Day 5/30 06.06.2024
Went to a festival with a friend today and had a great time! It was a bit small, not much to do aside from get food and get some of the collectable merchandise. We then went to a few local stores to get some things we both needed, and just hung out. It was a lot of fun, and made me feel a lot better mentally than I have since my graduation. I think I'll have to make more time for being around my friends, rather than just the people I'm volunteering for and trying to find work.

Day 5: Do you usually like art for its beauty or for its meaning? Or both?
I have to admit my love of art is spotty sometimes, people can't figure out why my favorite paintings are my favorite. My favorite of all time is "Saturn Devouring His Son" by Francisco Goya. When I was in Madrid with my mom I made us go to the Prado just so I could see that painting. It's a painting that's considered part of Goya's Black Paintings series, and is full of meaning while being very frightening to look at. I remember feeling like I was being watched by the painting as I stared at it, and like it was about to attack me. Along the way through the museum though I also saw "Workers on Strike in Vizcaya" and it nearly made me cry out in joy in the middle of the exhibit. It's a massive, beautiful realism painting in their contemporary art room. I don't think many people would say it's their favorite, the hall it was in was mostly empty, but I would go back to the museum just to see that painting again. I think I like art for meaning and beauty, but the definition of beauty is so flexible in my mind that with enough meaning behind it even the most objectively ugly piece of art could be made beautiful in my mind.

Inspired by @mainichi-nihongoal & @fluencylevelfrench I am going to take part in the #sixwordsadaychallenge! I will probably be doing more like six words a week but don't tell anyone...
I don't have a planned start/finish timeline, cos those never work for me and my busy schedule. So please enjoy them when I actually get to them (and maybe learn some vocab with me!).

The Freedom of Expression Ep 28 - Risk assessment of restarting events, German experiment.
K: Hi, Lets start this week's episode of The Freedom of Expression. Joe san, Tasai san, welcome....Oh, I forgot to say 'This is Dir en grey's Kaoru'.
J, T: Hahaha.
J: Well, say it now, haha.
K: No, well, Im always saying this, but the preparations to get this show started each time are so slow!
J, T: Hahaha.
K: I got here about 90mins ago!
J: Yeh, honestly for me, sorry about this, but I mistook the time and the day, I only noticed when I saw Tasai's LINE message.
T: I was thinking, 'this is not good'.
J: 'Joe san! We're all already here!' And I thought, 'Eh!?', and I rushed here in a panic. But they still weren't ready to start recording.
K: Seriously, they havn't ever got it all set up quickly and smoothly.
T: Thats right.
K: We're waiting for so long.
J: Yep, there's been a lot of waiting to get to this point. But we do have time to have a meeting about the theme.
K: Yeh, we do that. But why does it never work out properly? They only have to do the same thing every time. We're talking about this every third episode.
J: Yeh, and we record three at once, so its like every time, haha.
K: Hahaha
J: Yep, we start each recording session with this conversation every time. Its become famous already.
K: We are kinda grumbling a bit.
J: The viewers have no connection to this.
K: Well, anyway, for today...Joe san, could you please?
J: Yes, 1500 at a concert - risk assessment of event restarts in German experiment. With the reopening of music and sports events in mind, which have faced huge restrictions amidsts the spreading of Covid-19, German researchers conducted an experiment on the 22nd, analyzing the risk of infection at a real live concert. On this day, a team of researchers from Martin Luther University in Halle, Germany put on a concert by the singer Tim Bendzko in an indoor venue in Leipzig. 1500 people took part in the experiment. Masks and small size tracking devices were distributed to the audience, and their hands were applied with fluorescent gel before entering. This was to record areas of high contact within the venue, and identify where people are touching the most. Professor Gekle from the same university's medical department said, 'I want to be able to offer some means of making a reasonable decision as the whether or not events can be permitted. We need the means to predict how many people will be infected after events are reopened.' Three scenarios were tested: a pre-pandemic environment, a mid-pandemic/strengthened infection prevention environment, and a limited audience environment. The team will analyze the gathered data, and evaluate the success of the prevention methods using a mathematical model. They will announce their results within this year. Soo, this has finally gotten started.

