'Tuza' is very much in its infancy but it’s vagina charm necklace sparked a meteoric rise for the Mexican artist, becoming a must-have item, sported by the likes of model Adwoa Aboah and photographer Petra Collins. How’d that come about? The vagina necklace was part of a collaboration Atala did with her “dear friend” Maiia Ruth Lee. Lee is a super talented New York-based artist and together they decided to make some charms for fun. Atala and Lee made a list of all the things that made their life in New York what it is. They brainstormed and asked their friends to chip in too. Pussy Magnet ‘Tuza’s’ first customer? Scout Willis. Willis was at a trade show two years ago when ‘Tuza’ was launched. She stopped to say “Hi” to Atala’s dog Lola, saw the jewellery and fell in love with the vagina necklace. After ‘Tuza’ launched Willis was extremely supportive – she was the one that showed it to Aboah. Longevity and sustainability is what makes ‘Tuza’ tick. In every aspect. The entire creative process entails research, research, research, looking to vintage pieces or ancient jewellery, why years ago people would wear certain things or make them like that. The technical process gets a lot of thought too. The jewellery is of the highest quality using precious metals, mainly silver and 14k gold plated silver based pieces. It’s fine jewellery, but more affordable. Collaborations is one of Atala’s favourite things to do.
