If you stand very still in the forest you might see movement through the undergrowth. Mice will scamper over the path, deer wander, birds flutter And in the hours of twilight, if you're very lucky, you will find a fox. Madra rua, sionnach, they have many names but none seem to fully fit. But if you stand very still, one might approach you.

She had forgotten how much his voice carried in a room.

“How was your expedition, mo draoi?”

Tríona hummed, realizing that he was definitely internally pouting if he was calling her that now (where that had been a thinly veiled pet name, once upon a time, only to be replaced by mo ghrá the minute they aired a few truths). “It was educational. I will have to take the time to format my notes into something more formal, but I won’t do that now.”

“Why not? Get all your work done with, madra rua.” His voice wasn’t far off from his usual register, but there was a tightness to it that she could see reflected in his jaw that hinted that that was the opposite of what he wanted her to do.

Instead, Tríona crossed the distance between them in his room, closing the door behind her. She left her notebooks on his table (careful to not disturb any of his flags and what not sprinkled on the map) and then she leaned against the chair he sat in, gently pressing a kiss to his temple. “Well, you see…I got this wonderful letter. You know, I’ve never had anyone tell me they missed me before? It’s such a strange feeling, to know someone wants me.”

He was silent for a moment after, his face staining a messy red. Then, Flannán gently took her one of the hands she was using to lean on his chair, kissing her palm and then her wrist with an air of ritual, as if he was both confirming she was really back and steal her breath at the same time. He rumbled quietly, “I never knew until you were out of reach but…it hurts me. It hurts just how much I ache for you.”

Now it was her turn to blush prettily, stammering syllables for a moment before she gently ran her other hand over the top of his head, twirling gently the length of his hair around her fingers before she tenderly carded her fingers through the hair on the scruff of his neck (making him relax a bit into his chair, leaning into her touch). “D-does it help, me being back?”

“Yes ‘n no,” he answered. “You being back helps the hunger but…I will always long for you, mo ghrá.”

He froze as she swung herself into his lap, dumbly looking down at her as she pulled him down to pepper kisses along his face and jaw. Slowly, his arms wrapped around her and he buried his face in the crook of her neck.

She whispered in his ear, “Grá mo chroí thú.”

Flannán melted into her, gently kissing her neck. “I love you too,” he growled affectionately.

In my head she's a singing horse.

In Irish when you are talking about something like a dog that has red hair you use the name of the creature and then a colour as a modifier, this applies to people too. A dog with red hair would be 'madra rua' [maud-rah ru-ah].

In Irish 'capall' [cop-al] means horse, and 'roan' is a horse colour type and I misread her name the first few times I saw it so she is now forever a singing horse in my mind.

“Sionnach” which just means fox

And “Madra Rua”, which is red dog. I find this delightful.

Humans seeing creatures that resemble dogs and calling them x pupper/doggo is a truly universal experience. There are multiple Irish animals names madra x eg madra rua: ginger dog (fox), madra uisce: water dog (otter), madra crainn: tree dog (squirrel), etc and I think that's beautiful.

pine marten = cat crainn

fox = madra rua

otter = dobharchú

goldfinch = lasair choille

chaffinch = rí rua

long-eared owl = ceann cait

squid = máthair shúigh

whale = míol mór

ladybird = bóín dé

spider = damnán alla

daddy long legs = snáthaid an diabhail

Of course some of these have other names too, like foxes are also called sionnach, and squirrels are more commonly called iora rua/iora glas depending on if they’re red or grey

Fox 🦊 in our yard yesterday. It comes in under the gap of the fence and was jumping around out the back, I think it was trying to spook the chipmunks 🐿

There are two foxes in the neighbourhood, this one is newer and healthier looking, the other one is lighter in colour and also very skinny.

The Irish for fox is madra rua (red dog) or sionnach which doesn’t mention colour so it includes white and grey foxes.

I'm honestly surprising myself with how correct I am spelling the words, as I'm dyslexic at the best of times. Even though I haven't taken a proper lesson in over a year, once you start flexing the muscle it starts coming back really quickly
