Maddur Vada Recipe

Maddur is a small town in Karnataka’s Mandya district. It is famous for it’s Vada - a fried crispy treat made from Semolina, Onions, All purpose flour and rice flour. It is also famous for tender coconuts which is shipped all across India in truckloads, everyday. :) A lesser known fact is that it is the Tender Coconut Capital of India! Talk about a town influencing two healthy food habits on the rest of world.

Maddur Vada is so delicious, that when a train pulls into the station and the big group of vendors come calling it’s name into each bogie, people can’t resist pulling out their wallets and buying themselves a couple of these heavenly, aromatic crisps. Maddur Vada is served with coconut chutney, which, we now know, there is no dearth for at Maddur. :)

The town has a population of less than 30,000 people, but is a very happy, self-sufficient place. They have a very old Mosque which has served as the cultural backbone for their Muslim population. Maddur was recently recognised by the Archaeological Survey of India for being the home of an 8th century Jain temple at Arathipura. The site excavation has revealed several culturally iconic statues reminiscent of that era, including a statue of Lord Bahubali. There’s not much else to do at Maddur, as there are very few tourist spots and activities to indulge in.

Of all the sashes that Maddur wears across it’s proud little chest, I wish that the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) adorns it with another - recognising and applauding the superlative taste of it’s signature Vada recipe and give Maddur Vada a Geographical Indication (GI). I think one should start a petition to jump start a movement for the lovely town of Maddur. What do you say?!
