I don't think I ever officially put it out here with the various vamps on this blog so I guess I'm doing a small thing about them. Generally, there are two broad categories: Betrayers and Empyreans.
Betrayers are the technical vampires. They suck human blood in order to sustain themselves. They have sensitivities to light and sound because of how enhanced their senses are. They are sturdy for sure but can be killed by anyone basically willing enough. So like decapitation and a thorough staking technically can kill them. The problem is that they'd be fighting you the entire time and that is probably what takes one out before hand.
Their vampirism was a curse from the gods for their insubordination and hubris. And they were faced with the threat of mortality for the first time in their lives. And like any other being that grapples with it, they tried to ward it off as best they could. Or in their case, attempt to murder death. This very successful but not complete attempt is why they are called Betrayers. They turned their back on the gods completely for their own whims and tried to kill their counter parts the Empyreans. They were aided by an Empyrean that was called Anastasiya, who is hailed as someone akin to a saint.
The original Betrayers made several families after the massacre of Empyreans. These four families are the Kazatiyev, the Sokhrykov, the Nemanikhin, and the Svikhushin. They are separated by the specialty of their powers: 'almighty,' clairvoyance/temporal, mind, and 'physical' respectively. And most vampires are likely descended from one of these but they're so many (relatively) that there's the main families and all other vampires. They have a lot of influence because they have been around alongside a lot of humanity but they are mainly centered in Eastern Europe as that's simply where they have been the longest. They are cordial but not usually involved with other non human races.
Empyreans are more akin to sentient divine constructs. The closest 'approximations' to what they are are either angels or any number of races not quite gods but also not human such as the Asura, the Tuatha Dé Danann, or the kupua (as a note they are not those beings but the closest to explain). They do not have a divine aura or sense about them though. They are closest to their original designation of sentinels to humanity, the magnum opus to their gods. However it has been a long time since their gods have gone silent and a long time to drift.
Their vampirism was more of 'incentive' to carry out the punishment of the Betrayers, which upholding their mortality. Empyreans were those that did NOT fall to their hubris but the gods no longer trusted that they couldn't fall victim to it. Thus the curse of their vampirism. Because of it, Empyreans can only be sustained by the blood of other vampire types. Many were on the fence about this shift since they and the Betrayers had been equals to this point and many did not want to turn a blade on, essentially, family. The Empyrean that sought to rouse them to their duty--to allow themselves to survive--was one that went by Aleksandra.
A lot of Empyreans were murdered by the Betrayers, whom used their natural weakness: humanity. They aren't to harm humanity and it by faith of humanity that they can be slain. Essentially if a human believes that something CAN kill an Empyrean, it WILL harm them (Luckily the knowledge of this is mostly lost). This massacre left the survivors to scatter and while there were more families, to this day only three survived: the Mechnikov, the Mochalin, and the Voznesensky. All Empyreans have a natural connection to the world in some way, usually considered an 'elemental affinity.' And all have a power that reflects their 'true nature.' They do have more influence in the 'underground' or with other nonhumans due to them being less able to directly deal with humanity. They have no central seat of power but are of a sort of 'pact' to help each other out.

1991 Part 1: The Vor Game by Lois McMaster Bujold
Book 9 in my project to read all the female winners of the Hugo and Nebula Best Novel Awards from 1977 onwards. As Lois McMaster Bujold is one of my favourite authors, I was looking forward to re-reading this one, and it was as entertaining as I remember.
The Vor Game won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1991. The other nominees were:
Earth by David Brin
The Fall of Hyperion by Dan Simmons
The Quiet Pools by Michael P. Kube-McDowell
Queen of Angels by Greg Bear
Michael P. Kube-McDowell is an author that I hadn’t heard of before, and while I have heard of the other three nominated authors, I haven’t read the nominated books. In fact, I don’t think I have read any of their books. As I work my way through the years, I am realising how little of the SFF ‘canon’ I have actually read. Though defining the SFF ‘canon’ is another task in itself!
