Beefleaf idea AU: He Xuan is a merman. Legends say that Merman's blood, mixed by a scale crusher in powder, can heal any sickness in few weeks.

Shi Wudu is a merchant who travels a lot one the sea. He learns about this legend and knows it could be the only chance for him to save his baby brother who suffer of very bad health since he's a little boy.

Shi Qingxuan is a delicate and frail young man. He lives in a manor on the mountain, near of a lake. Because montain's fresh air is good for the health. And it's peaceful. But he's often bedridden because his health is bad and he's often sick. He read of lot, does calligraphy and, music and paints a lot. When he's good, he loves to spent time in the garden, of walking on the lake's bank. He loves legends and believe in magical creatures's existence.

At first, Shi Wudu didn't believe in magical creatures's existence. Because why believe in creatures that nobody has never seen? Except in mermaids and mermen, because people HAVE seen them. And he has seen some, from far away. And it's here that he learns the existence of a potion: a mix of sirens blood with the powder of their scales and three plants (easy to find). This potion can heal anything, whatever it's a sickness, a bad health or even a curse. In few weeks. But the text mention that the siren 1) must be the same gender that the sick person 2) must be alive until the end of the treatment and after. If the siren is killed, the potion will turn from "healing potion" to curse even worse that what the patient had at first.

So he sets a trap. But kidnaps only a little mermaid. A child. It's not good. She's clearly too young to survive the capture and it's a girl. But them a young merman attacks the net to freed the little mermaid. Wudu takes her as hostage and force the merman to let himself being captured in exchange of the little one's freedom. It's violent, cruel and he doesn't care about the merman's feelings or fear. But he let the little mermaid go as soon the merman is tied up and unable to escape on his boat.

The merman is throw in the hold of the boat, in a narrow basin where he cannot even move. He's terrified but at least his little sister is fine and free. He's treated like a animal by all the crew.

He's bring back on the Shi Manor in the mountain, far away of the sea. He's half-death when they arrive to the manor because 1) not enough water 2) barely enough food

Shi Wudu had amenaged a pond in a greenhouse (he had planned that since a while). So the mermen would have water and light. And some plants to color his existence.

the pound is big, but for a mermen, it's not that much. (exemple: it's big like a piscine for us)

He Xuan is scared, is angry, but helpless. Every day, he's pulled out of the water by force, a little blood is taken from him (also by force) and a scale is torn off (not gently). His anger grows every day, but they're stronger than him. When he tries to fight back, he's punished or deprived of food. He knows what they want and why. And he's so angry to be treated like a animal, that nobody cares about what he feels.

Meanwhile, Shi Qingxuan is given a new medicine and starts to get better. He starts to feel stronger, healthier. One day, after two weeks of treatement, he decides to look at this new greenhouse where his brother forbid him to go.

He picks the door lock to enter. And sees the big water basin. He comes close, but not too much (he never learned to swim). and something get out of water.

A merman.

Shi Qingxuan understands what his brother did but it's too late, he's almost totally healed. The only thing that he knows is that his brother will not kill the poor merman because then he would be cursed. But who know what he kill do then. Keeping him like a pet? turning him into a attraction to win money?

He decides to bring more food to the merman. And decides that he'll ask his brother to freed him when the treatment will be over.

Shi Wudu refuses because the risk, even little, of the merman could die exist. And if he dies, his brother will suffer of consequence.

He forbid Qingxuan to come close of the merman but Qingxuan doesn't listen to him and go to see the merman everyday. brings him food and presents. He tries to speak with him.

At first He Xuan refuses to accept the gifts or to answer. Because it may be a trap. And he's not a pet. He feels that this young man was the person who needed the potion. But he looks so innocent, he apologizes again and again.

Qingxuan knows they're too fay away of the sea. But they're near of the lake. Mermaids and Mermen can live in any sort of water.

So, as soon, his treatement is finished and that his brother doesn't guard the mermen as seriously than before, Qingxuan takes the mermen in his ams (and almost drowing) and let him go in the lake.

The lake is like another prison but it's lot better, he can't be tortured again or sold or treated like a exotic pet.

Qingxuan continue to go to lake's bank. and little to little the mermen come to see him.