J: Yes, in the end 1500 people took part in the experiment.
K: Didn't they say they wanted 4000 people?
J: Yeh, maybe they couldn't gather that many.
K: Yeh
J: Sounds like it.
T: I think so. It looks like the data is split into three parts. The first group is like at the start of the pandemic with everyone...
J: Everyone crammed in. Doing a live show in a packed space.
T: Yeh. The second group was testing the prevention measures, like using alcohol, with a certain amount of social distancing. And the third group was keeping a strict distance of 1.5 meters between each person, and making it perfectly spaced out. Then they could gather these three sets of data.
J: Yeh, I see. It looks like we could get some good guidelines out of this.
K: But if they say the results will be out within the year, thats still quite a way off, isnt' it?
J: Yeh, we may have to wait a bit, but as for big events in Japan, the government made an announcement on the 21st of this month (*Sep or Oct 2020*). They will continue with their 5000 upper limit of people allowed in indoor or outdoor facilities. As to why they will continue this, a govt. person had this to say in an article for Mainichi Shinbun. 'Experts are saying we have already passed the peak, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't extend the limit on spectator numbers. The rest of the world would never forgive us'. Germany is using this kind of scientific logic, but Japan is saying 'we won't change the 5000 people limit, because the world wouldn't forgive us'!
T: Yeh..
Kami: Can I say something? ..Um, I listened to the report, and I got distracted by the names of that singer and that professor, Tim Bendzko and Professor Gekle, so I didn't really listen to the rest.
T: Well, yeh, those names are pretty interesting to Japanese people.
Kami: So I wasn't listening much...but you said, 'The rest of the world wouldn't forgive us'..if they were to lift the limit on 5000 people?
J: Yes, yes. Not me, someone connected with the government said that.
Kami: Thats pretty amazing, isn't it? They won't lift the limit because the world would never forgive them?
J: Well, experts are saying we are past the peak, so..ordinarily, this would be a good time to lift the limit.
Kami: Even though experts say we are past the peak, the world would never forgive us, so we won't lift the limit...Japan is really keeping up with the trends, isn't it?
K: Its cute, right?
J: Yeah
Kami: Its great, isn't it?
J: Its like, we know the science, but we don't wanna get bullied!
Kami: Even I didn't think of this. Thank you very much for this.
J: Well, its a new discovery...
Kami: Yes, I started to really love Japan.
T: Its a politician's job to explain this type of thing properly tho.
Kami: I really love Japan now.
J: But this really isn't any kind of scientific logic.
K: But the rest of the world aren't doing live shows as much as Japan is...they can't can they?
J: Ahhh....yeah.
K: In that sense ???*2
J: Japan is always in this kinda grey zone. There's a lot of talk about this request for self-restraint, like what does it mean? Like, Can I? Can't I?
K: Nothing has been forbidden though, has it?
J: Yeh
K: Also, what was it? A kind of bike event that took place in North Carolina..
J: Yes, thousands of people attended. Events like that are happening in America. At the moment, there are no penalties for doing anything.
K: People are just not doing stuff by exercising self-restraint
J: Thats it.
K: So that means Japan hasn't even ???*3
J: Yeah.
K: No, well it depends how you say it! Didn't they have anything clearer to say?
J: It wasn't very scientific.
K: We've only spoken about Japan, but in Taiwan they are holding concerts with over 10, 000 people.
T: Thats amazing, isn't it?
K: Because they have a really low rate of infection right?
J: Yeah, they do.
T: This was on August 8th, right?
Kami: The world has forgiven them right?
J: Well, yeah.
T: Doesn't this photo have quite an impact?
K: Its great, isn't it? Its a packed live show.
J: It is. They are wearing masks, but there is no distance between them.
T: Its just like normal.
K: That means they've returned to daily life then? In Taiwan?
J: Well, I guess so.
K: I spoke about this before, but I wonder if they will do experiments on other areas of life, not just live shows. This German study is only looking at live shows, right? Other things...
T: For example, public transport?
K: Mmm
T: Public spaces, they could do the experiment with public transport and stuff.
Kami: If Japan conducted this kind of experiment, the world wouldn't forgive us, right?
J: Well, you might not even be able to gather participants.
K: Well, conversely it would be seen as raising the infection risk, if Japan did it.
T: Are you slightly envious when you look at this, Kaoru? The Taiwan live show? 10,000 people gathering like this..
K: Well, i mean, at our lives people aren't all sat down like this, so I'm not sure. It doesn't feel like authentically back to normal. Its great that so many people can be allowed in there though.

