My wedding spell
Of sorts.
It started with the date. I knew it needed to be a sabbat that had the most intense meaning to me. That is Mabon. And this the first intention of the spell was cast.
We negotiated the specifics of the location. Our intention was simple: spread joy, spread happiness. We've already loved each other for so long, so the intent was to lift the veil, as it were, and enjoy a day with people who helped us get to where we are individually and together. That was the balance to be struck.
This particular Mabon was set to be a half moon. Half dark, half light. It is also the autumnal equinox, half the day, half the night. This alignment meant so much to me as it represents how he and I respect one another and divide our priorities while still taking comfort in the whole-ness between us.
Location was tricky. He was leaning more towards isolation with just us, but I reminded him of all the amazing and supporting people we have in our lives. So to balance, we chose a location that allowed everyone to choose their own adventure: Vegas. He was skeptical at first, but this negotiation paid off in the end.
The next intention of the spell was of course the dresses. Balance--one for ceremony, one for fun. Found them both: one longer and ornate and shiny and laced and deep cut neckline, the other shorter, flowy, simple --perfect for running around the hustle and bustle of Vegas.
Next was assembling our story and sending invitations.
After that, the flowers consumed my focus. I knew I would be holding these while we declared our love for one another and I wanted to imbue them with every ounce of symbolism from all my collections of beliefs--colors, flowers shapes, memories. I crafted them from paper, after seeing none for purchase to meet my needs. I shaped calla lilies for faithfulness with the perfect rose gold accents balances with black foliage for protection and green hydrangea blooms for grace and beauty. The last details to make it complete was adding grain stalks representing Demeter, a halo of peacock feathers representing Hera (and marriage). Before traveling I made a small spell jar and filled it with protective, cleansing and comforting herbs and salts, sealed with pink and red wax. I affixed this within my bouquet and felt so aware of the intention of every crafted article when we stood together and committed each to the other amongst so much conjured love and enjoyment.
Rose necklace representing Aphrodite and blue and gold stars and moon earrings. I felt absolutely beautiful, exhilarated, ecstatic and just plain happy.
To further enhance the balance of Vegas, we encouraged our guests to dress as movie characters. For me, to satisfy my desire for absurdity, for him to honor our relentless appreciation for all things movies.
Before the ceremony itself, the Friday night before we invited guests to the Neon Museum -- so prior to any debauchery, at least we had some education (balance!). Saturday before the ceremony, we hosted a movie screening of a dearly loved classic of ours: Roadhouse.
It seems so silly, but this was our way of inviting others to experience and appreciate a movie we've spoken of countless times for all of its ridiculousness. And it was so worth it. Weeks after our wedding, people have brought up this movie with comments on how amazing and absurd it is.
Our ceremony was held at the Sci-Fi Wedding Chapel...housed within the Twilight Zone mini golf. The perfect setting. It was small but comfortable for our intimate group. The music was one of the last negotiations -- a blend of my fun, beat-centric requirements and his sentimental lyrics. We also agreed upon the Shining, Halloween and Batman theme music, with the intro to 2001 A Space Odyssey for what I would walk down the aisle to.
There I was, decked out in my ceremony dress, holding my perfectly crafted flowers, waiting for the second swell in the epic intro of Space Odyssey. When I stepped through the curtains and saw everyone dressed in their costumes (for us!) I was so touched, so surprised, so blissfully happy for every person there. Then I looked ahead and saw my soon to be husband waiting for me. After I met him at the alter, our officiant, a Mr. Herman Munster, walked out to the Munsters theme music.
Herman introduced us and himself, handed the mic to my soon-to-be-husband who had some touching, warm words to say about the his joy in getting married. Then Herman had us repeat our vows (which I couldn't possibly remember now), I know they had some latent innuendo, then swap rings and kiss. He announced us as husband and wife and we promptly joined our guests in celebration and photos.
We took pictures, played mini golf, had a lovely simple dinner of tacos, then we were off for the night traversing Vegas in our wedding attire.
