seeing so many people talk about how toriyama inspired them creatively, or how his art was the beginning of their own art or story-telling journeys really just struck me with this profound sense of loss, and also gratitude for the creative minds his work birthed. dragon quest set itself apart from other jrpgs at the time (and even now honestly) by never forgetting the whimsical aspect of fantasy stories with his silly and adorable character designs.

never forget that the slime went from a mostly formless blob to the iconic little waterdrop-shaped friend that dominates the isekai genre today. that time I got reincarnated into a slime, campfire cooking in another world, the amount of stories that all revolve around the core concept of the slime being this weak and adorable starting enemy is endless at this point, and it all came from toriyama decided to add a little silliness to what was essentially a monster players would encounter upon starting up dragon quest with no experience or strength.

even dr slump, as niche as it is outside of japan, inspired a generation of mangaka and brought us the powerhouses we love today. oda started out drawing arale. the creator of one piece started out with fan art of a gag series, and drew the main character so much that even all these years later he can draw her from memory. dr. stone, a manga about humanity rebuilding after thousands of years, featured dragon ball as one of the series that persisted through humanity’s collapse and a symbol of hope.

outside of japan, one of the most important concepts in steven universe, the fusion of two or more characters through a silly dance, is directly inspired by fusion in dbz. even shows not directly inspired by dbz, when the subject of anime was involved, always used it and goku’s super saiyan transformation as a template for what anime was. toriyama’s influence really changed the creative landscape forever, and me waxing poetic or listing examples really can’t cover even a sliver of what he did.

i became a fan around the time super broly released, utterly wowed by the movie’s animation and the lovable character design of the titular character broly. and as i watched and played more of his works from dragon ball to chrono trigger, i found myself falling in love over and over again with the fun and wild character designs. he clearly loved what he did and the work he put out, and you can really feel it in how alive his covers feel. characters on overcomplicated mechas or vehicles, characters riding dinosaurs, even characters in lush and overgrown landscapes. he just loved drawing, and that love really touched me and pushed me to try drawing again after years of disinterest. I don’t know what else to say other than thank you, for the making the world you wanted to make, and giving the push everyone around you needed to make their own worlds and stories. i truly hope you rest in peace.

When All Hope Seemed Lost

Beerus was angrily tapping his finger on the table as Future Trunks and Mai explained the whole situation to him . And that's how this all started sighed Trunks . Beerus was silent for a minute before he spoke . I can't hardly believe what I just heard you mean that all of this is your damn fault ? Beerus asked angrily . Meanwhile on a small little island out in the middle of nowhere in the middle of an ocean Master Roshi and Fourtain teller Babba was trying to find the little pink rice cooker better known as the enchantment box so that The Z Fighters could use The Mafuba . Oolong was moving some old boxes around in the attic when Videl screamed . End of part ten

yamcha deserves a loving family with kids he can dote on. Look at him. he's one of the few characters in dbz who would absolutely crush it as a dad and deserves it <3

he even says in canon he'd like to start a family one day and the fact that hes still single and stuck in the hell that is perpetual yearning for what his friends have is just cruel :(

everyone’s already pointed out how videl’s character went down the drain as soon as she lost to spopovich, but i just have to say it - videl’s housewife era personality is so. baffling?

from the beginning she was characterized as a tough, no-nonsense girl who is, admittedly, kind of a asshole. she was barely even civil to chi chi after just meeting her, and its implied during the after-training lunch right after that her attitude is partly obliviousness due to being sheltered and showered with praise her whole life. (important to note tho: unlike her dad she works for all the adoration she receives, and its clear from her flying lessons that she shares vegeta’s training principles: “i will get better, even if it kills me”)

what made her so unique and interesting as a character is completely stripped away as soon as gohan saves her, and from then on she’s just gohan’s love interest who is supportive and caring, which is. not really the case for them?

videl is a very flawed character, but shes surprisingly consistent up until the mjb saga goes into full swing. this is more obvious in the anime where they flesh her out with filler, but videl isnt a pure-hearted, all loving woman. she’s a person who wants to do right by others, but is incredibly prideful and retaliates to even the mildest of slights against her with extreme prejudice. she’s willing to be petty if it gets her what she wants, but even then she has her own rules and morals she will never bend for anyone. ultimately, videl is someone who plays by her own rules and doesnt give a damn what anyone thinks of her

tldr; videl and gohan should share more in common with goku and vegeta than they do with android 18 and krillin

still so pissed off over how they fucked over gas. like, they set up parallels between him and goku - even outright said it in the text that elec is a lot like canon raditz in that he only wanted his younger sibling around to act as a meat shield to protect himself, and that he’d only get tossed aside once he outlived his usefulness - yet they still fucking disintegrated his ass anyway!! he’s has almost the exact same set up as tien, but instead of getting a chance to break away from someone who used him his entire life, he dies in despair after getting abandoned by the one person he trusted. ok.

don't think this can be called a feminism win but its funny how the two wlw couples are shown to be relatively healthy and functioning relationships and in the case of caulikale is literally the best hope universe 6 has for survival after hit's defeat.