Kami: Was the food nice?
K: Emm, yeh, haha.

K: They wouldn't let us in.

K: Yeh, we wouldn't be allowed in.
J: Now we have this problem.

K: They're not allowing people in, thats why they can do big shows. Probably.
J: Yeh
K: Well, who knows when Japan, or even the rest of the world will be able to do live shows like this, but im interested to see what kind of results this experiment will produce.

Looking for Magical Doremi Wins Mainichi Film Award for Best Animation Film of 2020
It is confirmed today that Toei Animation's anime feature film Majo Minarai wo Sagashite (Looking for Witch Apprentices) / Looking for Magical Doremi won the Animation Film Award of the 75th Mainichi Film Awards, which was given to the best-animated feature film of the year 2020.
Mainichi Film Awards is one of the longest-running film competitions in Japan, and last year's winner in the category was Studio 4's Children of the Sea. The award ceremony will be held at Meguro Persimmon Hall in Tokyo on February 17.
The other nominees for this year's award included - Violet Evergarden the Movie, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train, Cider no You ni Kotoba ga Wakiagaru, Josee, the Tiger and the Fish, and Happy-Go-Lucky Days.
The 20th-anniversary film for the Ojamajo Doremi series was co-directed by the TV anime first season's series director Junichi Sato and Yu Kamatani (ONE PIECE STAMPEDE assistant director). It was released in 127 theaters in Japan on November 13, 2020, and has earned 240 million yen (about 2.31 million USD) from its domestic run. According to the film's website, it is still being shown in six theaters in Japan as of January 22.

¹ A decillion is the easiest English translation, but nayuta is a Buddhist loan termword that means “many, many” in Sanskrit, and “going around cycles” (輪廻って) is a roundabout of 輪廻 (rinne or Samsara, the endless cycle of death and rebirth Buddhists seek to break free from.)
² Tennyo can be translated as celestial angels as well, but they’re a concept borrowed from Chinese Buddhism so I went for an English phrase that was less loaded with Christian overtones.
³ Portmanteau of “catharsis” and “system”: a system of catharsis, so to speak.
⁴ The term used for bright light, koumyou, can refer to the light that radiates from a buddha.
⁵ ki SHOW TIME is actually a portmanteau of 吉祥 (kisshou, or “auspicious”) and SHOWTIME.
⁶ Hagoromo (“feathered / celestial robes”) are specifically tied to the heavenly nymphs mentioned previously.
⁷ Although as an expression 五臓六腑 may be thought of as a “heart’s core”, this phrase continues the traditional Asian references as it reflects the old Confucian understanding of human anatomy. The phrase is literally 五臓 (five viscera: liver, lungs, heart, kidney, spleen) and 六腑 (six entrails: stomach, large intestine, small intestine, gall bladder, bladder, and ‘heating organ’—a blend of the thorax and abdomen.)
⁸ Bliss here is ananda, another Buddhist loanword from Sanskrit that usually refers to the Buddha’s disciple but I couldn’t find any direct quotes to the individual so I chose to translate it as the emotion instead.
⁹ I’m 90% sure “top-class document days” is just a nonsensical pun (chouDOKYUU DOKYUU-mento) but choudokyuu originally referred to super-dreadnoughts (a superior type of battleship) so if anyone can spot a reference along those lines, feel free to let me know.
¹⁰ Shinra Banshou is another Buddhist idiom used to refer to the entire universe and nature.
¹¹ A “musical” twist on the philosophical concept of the Akashic records (the idea that every human act, thought, word, and knowledge in history is gathered somewhere in either a giant lifeforce or etheric plane.) “Akashic” is derived from the Sanskrit word Akasha, which in Buddhist terms refers to the “aether”.
¹² I might’ve added a few too many words here, but I was at a bit of a loss for how to translate kakai with context. The literal translation is the “lower bound”, or “lower world”, but it’s always used to our world (down here, as opposed to heaven above). As a result, it’s often translated as say, the realm of mortals, in contrast to heaven or hell.