The Vor Game was not nominated for the 1991 Nebula Award for Best Novel, which was won by Tehanu: The Last Book of Earthsea by Ursula K. LeGuin. However, the first part of The Vor Game was originally published as a novella called ‘Weatherman’, which was nominated for the 1991 Nebula Award for Best Novella.
The Vor Game is a follow-up to The Warrior’s Apprentice, where Miles, having been rejected from the Barrayan Imperial Military Academy due to his physical disabilities, ended up becoming the Admiral of the Dendarii Mercenaries, mainly through fast-talking and luck. At the end of the book, he was admitted into the Academy and The Vor Game opens when he has graduated and is waiting to be given his first posting. This scene, with a sergeant handing out assignments, reminded me of the opening scene of Sargasso of Space by Andre Norton.
Miles is hoping for ship duty, like all the new graduates, but ends up assigned as the Meteorology Office at an arctic training base for infantry, which seems to be one of the worst available assignments, especially for someone with the physical disabilities that Miles has. But it’s a test - if he can manage six months there and show that he can work with the ordinary enlisted men (who are more likely to see him as a ‘mutie’ due to his disabilities), and avoid his usual “insubordination issues” where he believes he is better than his commanders, he’ll be put forward for a posting on the newest Imperial Cruiser, due for launch in six months.
Spoiler: Miles does not pass this test. While he does the right thing (intervenes when the training base commander gives out an illegal order), he is detained by Imperial Security and left in limbo - not charged with mutiny, but no longer able to serve in the military. Until an unstable political situation on one of the wormhole routes from Barrayar to the wider galaxy means he is sent off to gather information and to try to remove the Dendarii Mercenaries from the situation, due to their connection with Barrayar. At this point, the book switches into a political/ spy thriller set in space stations and onboard space ships, with double-crossing, political intrigue, and the Emperor of Barrayar having gone missing and ended up in the same place. It’s very entertaining, and the actual space battles are only a small part of the story, which focuses on people and politics.
It’s quite hard for me to write objectively about The Vor Game as I am a fan of Lois McMaster Bujold and the Vorkosigan series, so my first thoughts are simply about how much fun it was to read, and how my feelings about the book have changed since I first read it, which was over ten years ago. The first Vorkosigan book that I read was Komarr, one of the later books in the series, and I ended up reading the whole series out of order (both publication order and chronological order). As a result, I have always felt that the calmer, older, Imperial Auditor Miles was more real than Madcap Miles of the Dendarii Mercenaries (“Daring Rescues Our Speciality!”), so it was interesting to re-read this having read the whole series.
I don’t think I picked this up the first time I read the book, but this time I noticed that under the high-energy plot is the theme of finding your place. By the end of the book, Gregor has accepted his role as the Emperor of Barrayar, and has won more freedom in his role. Miles is assigned a role in Imperial Security as a liaison to the Dendarii Mercenaries, which suits him better than regular military service (and sets up the next few books in the series).
(As an aside, I was convinced that this was the book where Aral Vorkosigan looks Miles straight in the eye and tells that Prince Serg’s death was the greatest piece of luck that befell Barrayar, when we the reader know this is not the full story, but I can’t find it in here, so it must be in another one of the series.)
The only issue is that the book can feel disjointed as you read it, as the first part (the Weatherman novella) is set on a military base in the Barrayaran Arctic Circle, while the rest of the book is in the more typical space opera setting of the Hegan Hub, a wormhole nexus. Although the two sections of the book are linked, the jump from one location to another seems off until the connections between the two sections are revealed. However, the plot carries you through.
The next book in my list of Hugo/ Nebula winners would be Tehanu by Ursula . K LeGuin, which won the 1991 Nebula Award for Best Novel. However, as I’ve only read the first book in the Earthsea series (several years ago), and this is book four, I’m planning to read the first three books before starting Tehanu itself.

A Pile of Fanwalkers (Part 3)
Part three of all these fanwalkers. Now it’s time for all the ones who are mean, and should not be trusted. Sometimes because they’ll stab you, and sometimes because they’re just... kind of massively evil.
The basic format for each planeswalker will be a Name/Colour Identity/Pre-Ignition Typeline/Homeplane blob of information, a quickish description of them and some “fun“ facts, and then some hits and misses for extra flavour. Also, I’m going to split this into three posts - “Heroic“, “Okay“ and “Villians“, for I believe I have the moral authority to judge my creations.
