Vector Illustration 

Redundancy in Adobe programs - different ways to access 1 feature/skill.

Vector artwork is built from vector graphics which are images created by mathematical formulas (and therefore, infinite scaling possibilities). In comparison, rastor art is created with coloured pixels (pixel - smallest measure on a screen). 

Therefore Illustrator (Ai) is great for vector graphics. It’s good for logos and big-print jobs. Resolution independent. On the other hand, Photoshop (Ps) is resolution dependent so images can turn out blurry if scaled up. 

Illustrator Drawing Basics Support

- Adobe Learn + Support for tutorials. 

- Explore outside of uni/do side projects to practice all Adobe applications. 

- Ai > Help > Browser tutorials > user guide > type in any tool you’re unsure of and it will come up with the updated tutorials. 

- Creative Cloud: a portal to different and relevant sources like Behance where you can discover different designers and projects. 

Tips + Tricks + Suggestions

- Image trace: high fidelity means more anchor points and a more complex image. 

- Using Psd files in Illustrator: means that any saved changes made in the original Psd file will be carried over into the Illustrator file which contains the placed Psd. 

- When looking at artwork, try to deconstruct how you would re-create that piece. Research art/artists that pique your interest. 

- Blob brush: it has a fill characteristic and isn’t a stroke (paintbrush).

- When working with layers in Illustrator, double click a layer and select ‘Template’. This will lock the layer and allow you to work on top of it.

- Try working with 3 general layers. 1: Template, 2: ‘final’ elements, 3: working (more for experimenting). 

- Backing up files: make sure to use the "3-2-1 Backup Strategy" where there are always three copies of your data in 2 different methods and one offsite.

Designers vs Illustrators: Designers think about the overall composition of their work in which vector artwork features in it as a structural element. Illustrators are more art-focused and created individual images - not an entire design. 

Blood Bros - Kiwi Illustrator, working in Tokyo. A vibrant snapshot of an ordinary street in Japan - kind of reminds me of a scene in a Studio Ghibli movie.

Tom Haugomat - French Illustrator. The subtle texture of pressed ink in the sky adds an extra layer of visual depth to what is an overall flat and graphic image. 

Wassily Kandinsky - Russian Painter. I love the roughness and authenticity that comes with a drawing like this - appears to be pen on paper.

Alexei Rodchenko - Russian artist. Minimalistic use of colour and a clever use of a grid system to inform the placement of shapes and colour.

What CorelDraw Maker Must Consider:

The maker of CorelDraw must think about two things specially i.e. compatibility on all common OS and price specially for educational institutions. I know they understand it very well but they need to think like an CorelDraw learner, CorelDraw training provider, and like a design agency. CorelDraw still in 2015 not compatible with Linux, this is a serious point to understand by them. I hope they will do some for open source OS too.