T.M. Opera O, 2000 Japan Horse of the Year and Hall of Famer, passed away May 19 due to heart failure. The 22-year-old was at one time the all-time leading money earner worldwide.
T.M. Opera O was bred in Japan by Kineusu Bokujo. He was sired by the European Champion Opera House, and was out of the Blushing Groom mare Once Wed. His is a sibling to stakes-placed Channel Four, and multiple winners Victory March, Captain Cook, Shimano Beauty, and Togano Kotei. He was trained by Ichizo Iwamoto and owned by Masatsugu Takezono.
T.M. Opera O made one start as a juvenile, finishing second, but sustained an and injury to his left hind leg that kept him out of training for several months. After healing and returning to training, T.M. Opera O made a solid 10 starts as a sophomore, breaking his maiden and then winning the Yukiyanagi Sho and Gr.III Mainichi Hai. Despite a three-race winning streak, he was dismissed by bettors for the 1999 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2,000 Guineas); he won the race by a neck over Osumi Bright. That same year, he finished second in the Kikuka Sho (Japanese St. Leger) and third in the Tokyo Yushun (Japan Derby), and Arima Kinen. He was named Japan Champion 3-Year-Old Colt for 1999.
As a four year old in 2000, T.M. Opera O was undefeated in 8 starts. He won the Tenno Sho Spring, Hanshin Daishoten, Takarazuka Kinen, and Kyoto Daishoten. He then became only the third horse in Japanese racing history to win both the Tenno Sho Spring and Autumn when defeating Meisho Doto by 2 1/2 lengths. His seventh straight win came in the Japan Dirt Cup, a prestigious international race, which attracted several home and overseas competitors, including Fantastic Light for the United States and Stay Gold for Japan. T.M. Opera O surged late to win by a neck over rival Meisho Doto, with Fantastic Light a nose back in third. With the win, T.M. Opera O surpassed Cigar as the all-time leading money earner worldwide. His final win of the year came in the Arima Kinen, winning narrowly over Meisho Doto once again.
T.M. Opera O was unanimous in the voting for Japan Horse of the Year and Champion Older Horse of 2000.
T.M. Opera O’s five year old season was lackluster compared to his previous season, winning twice in seven starts, with three races resulting in third place finishes. His best race of the season was his repeat win in the Tenno Sho Spring, which again featured a win over Meisho Doto. Meisho Doto was eventually able to turn the tables on his rival, denying him a repeat win in the Takarazuka Kinen; it was Meisho Doto’s first victory against him in six outings. T.M. Opera O saw the winner’s circle for the final time after a brief layoff when he won the Kyoto Daishoten a second time. His final races included runner-up finishes in the Tenno Sho Autumn and Japan Cup, and he finished fifth in his final start, the Arima Kinen.
T.M. Opera O retired at the end of 2001 as the world's all-time leading money-earner. He won a grand total of 1,835,189,000 ¥ (US$16,200,337) during his career, with a record of 26: 14-6-3. He is surpassed in earnings only by Arrogate, and is followed behind by Gun Runner, California Chrome, and Japan’s Espoir City. He is now second on the highest earnings list of Japan, being surpassed by Kitasan Black last year as well.
T.M. Opera O was elected to the Japan Racing Hall of Fame in 2004.
T.M. Opera O was not a success as a stallion. His best progeny includes Gr.II winner T M Ace and stakes winners T M Yokado and Dynamic Grow.
Like the late Special Week, T.M. Opera O is a character in Uma Musume Pretty Derby, a Japanese Anime and video game based on thoroughbred racehorses.

