Pronunciation : mah-KOH-ah

Nicknames: mostly Koa (KOH-ah), but also: KoKo, Maki (Mah-KEE), and little fish (by Malia)

Parents: Bryce and Olivia Lahela

Personality: helful, intuitive, kind, loving, sympathetic, protective, vulnerable, can seem lazy and/or moody but he's just in his head thinking

Makoa is an male original character in the Open Heart Universe.

Facts and Headcanons

Koa loves the water, his parents can't keep him out. Malia insists its because he is a fish (when she is younger, but keeps up the joke as they get older.)

Koa enjoys surfing with his father and older sister. He enjoys snorkeling and later, diving. He also spends time cleaning up the beach and waters.

Koa had many pets growing up. He began with a goldfish, but over time expanded his aquarium to a variety of freshwater fish, and later, salt water fish.

He also had two pet turtles that Keiki bought for him. He named one of them Shelly after Keiki's stuffed animal turtle she took everywhere as a child that Bryce bought her.

He is very close with his aunt Keiki.

Koa considered following his parents and sister into the medical profession, but he took a marine biology class and fell in love. He never turned back, and his family couldn't' have been happier that he found his passion as a marine biologist and ocean conservationist.

Unlike the rest of his family, Koa right-handed, like his Aunt Keiki.

Malia Alaina Lahela (OC)

Malia means calm, serene, or peaceful. This meaning is reflected in the name's origin, as it is associated with the beautiful and serene Hawaiian islands. Malia can also mean "of the sea"

Malia is the Hawaiian form of "Mary", which is Olivia's grandmother's name.

Alaina is a Hawaiian Name that means precious.

Parents: Bryce and Olivia Lahela Birthday: November 23, 2023, 10:23am (Thanksgiving Day) Sign: Sagittarius Personality: honest, adventurous, intellectual, passionate, optimistic, curious, opinionated, reckless (at times), may seem egotistical due to her advanced knowledge

Facts and Headcanons

Malia loves the water (eventually). Malia is unsure about water at first, it takes some coaxing, much to her parents chagrin, but once she discovers the wonders of water, they can't keep their little mermaid out of the water.

After feeling her brother move when Olivia was pregnant with him, Malia thought he was going to be a fish.

Malia is ambidextrous. Both Olivia and Bryce are left-handed so at home, they always taught her to use her left hand. At school, her teachers taught her to use her right hand. Malia had no idea there was a difference. She thought one way the "at school way" and one way was "at home way" and she just assumed everyone could use both hands with equal fluency. This skill helps her become a very incredibly skilled surgeon due to her flexibility

Malia has many nicknames: Lia (pronounced L-EE-uh), Mali (pronounced Maa-LEE), little mermaid, and sometimes Mia (MEE-ah), and LiLi (LEE-LEE)

Malia is the inspiration for Olivia's children's books. Olivia and Bryce want to have quality children's books with medical themes for Malia and later Makoa, so Olivia writes (and eventually publishes) her own.

Middle Name HC: her parents settled on Malia quickly because it was a Hawaiian name (Bryce) but a form of Mary (Olivia / her grandmother. They went back and forth with her middle name. Olivia had suggested Adalyn so her initials would be MAL like MALia. But Bryce wanted Taylor (he's a closet Swiftie). Eventually, they settled on Alaina (a Hawaiian name that means precious). When they heard it, they both decided that was the perfect name: Malia Alaina Lahela.

"Malia loves her little fish brother... honestly, she really wasn't that far off. When he becomes a Marine Biologist and conservationist, Malia is just like, told you he's a fish!"

How does her brother feel about this?:

Makoa adores his sister. Of course, they fight at times because, siblings! but Malia always believed in her brother and always supported him, so while he finds her annoying at times, he still appreciates her.

As for the little fish part...

when he was a baby, Malia made fish faces at him and it always made him giggle. They both loved going to the aquarium together. When he was about 7, Makoa decided he didn't like the nickname anymore. He wanted to be a turtle (he and Keiki bond over their love for turtles). When he got older he reclaimed his fish title because he remembered how it brought him and his sister together. He will forever be her "fish" brother.

HAPPY MALIA DAY!! What does a perfect day look like for her?

