Veliko Tarnovo Pottery
(12th - 15th Century)
Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria
There are three major schools of Bulgarian pottery (that have survived and are practiced in some form to this day) - pottery from Troyan, Veliko Tarnovo and Busintsi. The three styles of pottery are made using different techniques, forms and ornaments.
The pottery from Veliko Tarnovo uses a Sgraffito technique, which involves applying a thin layer of white clay, engraving designs on the dry surface of the clay, firing the design at a lower temperature, applying coloured or transparent glaze on top of the engravings, and re-firing the design at a higher temperature, resulting in a three dimensional design.
This style of pottery was typical of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom in the 12th to 14th century, and was made in Veliko Tarnovo, which was the Bulgarian capital at the time. It was used by the aristocracy of the time both for dining and for decoration.
Commonly used designs include plant, animal and human motifs as well as complex geometric patterns (some of which evoke solar imagery). The colours associated with this style of pottery are brown, yellow and green which all carry different symbolic meanings, with the brown originating from the natural colour of the clay, and the green and yellow coming from different pigments in the glaze.
Tarnovo style pottery is made to this day by artisans in the city. Nina Nesheva and her son, Dimitar Neshev, make designs which recreate the palette and style of the Tarnovo ceramics. Inspired by designs recovered from Tsarevets (the medieval stronghold overlooking Veliko Tarnovo) during archaeological investigations in the 70s, Nina Nesheva set out to create this style of ceramics, and has been creating works of art on the Samovodska Street in the Veliko Tarnovo historical district for more than thirty years. In their atelier "Chupi Kupi", you can see both modern examples of this pottery, as well as original shards of pottery provided by the Veliko Tarnovo Archaeological Museum (see the 4th photo above). It is also made in the city of Elena by local master Valentin Dimitrov.

Name: Boris Goranov
Age: 32
Pronouns: he/him
Job: Customer Support Associate
Height: 5'10
How do they take their coffee: two tablespoons of instant coffee + boiling water, drink mostly cold when he eventually gets round to it
Extra:
borisā job means he gets shit on by customers and staff alike because he has to be a go between. he has the worst luck in the universe. this isnāt a good match.
always looks a bit sweaty and rumpled like something's chasing him (deadlines). ivan's had a quiet and a few not so quiet words with him about the way he turns up to work looking - part of it is that boris is still living out of a suitcase (serious case of Male Bedroom Syndrome, he has a bedframe, a chair, and a TV in his room and no other furniture, see image) and part of it is that he doesn't get to sleep until 4am most days.
lives on caffeine and fast food - noodle pots, supermarket sandwiches, chicken buckets and fries. several members of staff have tried to introduce more fruit and vegetables into his diet but he says he doesn't have time for all that chewing.
if he's not at his desk you'll usually find him outside in the woefully inadequate smoking shelter, sucking down a cig.
actually a really good laugh outside of work! enjoys going to loud, filthy gigs where the drinks are cheap, and trying (usually failing) to pick up girls. loves all kinds of music and if he doesn't have to be with a client he'll have his headphones on and absolutely blasting.
gets serious cases of the nervous shits and due to his diet of whatever he can heat up and bolt down in his spare time, his bathroom issues are famous among staff.
he is very good at his job, let no one doubt that - he knows a fix for just about every problem, and has all kinds of creative ideas for getting what the customer wants. unfortunately it's one of those roles where people only notice if it doesn't go right, so he often doesn't get the accolades he deserves. he also gets himself in trouble as he loses his brain/mouth filter when he's stressed. people usually forgive him, because he looks like he's on the verge of sobbing.
#hws bulgaria#aph bulgaria#hetatech hub au#hetalia#office au#i hope i made him look tortured enough#i love to torture him#hes like a wet cat in a bin and i want to rattle him around

BULGARIA IS TRANS
"Another really common phenotype is the black hair and white skinned girls, the weird thing is there doesn't seem to be a male equivalent of this look."
I was looking for Bulgaria's facial features so I can draw him and apparently our boy could be very much trans. I'll look further into this but... yk... I feel like it's a cool hc