Wonderful Works of Eiko Ishioka A true visionary visual artist Eiko Ishioka has created the most marvelous works of our time. She won Academy Award, Cannes Film Festival Award, Grammy and Tony nomination. Her breathtaking works as a costume designer in Brams Stoker’s Dracula and Cell were so remarkably brought the amazing visual for the films. "Like all great artists in the world, Eiko understands what's going on in other cultures besides her own, and by immersing herself in them; she is able to create works that are unique blends. Her work transcends boundaries on many levels, since she refuses to stick to one particular medium or set convention,”... Francis Ford Coppola. She also won some of the most prestigious art direction and graphic design awards in her native Japan. Eiko Ishioka was born in Tokyo, Japan, and studied design at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. In the 1960, as a graphic designer in the advertising department of major Japanese firms, she attracted national attention by her talent and spirit of innovation and won numerous prizes, including gold medal from the Tokyo Art Director Club and Mainichi Design Award. In the 70s she changed the landscape of advertising art in Japan by showing them thru mass media the transformation of society from a traditional culture into a modern global force. Eiko ‘s long list of credits includes 1985 Cannes Film Festival Award for Artistic Contribution for her production design of Paul Schrader’s film Mishima, a Tony Award nomination for the stage and costume design of the Broadway play "M. Butterfly," and a Grammy Award for the art work for Miles Davis’ "Tutu" album, to name just a few. Most recently, she brought her creative sensibilities to bear on the conservative opera world with her costume design for Richard Wagner’s "Ring Cycle," at the Netherlands National Opera. One of Eiko's most famous works is that of Cirque du Soleil Varekai. She also directed Bjork’s music video “Cocoon”. Her work is included in the permanent collection of museums throughout the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1992 she was selected to be a member of the New York Art Directors Club Hall of Fame.

There were 696 fans in attendance today, and there were fans at Ryogoku today for the sumo as well. Not exactly sure the purpose of a condition Red in Tokyo if events are still going to go on as before, even at limited capacity. This is the sort of thing that keeps the virus going, and I’d rather have no pro wrestling with fans than an active pandemic. The Tokyo city government apparently feels differently.
Which segues into this: yesterday, NJPW president Takami Ohbari and chairman Naoki Sugabayashi took place in a government meeting about the future of combat sports during COVID-19. This was run by former NJPW/AJPW wrestler and current Cabinet minister Hiroshi Hase* as well as DDT’s Sanshiro Takagi, AJPW’s Tsuyoki Fukuda & Satoshi Igarashi, STARDOM’s (another Bushiroad property) Rossy Ogawa, and members from other promotions and political parties. You can read the article here, although there aren’t very many tangible details or plans in the article. Mostly just a plan to make plans. Still, it seems Japan’s government is at least willing to discuss the issue. Unlike some governments I could mention.
* - I would be remiss if I did not mention here, that back in April, coincidental but concurrent with #SpeakingOut, Hiroshi Hase was one of several LDP legislators who were getting named as inappropriately interacting, including outright sexual harassment, with women at a program for survivors of assault, abuse, poverty, etc. You can read about this here or here. Keep in mind, this is not to do with his wrestling, and these are not dirtsheet articles, but from Mainichi and Asahi Shimbun, pretty respectable newspapers in Japan. As far as I can find, Hase nor any other of the LDP members named ever apologized for this incident, but I may not have found them just yet. [EDIT: The second link above states Hase apologized for causing discomfort to the women at the shelter, but denied the sexual harassment claims.] Regardless, this is pretty shitty, and really casts a pall on Hase’s legacy. I thought I had written about it at the time, but apparently I did not (mind you this was during peak lockdown and I wasn’t blogging much at the time); I definitely talked about it on one of the special lockdown podcasts I did, because we were going to review an old Hase v. Shinya Hashimoto IWGP title match and dropped it because of the scandal. Needless to say Hase’s rep in my eyes is pretty damaged, and until he makes right on this, I won’t be having many good things to say about him, either his wrestling or his work in the legislature.
The tour takes a break tomorrow, then resumes on Sunday, with World Tag League 2020 matches. There is also NJPW Strong tonight, continuing the Showdown cycle of shows with KENTA v. David Finlay Jr. as the main event.

