Mikethemod’s Brighton Marathon Prep.
Saturday was the highlight of my week. Our best friends Debbie and Andy Harris, AKA Bootleg Blondie, decided they were going to take Dawn and me, AKA mikethemod, on film location in Brighton. I didn’t have the heart to tell them about my potential hernia as I knew they were looking forward to our day out!
When we got up at 7am on Saturday it was raining so Dawn gave me grief about her hair going curly. And it was still raining when Deb and Andy arrived at 10am in the Bootleg Blondie Van. This is a real Rock n Roll van divided into two sections - half for band members to travel in (famous musicians have signed the interior walls) - and the other half to transport whatever.
It was then that we discovered the scooter wouldn’t fit in the back of the van. This wasn’t a good start. As I stood there looking helpless Andy came to the rescue by producing a large leather bag of tools from nowhere and sent me into my garage to search for some wing nuts. It was a scene that many real scooterists - including myself - have endured far too many times; we were both kneeling on the wet road in the pouring rain trying to undo bolts that were stuck fast.
Half an hour later we were sorted, phew, and the four of us, plus a dismantled leg-powered Lambretta, were finally en route to Brighton. Our first stop was Preston Park. This is where the masses start the Brighton Marathon race and is also the home of the famous Steve Ovett statue - or so I thought.
At this point I need to backtrack a little…. last year a PWR colleague told me he was on the Elite Start, at Withdean Park on the London Road, as he had run a good time in the Boston Marathon. I ran the Phoenix AC relays many years ago (Steve Ovett was on the same start line) – and I remembered that Withdean Park was flat. This appealed.
I wrote a polite email to the organisers telling them my best half-marathon time and asked if I could be on the Elite Start with my training friend. By the time I attended the Brighton Expo with Dawn to collect my number, I had been accepted on the Elite Start. Yes. We had a celebratory veggie lunch afterwards at Terre Terre.
Back to the present….. Andy skillfully manoeuvred his van along a narrow road up the side of Preston Park but I couldn’t see the statue of my hero Steve Ovett. A hasty Google informed us poor Steve had been cut down and stolen 10 years ago in 2007. Is nothing sacred?! Then we read that Steve had been remade (hurray!) and unveiled in 2012 on Madeira Drive by the Brighton Marathon Finish line - and the Volks Bar, home to any journeying Scooterist - double delight. Andy reset the Satnav and we soon got our first glimpse of the sea.
Our second stop was the loos on Madeira Drive. These are always well looked after but bloody freezing. Last time I was there I couldn’t climb off my scooter quick enough - after two hours spent clinging onto my 50 year old Lambretta I severely regretted wearing button fly Levis 501s.
Loo stop completed, our third stop was a parking bay where we deposited more coins than the Hatton Garden raiders lifted, to pay for just one hour’s parking. And there, in fine fettle and surveying the open sea, was my man Steve Ovett. His majestic running style was perfectly captured; big chest, arms barrelling round, hands soft and relaxed.
Dawn and Debbie were our costume and film crew and Andy was our Director. Cue - photo of mikethemod in Parka and Tootal scarf with Steve, photo of mikethemod in Teenage Cancer Trust Mod-style cycling shirt with Steve, photo of mikethemod in Demelza Hospice Care for Children Mod-style cycling shirt with Steve. Action - film of mikethemod in Parka running up and down, film of mikethemod in Teenage Cancer Trust Mod-style cycling shirt, etc etc, …..you get the drift.
During filming a guy in a disability car drove along the road and gave us a wave. This was an opportunity too good miss. With the Director waving his arms around, Mikethemod sprung into action and a Benny Hill-style epic was in the bag. Oh yes.
Our fourth stop was near the 7-mile point on the Brighton Marathon course, offering stunning views over the cliffs. With the sun glinting off the English Channel, Director Andy and I immediately had the same idea and Mikethemod - in his various guises - was soon running east and west along the cliff edge with the wind blowing, the sea breaking below and the Who’s ‘I’ve had enough’ playing in our heads.
After all this emotion, mikethemod, the film crew and the Director were in need of a restorative cuppa. On the road leading back into Brighton we discovered a 50s-looking café above the Marina named the Roedean Café - what a jewel, our fifth stop. With fantastic views over Brighton Marina and some delicious-looking food being served to locals, we enjoyed three perfect latte coffees and one Earl Grey tea.