Also some of these are going to be from fanplanes, which will go undescribed beyond whatever tidbits come out the character flavour. Others will just have a ?, representing a lack of knowledge and/or sufficent worldbuilding. With that out of the way, let’s go!
Villians
Evil is not a state of being. It is a form of intent, and a form of action. Some of these Planeswalkers can be trusted. Some of them may even appear to be nice. But make no mistake. They have caused suffering. They have altered lives for the worse. Either by design or consequence, their effect upon the multiverse marks them as villians.
Aster - B, Human Warlock, Zodyas - Aster was born under the influence of a bad star, which granted him the ability to draw power from negative emotions. But don’t think that makes him a bad person. Aster’s powers do not compel him to perform evil deeds. They simply enable him. Motivated by nothing greater than his own self-interest, Aster is the truest example of a disaster with a point of view. He was, while it lasted, a member of the Infinite Consortium. After Tezzeret forget how to run it, Aster managed to… convince a number of cells to accept his leadership. While lacking a grand plan for his splinter group, he’s interested in expansion, if only for the sake of increasing his own personal power. Aster may possess a certain kind of charm, and some level of restraint when compared to other ‘walkers, but do not be decieved. The moment harming you becomes worth the effort, Aster will be ready to do so.
Aster is often described as being pale of skin and dark of hair. There’s some weird magic causing that, since different cultures usually focus on different things when describing others. Aster prefers to dress in the fashions of power, whether that happens to be expensive robes, hand-tailored suits, togas or other such clothing. He preferes to wear darker colours, but if opulence is the style of a plane’s elite, then opulent he shall be. While he does carry a mean looking dagger, his primary form of defense are his so-called attendants - humanoid shades he commands via magic. These can perform many tasks, such as “fetch me more wine“, “open that door“ and “kill them“. When Aster planeswalks, he dissipates into a fine black mist. Interestingly, if he’s thinking about planeswalking, his magic generates a similar mist, that trails from him as he moves.
Hits: Power, influcence, tormenting his enemies, using people’s guilt to literally physically crush them. Misses: The undead, constructs, Loxy, Constellation Cults trying to recruit him, being around Ashiok for too long.
Galina - WB, Human Advisor, Ithmorne - In her early life, Galina leaned much more towards the White aspects of her personality. Even as a member of the Zoriac Imperium, she valued their goal of peace greatly, and was one of those that saw certain practices as a detriment to that goal. However, this did not last. When the outpost she was in was raided, everything changed. The ignition of her spark saved her life, but not her right eye. Fortunately for her, Galina arrived on Ravnica within dragging distance of a Simic emergency care clinic, where it was assumed she was an Azorius member who had suffered a run in with the Gruul. This was a role she was happy to take up for real, once the chance provided itself, seeing the Senate as an obvious parallel for the Imperium of her homeplane. In fact, Ravnica seemed to have many similarities with Ithmorne. This could only be due to the work of Azor, the great Sphinx who had brought peace to her warring plane so long ago, and whose Compact still enforced it now. Galina soon realised that her ability to traverse the multiverse would allow her to find more worlds ‘saved’ by Azor, and in turn learn more from them. Ultimately, she decided, those factions on Ithmorne too small to be affected be the Compact would be forced into co-operating. And if not? Then they would perish. Such would be the price of peace. The process had already begun, Galina believed, and if accelerating the pace was necessary, it would be done.
Galina has white skin and long brown hair. Additionally, the events that led to her ignition left her with a noticeable scar, running from her temple, across her right eye, to halfway down her right cheek. Many wonder how her right eye survived such a wound, and the truth is that it didn’t. Instead, she had it replaced by the Simic while on Ravnica. Galina generally wears the standard uniform for those in her position in the Zoriac Imperium - navy blue military robes, kept in the best condition possible. Rather than carry a weapon, Galina relies on her mastery of law magic, using it bind and impede her enemies. She is also capable of many of the standard black mana abilities, especially those which weaken her foes. When combined, these make her a formidable, and potentially deadly opponent. Galina’s planeswalking effect is a jagged and chaotic burst of darkness, which can cause minor damage to living things that nearby.
