I do get a lot of amadeus's anxiety around his Hulk being uncontrollable cuz Maddy does try to downplay him being dangerous to others and Bruce believes that he wouldn't hurt anyone like that's all nice but Amadeus is intimately aware of what he has been pushed to do much more than say Bruce or even Maddy or Jen cuz he knows how he manipulated others to punish people he felt like deserved it (im he sicked Jen on tony and manipulated herc and angel into joining his side of wwh by making it appear that shield was literally trying to kill him at that moment and idk if herc even knows he did that angel might have guessed)

there's this line he toes where he is both intimately aware he is a violent cruel person while also wanting to absolve himself of his violence by pinning it on Hulk. and I think part of it has to do with Maddy cuz she points to it being Hulk when I think Amadeus naturally knows he's violent and that it is him whoever is fronting and I think the tension with Maddy makes that confrontation much harder like I think maddys blaming it oh the Hulk made Amadeus do the same thing where I think if herc had been there it wouldn't have played out that way

which isn't to say Maddy is wrong she just ultimately doesn't know Amadeus very well anymore. like she wasn't there for ugly cruel Amadeus so she doesn't know what he is capable of or even his relationship to violence. like I just think a lot of the tragedy of totally awesome Hulk is that Amadeus was going to the wrong people like he should have gone to herc because herc has (well maybe not at that point but that's a different convo) a much healthier view on violence and fighting

I think it would ultimately end up being more ‘Cho Chang’ like than your kind intentions would want. A lot of fantasy names are genuinely just old names, or ones that are barely changed from old names. However, since you’re not from the area you’re writing about, you may not know what parts you’re changing.

Take the name Madison for example. It started out as a surname, meaning son of Matthew. Then through strange circumstance, via the popularity of the 80s movie Splash!, it became a popular female name.

An outsider who doesn’t know the history and may not get the hint of the original definition might not know that -son means boy. So if they were making up an Anglo female name, inspired by Madison, they might name their lady character Fredson.

Which is fine! Ladies can be named whatever. But it’s definitely going to appear male to many people, and will not flow as naturally in our tongue. It would also show that the author is unfamiliar with our language, which may upset some (especially if our language or culture was endangered or colonized by the author’s culture. Obviously since we’re speaking English, that’s not applicable, but you catch my drift).

It would show that the author thinks -son is a reasonable first name suffix for a female Anglo character. Hell, considering how many other names end with son (Jamison, Robinson, etc) it’s not too much of a stretch! But just doesn’t really work! So at best ‘Fredson’ would just be odd.

Meanwhile, to stretch out the Madison idea further, ‘Madi’ could totally work as a prefix for a made up name, if we’re going by popular English speaking convention. Maddy, Maddie, even Madeline (which may be unrelated? I know it was popular before Madison became a female name) all sound similar and are popular. So an author more familiar with Anglo-ish names might come up with ‘Madinica’ (Madi+Onica) or Madisa (Madi+Elsa) or whatever. Those fit a lot better!

So idk how much research you WANT to put into the names. There are a kajillion distinct cultures in the area you’re inspired by, and they all deserve respect. But they might also be really difficult to portray accurately!

Take the Democratic Republic of the Congo, for example. Since there were a lot of government changes in the last few decades, their citizens legally had to have some very specific names. One Christian name, one name indicating their dedication to the previous government of Zaire, and so on. Are your characters going to have similar national histories? Is it going to be relevant to show full names? Probably not, but it absolutely should be considered.

So your best bet, imo, is to go the ATLA route. Pick names directly from the culture you think best maps with your character. Like if your character is largely based around Ethiopian Jewish culture, pick a name from there! There are a lot of posts here and on the internet with lists of names common in certain countries and ethnic groups. Worst comes to worst, you can just mash the first name and last name (or whatever) of two different people from the same ethnic group*. That often works well. Many Wikipedia pages have a Notable [Ethnicity] People section on the ethnicity pages.

*I cannot think of any African or Arabian peninsula examples off the top of my head, but with Sikh people, ladies often have different last names (Kaur) than men (Singh), or at least they do in India. I think the diaspora largely sticks with Singh due to their adopted countries’ male-based surname culture. So if you’re writing a female character from such a culture, be careful not to mix names from different genders!

Additionally, some cultures may have closed naming practices! Again, I cannot think of any off the top of my head from your area of inspiration, but it may be worth keeping an eye out for that sort of thing. In those cases, it’s best to just adopt a name used by a real person from that culture that they shared with the outside group.

For example, I wanted to have a Lnu (Mi’kmaw) lady make an appearance in one of my stories. I couldn’t find any naming practices available, and I didn’t want to make up some fake-ass name. So I ultimately decided to name the character Pamela, after the famous Lnu lawyer Pamela Palmater. After all, Pamela must have been an important name to at least one Lnu person (at least one of her parents, maybe both!) and so in a way, that makes it a Lnu name.

You don’t have to take this advice, but I believe it would be the most respectful and would probably save you some headaches in the long run. Good luck with your writing!

I have a story I’m working on that’s set in a few countries that are inspired by african and middle eastern cultures. (I’m aware this is very broad but I want to make it not just a copy of one or two cultures, trying to get inspiration from as many as possible). Originally I was just making up names for the characters rather than picking existing names, but I realized that given I am english, most sounded like english names even if they were made up. They had ‘english vibes’ so to speak. So I was going to change the names to have more african or middle eastern vibes by looking at names and naming conventions from a number of countries/cultures and trying to emulate them while not actually using any actual real names.

The problem is I don’t want to fall into the ‘cho chang’ thing where its misinformed and racist because its just a ‘chinese sounding’ name not a chinese name. I can’t tell if the situation would be different because the countries I’m working with are fake to begin with. So, WIBTA if I made up and used ‘african sounding’ names for my fake countries inspired by multiple african and middle eastern cultures?
