An Open Letter to the People of the Middle East,

 I’m sorry.

 I’m sorry that my President as well as many of my fellow Americans have chosen to fear. To exclude you rather than embrace you. For three months, you clothed me, you fed me, you kept me safe and most of all you loved me like I was one of your own. You showed me that there is so little to fear but so much to love.

 I’m sorry that my people have not returned the hospitality and love that you so freely gave to me. That many of you are now, in fact banned from entering my country because of your nationality. Because of where you were born and chose to build a life.

 I’m sorry for the hurtful history between our countries. For the wars and deaths. For the stereotypes and hurtful words used against you; and for the idea that you are “all the same”, you are not.

 I’m sorry that my president and my people have not taken the time to understand you. To understand that difference is not a bad thing but a beautiful one. To understand how much life and vitality you breathe into this country with the different aspects of your culture.  

 I’m sorry that we have a false understanding of Islam. That we allow the acts of extremists to tarnish our views of the peaceful majority. That instead of coming to you in loving relationship, we too often come with our Bibles raised to attack. We have failed to truly live up to what you see us as: a Christian nation.

 To the Refugees:

 I’m sorry that my country has forsaken you in your greatest time of need. That we saw your suffering and chose to turn the other way. That when the oceans of chaos, despair, war and persecution came we stood on the shore and watched as you drowned in the waters. Some of you have found out that you are no longer cleared to travel to America to begin your new lives. You worked for the last three to five years through this process, it cost you everything you had, your bags were packed and tickets printed but we closed our doors on you. And now we are both here, you and I sitting in this pain together, looking for the smallest measure of hope.

 I’m sorry.