Sixth stop the beach. I just couldn’t help myself. Marching over the stones carrying my polystyrene Lambretta, I went right to the sea’s edge and sat down. Wrapped in my Parka, I was ‘Jimmy’. The film crew got to work and took some impressive shots with Brighton Pier as our backdrop. After a few more photos at the front of the pier and by two Blondie-esque red telephone boxes, we were back in the van heading to our seventh stop - the Grand Hotel.
Andy parked up on the seafront and I ran over to the hotel to explain that mikethemod was fundraising for Teenage Cancer Trust and Demelza and we would like to take some photos outside the Grand Hotel. The Concierge Team could not have been more helpful. They allowed us to park our van right on the hotel forecourt and their fantastically professional Concierge ‘Paf’ - complete with top hat and tailcoat - ensured we got some great pics. I did think it was funny that one of the team said he never knew why some people walked past the hotel shouting ‘Bell Boy’! I advised him to go straight home and watch Sting in Quadrophenia.
By now we were tired and hungry (mainly me) but we had two more stops to go. In fact we stumbled across our eighth stop while looking for a parking place in or around ‘The Lanes’. Andy stopped the van to let a car pass and beside me to my left was a tiny lane disappearing behind a shop. “That’s it” I said - East Street’s Alleyway where Jimmy ‘hid’ with Steph (Leslie Ash) as the fighting Mods and Rockers were chased by the police. Jimmy and Steph actually did a little bit more than just hiding in this alley.
Andy put the hazards on, Dawn guarded the van on a yellow line and we quickly ran down the alley. In a tiny corner there was a door covered in scooter club stickers and mod patches. Hilarious - someone had scrawled ‘mikethemod’ on the wall! I am a celeb you know. We had a laugh taking pics in various poses and then dashed back to the van.
Ninth stop - the Mod shop Jump The Gun in the North Lanes. I had been there some months before to tell them about my project but got short shrift. Unfortunately they weren’t enamoured to see us again and, despite mikethemod and his scooter drawing a small crowd outside their shop, all they could do was tell us we were in the way of the door.
Tenth and last stop - fish and chips. The Palm Court restaurant on Brighton Pier is one of the town’s quality food venues. A year ago I booked tables for 50 Petts Wood Runners after we ran the Brighton 10k and we were all impressed with the quality of the food served here.
With its location at the end of the pier offering fine views out to sea and along Brighton’s coast, you may expect the Palm Court to rest on its laurels and be an expensive low-quality tourist trap. It most definitely isn’t. Dawn had a perfectly-baked salmon Debbie and Andy chose tasty vegetarian lasagnas and I went for the ‘Big Fish’, a 12oz cod loin - fantastic. Our food was fresh and hot, the service was friendly and efficient and the restaurant was smart and clean.
Outside the sun was now setting on the horizon and we watched a huge black mass of starlings dance over the sea in liquid formation. Although we were full, we couldn’t resist the aroma coming from the doughnut kiosk so we bought a bag of four piping hot sugar-covered doughnuts (I am carbo-loading you know) and ate them on the way back to the van. A great day. Now home to find out what goodies were captured inside our collection of cameras.

Name: Mia Sinclair Age: 33 Sexuality: Heterosexual Gender: Female Portrayed By: Kiana Madiera Availability: Closed
“Scary. This used to be home.”
→ Background
Mia was raised by her single mother, a woman who fought hard to provide for the two of them and keep food on the table, which prompted Mia to end up working throughout high school. She delivered papers or did odd little jobs like helping the nice old lady in the apartment next to them with her shopping, or cutting the old guy over the road’s grass. It was only ever a little but she still contributed and every little helps. Though she would have loved to keep her pockey money to use for hobbies that she’d love to take up like horse riding and dance classes... they just didn’t have the money to throw around and though it might have been a disappointment, Mia understood. Mia is, all in all, pretty understanding of everything. She’s very smart and kind-hearted, though sometimes these qualities can make her a little easy to walk all over and take advantage of. She lived next door to Aidan Clarke, one of her really good friends through school, who she eventually went on to date. High school was a little difficult in the sense that she didn’t have the make-up, the clothes, the popularity that a lot of others seemed to have but she was happy enough. She studied hard so she would make something of herself. Mia always liked to read, but not so much books. Mia liked to keep up to date with papers and news feeds.
