Mags had never been one for sending letters or notes, but there was something about the quiet, steady pace of Esther’s life that made her feel like she needed to say something. It wasn’t that they had known each other for long, but there was a familiarity between them—a sense of shared understanding. Something about Esther’s hesitations, her quiet nature, spoke to Mags.
Mags had spent the morning putting together a small package. She hadn’t wanted to overdo it, just a few things that felt like they might be of use—a bundle of herbs she had dried herself, some candles for the darker nights, and a hand-written note. It wasn’t much, but she hoped it would be enough.
She found the path that led to the cemetery with a familiarity that made her heart ache a little, reminding her of the way things always seemed to become still when she needed them to. The cemetery stood on the edge of the town, a place where the earth held its own silent conversations. She didn’t hurry, letting the cool autumn air settle around her.
Once at the gates, Mags hesitated for only a moment. She had been there often enough in passing, but this time, it felt different. This time, she wasn’t just a visitor. This time, she was here with a small offering.
She made her way to the small, modest building where Esther worked, and before knocking, Mags allowed herself to wonder if she was being stupid. She sighed. Mags knocked softly, waiting. She didn’t have words ready. She never did. But she hoped that she wasn't overstepping.