Hits: Peace through power, Azor, law and order, her own take on the concept of justice, Simic biomagic. Misses: “Barbarians“, insubordination, traumatic memories.
Malius - UBR, Human Wizard, Innistrad - In every profession, there are those that push boundaries. They look at the rules, and wonder which are truly needed. These are the kind of people the majority of Innistrad distrusts. And in the case of the stitcher pariah Malius, they are completely right to do so. While his fellow skaberen found his “wolf with werewolf arms“ experiment a daring new idea, even they had limits. Rumors began that he had started to use demons as a source of parts, and that he consorted with diabolists for unknown purposes. These rumors contained some truth - Malius was interested in demons and had, for a time, used them to “improve” his creations. But over time, he had become interested in the nature of demonic pacts, and how one might acquire the benefits without having to pay the price. Somehow, he was able to construct a device that extracted the source of a demon’s power, and began using it to infuse himself with dark power. For a time, not demon, nor mob, nor torch-wielding monstrosity could stop him. The destruction of the Helvault was an opportunity to Malius, bring him yet more specimins. Everything was going well, until an angel arrived. She cut through his creations, and had both the strength and motivation to kill Malius. In an act of desparation, he activated the extractor, aiming it at the angel. She exploded (don’t worry - she got better (sort of)). This would have been incredibly fatal to Malius had his Spark not ignited, sending him across the Blind Eternities to Zendikar. And so, he soon discovered all sorts of new things to stitch. Including Eldrazi. In fact, Malius was straight-up ecstatic during the events of Eldritch Moon.
Malius’ various experiments have left him with sickly, pallid skin, and pale white hair. His eyes no longer appear human, and those who spend time around him soon feel uneasy. Malius wears the standard dress of the stitcher, a white labcoat, brimming with tools and notebooks. Malius often manipulates his tools via telekinesis, either to work upon a new creation, or as a method of attack. In dire situations, he calls upon the demonic powers he has infused himself with, physically taking on the form of a demon. This grants him signifigance strength, speed and endurance while it lasts, but prevents him from planeswalking, making it as risky as it is useful. When Malius planeswalkers, he disappears in cloud of dark and burning ash, crackling with lightning. This occurs even when he cannot actually planeswalk due to being a demon.
Hits: Extracting demonic power, demonic infusions, terrifying creations. Misses: Angels, torch-weilding mobs, basic medical ethics.
Skath - WBG, Naga Assassin, Orpheri - At first glance, Skath is like any other planeswalker assassin you might meet. She kills people for money, and she does it well. However, she is still a member of the organisation that trained her, a religious order of assassins on Orpheri. So Skath will not kill those standing on sacred grond, those not old enough to be an adult of their kind, and she requires more than just a payment before targetting a diplomat or member of a religious order. Beyond the rules of her faith, however, Skath kills without hesitation, selling death for gold and jewels. When not killing, she is surprisingly thoughtful, a writer of poetry and cultivator of interesting plants. And while unrepentant, she not always unrelenting. Put up enought of a fight, or simple hide in a shrine for a few days, and Skath will move onto easier targets.
Skath has copper-brown scales, and no hair, because Naga don’t have hair on Orpheri. She wears light armor on her torso, which is engraved with protective magic. Her favoured weapons are two scimitars, enchanted to deliver venomous strikes. She also carries a dagger, and a number of poisons, so that she might have the perfect tool for any assassination. In a pinch, she can bite someone, however the Naga Assassins of Orpheri consider this an act of last resort. Mainly because once you identify the cause of death as Naga venom, finding the killer is fairly simple. Skath planeswalks with a flash of pale orange light, leaving behind traces of sand. Interestingly, she is capable of being incredibly precise with her appearance on a plane, and has sometimes managed to planeswalk into a room based on it’s relative position to a know location.
Hits: Getting paid, botany, the statisfaction of a job well done. Misses: Cold places, oath-breakers, Locke, people attacking her from sacred ground (this is actually a bad idea - her religion sees this as an act of desecration, meaning you ultimately forfeit the protection provided).
