Two New SUVs From Mahindra South Africa Showcased At The 2023 SA Auto Week
Held at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, Gauteng, the SA Auto Week is South Africa’s premier industry event. It offers vehicle manufacturers like Mahindra an opportunity to discuss issues facing the local and global industry while also showcasing its newest innovations and vehicles.
The two models on display, now available at Mahindra Midrand, the all-new Scorpio-N and XUV700, physically manifest the spirit of the brand at SAAW 23 where the industry celebrates its South African manufacturing capability and the high-tech new products that will spearhead its advances into a new era of motoring.
Both new Mahindra models bring a host of new technologies to a market used to more budget-focused options.
For instance, the Mahindra XUV700 offers features such as a 26 cm Superscreen that incorporates the digital dashboard and a host of entertainment features, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The infotainment system is connected to a 12-speaker 3D SONY sound system for the most immersive sound experience.
This model uses its array of cameras to offer a 360-degree view of the vehicle from inside, while also doubling up as a traffic camera while driving.
The Scorpio-N, in turn, brings real-world off-road capabilities to the adventure SUV segment with its 400 Nm turbodiesel engine and adaptive terrain response system that adjusts its operation based on the road conditions in the off-road capable Scorpio-N.
“Having laid a solid foundation over the past 19 years, we now shift gears and focus on expanding our range of Authentic SUVs and Authentic bakkies. This will not only help us to maintain the momentum that has made us the fastest-growing brand in 2022 but will also give us a varied product offering that will appeal to virtually all consumer groups,” says Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa.
With reference to the solid foundation that Mahindra has laid in South Africa, Rajesh mentions the recent investment in a new state-of-the-art warehouse in Linbro Park, Gauteng, and its growing network of dealers that currently stand at 74 showrooms covering all nine provinces and every major city and town - like our favourite Mahindra dealer in Midrand, Gauteng.
Speaking on the sidelines of the SA Auto Week, Rajesh also highlighted the significant investment in improving the Mahindra Assembly Facility at the Dube TradePort in KwaZulu-Natal.
The facility, which produced its first proudly South African Pik Up in 2018, has since been upgraded to include a comprehensive post-production testing track, a modern painting facility and a more streamlined production line.
With these upgrades, the assembly facility can produce in excess of 500 Pik Ups a month across the entire product range, from the entry-level Pik Up S4 Dropside to the coveted Pik Up Karoo Dusk, Dawn and Storm with their six-speed automatic transmissions.
“Our next step will be to introduce special edition models of the XUV300, Scorpio-N and Pik Up. The last mentioned will be expanded with the introduction of a single-cab Pik Up Karoo Dawn with a 4×4 drivetrain.
“We have also listened to the calls by Mahindra fans and will soon introduce a special Mahindra Scorpio-N Adventure Edition, complete with custom-built approach and departure bumpers, off-road focused tyres and suspension and a number of interior additions.
“Lastly, our range will soon include a Mahindra XUV300 XPREZ. This panel van version is custom-built for South Africa and will offer safe, cost-effective and reliable transport for businesses looking for a commercial vehicle in the sub-one-tonne market,” says Rajesh.

The Mahindra Scorpio S11 Isn't Just For Farming
Some of you will agree when I say we generally typecast people to cars. A yellow Kia Picanto, for instance, is likely something a member of the fairer sex would drive. Not that a man could not pull it off too.
When I visit Eldorado Park, I know I am in Polo and Golf territory. When I see a muddy single cab Toyota Hilux with thick bars at the back to carry livestock, I know a Van der Merwe from a farm is driving it. More than half the time I am correct.
I must have broken certain stereotypes when I recently had the Mahindra Scorpio S11 on a test. This iconic Indian brand has become synonymous with farmers for its strength and durability.
I undoubtedly surprised many people when they saw a Van der Oliphant emerging from this sport-utility vehicle, not fitting the perceived owner profile.
To be fair, its cousin, the Mahindra Pik Up, is the workhorse responsible for the farming associations. It continues to contribute immensely in the agricultural industry countrywide.
The brand also does compact offerings including the KUV100, KUV300 and TUV300. There is also the well-established XUV500, aimed at the loftier end.
The magic word for the Scorpio is affordability but that does not equal poor quality. Sure, it lacks the premium status enjoyed by pricier competitors but its toughness would petrify them stiff.
Inside, it uses sturdy plastics and coarse fabrics. Some effort has also been put into comfortability with semi-leather upholstery and foldable individual armrests in the front. A slot on the centre console keeps smartphones closer to the AUX and USB ports. Simple but convenient tech in the S11 includes a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and an HD reverse camera. It has a leather-trimmed steering wheel with satellite audio controls. Cruise control is included.
The Mahindra Scorpio is a smooth drive but wind intrusion can be felt when you hit 120km/h because of its boxy shape. It rides on stylish 17-inch alloy wheels. The seven-slat grille – bold and imposing – is complemented by a beefy bonnet scoop.
