The reason I love the Vess sidequest in Xenoblade 2 is we get to know her and her driver Mabon, personally. He's an aged driver and is retired, but Vess takes care of him in place of his dead father. She becomes a marital-like figure for him, despite being a blade.
This depicts a tragic situation personally that while blades and drivers may fall in love with each other, they'd never be able to have families in the way humans can. Vess essentially becomes Mabon's wife and takes care of his children, but they can't go beyond their blade/human difference in bodies.
Mabon is on the verge of drying, so he gives us tasks to take care of loose ends. He sends us to recover his old driver's gear and send them to his children so they have something to remember him by. Then he asks us to get Vess' favourite food one last time. He knows they don't have much time left.
Mabon wanted to spend the time he had left doing what he always did in peace with the one he loved. Unfortunately, his children won't be able to see him nor Vess again, but the memories are eternal and we the party, take them along with us. It's why I love the way blades are written into the storyline.
