NA contemporary fantasy

in a world with witches - most of whom have random insignificant powers - one per generation is the Zaro, the magical leader with almost endless power, until the power was born into two people

Claire is perfectly happy being a stage magician, pretending to be a normal witch, while the other is raised to be the next Zaro - but when he casts a spell to stop death (entirely, in the worst kind of way) to ‘protect her’ she has to get involved

#The Day Death Stopped #Rebecca Thorne #I enjoyed this!#I wanna say the stylisation of the narrative isn’t quite at the level of quirkiness to for me to not notice the somewhat flimsiness of the #magic/worldbuilding - like it’s very clear it’s supposed to be a somewhat silly precedent but i got a bit distracted thinking about the #implications of things #also felt like the jumping around and pacing and backstory bits got a bit too jumbly in the middle #it could have been a bit more succinct in some areas of the narrative?#also feel like the characters being a bit older would have helped with the stylisation?#it was fun tho!#asexual books #(mostly briefly mentioned; MC and kinda-antagonist are exes but on her end it's mostly platonic for most of the narrative & end)#also ooh the thing about her brother made me feel an emotion #aroaessidhe 2023 reads
