So I see some of y’all like writing silly little things about magpie thoughts and stuff. So imma join in.

Spoilers for Musings of a madman.

Marrow laid in a corner holding her pickaxe. She’s thinking about the fact that even if the rest of the flock cared oh so much about the fact that vast tried giving the zygote crystal to rune. All he thought about was the rest of the flock. She doesn’t care what would’ve happened to her. He didn’t think about it possibly being painful or the possibility of them dying again. Just the idea of being away from the flock that marrow had come to call a family. But that’s not what lingers on their mind as everyone is in the nest stargazing. What lingers on marrows mind is the idea that no one really would have noticed if she wasn’t there. They can hardly speak and aren’t often as active as the rest. And so as marrow slowly drifts away to a calm slumber looking at the rest of the flock in the nest they can’t help but wonder what it is that makes them still feel so welcome in the flock. It feels so undeserved to her.

writing patterns: first sentences

Here's the thing: I haven't written in YONKS (apart from a few ficlets/micros last year) so I have nothing new to share. I've done this meme before (four times!) so I'll share those posts for anyone curious to see the results and I'll add some musings at the end:

Musings

My first lines tend to be mostly declarative statements: starting in the middle of some action or other, occasionally having a sense of foreboding. About a third of the time I start with dialogue, and only one fic opens with setting (Shelter: Romania was a wild place, exuberant with secrets and magic.)

I said in post #4 that first lines can be "crucial and worth spending time on, but also, ultimately, not as important as we sometimes make it. The first line, imo, needs to lead into the story; it’s a door, nothing more, and no matter how gorgeous the door, if the place it leads into isn’t as amazing, then it will lead to disappointment."

It's funny perhaps, or simply indicative of the above sentiment, but one of my least favourite openers is the one for the fic I'm happiest with (9 ½ Days). I also struggled with beginning dirtynumbangelboy and I'm not, like, exuberantly happy about the first paragraph, but it is a fic that I'm super proud of, and I do think the opening matches the tone of the fic.

I'd say, having a great first line isn't always about a perfect sentence, but having a sentence that leads into the plot and gives an idea of the tone/mood/voice of the story to come. Which sounds easier than it actually is.

I've often thought about a challenge or game I'd love to do: come up with a first line (or even take a famous one), get a bunch of authors who are interested, and we'll each write a fic starting with that line. I think it'd be fascinating to see how authors can take their stories from the exact same start into wildly different directions.

Bri's ability to transform others (and herself) was a learning process. It's pretty evident in her older birds, as many of them have subtle quirks or distinct differences that aren't found in the average murkrow. For instance, the Murkrow she calls 'Red' was given that name due to her odd reddish-black feathers, rather than blue-ish black feathers. She's not shiny - shiny have iridescent purple feathers. But it's enough of a color difference to draw the eye and be noticeable. This was due to lack of a strict grasp on keeping the transformations uniform, as when Red was human, she always wore a red cloak - the obvious visual quirk carried over into her Murkrow form. Meanwhile, the 'Woodsman', caught around the same timeframe as Red, has a sharper, quasi-metallic quality to his feathers. One would assume this is due to Corviknight in his heritage, though that's impossible in truth since he was human. It was instead caused by his personality and gruff demeanor influencing his transformation. Her later Murkrow are less obvious - usually very subtle stripes and patterns, or variations of blue-black feathering. Not enough to actively tell them apart in a crowd, unless one is taking time to observe individuals. So... it's actually reasonable to say that Bri's own transformation into a Murkrow follows these same quirks. Sure, her 'normal' transformation looks like a stock standard average murkrow... because that's what she's aiming for. She's purposefully trying to not stand out, and to hide amidst a crowd. It's safe to say that if she let instinct guide the power and let her transformed state reflect her inner self, then there's a good chance her 'natural' physical appearance that is actually a magpie coloration. Who knows, maybe it's a variant.

maybe to continue the serialized nature you could possibly make a post with a mass like bulk art dump to "catch us up" so to speak bc tumblr allows more pictures than twt (10-30 i think) and then continue the serialized posting alongside with twitter every update day...? or don't do that lolll, i think starting to post here along with twitter would also be just as fun for us and we will enjoy the same waiting game/updating nature :) exciting!!!!!

(i actually moved a comic i'd started on twitter here too, and went with a couple bulk quote unquote "lore/background" posts which work pretty well on tumblr as opposed to twitter i think just to get everyone on here to the same speed and bc ppl tend to not want to spam reblog for the creators sake so i just bunched it all together :0) sorry if this is presumptuous or anything!!! i love your art sm <3

that's not a bad idea!!! i think my hold up rn is that i don't quite liiike some of the old panels and am dying to update them before i mass post them elsewhere, but can't find the time to do so djldsjfad. my style variation is very obvious when everything is compiled together unfortunately!
