I’ve featured some machine illustrations by Russian/American artist, Boris Artzybasheff (1899-1965) before, but you could dedicate a whole blog to them really. These are especially great: anthropomorphism at its finest.

One of the most common concepts explored in animation is anthropomorphism... giving life to inanimate objects.... think of the teapots in Disney films or the objects in Fleischer cartoons that suddenly have faces and arms... The master of anthropomorphism was an illustrator, Boris Artzybasheff. He embued machines with personality.