Look at all these not nice people. It’s probably best to keep a distance between you and them. Of course, their motivations differ greatly, so if you were to find yourself in close proximity to them, you might be able to avoid getting stabbed. Or worse.

The Way Back: ***1/2 out of 5
If I were a betting man and heard of a movie about the new coach of a struggling basketball team that was released in March and featured Ben Affleck, I wouldn’t stake much on its quality. The premise has been done to death, March isn’t known for its cinematic achievements and, although he’s a truly underrated actor, Affleck doesn’t make the greatest career decisions. The Way Back is different. That is to say: it’s quite good.
It’s surprising how effective this story is within a film that once seemed like a post-Oscars write-off. Much of the praise should go to Affleck, the oft-criticized punching bag of armchair critics and petulant fanboys worldwide who insist he’s a ‘terrible’ actor or he ruined their lives or something. He’s not. And he didn’t. Affleck will never be Daniel Day-Lewis, but he’s a great director, he co-wrote one of the finest screenplays of our time with Good Will Hunting and he’s a good actor despite choosing roles that don’t do him justice.
Perhaps it’s all the unjustified hate that drove the poor guy to drink in real life. And, perhaps, it’s because of this painful reality that he took the role of a tortured alcoholic, a part he sinks into with ease. This is great for the movie but a wake-up call for us.
Affleck plays Jack Cunningham, who fuels his addiction by filling paper cups with booze to consume on the drive to his construction job in Los Angeles while getting black-out drunk every night afterward at the local watering hole. He’s usually taken home by his elderly friend, Doc (Glynn Turman), to sleep it off before starting the cycle again the next morning. Jack’s separated from his wife, Angela (Janina Gavankar), and has a rocky relationship with his family who’s concerned about him, especially his sister, Beth (Michaela Watkins), whose tough love leads to nagging, which is the last thing Jack wants.
It’s hard to blame her since Jack is nearing rock bottom and has, quite frankly, become an asshole. Though, Affleck is adept at making us care about him regardless of his flaws as we learn more about his tragic circumstances. The screenplay, written by Brad Ingelsby, really piles it on; the film’s message would’ve been effective without so many stressors—a certain late revelation in particular—but it’s better Ingelsby tries too hard to make us care than not hard enough. He would’ve been wise to put more trust in Affleck, who sells Jack’s pain as well as he sells his intoxication; he’s so believable in his drunken state, you can practically smell the booze on his breath.
So, basically, he’s the last guy who should be coaching a group of impressionable teen athletes. That opportunity presents itself when Father Devine at his former Catholic high school Bishop Hayes offers him the job of the basketball team’s head coach since the last one just had a heart attack and Jack used to be their star player who led them to several championships. Of course, he turns it down at first, but there wouldn’t be a movie if he didn’t eventually accept, though it’s still hard to swallow how quickly he reconsiders. Nonetheless, his personal journey of recovery in conjunction with his effort to bring this pitiful team some success forms the dramatic base of the story.
I’m averse to the critique that goes something like, “It’s not really about [insert sport], it’s more about [insert human issue],” because that’s pretty much common to every sports movie; otherwise, it’d be a documentary. Yet, The Way Back accentuates this idea and, although it still has some sports movie clichés, the filmmakers are admirably restrained. The film’s light on melodramatic speeches and overly manipulative tear-jerking, but what’s most subversive is how the basketball games are handled, mainly regarding how much of them we see, when we see them and how they end. I won’t give too much away, but don’t expect a typical finale.
It’s great that the movie focuses on Jack’s personal story, but it would’ve been nice to become more acquainted with some of the players. There’s a select few we get to know in varying degrees, including Brandon Durrett (Brandon Wilson), the introverted yet most talented player on the team whose mother has passed away and whose father can’t come to games as he’s at home with Brandon’s younger siblings. Jack makes Brandon his special project, encouraging him to speak up and realize his full potential; it’s a touching relationship that reveals Jack’s character without treating him as a saint. There’s also Marcus Parrish (Melvin Gregg) who begs for a spot on the team after Jack cuts him for tardiness and insubordination, and Kenny Dawes (Will Ropp) who’s constantly late for the team bus as he flirts with one cheerleader after another. Nonetheless, the filmmakers still don’t give us enough insight into the lives of these young men to make us care about their struggle on the court as much as we should.