It was just the most perfect experience and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I am always in praise of the Apple during the second harvest of Mabon. Not only is the Apple a very versatile fruit it is also quite magical!
The Norse goddess, Iounn (Idun) is the Goddess associated with apples and youth. Her name means, "ever young," and "rejuvenating one."
Magical associations with the Apple are many, but here are a few:
Fertility
Health
Beauty
Youth
Knowledge
Temptation
Immortality
Prosperity
And of course...love
From Merlin using a silver bough of an apple tree to cross into other worlds and return to the land of the living, to Eve offering Adam an apple from the Tree of knowledge; which was forbidden - hence the name, "forbidden fruit." The Apple has long been a historical mainstay in history books, mythology, paganism, & poetry.
It is the first fruit, and the history books say how other vegetables were coined after Apple and its associations. For example, Tomatoes were once called, "love apples" by the French.
In mythology, the golden apples in the garden of Hesperides were a wedding gift to Hera from Gaia which were said to grant immortality.
The apple is feminine in nature and ruled by Taurus, Friday, and Venus. So, it is used in many love spells. To ensure your lovers' affection, share half of an apple with them. When peeling an apple, try to get one peel to stay intact and then throw it over your left shoulder. This will reveal the initial of your next true love!
And let's not forget beauty spells, I mean the apple is known to keep one youthful. Yes, eating an apple a day could possibly keep the doctor away! They didn't make that saying up for nothing. Eating apples may lower high cholesterol and blood pressure, they also aid in digestion and can improve a healthy immune system. It is also said that they have a role in cancer prevention because of their antioxidants.
Eating apples has many Beauty benefits. They improve your complexion and hydrate the skin. They offer protection from UV rays, treat acne blemishes, and dark spots. They can work as a natural toner, reduce puffy eyes, and dark circles. They keep your skin subtle and can work as a moisturizer. Mash an apple and place it on your face - trust me, it helps to even skin tone and texture plus gives a rosy glow!
Cutting an apple width-wise or reveal the five pointed star a very witchy symbol and a sign of protection!
And for good health, youth, and vigor use the seeds to make a bracelet or necklace; always wear it. Bless it in the name of the Goddess Iounn to ensure health, youthfulness, and rejuvenation.

Things were a little quieter in September, but we still got 41 fills to enjoy, created by 21 wonderful bingo participants. We’re looking at 31 fics, five artworks, one moodboard, and the usual overachievers creating works that include fic and art (two fills) and fic and moodboards (another two fills).
The top two ships are as unsurprising as always: Merlin/Arthur was top with 16, and gen second with 13. That said, we’ve got a new ‘best of the rest’, with Gwaine/Percival (three works, the most they’ve gotten any month this round). They beat out Merlin/Gwaine and Gwen/Morgana (both with two), and a handful of other ships that got just the one fill.
Before you go on to see all the gorgeous works from September, I just want to remind you all that October is the last month to sign up for round two of the bingo. This round closes on the 30th November, followed by a bonus badge amnesty period in December, and then a short break for the mods before we launch round three next year.
Now, on to all the lovely works from this month. As ever, they’re sorted by ship and then by rating, and we encourage you all to heed any the warnings and practice self-care before clicking on those links!

Dark Year Protection Spell Jar
Mabon is this week, and it’s my first year celebrating! Mabon (to me, at least) is a lot about the transition to the Dark Year and the shorter days coming. The short days in the Winter can really mess with me, so as part of my Mabon observance I’m making a protection spell jar necklace for the winter!
Ingredients
4 Apple Seeds - apple seeds for protection, 4 being the number of stability
Chamomile - for peaceful sleep
Salt - for protection
Thyme - to repel negativity
Crushed Bay Leaf - for strength
I added all of my ingredients to the vial and let it charge under the moonlight with The Sun, The Star, and Temperance. I recited the following four times:
May whoever wears this charm be protected, and all winter I shall be warm. Surrounded by protective energy, I will walk in safety into the dark year.
Then I fastened the vial onto a necklace!