What people doesn't know is that, under some very RARE circonstances, the potion can also give the power to transform into mermen. It's so rare that nobody had heard of it before and it was even a legend for the sirens.

Except it's not.

2022 Writing Roundup

2022 was a rough year. Rougher than 2020 but not quite as rough as 2021. I wrote 100,035 words, give or take a few. I finished a fic today that isn't here because it's not beta read yet. No worries, it will show up here next year.

I kicked off the year with some 3zun BDSM AU, wrote some Beefleaf in there, and ended it with some Critical Role RPF I wrote to raise money for my friend Ryn!

@aeondeug: It'd be weird to say Zhu/Ma isn't femslash to me. Zhu's a lesbian, just a nonbinary one. Beefleaf is getting into what I would consider more controversial territory in regards to whether or not it is femslash but honestly I'd be willing to accept that as femslash too? Especially depending on how the genderswapping magic is handled. But I will admit that my being willing to accept Beefleaf as femslash is partly because I'm bigender and thus I have A Very Particular Outlook. And again I'd be picky about how it was handled. But like it is very much a thing I would enjoy seeing.

Yeah, I'd personally say any definition of femslash that was ""strict"" enough to not include Zhu/Ma would be weird and not necessarily a particularly useful definition?

Personally, for the purposes of "would I write it for femslash february?" I'd say beefleaf would count if their genders like, came up in the fic? eg "they'd never use these terms, but it's important to the fic that Shi Qingxuan is trans femme*, and He Xuan is none gender with left girl."

Femslash February Plans

I'm thinking of what I'm going to do for Femslash February.

There's two options:

Option #1: The Sensible One

If I go with this option, I know exactly what I'm going to do. The downside is that the thing is hard.

I have this original f/f novel I'm working on. It's in the second draft, a word which here means "a bunch of the scenes are missing, but all of them are outlined, and I know which ones." I could aim to, by the end of February, have

all the scenes written

in nice cleaned up prose where all people and locations have names

so I can send it to my beloved and long suffering beta to be told what exactly is wrong with it

Option #2: Let's Live A Little!

Along with working on the novel (I like to work on multiple projects at once), I make some smaller fics/ fanart/ podfics, maybe? I might aim for either four (one a week) or seven (like those fandom weeks of old.)

The main problem is that I am kind of Blanking On Actionable Ideas. ("Karlach is cool!" "Right, but you haven't finished the game, and anyway, who would you be shipping her with?" " uhhhhhhhhhhhhh..." or "Double Life Cleo slash Pearl!" "Great, you have two characters, and from a thing you have finished! Do you have a plot?" "ah. hm. hmmmmmmm." )

A secondary problem is that I would need to come up with a workable definition of femslash, at least for myself. On the great Cartesian plane with the axes of "Woman" and "Canon," I must decide where I land between the points of "both characters should straightforwardly be women canonically," "Zhu Chongba is non-binary, but they're a nonbinary lesbian, so it would be strange to say Zhu Chongba/Ma Xiuying isn't femslash?" "should I just be able to make a canonically supported argument that both characters aren't ~solely men? (or: is beefleaf femslash????)" and "are genderbends valid if the character being a woman is important to the fic?"

At the moment I'm leaning towards something along the lines of "Zhu Chongba/Ma Xiuying is on the correct side of the Femslash Line on account of everyone being lesbians" but am very torn about whether to allow genderbends. On the one hand, there is the thing where "can we please focus on the canonical women for one second without going 'he's my babygirl. my silly rabbit'?" On the other: I am a huge sucker both for trans readings of characters, and also looking at how characters would read very differently if they are women.

(Advice/opinions/votes/encouragement etc are all welcomed.)

I have indeed been posting about several very pretty pairings.  Because I have no self control! *finger guns*  But! because I have no self control and I don’t mind being a search engine, I can definitely give you a hand.

The pairings should primarily be from mo doa zu shi and tian guan ci fu; scum villain probably only started showing up a day or two ago.  These links are to my tags; the later links will be to good sites for the novels. I don’t have good sites for anything else because I’m a very low-profile p*rate

Before I get too far into anything, the quick and dirty of cultivation is: martial arts + meditation/daoism? = magic powers.  These magic powers are then typically put to use fighting evil supernatural powers.  As a character���s cultivation improves, their power level increases and they can become immortal or even gods.  All of this in the general but vague context of ancient china.  