After high school she stayed in Baberton and went to the local college. She didn’t want to leave her mother high and dry - she studied journalism and also worked part-time in a local restaurant called Spice so she’d have some extra money to help her mother out. She dated Aidan for around four years and despite the fact they were young she really did feel like she loved him, that they’d be together forever maybe, all those naive thoughts you have at that age. However, it seemed they weren’t to last, and shortly after their breakup Mia was offered a job at a newspaper all the way in Scotland. She jumped at the chance to start over and she packed her mother up, taking her with her so they could start a new - hopefully better - life.
→ Back to Baberton
Mia really didn’t have any plans to return to Baberton but after the last few years in Scotland, her life there sort of fell through in a horrible way. One night, she was working late and the house she shared with her mother was broken into. Someone robbed the place and ended up stabbing her mother in a struggle when the woman caught them. MIa found her mum lying in the living room and called an ambulance but she died on the way to the hospital. Mia then fell into a depression and stopped going to work, which resulted in her losing her job altogether. So she packed up, unable to stay in the house any longer, and found herself driving herself back to the town she grew up in. She even managed to rent her old apartment, even though she could afford something much more expensive now. Mia is looking for the comforts of home and memories, but she knows she has to be careful not to get too caught up in her sadness and her grief. She’s not too sure what her next move is now that she’s here but she’s sure she’ll figure it out.
→ What’s Her Secret?
Feels very responsible for her mother’s death. She wasn’t supposed to work at all that day, and especially not late, and her mother had no one in the house to defend her from the intruder. Even though she knows it most likely only would have also ended up with her being hurt or killed as well, she can’t help but carry the guilt and constantly runs through scenarios of what she could have done to save her mother, and suffers nightmares due to the guilt.
Mia had a miscarriage when she was younger. Only Aidan knew about it and it was the reason for their break up, they just... couldn’t deal with it. It certainly wasn’t planned but as soon as she found out she was really happy. She told Aidan right away and they were happy a few weeks but then unfortunately, she lost the baby and it broke something between them. The offer from Scotland came at just the right time and gave her the space she needed but that doesn’t mean she truly got over the pain of it all.

Forbidden Love Part Six
Chapter 6
Priya POV
It was Saturday afternoon when we had gotten back from a case. It wasn’t one of the terrible ones. While we were on the plane Spencer texted me saying that our date would be tonight and he would be at my place by 8.
It was 7:30 and I had just finished my hair and makeup and started looking through my dresses trying to find an appropriate one for our first date. I finally found the one that I had gotten as a self-congratulatory dress after I had gotten accepted into the BAU. It was a black dress that flattered my figure. I rushed around to put on my jewelry and stuff my small crossbody with my phone and wallet along with an emergency tampon and the lipstick I had on tonight. As I had finished getting myself ready the doorbell rang.
My Outfit
I rushed downstairs to the door as to not keep Spencer waiting, and opened it. He looked so handsome wearing a black suit with a purple tie and carrying a bouquet of white anemone’s, which were my favorite flowers.
He cleared his throat before saying, “you look beautiful...oh...these are for you. I remember you said that they were your favorite flower”.
“Spencer, you remembered!” I exclaimed before ushering him into my townhome.
He took off his shoes and followed me up to the second floor.
“Spencer, you better not be staring at my ass” I said jokingly.
“Don’t worry, I’m more of a boob’s guy myself.” he replied humorously.
I just laughed at his joke before saying, “Spence, can you grab the vase from the cupboard up there?”.
He complied and with ease he reached the top shelf in the cupboard and grabbed the vase and handed it to me.
I filled the vase halfway with some water and put the flowers in it before leaving it on my island.
“Okay, I’m ready so where are we going?” I asked him.
“Now that is a secret” he replied smiling at me.
I sighed in fake exasperation and we headed downstairs to put on our shoes before leaving.
I put on the red heels that I had decided to wear with my outfit and he slipped his feet into his shoes. We headed out the door and to his car to head to our mystery date.
While in the car I realized that Spencer was the nicest guy that I had dated in a long time. He opened the door for me regardless of whether it was the door at work or the car door. He brought me flowers. He was so far the total package.
