Youkai Sharehouse is like the Japanese Addams Family

My favorite Koshiba Fuka's drama after Tokusatsu Gagaga. Both dramas are fun to watch, with good mix of comedy and seriousness.

Her character is relatable as she's someone who is good natured and works hard but her efforts are not rewarded as she keeps struggling in love and work, that she believes herself to be cursed. She hit a breaking point and collapsed at a temple where the Yokai found her.

So you can imagine the chaos that ensues when she woke up in a house where the Yokai dwells. In the beginning, she thought it's just a nightmare but eventually realizes the truth but somehow grow comfortable being with them as they're not what she thought.

She grows very close to one in particular, who is like her big sister. She's overprotective and always worried about her wellbeing, causing the Yokai to intervene in her life when the situation calls for it, as they discover that humans are much more terrifying than Yokai.

Over time, she develops confidence in taking charge of her life, thanks to the support of the Yokai. However, her close relations with them also means that she's slowly turning into a Yokai herself, which explains her anger she's been accumulating throughout her life.

So ultimately, she has to decide on her life which would either turn her into a Yokai who cannot die or return as a human being.

What I also love about this show is that all the Yokai have their own backstories which are based on Japanese folklore and folktales, including the new ones which appears every episode. And I enjoy the story-telling and the traditional songs sang by one of the Yokai.

I love the wholesome family relationship they have looking out for her. They're like her parents and older siblings. The parents are wise and patient giving advice and telling stories, while the older sister and brother are more ruthless and unforgiving to those who hurt her.

The drama have two seasons and one movie. However, I only managed to watch the dramas as the movie is nowhere to be found.

An Incurable Case of Love (2020)

*An old entry in my journal from earlier this year when I handled my 'what i watch' journal manually. Although the review is brief and somewhat lacking in hindsight, I want this to be a part of my record here.*

This was such a pleasure to watch back in 2020, and it was equally a pleasure to watch it this year. I absolutely loved how it was the female lead pursuing the male lead and how the usual tropes were kinda turned upside down. My love goes for all the characters. While both Sakura and Tendou were annoying at times, Sakura with her over-the-top optimism and childish behaviour and Tendou with his tsundere nature, both of them managed to worm into my heart. The story line was really nice and I felt as though the relationships had a variety of different tropes and was hence refreshing to watch the side characters' stories.

I absolutely love how supportive the other characters are. It's cheesy. It may be a little cringe. But I will watch it over and over again as many times as I want. This is definitely my comfort series. Might even rewatch it again this year. It is a show that I watched and obsessed over with Tasha in 2020. It will always hold a special place in my heart.

An Incurable Case of Love: 1st Season (2020)

Plot premise:  Koi wa Tsuzuku yo Doko Made mo Sakura Nanase is a 22-year-old rookie nurse. She met Doctor Tendo Kairi several years ago and fell in love with him. To meet him again, she studied hard and became a nurse. After 5 years, she finally meets Tendo again, but he has a totally different personality than what she imagined. Tendo, who is 33-years-old, is commonly referred to as the "Devil" at work. He is a level-headed perfectionist and often makes biting remarks to doctors and nurses. Sakura works hard to receive recognition from Tendo and she also expresses her feelings honestly to him. Due to her persistence, Sakura becomes well known at the hospital and she picks up the nickname of the "Warrior-Chick".

± It's half-ridiculous and half-respectable. At the start, i'm just like "i hope you didn't waste 5 years just based on a chance encounter with a crush" and then "do the work properly first before chasing the romance." Thankfully they do and while she remains a dork and infatuated all the way through, there's growth and character development --for a lot of the characters actually. The words don't change but the dynamic does is definitely one of my favourite relationship tropes.

Is this how Japanese romance ideas really function? The two main with the Tendou siblings seem (at least at the beginning) so based on the idea on a pedestal rather than actual 3 dimensional people. Thankfully, again, growth.

They definitely cast Satoh Takeru properly as the prince :))) The kilig is real.

I love that they focused on the Cardiology and Pediatrics departments. While 10 episodes is a lot shorter than many an American hospital drama, it helps it feel more connected, especially with the patients, and definitely had me crying a couple of episodes just for the patients' subplots. Feels a lot less forced connection than New Amsterdam's push to be like House M.D. with a heart that effectively made their specializations feel meaningless.