This summary is brought to you after flailing about in an entirely new-to-me cultural backdrop for the past 2ish months.  Now, back to the pretty boys.

mo doa zu shi, or The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation or The Founder of Diabolism, follows Wei WuXian (goth) who has been brought back to life and Lan WangJi (angelic) who has no intention of losing his high school crush a second time as they solve mysteries.  More of a low to mid fantasy, there is a large focus on the various sects or factions and the diplomatics between them.  Originally a chinese web novel, it also has a manhua/manga adaptation, a donghua/anime adaptation and a drama adaptation.  The novel, manhua and donghua all go by the above names but the drama goes by The Untamed.  It’s on netflix.  Very good.  Everyone loves the bunnies.  Be prepared for feels.  Including feels for a corpse.

tian guan ci fu, or Heaven Official’s Blessing, follows Xie Lian (angelic), a disgraced heavenly official who has been wandering the world for 800 years, who ascends to heaven (for the 3rd time) and Hua Cheng (goth), a great ghost king and scourge of the heavens, as they fall in love and tear down the government.  Definitely would be high fantasy, the characters are primarily gods or ghosts.  As soon as you get over the fact that the becoming a god/ascending to heaven that everyone aspires to essentially means they become a bureaucrat for all of eternity, it makes perfect sense.  Actually, it really is more accessible than mdzs in terms of needed background knowledge; it explains itself quite well.  Glancing through my tag, there’s a bit more variety to it.  Many characters are very fun.  The other pairing that shows up rather often is colloquially known as beefleaf;  Shi QuanXuan (angelic), a super peppy cinnamon roll, and Ming Yi (goth) who reluctantly cross-dresses* with them.  (*does it still count as cross-dressing if no one has a corporeal body anymore and occasionally decide I’m going to be x gender today?)  Anyway, this is also originally a chinese web novel.  Both are by the same author.  There is a recently started manhua adaptation that is very lovely and a donghua adaptation should be starting later this year.  SUPER soft.  Intense but doesn’t take itself too seriously.  Great cast of characters.

Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System is the third, or rather the first, novel by this same author.  This one requires a little bit more trope/genre awareness but it’s well done and has good translations so that makes it a nice place to get into the trope if you’re looking for one.  This is a transmigration story.  The premise of transmigration is (or at least seems to be) that a person dies but, instead of dying, they wake up somewhere else as someone else.  The particular brand of transmigration found in scum villain is the waking up as a character of a book that is destined to die.  Then the story becomes how the transmigrated person changes the character’s relationships and interactions and what the repercussions of those changes are.  Here, Shen QingQiu (angelic) transmigrates to become the teacher of Luo BingHe (goth), the protagonist who just wants to love his teacher but all of his advances end up interpreted as death threats.  The other angelic/goth pairing you’re most likely to see here is Shang QingHua/Mo BeiJun but I have not yet gotten far enough to give them a proper comment.  From what I understand, there were once plans for all sorts of adaptations but they are all cancelled or on indefinited hiatus.  Very campy.  Very trope-y.  Has never heard of the 4th wall.  Very funny.

Psychic Princess - manhua/donghua; m/f; girl gets married in place of her sister thanks to a loop hole, proceeds to make friends with all the spirits in her new home; historical supernatural

The King’s Avatar - novel/manhua/donghua/drama; I believe there is some endgame m/f in the novel, none as of yet in the donghua, can’t speak to the rest; who doesn’t want to watch the world get beat up by some guy with an umbrella; modern day + online games

The Emperor’s Strategy - novel/donghua; m/m; emperor asks a lord what he wants as a reward for a service rendered, lord replies “you”; half historical half mid fantasy

Everyday the Protagonist Wants to Catch Me - novel; m/m; very similar to scum villain

Let Me Tease You - novel; m/m; not quite as similar to scum villain

Imperial Doctor Belongs to the Princess - novel; f/f; most promising looking f/f I’ve come across but it’s not very translated T^T

Mistress, I was Wrong - novel; f/f; could be interesting but also not very translated

Lone Swan - manhua; m/m; kinda like mdzs except with puppets instead of corpses; very pretty like the tgcf manhua