The drive to our mystery location was pretty uneventful. We exchanged conversation throughout the car ride to our destination.
“Are we almost there yet?” I questioned.
“Almost, only 10 minutes away. I chose a place further away as to avoid people we know” he explained.
“Wait, it’s that light up building! Are we in Tyson’s Corner?” I exclaimed.
“Yeah we are, you spoiled my surprise” huffed Spence in fake exasperation.
“But I still don’t know where in Tyson’s Corner we’re going to” I said excitedly.
“I guess” he said with a fake pout painted on his face before pulling into the parking lot. We headed to the restaurant front, he had parked on the side of the mall with all the restaurants.
“Can I get a hint as to where we are heading?” I asked Spencer.
“Fine, you can get your favorite dessert from this place” he said rolling his eyes at my impatience.
“So cheesecake?” I said questioningly.
“Is that your favorite dessert?” he asked. I gathered that we were headed to the Cheesecake Factory however I decided to tease him a little bit.
“Nope, chocolate eclairs are my favorite!” I said teasingly.
“Oh, shut up” he said jokingly.
I punched him on the shoulder just to annoy him. He faked shock before smiling at me and taking the hand I used to punch him and intertwining our fingers. We walked to the restaurant and inside in a peaceful silence.
He told the waiter at the front his name and he led us to our seats. We had a relatively secluded area. We sat down and Spencer just looked at me expectantly.
“What?” I questioned.
“Are you serious?” he asked.
“About what?” I inquired.
“You didn’t notice him ogling you?” he asked.
I practically snorted with laughter before saying, “Why would he be doing that?”
“Maybe because you’re so damn beautiful” he replied.
“Spence, you’re so sweet but in high school I learned that most guys asked me out on dares” I said.
“That’s ridiculous. You’re the most beautiful woman in this room” he said before smiling at me.
I blushed before muttering a thank you.
Dinner was amazing. He had ordered the Chicken Madiera and I ordered the Cajun Jambalaya Pasta. We both had red wine and ate our fill of bread. The best part of dinner wasn’t the fact that he was the perfect gentleman, it was when he took the unwanted mushrooms from my plate without me even asking him to. He knew all these little details about me it didn’t even matter that he didn’t know about some of the more important things in my life. After dinner and conversation headed to more of our family. I already knew about his mother being at Bennington but he explained to me that he was the one who put her there and because of that he felt forever guilty. I explained to him more of my family struggles which weren’t even close to his but he still aptly listened.
A while later the waiter came by asking if we wanted any dessert.
“I would love some but I am so full I don’t know if I can make it to the car” I said before taking a sip of wine.
“Can we still see the menu and we’ll just get it to go” said Spencer smiling knowingly at me.
The waiter handed me a menu and headed to the table that was asking for their check.
“Get whatever you want” stated Spencer.
“Are you sure?” I asked.
“Yeah. We can just head to one of our places and by the time we get there some of the food will have digested.” He replied.
“What? You don’t have a statistic?” I asked teasingly.
He just smiled and said, “50% of food in the stomach is digested in 2 ½ hours and since the car ride back is half of that time 25% of the food in our stomach will have digested by then. But I’m trying hard to be more conversational”.
I just rolled my eyes while chuckling. We looked through the menu and decided to get a slice of the Chocolate Mousse Cheesecake to go with some fresh brewed coffee at my place. The food came out in a bag and the waiter handed Spencer the check. I attempted to reach for the check before he swatted my hand out of the way.
“Just finish your wine Priya, like the alcoholic you are” he said with a grin on his face.
I narrowed my eyes before scoffing at him and picked up my glass and downed the rest of the wine.
Before I knew it we were out of the restaurant and at my place. He came in and we headed upstairs to pick out a movie to watch while devouring our cheesecake.
“Spencer, babe, can you please choose a movie while I change into some more comfortable clothes?” I questioned.
“Sure, I’ll get started on the coffee as well” he responded before heading to the movie cabinet and going through them.
I went upstairs and quickly changed into some yoga pants and an old FBI t-shirt that Hotch and I got after we did that marathon a couple years ago. I headed downstairs to the heavenly smell of some freshly ground arabica bean. Spencer handed me my coffee and we headed to my couch to start the movie. The TV was already at the menu screen and I grinned.
