Last Updated:December 18, 2024, 11:46 ISTThe temple, which the locals claimed to be Siddheshwar Mahadev temple, was lying closed for over 40 years, and is said to be over 250 years old.Ajay Sharma, Uttar Pradesh president of the Sanatan Raksha Dal, said that the temple, now situated in a predominantly Muslim-inhabited area, has been neglected for years.Uttar Pradesh (UP) was in for yet another ‘discovery’ when a case of another long-closed temple came to light in Madanpura, a Muslim-majority locality in Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency. The temple, which the locals claimed to be Siddheshwar Mahadev temple, was lying closed for over 40 years, and is said to be over 250 years old. Officials are probing the circumstances of its closure and taking steps to re-open the temple. This comes just four days after a Shiv temple, also in a predominantly Muslim area that was lying locked for 46 years, was reopened by the district administration in Sambhal.Ajay Sharma, Uttar Pradesh president of the Sanatan Raksha Dal, said that the temple, now situated in a predominantly Muslim-inhabited area, has been neglected for years. Its premises are littered with dirt and debris. Sharma is the one who was first to spot the long closed temple in Madanpura and to inform the police.The discovery of the temple in Madanpura, Varanasi, created a stir as large crowds gathered to catch a glimpse of the ancient structure, believed to be over 250 years old. The news spread rapidly, prompting the locals to throng the area and demand the immediate reopening of the temple. Some women from Bengali tola also blew conch, appreciating the new finding. On precautionary basis, heavy police force have been deployed in the area to manage the situation and maintain peace.Sharma further claimed that the surrounding land around the temple, once owned by Hindus, had gradually been purchased by Muslim families, which led to the temple’s abandonment over time. Sharma stated that there was no opposition or controversy regarding the reopening, adding that the police had extended their cooperation. “Discussions with the mayor to re-open the temple have also taken place, and the situation remains amicable," he said.The Siddheshwar Mahadev temple, standing approximately 40 feet tall, is a remarkable structure believed to be around 250 years old, as per claims by members of the Sanatan Raksha Dal. The temple’s architectural style showcases towering spires, intricate carvings, and elaborate stucco work adorning its outer walls. These features are deeply rooted in ancient Indian traditions, reflecting a profound connection to Hindu scriptures and mythology. Other than this, the group also claimed to have unearthed other temples.“On receiving information about people gathering to reopen the temple, Dashaswamedh police reached the spot. No local resident expressed any objection to reopening the temple or continuing prayers there," said Gaurav Bansal, DCP Kashi Zone, Varanasi.However, the administration said that the call to re-open the temple would be taken only after going through the past of the temple. “It’s an old temple, and we are working to obtain its historical records. These documents will help us understand the temple’s history, its ownership, and the circumstances that led to its closure. Only after carefully reviewing all aspects will a decision on reopening the temple be made," said Alok Verma, ADM City, Varanasi who inspected the temple.On December 14, district administration officials in Sambhal discovered a long-closed temple in the Khaggu Sarai area, which had reportedly been abandoned for the last 46 years. According to local accounts, the temple’s owners, along with over 40 Hindu families residing in the area, were forced to leave following communal clashes that erupted in 1978. The violence compelled these families to migrate for their safety, leaving behind their properties, including the temple.News india Hindu Temple, Believed To Be 250 Years Old, Found In Varanasi's Madanpura atOptions = 'key' : '6c396458fda3ada2fbfcbb375349ce34', 'format' : 'iframe', 'height' : 60, 'width' : 468, 'params' : ;