Any feedback or comments are welcome, I’m always looking to learn :)
Happy Mabon!

Mothering Sunday
A small drabble for Mothers day (UK) featuring Richard and Krista Clydesgod. Featuring some other characters.
It was a cool, crisp spring morning at the Clydesgod manor. Krista had spent most of the morning making all of the kids breakfast and opening gifts from them all. Well, mostly all of them. Richard was actually yet to give her a gift, insisting he was still ‘working on it’. Krista knew he probably was planning something creative. She didn’t really mind, she couldn’t wait to see it.
She was washing the plants from breakfast. They had a washing machine, sure, but she never trusted those machines. She preferred washing them by hand, it was almost relaxing when she got into a rhythm. She placed the last plate onto a rack, and looked around to look at the window outside. Where was little Dewi?
“Mabon? Dear?” She asked, turning her head to look directly at Mabon. He was lounging in his big chair, taking a much needed day off from working at the local council. He worked himself almost to death sometimes, he was really keen on getting a possible position at the Senedd Cymru. He looked over at her, placing his newspaper onto his lap as he began to move his hands around, trying to think of where he could be.
“I do not know,” He signed, thinking Krista knew. Mabon couldn’t speak English, though he did speak fluent Welsh. However, people do find his accent to be rather difficult to understand, so he did take lessons in British sign language in order for people to understand him much better. He didn’t really need to do it around Krista though, he was more or less just practicing. “I think he said he was going to work on something upstairs, no?”
Krista sighed, drying her hands on a teatowel nearby. She moved over towards Mabon, placing a little smooch on the top of his forehead.
“Thank you dear, keep up the good work!” She mused, patting his cheek as she left Mabon with a pink flush on his cheeks. She moved on, heading upstairs through the big manor. Rhys was outside, messing about on the swing. Gwyneth was in her room as usual, probably drawing in her own time at her new desk.
Richard never stayed in one place. Often moving from playing outside to watching TV at his whim. He had a bit of an active imagination, and did tire out easily after playtime. Once she got to his room, she was rather shocked to find it closed shut. Richard would’ve never usually done this, what was he planning?
She knocked on the door, not wanting to burst inside in case he was still working on something.
“Dewi?” She asked, “May I come in?”
A pause.
“Er. Ooooooooooooooooooooone second. I'm still finishing up a little thingy.” He replied, the sound of something falling over being present during his reply.
Suffice to say, Krista got a bit worried. She stayed patient however, waiting outside of his room. Waiting, and waiting.
She knocked again, a bit more concerned now.
“Richard? Are you okay? It’s been 10 minutes now.” She asked, almost tempted to open the door.
“One more second pleaaaaaaase.” This time, the sound of glitter falling around being present.
More time passed, and she knocked again.
“R-richard. It’s been half an hour. I hope you’re not making me a huge mess I’ll have to clean up?” She half-joked.
“Mmmmmm lemmie just add this ooooooooone thing and…” He paused, Krista’s hand was now inches away from the doorknob.
“...Yeah! It’s done now-”
The door swung open, Krista stumbled into Richard’s bedroom by accident. Maybe the wait got her a bit too nervous. She wasn’t too sure what he was planning, the last thing she’d want to do was find her son all covered in glitter and glue...again.
However, she’d open her eyes wide as she saw what Richard had got her. His arms were outstretched, and he held in his hand what looked like a hairband with 2 fake unicorn horns on it. They had been painted pink, and had glitter all over it. Glue was dotted all around as well.
Richard was beaming, holding it up towards her like it was an offering for some kind of god.
“I know people always look at you because you don’t have horns and we all do so I made you something so people won’t look at you anymore!!! I made the horns pink like your hair and, and the glitter is like...erm...like it’s very cool and stylish.” He said, his voice somewhat shaky as he moved the make-shift headband around to show her all the little details.
“I got most of the stuff to make this from Gwyneth’s room and I...mom? What’s wrong?”
