yang sungguh disgusting ! Hari ni, menteri ni buat pasai... Pak Aji... Ada ka patut kata suruh isteri buat suara doremon..Pening dah kerajaan tebuk atap ni.. - f/bk
Wabak Covid-19 rampas
bulan madu Muhyiddin...
Sambung baca seterusnya...
5 bilion je dia tambah rupa2nya...

Why Japan is normal when
the entire world is shutdown?...
I am continously thinking when Japan was the first country to be impacted by Corona from China because of the luxury ship Diamond Princess from China in January by now it would have gone to stage 4 like European countries. When Japan was hit with the Virus, My parents asked me to come back to India for few months and go back once it settles. But in Japan everything is normal till today. We were going to offices daily, we are going to all essential services. No restaurants are closed. No malls are closed. No lockdown. Metro trains moving normally. Bullet trains moving normally. All International borders are open. Also Japan has the high percentage of old people like Italy.  Tokyo has highest number of foreigners living. Tokyo is one of the best tourist attraction with lot of foreigners. Foreigners are still allowed inside. Only services stopped are schools and public events. Am listening to all theories of breaking the chain. Lockdown kills the chain process for the dense country like India. Tokyo is the most dense city in the world and how is it controlled. We are leading just the normal life as usual. Am Only scared when i see updates and news from India. I analyzed about it and probably it is because of the culture of Japanese people where the rules suggested to prevent Corona virus were practiced by them from childhood.
Tumblr media
1. Japanese people wear masks when they travel or come out. Usually we see 60% wearing masks daily on normal days. Even they catch very little cold they wear masks. This was their culture which helped in stopping the spread and cuts the chain. Normally any public facing person like receptionist, govt officers, doctors, nurses, station masters, train staff, police, janitors, etc wear masks daily at work. During winter we make children to wear a mask Daily so that they dont bother others when they catch cold. At home we have kodomo mask box and normal mask box. Kodomo mask is for children which fits them properly. 2. Japanese people lead a life where they dont bother others. They dont litter anything. They use dustbins only to litter or spit. Cleanliness is the part of their culture. They were taught how to be clean and public behaviour before learning alphabets in schools. 3. They dont do handshake but bow to greet. 4. Here washing hands is a part of culture. We have soaps and sanitizers in public toilets , office entrances and usually in every public space. Using sanitizers is pretty common which prevented spread of virus. I never used the sanitizers but from past 2 months am following the usage of sanitizers before entering office, using an elevator, the moment i see sanitizer try using it. 5. In restrooms i noticed that people wash their hands and also clean and wipe the sink area too to make it comfortable for the next person to use it. This is a usual practice in public metro stations too. 6. They carry wet tissue packets to clean their hands occasionally when they go out. 7. They usually maintain social distance with all This helped Japan to prevent lockdown. This needs a lot of Sadhana. These rules were part of Japanese culture which they practice with perfection. Something to learn from Japan. - Mohd Abdullah
