I’ve been disappointed w/ snk post time skip because once we had new characters I knew that meant sacrificing character development/moments for established characters and I feel yams has been racing towards the finish to the extent that certain plot points just aren’t believable to me. Many ppl wonder how Erwin would have handled things but honestly? He would have just sat on his thumb and spun like everyone else. Because getting to the end quickly demands that. What do you think?

Erwin’s main strength, imo, was manipulating other people, mainly his political adversaries, or, rather, playing them like a fiddle so they would do what he wanted...or so the situation would go how he hoped it would be advantageous to him and his schemes -  which were mostly for the sake of their survival. This post-timeskip situation called for that, precisely. Hange has never been a politician, but I think they were also dumbed down just for plot convenience, especially because they had Pixis close-by, notoriously good at playing the politics game, but even him was mellowed out. I feel like the “usual” Erwin would’ve done a better job.

Of course, we don’t know how he would’ve reacted to the basement reveal, I just know that I disagree with those who think he would have become a “shell of his past self, too burdened by his guilt”. I think the basement reveal would have reinvigorated him at one point. Guilt had never stopped him before, the only reason he got such complicated feelings in Shiganshina was because he was finally faced with his possible death AND FAILURE, much more than other times. As we have seen in chapter 134, people /feels bad man/ a lot more easily when faced with their imminent death and a hopeless situation. 

So, while he has always felt a certain guilt over the people who died under his command, I don’t feel he would’ve been too affected once he realized that “their sacrifice meant they finally grasped the truth”, however grim that was. 

A better political approach wouldn’t have created the dead end Paradis found itself in, which pressured Eren - alongside his unlocked future memories THAT WERE A RESULT of present choices anyway. If those present choices were different, that future wouldn’t have manifested.

But we also need to consider that if Erwin was alive, it means Armin would be dead, and I feel this would’ve aggravated Eren’s mental state. But ultimately what pushed Eren to this were his future memories AND the inescapable cruel end Paradis was happily running towards. If Erwin being alive had changed those two variables, things wouldn’t have come to this. I think Eren would’ve held a grudge against Levi, Hange etc, and probably even the military, but he wouldn’t have gone rouge. Maybe he would’ve lost his will to fight, after all, because Armin’s apparent death gutted him and crushed his heart as we have seen. Maybe in this cirsumstances, he would’ve let himself be used fully as a weapon by the military, as there were heavy hints throughout the story that this could’ve very likely happened.

Now I’m sad, but I think I would’ve liked that more....than...this.