Hey @lindonwald I wanted to add a little something to your ot3 Idea and I've come up with thisš :
*
Bulgaria and Greece are roommates (omg they were roommates :o), trying to survive college life and one day Greece found kitty Romania on the streets, unknown to him that he's a.... (human, vampire, shape-shifting fantasy thing, idk). He takes the kitten home despite the landlord having a no pet policy to their apartment.
It took some convincing and some belly rubs from the kitten for the Bulgarian to agree to keep the kitten, secretly, at least till they menage a new apartment. Only 3 months has passed and the cat is all grown and healthy, now living in a better home with his owners.
Bul decided to take a trip to Romania since they've been doing a lot better financially to afford a little trip for a week. Which even now still surprises him, because just 3 months ago it felt like him and Greece were stuck in time, too many assignments to finish, too little free time, not finding manageable jobs and having to tolerate an irritable landlord who had a poorly kept apartment to offer, the only one they could afford at the time.
It may sound ridiculous but it felt like ever since they got that cat their luck has been turned around, gotta thank Greece for his obsession with cats if that was the case, cause the bulgarian sure was happy with what they accomplished so far. Just as he was looking for places to visit he saw a funny add from the romanian site, "Did you know that cats are able to ward off bad spirits and unfortunate?"
"Is that another one of those romanian folk sayings?" He wondered and it sounded quite funny at first. But as he keept reading "if a cat suddenly brings happiness to your life there is a chance that it came with a mission. To protect you, as there's gonna be something in your future that could threaten your life, something out of your control, so tell your prayers in case tomorrow may be your last day. Be sure to keep your cat by your side at all costs if you wish that not to be. Meanwhile you can visit our website to find out who can be your future husband and mo-"
He just closed the add by that point, the bulgarian wasn't the one to believe in superstitions such as these, but the coincidence of it... the fact that he was just thinking about it, and what the add said gave him a shiver down his spine. He glanced at the cat who he thought was taking a nap on the couch only to find him staring back to his eyes pretty focused, as if he was listening to what his owner just read.
"You're being creepy, stop staring" the bulgarian ordered, the cat decided to go to the kitchen then with his tail between his legs. Not a good sign. A sigh can be heard as the man lays his back down on the couch. "And I was in such a good mood today" he said to himself before closing the laptop.
*
Well, this was a little brainstorm š
#the part with cats warding off bad spirits is an accurate superstition#the rest I just made up on the spot#romanian adds aren't this wild btw š#I don't consider myself such a good writer so I don't mind if anyone else wants to give this idea a try#aph romania#aph bulgaria#aph greece#ot3#If I get better I'll come back to this#Hetalia#there was suppose to be more stuff happening during the trip#and the cat would've turn to his human? form at some point#I set a little plot with the bad luck thing#hetalia prompt

romania for the character bingo š I /need/ to know your thoughts
I SWEAR I TRIED TO POST THIS THREE TIMES OH MY GODD
Anyway. The blorbo
I was asked about him but I could go wayyyyyy way on. Like,,I have so many thoughts about him (and not enough brain capacity to remember allit)
First of all 10/10 character design. Heās like a song I put on repeat bc itās just an absolute banger. Heās a very ive-got-your-back character and I like that about him,,always looking out for people yknow? Heād invite you over n be like āhelp yourself to anythingā speaking of his house, thereās probably plants everywhere. Personally I killed a cactus but somehow some people are good at it?? And I think that fits him. Kinda like my hc w liecht but I think heād be pretty flexible with his gender,,itās just so hard for me to process him that way so to me he stays as idk what that is but it fucking rocks. Also I think heās like a modern artist and gets āomg can you read my tarot???ā And he makes people pay for it
#hetalia#ask game#did not mean for that to become a paragraph š#HOW COULD I FORGET#he was definitely emo/scene#I had something else to say what was it????#oH#I have this small obscure hc that in some cases he can make objects levitate#though the recent chapter of him n Bulgaria made me feel like a prophet#may or may not be canon??? oh well#i like to think he does it unintentionally haha#like with strong emotion. he gets too stressed and a cup suddenly launches at the wall

it's that time:
Miss Universe National Costume 2024
is Here!
that's right! Everyone's favorite justification for the continued existence of beauty pageants has returned. with Looks!
Some of this year's top Themes include:
foliage!
gold!
weapons!
giant birds!
letting seventh-graders make your costume, apparently!
I did watch the video, but the most complete version I could find is missing a bit at the beginning. So I can't tell you what the inspiration was for anything before Bolivia; on the bright side that's fewer shitty rhyming couplets I had to suffer through.
Let's begin with:
Miss Angola! Tone down the color palette a little, and this honestly could have worked for that year the Met Gala was Catholicism- themed.
Miss Argentina, looking just thrilled about the sparkly toucan on her head. I feel like this is supposed to read as some combination of jungle/river/waterfall but this is from the part that I couldn't find on video.
Miss Aruba, I don't know if your giant spangly bird headdress was supposed to look like a potoo, but I am choosing to believe that it's on purpose and I love that for you.
(okay I checked, it's an endangered Aruban burrowing owl. even better!)
This is like the fourth year in a row Miss Australia has just worn a regular-ass gown. Do better!
You know who's doing better? Miss Bahamas, is who. Look at that giant fish. I wish I had video of this, I bet it moves.
Ah yes, when I think of Belarus I definitely think 'verdant tropical foliage.' also is it just me or is does the bodice fit very weird.
Holy shit, Miss Bolivia. This is where the video kicks in, so I can tell you that she somehow managed to dance in it. I'm a little afraid that this costume is going to eat Miss Aruba.
Miss Bonaire is from a Caribbean island that I don't think has ever competed in Miss Universe before? They have a national marine park that this costume is based on, which is is nice!
Miss Botswana's costume is made of leather and cowrie shells, and she is clearly having a great time being able to move freely without 75 pounds of headdress or platform heels. She did a very cute dance that kind of felt like a flex on her more heavily encumbered competitors.
Miss Brazil is wearing a tribute to Brazil's mineral wealth, which is something that basically every country with a mine in it has done at some point. I like the pannier-esque things, I guess.
Love a Tribute To A Weirdly Specific Thing, and Miss British Virgin Islands' mail-themed costume is a wonderful example of such.
Miss Bulgaria showed up dressed as a supervillain, her outfit is vaguely themed around 'the strength of women' and she just spat out a MOUTHFUL of BLOOD? on stage??? No idea how to react to that, frankly.
I'm going to pause to get the next batch of images together, and also to recover from the 'spat out a mouthful of blood' thing, because I was NOT prepared for that.
