seeing so many people talk about how toriyama inspired them creatively, or how his art was the beginning of their own art or story-telling journeys really just struck me with this profound sense of loss, and also gratitude for the creative minds his work birthed. dragon quest set itself apart from other jrpgs at the time (and even now honestly) by never forgetting the whimsical aspect of fantasy stories with his silly and adorable character designs.

never forget that the slime went from a mostly formless blob to the iconic little waterdrop-shaped friend that dominates the isekai genre today. that time I got reincarnated into a slime, campfire cooking in another world, the amount of stories that all revolve around the core concept of the slime being this weak and adorable starting enemy is endless at this point, and it all came from toriyama decided to add a little silliness to what was essentially a monster players would encounter upon starting up dragon quest with no experience or strength.

even dr slump, as niche as it is outside of japan, inspired a generation of mangaka and brought us the powerhouses we love today. oda started out drawing arale. the creator of one piece started out with fan art of a gag series, and drew the main character so much that even all these years later he can draw her from memory. dr. stone, a manga about humanity rebuilding after thousands of years, featured dragon ball as one of the series that persisted through humanity’s collapse and a symbol of hope.

outside of japan, one of the most important concepts in steven universe, the fusion of two or more characters through a silly dance, is directly inspired by fusion in dbz. even shows not directly inspired by dbz, when the subject of anime was involved, always used it and goku’s super saiyan transformation as a template for what anime was. toriyama’s influence really changed the creative landscape forever, and me waxing poetic or listing examples really can’t cover even a sliver of what he did.

i became a fan around the time super broly released, utterly wowed by the movie’s animation and the lovable character design of the titular character broly. and as i watched and played more of his works from dragon ball to chrono trigger, i found myself falling in love over and over again with the fun and wild character designs. he clearly loved what he did and the work he put out, and you can really feel it in how alive his covers feel. characters on overcomplicated mechas or vehicles, characters riding dinosaurs, even characters in lush and overgrown landscapes. he just loved drawing, and that love really touched me and pushed me to try drawing again after years of disinterest. I don’t know what else to say other than thank you, for the making the world you wanted to make, and giving the push everyone around you needed to make their own worlds and stories. i truly hope you rest in peace.

EPISODE 20: MAXIMUM

Sooo... What now?

So, the battle between a fully grown Super Saiyan 4 Goku and Gomah commences! Pretty standard spectacle for a Dragon Ball fight with this much power on display, almost makes you forget that this is all just a distraction to create an opening for Piccolo.

Also, what is with Dragon Ball and creating trippy underground fight areas- giving Broly vibes. And I suppose the big meatier hands on SSJ4 are so he can hit harder??

With all the overlong screaming, I was absolutely cursing hoping that he didn't canonize Super Saiyan 5. But, it was just something showy to set up his next Kamehameha- one that shoots a straight clean King Piccolo gut shot through Gomah and shatters through every layer of the Demon Realm, because of course it does. The Second World ocean ecosystem is in SHAMBLES.

Now's Piccolo's chance to strike, I'm about to lose it because this is the silliest way to top off something so flashy. But, Gomah catches him before the third strike. He's seen through their master plan. Tightening up his loosened third eye, he flexes an even greater burst of power...

With Kuu ending up behind him and giving him three boops on the back of the head with the book. Before we can cut into our peaceful happy times with more final battle, our silly little boy has saved the day. The eye pops out and Glorio defeats it with a satisfying squish.

AND KUU GETS PROPER RESPECT

Gomah is forced to pay for his crimes by being banished to Arinsu's Mafuba Bong for 99 years instead of 100 because at the very least he didn't try to kill Dende. And Degesu's tagging along for company. At least they'll have board games!

Wait, does Degesu have to stay the full 100 because he did try to kill Dende?

They open the jar 99 years later and they're making out- hey, a girl can dream, can't she?

However, they need a new king to rule the realm because the last thing they need is anarchy. They suppose it should go to whoever defeated the last king, meaning the honor goes to our boy Kuu!!

I had seen some images of Kuu with that white cape and thought maybe it was some sort of beta element that got scrapped- it was from the finale all along!

Kuu, being a great judge of character, appoints Arinsu as his Vice King and several other characters as ministers- I was waiting for him to, after the minister appointment spree, just lean in towards Arinsu and whisper "hey, what does a minister do?"

Sadly, Hybis misses his chance and the Dragon Gang needs to go home, so they have to decline (which Goku does oddly bluntly).

We're achieving bliss in the Demon Realm! Prosperity in the age of Kuu! The barrier's down, which improves the air quality in the third world.

Neva offers Dende the opportunity to stay in the Demon Realm, but we can't go full GT and get rid of the titular Dragon Balls, so he's coming home too. However, there's some nomadic Namekians he knows that may feel at home there... did not all of them get to New Namek?

Bulma gets her whole stash of Majilite, meaning they can come and visit whenever they like! Win! Goodbyes are only for now!

Turns out Super Saiyan 4 was something Goku was working on secretly (seriously how long has it been since Buu Saga?) and I guess Neva helped him harness it the rest of the way or some other ass-pully reason. Also confirmation that it's not leading into Super because it's not Demon Realm exclusive or something.

Vegeta says what we're all thinking- it's a bargain sale on Super Saiyans! However, he insists his Super Saiyan 3 is a completely different "Ultra Vegeta 1"- better change your product names, Bandai!

As we journey home, we get a nice little credits montage. Roshi's night on the town is ruined, Chi-Chi's gotten too used to the step stool, Goten and Trunks can finally enjoy their new hoverboards (which is unusual given they can already fly), and Gomah and Degesu are imprisoned in a domestic fluff fic (Gomah Degesu only one bed???).

Before we come to a close, Goku sees Bulma fussing over her skin, so, backsliding on his progress of pronouncing Glorio's name correctly, asks if they can make a detour for the Medi Bug shop. The Senzu Bean supply isn't doing well either, so they might as well have back ups in case Goku's Villain Magnet reactivates.

Bulma proceeds to take their entire stock of the skin rejuvenation bugs when Panzy notices a dusty old jar hidden in the back. Two more Tertian Oculus eyeballs! Turns out they were for sale all along, but only one was ever purchased. It was the third eye in two ways! It becomes the wearers third and it was one of three produced.

And that's Dragon Ball Daima!! It's finally come to an end and the content drought, sadly, resumes. It went by so fast as the shortest Dragon Ball series on record. It made me squeal at some times, other times it made me sigh deeply or want to pull out my hair. But, ultimately, is any Dragon Ball perfect? No. Does that stop me from enjoying the ride? No.

The conclusion definitely had those comedic hints that remind me that Toriyama's roots were in gag manga- it was definitely a very Toriyama way to end it and I couldn't be happier with that.

Arigato, Toriyama-sensei... Thanks for the journey.

been doing some studies on og dragon ball panels to figure out how to use screentone and its crazy to realize toriyama only used some during important moments/special chapters, which is. insane?

i never realized he only added shadows as emphasis to big action panels, which is ingenius thinking about it, really makes the panel pop and the action feel more grand.