The wide-opening tailgate gives you easy access especially when you have to fold those seats to load luggage. While seating is for seven, front occupants get the best share of legroom.
Its 2.2-litre, four-cylinder mHawk turbocharged-diesel engine is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox with a claimed consumption of 7.2l/100km, producing 103kW and 280Nm.
The Mahindra Scorpio S11 six-speed manual 4x4 goes for R366,999 and R345,999 for the 4x2. A relative bargain for the amount of car you are getting. Unfortunately, there is no automatic version.
Although the brand has found its niche in the commercial field, you should not be surprised the next time you spot a Mahindra in the suburbs.

Mahindra's Scorpio Pik-Up- A Beast of a Workhorse
The Mahindra Scorpio Pik-Up is one vehicle I've always been keen to drive. When you see one in traffic there's always a smile on the face of the driver and I'd think to myself, “either they're just that nice to drive or just that affordable”.
So imagine my delight when Uwe Kessler, former Pupkewitz GWM dealer-principal, called and told me about his recent move over to Spes Bona Motor Company further along Independence Avenue. He now manages a showroom gleaming with Peugeots, Citroens and Mahindras.
After a short chat, I asked him what he was driving now and I can hear the smile stretch across his face as he replies “I have the new Mahindra Scorpio and it's unbelievable, you need to take it for drive sometime”. That next Monday morning I was there bright, early and eager. I was this worked up because not only am I in the market for a bakkie, but I've grown a massive respect and appreciation for the offerings coming out of China and India lately. With the poor majority not being able to buy imported cars, these nations have grown their own automotive industries and are putting out hardy, strong vehicles that the masses can afford.
As one of India's top 10 manufacturers, Mahindra has over 60 years experience building commercial vehicles and farm machinery. The group now sells cars, bakkies, tractors and farm equipment to every continent on earth – except Antarctica. Though with current trends in the weather, it should be a lovely warm holiday destination in the not too distant future.
It's worth remembering that Mahindra and Mahindra got their start in 1945, building a clone of the CJ2 Jeep that was even rougher and tougher than the Willys original.
The Scorpio Pik-Up embodies that spirit even today, but they have come along way in terms of refinement and quality since then.
I'm given the keys to a beautiful new Scorpio, with alloy wheels and trallies added the necessary attitude.
“We're currently running a no deposit deal, from N$3 150 a month and we include the rims, trallies and rubberising,” Kessler added as I snatch the keys out of his hand and head off to the nearest, highest mountain I could find.
Scorpio Pik-Ups come in single and double cabs, but share the same 2.2-litre Turbodiesel, for which the maker quotes 89kW and 290Nm at 1600rpm to 2800rpm, and a five-speed manual 'box driving the rear wheels. You can switch into 4x4 lower and higher ranges with a simple turn of a dial and then the limited slip diff will get involved and save you from embarrassing yourself at your next Vasbyt.
On the road it's suprisingly nimble and reminds one of wild animal waiting to be released back into the wild. Not that it's only meant for hard labour and overland treks, the Scorpio has had its interior revised to offer all the creature comforts you'll need when you decide that the fun's over and it's time to head back to the city.
It has neat, unfussy new headlights and a scoop on the bonnet which gives adds even more attitude to this tank/ old Land Cruiser inspiration. Standard are its steel rims with plastic covers, mud flaps, a one-piece roof liner with moulded-in holders for sunglasses and map pockets in the doors.
Power steering is standard on a steering column that adjusts for tilt but not reach. Though you do need to get a hang of piloting this bad boy around, it has impeccable road manners and the ride is solid and comfortable, even when tackling rocks, ruts and corrugated gravel surfaces. This I think would become even more comfortable if one used up some of the 1.2 ton payload the Scorpio Pik-Up can carry.
At 1880mm (H) x 1770m (W) x 5098mm (L), the Pik-Up is a sizeable beast. The large load bay however offers more then generous loading space as it is deeper and longer then most. Cabin space is a little tight in terms of legroom, but it comes with handy storage behind and under the seats and in the centre console, which they gave a carbon fibre look, for reasons only understood on the sub-continent.
The standard kit list includes a single CD tuner with MP3 and steering wheel-mounted remote controls and auxiliary audio input(s), cruise control, air conditioning, power windows, remote central locking, engine immobiliser, 12-volt power outlet and height adjustable headlamps.
They come with a three year 100 000 km warranty, three years/60 000km service plan and service agents all over the country.
If you're in the market for a capable bakkie and willing to look beyond the established brands, you'll find the Mahindra Scorpio Pik-Up ticks all your boxes with a well built, well specced package and a price that's hard to ignore. Pop into the Group 1 Mahindra dealership for more information or to book a test drive.