Krista, not saying a word, took the makeshift horns from Richard, slowly examining them. It was a child’s work, sure, but something about it felt...special. She’d try to put it on, struggling a bit as she didn’t want to accidentally snap it in her hands. It sure didn’t help that her hair was much different than everyone else's. She turned her head, looking at a little mirror that Richard kept in his room. She looked, well, ridiculous...but she didn’t seem to care whatsoever.
“I hope you don’t mind but I sort of used all the glue so can we get some more tomorrow?” He asked, as Krista looked down at him. She slowly knelt down, wrapping her arms around his head and bringing him into a comforting , gentle hug.
“Oh Dewi...it’s so...it’s so wonderful. Thank you so much dear,” she replied, her voice sounding genuine as something got caught in her eye. “I can’t thank you enough, dear. You’ve made my day...just don’t tell Rhys and Gwyneth that, okay?”
She giggled, pulling away from the hug but keeping knelt down. She looked over at Richard’s ‘work space’, seeing a mess of paint and glitter all over the floor. He at least knew to have something covering the carpet...but it didn’t help that it was his bedsheets. Oh well, she could easily throw that in the washing machine.
“Thank you mama.” Richard replied, hugging her back as he wrapped his arms around her legs. Krista only chuckled, patting his head as she looked back at herself in the mirror. She was pretty sure people didn’t stare at her because of a lack of horns...but she honestly didn’t mind.
“Say, where did you even get these things from? I don’t remember your father taking you to the clothes store. I didn’t even know you had unicorn toys.” She asked, poking the fake horns as she pondered.
“Oh! I took them from Gwyneth’s room! She had those big unicorn things so I just took the horns off them! I even borrowed one of her hairbands!”
Krista fell silent, and looked down at Richard. He was smiling, still hugging into her leg. She let out a sigh, he had good intentions...but he really needed to ask for permission first.
Around 20 years later...
“Mom.” Richard sternly said, entering the living room as he held a small wrapped up present in his hand.
“Yes dear?” Krista replied, wearing the same horns on her head as she acted confused to what was wrong. She kept them all this time, maintaining them and wearing them every mother’s day. She thought it was cute. Richard did as well, until he turned into a teenager and started despising her for keeping it all this time.
“You can’t keep doing this to me,” he replied, sitting down next to her on the couch as he handed her his present. “If Vitalis was here he’d mock me for the rest of my days.”
“Doesn’t he do that already?” She asked, taking the present from him and looking at it. It was a little small, but she didn’t mind. “Anyway, let me see what’s inside here then.”
As she unwrapped the gift, Richard turned on the TV in an attempt to distract himself from her reaction. He didn’t really get her anything special this year, just a nice necklace he saw on sale. He never really knew what she wanted so he just settled for jewelry.
Despite Richard’s thoughts, Krista’s eyes shone like the stars, taking the necklace out and promptly putting it around her neck. It was a silver chain necklace, with a little octopus design below it. She looked over at Richard, making sure he saw how grateful she was.
“Thank you little Dewi!” She exclaimed, suddenly wrapping her arms around his head and pulling him into a hug.
“M-mOM!” He replied, struggling to get out of her grip. She knew he always acted annoyed but, deep down, he loved it.
It was just another mothers day for Krista Clydesgod.

Mabon
Mabon is celebrated on the Autumn Equinox, which occurs on the first day of Autumn when the sun passes the equator. Mabon is a celebration of balance, due to the days and nights being the same amount of time. Mabon is about reflecting and thanking the warmer days while also preparing for the coming darker days. It is a time to thank what the harvest has provided us and for what we were able to do during the summer. Now is as good a time as ever to complete tasks from the summer, resolve any situations, and release anything negatively impacting your life.
A perfect way to celebrate is by decorating your alter. Colors like green, yellow, orange, and red symbolize the change in the seasons from summer to fall. You can express these colors by using an altar cloth, candles, or ribbons. Decorating your altar with leaves and acorns is also a good way. You can use a cornucopia (bonus points if you make it yourself) as a gift to deities that contains apples, pears, cinnamon, and small pumpkins.
