Wonder if Cahir knew it was Vilgefortz who opened the secret magical door for them to enter the Aretuza courtyard. Might have been quite surprising (or even a shock) that the mage who almost had him executed was actually Emhyr's ally. There is the possibility, of course, that he knew about it from the start even before the Battle of Sodden Hill, but is that very likely? I'd say no. It seems though that Vilgefortz was already betraying them as he must have known Cirilla (in the show) was never inside the building. He himself left it before the fight started to search for her with the intention to capture her all by and for himself. So, having lied to them about where Cirilla is, it looks like he, very cunningly, used Cahir, Francesca and the Scoia'tael as an effective distraction as well as to destroy the Brotherhood while never intending for them to get the girl.