Thankfully, we do see a lot of Al Madrigal as the assistant coach Dan. He’s a great antithesis to Jack and his loud, aggressive, profanity-fueled coaching style. Madrigal plays Dan so unassumingly that you’d swear he was actually a high school algebra teacher who assists with the basketball team. He’s a sensible everyman and a stabilizing force for the team and moviegoer alike. You really empathize with this character who’s struggling with how to handle Jack, someone who Dan likes as a friend but whose inappropriate behaviour is increasingly hard to ignore.
And when friends and family finally do intervene, it creates a bittersweet mixture of heartbreak and hope. The Way Back treats the human problems—addiction, loss, negligence—as the primary issues on which to focus, overshadowing the drama on the court. It also presents the topics realistically with no easy answers. Affleck helps convey this message with commendable honesty and vulnerability, making us empathise greatly with this tortured soul in one of the best performances of his career.

Ill be using the / symbols to separate before grace and after falling, since Both Sarah and Soren were both angels and demons before they died. Aka they were angels, then they fell from grace
{Name: Soren Haruhara}
{Species: Angel/Demon}
{Age: Unknown/Unknown}
{Eye color: Pale purpleish pink/ dark purple with a golden tint}
{Hair color: Black/Black}
{Likes: Training with his wolves, running through the forest, swimming in the rivers with his wife, spending time with his wife, planning every single day around his own duties./// Torturing others, ordering beings around, taking walks along the lava rivers. orgies.}
{Dislikes: Ones following around another angel like a blind sheep, not being able to think for oneself, not obeying orders, not being able to do ones job correctly// Insubordination, not doing ones job at all, suck ups, ones who try following him and his wife around}
{Lives: Little house near the wolves//Haruhara Castle//Dead .}
{Accent: Completely neutral in both cases. The only difference between him falling and him not falling is the fact that he got a more sultry tone to his voice once he fell. }
{Personality:}
Kind, caring, and hard, the male at least knew that he could always rely on the wolves that he trained. It also seemed as if he always had more patience for his wolves; some angels seemed to wear it thin quicker than them. Well, other than his wife, of course.
After falling? The male started to turn into something violent. If he didn’t get what he wanted from most of the demons under him, then he made sure that they were punished, or made sure that they understood that they needed to get him what he needed, or do their own chores on time. The only thing that didn’t change was his fondness towards his wife and the wolves.
{Biography}:
In short; Soren was one of the middle class angels, between a normal Angel and an Arch angel. Himself and his own wife trained the wolves for battle, preparing them for when their owners went down and fought any kind of battles. As of then?
Currently they didn’t need them, but of course the higher angels thought otherwise. It was a pretty peaceful life, until Lucifer came to them. Talking about rebelling against his own Father, their own Father. He didn’t love humans like He did, and both of them agreed.
They loved the life they had, but at the same time? It was mundane. It was something that both Soren and his wife didn’t want to be in. They wanted more, something interesting.
So they fell, rebelled against their own Father, and went to hell. Where they made a name for themselves. Lucifer, in a sense, let them all fight for their land, positions, and to gain power. He basically seemed as if he didn’t care at all, and when everything settled?
Soren made sure that his own castle was being built, since his wife and him fought to be as powerful as they could. While they established their land and position, they made sure that they kept it.
When their child was born? Rash choices were made, very rash. By the time that their daughter was born, they already changed, and to be honest? Most of the fallen had changed their ways drastically. Male heirs would lead, while their wives would be equal only if it called for it. Most of the time the equality piece was mainly relating towards the lords, while other demons treated their own wives or husbands like complete and utter shit.
Since they were so sure that they would get a male, they left, ditching the female and gaining the mindset that Sarah would never produce a male heir. So in turn? They let themselves die by the hands of neanderthals, just coming out of the ice age.
