Magic Dusk

Magic Dusk by James Marvin Phelps Via Flickr: Magic Dusk Mackinac Bridge Straits Of Mackinac Mackinaw City, Michigan The Mackinac Bridge, is an engineering marvel spanning five miles that connects Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas over the Straits of Mackinac. Opened in 1957, it’s one of the longest suspension bridges in the Western Hemisphere, with a main span of 3,800 feet. This bridge is famous for its size and flexibility; it can sway up to 35 feet in strong winds, a necessity to withstand Michigan’s unpredictable weather. Nicknamed "Big Mac" and "Mighty Mac," the bridge took over three years to complete and is coated with 35,000 gallons of paint to protect it from the harsh elements.

Awwwww .....
OK, so you've got your Mackinac Bridge, your Mackinac Island, your Straits of Mackinac, but the city is Mackinaw.
And they're all pronounced the same. What gives ..?
I know - you're hoping for an explanation full of intrigue, or at least humor. Sorry. In fact, the answer is about as pedestrian as you can get:
"The founders of Mackinaw City opted for the phonetic 'aw' spelling, probably as a way to distinguish their town from Mackinac Island for confused postal carriers."
As for the derivation of "Mackinac." legend has it that Natives thought the shape of the island resembled a turtle (how they discerned that without aircraft or drone I don't know).
Anyway, they named the island "Mitchimakinak," which meant "big turtle." Then the French changed it to "Michilimackinac," which remains the name of the fort at Mackinaw City. The English shortened it it "Mackinac."

It’s not even so much that I specifically want to insult Paul Weller, although he was a dick about Robert Smith but whatever, the insecurity speaks for itself really.
It’s that he looks like what would happen if Iggy Pop grew up in Grosse Pointe, and as someone who grew up surrounded by Grosse Pointers on vacation at their ten bedroom summer “cottages,” I have a lot of really creative insults that only the 80 people in my graduating class would really understand, and I want to hurl them at someone.
And he was a dick about Robert Smith, so.

I’ll be crossing this bridge again tomorrow! Been doing it all my life, it really is impressive and terrifying all at once. And those metal grates are a real thing, they suck to drive over due to the sound it makes and also the way it makes your car veer side to side as the tires try to catch the grooves.