“Spence, you chose Hercules?” I asked smiling.
“Well it’s one of your favorites, is it not?” he replied with a smirk.
“Yeah. You know how I feel about Greek Mythology.” I said.
“Then shut up and eat you dessert and watch the movie Athena” he said with this dumb, but actually very attractive, smirk on his face.
I just elbowed him softly and grabbed my coffee. He pressed play and the opening credits started. As they showed Hercules being loved and treasured by Zeus and Hera, Spencer and I situated ourselves on the couch. We were both sitting criss cross on the couch and I pulled a blanket over our laps. Spence grabbed the cheesecake, which he had put on a plate while I was upstairs, and balanced it on half his knee and half on mine. As the movie progressed the cheesecake got consumed and the coffee sat on the table getting cold. By the time that Hercules was saving the town from peril, Spence and I were dozing off.
“Hey, just sleep here tonight. We don’t have work tomorrow” I said shoving Spencer awake.
“You sure?” he asked before yawning.
“Spence, come on. Don’t worry. You have clothes here and we can just watch the movie until we fall asleep” I replied in a groggy voice.
He nodded and went to change. He came back after I had put the dishes in the sink and in water to make life easier later. We both sat back down and by the time that Hercules headed to the Temple of Zeus for the second time both of us were dead to the world. The movie continued to play as we each dreamt of the other.
A/N I apologize for the major gap between this part and the last but I’ve been super busy with the semester and I had major writers block. By the way that statistic I just googled so it may or may not be true. I hope you enjoy!

Posting for the first time in several years? You betcha! All has been well in blogging terms, just not an avenue I’ve felt like driving down for a while. Notably, though, I have in recent years devised a fair few of the kinds of playlists which would’ve been at home here; capsules of time, of feeling, of a certain state to close your eyes and breathe through. Sequenced, nuanced, structured to be a greater sum. Music in that way that hasn’t really changed since our first uncoverings of punk rock back in high school.
The past decade of my musical taste’s maturation has exposed a certain style as a personal signpost. And not in the way that black t-shirts can pose as personality, something more visceral and exclusive. I often explain it as “female fronted electronic pop”, but unlike easy monikers such as “chillwave” or “doom metal”, nothing I’ve heard simply stamps this genre with its own catchphrase. So, I’ve coined a signifier I’ve applied to a few playlists in the past, with a special niche of energy inside of the “female fronted electronic pop” umbrella: “xx”. These are songs to wash yourself over with. Sounds to play when you know you need them, as favorite artists have a way to be that kind of warm blanket.
In nuts and bolts, these songs have all been released within the past ten years at most. The singers are all female. There is a general sense of danciness abound, for the deepness with which the synth sounds are wielded. Some setups are little more than a laptop and a dream, though many are more of a traditional guitars and drums arrangement. Woven throughout are remixes, featured vocalists and collaborations. The band Yumi Zouma crops up a couple times, and I’m honestly not sure sometimes if that means the band, their new singer, their old singer (at a time known as Madiera, now Laum) or some combination thereof. Above all, these are songs I’ve spun near a hundred times apiece, and that feels like only a fraction of the time in the sun they’ll have on my watch.

Funchal, Madeira - April 18th
Who would have known…an absolutely gorgeous island in the middle of the Atlantic…we must admit, we both thought Madiera was a city in Spain (not Portugal!). Spent this beautiful day driving around and through this amazing little gem … through the fishing village of Camaraderie de Lobos made famous by Winston Churchill (who knew, I ask again…and again … and …), to the second highest sea-cliff in the world – high above the clouds!! - called Cabo Girao!! so much to see … so little time…
This, sadly, is the last of 46 most amazing ports of call from around the world …
Now, a week long voyage back to florida… To have been able to make this trip was such a gift. This meager little blog of ours does not come near to sharing with you the magic. We tried… but we could not find a way to bring you into our shoes… to have you feel the wonder …. the excitement… the smells and the visuals…. to “taste the beer”, as Paul would say…
We know so much more than we did… and so much less than we should ….
At sea now… only have 6 more days to repack all the things I didn’t need to bring (including my light-up blue wig … better you don’t ask …).
See you soon …