Japan opts not to join U.S., others in rapping China for Hong Kong law

WASHINGTON (Kyodo) -- Japan has opted out of joining the United States, Britain and others in issuing a statement to condemn China for moving to impose a national security law on Hong Kong, apparently to avoid creating friction with Beijing, officials from countries involved said Saturday.
Tokyo's decision has been received with dismay by Washington among others, underscoring the difficult balancing act Japan faces in managing its relations with the United States, its key security ally, and China, its neighbor and the world's second-largest economy.
A further rise in tension between China and the United States over the Hong Kong issue could also complicate Japan's plan to receive Chinese President Xi Jinping as a state guest. No date has been set after the visit was postponed amid the coronavirus pandemic.
On May 28, when the Chinese parliament endorsed the decision to introduce the legislation, the United States, Britain, Australia and Canada issued a statement expressing their "deep concern" over the move and warned that it could "dramatically erode" Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy guaranteed under China's "one country, two systems" policy.
According to one of the officials, representatives of the Japanese government had been approached in a backroom to take part in the release of the statement, but rejected the offer.
"Japan was probably more focused on its relationship with China. But, to be frank, we were disappointed," the official said.
Japan, meanwhile, expressed its "serious concerns" about China's push to impose the law on Hong Kong during a press conference by top government spokesman Yoshihide Suga on May 28.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian strongly criticized the joint statement, telling a press conference on May 29 that "the unwarranted comments and accusations made by the relevant countries constitute a flagrant interference in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs."
He also issued a veiled warning to Tokyo to distance itself from the United States and European countries in dealing with sensitive issues, saying Beijing hopes "the Japanese side will create sound conditions and atmosphere" to realize Xi's visit to Japan

The United Kingdom, the U.S., Australia and Canada condemned China on May 28 for imposing a law that they said would threaten freedom and breach a 1984 Sino-British agreement on the autonomy of the former colony.
There was no immediate response to Reuters e-mail inquiries to Japan’s foreign ministry and the U.S. embassy in Tokyo. China’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Tokyo separately issued a statement May 28, the day China’s parliament approved the national security legislation, saying the nation was “seriously concerned” about the move, which observers fear could endanger Hong Kong’s special autonomy and freedoms.
Tokyo is in complicated position amid tension between China and the U.S. over the Hong Kong issue as Japan plans Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit, which was planned for early April but has been postponed because both have agreed to priorities to contain the virus outbreak.

Check Out Preview for "Encouragement of Climb" TV Anime 3rd Season ED Song by Aoi & Hinata
18 days prior to its TV premiere in Japan, the official website for the TV anime adaptation of Siro's mountaineering-themed manga Yama no Susume/Encouragement of Climb has started streaming a three-minute sound-only preview for "Irochigai no Tsubasa" (The Wings in Different Colors), the ED theme song for its upcoming third season. It is the fourth duet song by Yuka Iguchi (Aoi Yukimura) and Kana Asumi (Hinata Kuraue) for the anime series.
The two previosuly sang the theme song "Staccato Days" for the TV anime first season in 2013, the second OP song "Mainichi Koharu Biyori" for the second season in 2014, and the theme song "Omoide Creators" for the OVA Omoide Present in 2017. Along with the OP song "Chiheisen Stride" (Horizon Stride) by the anime's four main voice actresses: Iguchi, Asumi, Yoko Hikasa (Kaede Saito) and Yui Ogura (Kokona Aoba), the ED song's CD single will be released on July 27.