Aww this is such a fun ask! Thank you!

Malia's perfect day definitely depends on her age. But mostly any day she's with her parents and siblings she's happy.

When she's a toddler, she definitely likes painting, singing, dancing, splashing in water, hugging her baby brother, and reading books with her parents.

When she's a little older, she loves visiting the aquarium and seeing all the penguins. She also likes swimming. She still enjoys her brother and reading with her parents, but she also likes reading to Makoa. Even before she could read, she pretended she could so she could read to Makoa. (It's okay, he doesn't know the difference, nor does he mind.)

As she gets even older, she enjoys learning how to surf and snowboard. She still enjoys visiting the aquarium. She also learns to play ukulele. So any day she gets to do those things, are wonderful.

How does Malia feel about Makoa when she finds out her parents are having another kid?

Malia is really excited when Olivia says she's getting a little brother or sister... but she's so young she doesn't really know what that means. For the longest time, she thought Makoa was a fish. Her parents tried to explain that it was a little baby like she was, but she insisted he was a fish especially once he started "swimming" around in mommy's tummy.

Malia loves her little fish brother... honestly, she really wasn't that far off. When he becomes a Marine Biologist and conservationist, Malia is just like, told you he's a fish!

How many kids do your mcs have?

Thanks for the ask. I'm not sure if you had a particular MC in mind, so if I don't mention the one you were looking for her, just lmk and I'll do my best to answer you.

These are HCs I have and are subject to change :)

Alex Hunt: Originally, Alex and Thomas were going to have 3 children, the twins and another daughter. However, I really, really love the dynamic of Alex, Thomas, Bogart and the twins. I love this family as is and they feel whole to me. So I'm just sticking with the two they already have: Felicity and Vincent (sorry hypothetical other child)

Olivia Lahela: Olivia and Bryce have 3 children. The first is a daughter, Malia who is Bryce's pride and joy. He is the most overprotective first time father. Two-three years later comes their son, whom Malia initially thinks is a fish (she loves water and thinks he's swimming in his mama's belly). Then only 18 months later they have a third child (gender tbd)

Ellie Shepherd-Ramsey: Ellie and Ethan have 2 children, both sons. Their first son is Hudson. They treasure spending time with him and enjoying many of his first milestones before trying again for their second child. There's 4 years between their boys.

Daenarya Volari?: Mal and Daenarya have 5 kids (not counting all the orphans they take care of)! Several months to a year after opening their orphanage, they decide to adopt Rayden and Lydo, two brothers who were their first rescues. Shortly afterward they find out they're pregnant (it's a girl), but still go through with the adoption because they love those two boys. Mal and Daenarya's 4th child is also theirs biologically (gender tbd). Their 5th child exists, but I haven't decided if it's biologically theirs or adopted, I'm leaning toward biologically theirs, but I can be persuaded.

Laura Schuler : Levi and Laura have Lily, whom they both adore and Levi treats as his own. Levi and Laura welcome their first child (aka their little sprout) together, a boy. They both want more children, but with Levi touring, it isn't easy so they're still discussing what a future beyond Lily and their son would look like.

Bryce and Olivia do have 3 children. Their baby girl is Malia Noelani Lahela (nickname: Lia) and I think I've finally settled on Makoa Kai Lahela (nickname: Koa) for their little man.

For Ethan and Ellie, their first son Hudson is a good mix of the two of them. Their second son is all Ethan.

For Mal and Daenarya, their first kid looks like Mal but is all Daenarya in personality. Their second is an equal mix of both which spells 100% trouble!

It's so funny that I didn't realize I had all L names for Laura and Levi and it just worked out, so yes, their son will also have an L name. Liam and Landon are the two front runners right now :)

Hmm... Justin and Mari. I never actually thought that far ahead for them. But yes, I do think they'll have children. Justin definitely wants a big family. Mari only wanted one. They have a son first. And Mari falls in love with her baby and is open to having more. So they have another, a daughter, but Justin convinces her once more, and Mari loves her children so she agrees and they end up with twins. Justin is thrilled, Mari is a bit overwhelmed and Justin is there every step of the way and takes paternity leave to take care of them with her.