Parsi tari Aarsi
“Doctor, chal carrom ramva jaiyye” (Doctor, c’mon let us play carrom)…
I grew up in Agripada in Mumbai – it had a cosmopolitan neighbourhood, largely a quiet area adjacent to the chirpy/busy area of Madanpura and Sankli Street. While most of the buildings had people from all castes/traditions living in them, there was this distinct colony which belonged to the sweetest people on earth – the Parsis!
The Murzban Parsi colony had 2 entrances – one from the main road opposite Nair Hospital and one at the backroad – must have had some 20 building inside the colony from end-to-end. I did not have any friends in that colony, but we were fascinated by it since a lot of Ads were being shot in that colony and having seen those ads on TV, we too wanted to visit that colony.
Didn’t have any Parsi friends in School…
My first and best friends in college were Parsis (they were Twins!)…
My first crush in college was a Parsi (oops, is wifey reading this!? 😊) – still remember that face!
My first friend in the corporate world was a Parsi…
My love for food, perhaps stems from the time I have been eating at their homes, their weddings, their navjots – lagan nu bhonu, Sali boti, dhansak, kheema pav, that limbu nu sharbat, lagan nu custard…aha!
My love for Carrom was deepened with the days I have spent playing carrom in their colonies (at Tardeo)– those old/classic buildings had some of the most functional activity area(s)…
Their love for simplicity – in the way they would dress, in the way they would stay, in their charming old ways, they have that distinct simplicity/authenticity that has stayed…
The flair in their language and their curse words – even if they would be giving you the choicest of swear words, you would still not feel bad – rehvade gadhera!
There are only a handful of them remaining now and on their New Year’s Day, remembering some of the best times I have spent with Parsis – Navroz Mubarak!
Arrey maari Patra ni Macchi kya che, Doctor! (where is my steamed fish (cooked in banana leaf), Doctor?)
Wonder who is this, Doctor?
Well, these are my twin Parsi friends – their surname is Doctor!

Surrounded by skyscrapers that dwarf old bungalows, the dusty ‘tikona’ (triangular) maidan has helped make Madanpura a hub of so many famous football players that it has earned the crowded neighborhood the nickname ‘mini-Brazil’. Unsurprisingly, all the soccer ‘stars’ here so far…

Origin And History Of Banarasi Saree
The Indian art and culture are fascinating beyond you can imagine. And the traditional nine-yard long outfit-the Indian saree portrays our rich and diverse culture more than anything else. Banarasi saree has a fair share of interesting history behind its origin. The Mughals were the ones to introduce banarasi sarees to our country.
No wonder the intricate design and beautiful craftsmanship have been winning our hearts ever since. Did you know that banarasi sarees are known as the “Indian Sun” in the world of global fashion? Such is the beauty and appeal of this material. It was first originated in the state of Uttar Pradesh in Northern India in a city known as Banaras. Banaras has always been in the limelight as a production unit for handmade textiles.
The artistic history and rich cultural tradition of this city are hugely resembled by the Banarasi sarees. The history of weaving in Banaras dates back to almost 1500 BC to 500 BC as mentioned in the Vedic text. The Banarasi weavers were popularly known as Tantuvayas who would craft varieties of clothes such as cotton, silk, and brocades. The popular belief among Buddhist legends is that post the death or Mahaparinirvana of Lord Buddha, Banarasi fabric was used to wrap his mortals which emitted red, blue, and yellow rays.
It was during the Gupta period when Banarasi sarees gained a lot of popularity. The murals in the Ajanta caves represented the animal and bird motifs, floral patterns, and geometrical styles of Banarasi sarees. Banarasi silk has always been prestigious among the Hindus and used for several ceremonial purposes. Even the Muslim rulers were in admiration of this piece of art. Their men excelled in the art of weaving banarasi sarees. From the period of Akbar, animal motifs were replaced with Persian designs.
Even foreigners from across the world couldn’t help but admire the elegance of this saree. Ralph Fitch, an English traveler described the fabric as “fine as the filmy webs and spider weavers”. Tavernier, a French traveler was moved by the power of Banaras silk and brocade industry and even wrote about it.
There are two traditional weaving centers in Varanasi. They are Madanpura and Alaipura. Both of them are known for their uniquely distinct style of weaving and design patterns. Madanpura weavers follow more of a traditional style of weaving that involves fine detailing. Alaipura weavers are more inclined towards unconventional and experimental weaving techniques.
It takes about 15 days to a month to weave a Banarasi silk saree. The process is quite complex and intricate and requires a lot of patience and focus. A heavily embroidered and decorated Banarasi saree that Bengali women usually wear at their weddings can even take around half a year to produce just a single piece.
Do you already not feel nostalgic and proud about such an authentic and cultural history of origin and evolution of banarasi sarees? Now you know why they are a must addition to your wardrobe apart from their jaw-dropping beauty.
