A healed visual vignette on my good friend Shala aka @miss_garagetroll ❤️ Shala was such a good sport about this tattoo- I basically BEGGED her to let me poke this design on her and she was, thankfully, amenable. Today I got to spend the day with a good friend-turned-client, @suehowie33 , who came down from Seattle to Oly to get poked and hang out with me. During our visit I took this year-healed picture of the first tattoo that I gave Sue. I still really love and am super proud of this piece, not only because of its ambitious size and aesthetic presentation, but also because it was one of the first larger sized pieces that I felt comfortable enough to freehand. There were no visual references I referred to, and no stencils involved- I just drew it on with a sharpie and then got to poking. I don't generally freehand many of my pieces for several reasons, the main one being this: because tattoos are not only permanent, by also incredibly meaningful to the client who wears them, I usually find that something so important and unalterable requires more time and careful thought than what I can scribble in 20 minutes. I can only speak for myself, of course, but I also find that the third or forth iteration of a concept that I am drawing is usually better looking and more nicely designed than the first draft. Here is a picture of the first tattoo I poked on my homie Randall aka @voodoorusty_man all the way back in February of this year! Funnily enough, Randall and I actually met on Tinder, a few months before I met and fell in love with my fiancé.