When celebrating Mabon we are celebrating what the sun has given us. If you have yet to harvest a magical garden now is the time to do it. As well as preparing your garden for next year. Mabon is a great time to cast spells to help you reach a more balanced life, specifically if you want help in a hectic situation or you just want to put a situation to rest. Protection spells for the winter months are a great idea, too. For added protection, you could create a wreath and put a protection spell on it then hang it on your door. As for more relaxed activities, you should also spend time reflecting on the good parts of the summer but also remember that those will come back again. You can and should start honoring the spirits. You can enchant things like acorns and turn them into necklaces or decorate them and put them on your altar, my pendulum is made out of an acorn. Having a feast with your family and loved ones is a wonderful way to celebrate and appreciate the bounties of the harvest. More importantly now is a time to relax and prepare for the winter, while also thanking and appreciating the summer. Do things that will make you happy and relaxed

Envisioning a Divine Gender Practice: Representation, Ritual, Practice, and Holidays
Again this post builds on the work of Delffin (The Queerophant) on Divine Genders. I’m not trying to teach their views, just explore what they might mean for my practice. They have way more on their Instagram and their Patreon than I could discuss here. You should absolutely go check out their work and support them. They’re quality!
At this point, these are just ideas that I’m experimenting with. I’ve not had a chance to implement these so I think it’ll be interesting to circle back next Nonbinary November and see how much of this holds up. My goal with this post is to envision a skeleton of a system that could be built on by individuals to create their own practices that include the Divine Genders. What I see for this sort of system is that it could be a coat rack to hang other practices on like soft reconstructionism and chaos magic and traditional witchcraft. It gives a trans and queer positive base from which to launch into other practices that may not have historically been very welcoming to those groups.
Representation
For those of us who use the Elements in our practice we’re already used to having representations of them in our practice. Since the Divine Genders have elemental associations, I think it would be neat to combine them in some form when building altars.
Bodily representation also is an interesting idea to me. I associate the Divine Androgyne with legs and torso, the Divine Masculine with the right hand, the Divine Feminine with the left hand, and the Divine Chaosyne with the neck and head. I could see those associations being used to cast a circle or serve as representation themselves.
I think however I more like the idea of treating them like guardians. If I redo my altar in this style, I’ll likely have one pillar candle for each of Them toward the back of the altar, most likely with some art wrapped around them, and I’ll light them as I call them to protect the ceremony.
I would love to have actual figurines of each at some point and maybe even create shrines to each as a way to further get to know each of Them.
Ritual
When I first read about Delffin’s ideas, a poem dropped into my head and I feel like it could be used in this manner to cast a circle.
“I am both
I am two
And in the aether
Once anew”
I could dig my feet in with “I am both” as this is a way to claim space. Then clap with “I am two” - clapping as been used to clear and cleanse spaces. Then envision a protective force with “and in the aether” and relax with “once anew”.
I also envision opening by invoking the Divine Chaosyne at the start of a ritual as They represent boundless freedom and possibility. Maybe open by asking for Their blessing. Then I would go about setting up the space more if needed. I’d then invoke the Divine Masculine and Feminine at the same time and ask for their blessing for the work being done. Afterward, I’d close with asking the Divine Androgyne bring the spell to come to pass or bring the work in union with your will.
I’m still playing with these ideas but I think there’s a lot that could be done here in the way of ritual structure.
Practice
As far as actual practice, this is where I feel like it’s best to plug in other interests or pre-existing practices. However, I do think there’s room to develop a practice out of the Divine Genders Themselves. I’ll get to holidays and moon phases in a moment but I think one could pray to these Genders. Even if someone is nontheistic, meditating on each of them could serve as a form of practice.
Each one feels naturally over certain areas:
Androgyne - union, connection, balance, closing a cycle
Chaosyne - expansion, growth, breaking free, opening a project
Masculine - protection, putting out, dismantling
Feminine - healing, drawing toward, creation
I’m sure others could expand on this but it’s a place to get started. One could give offerings and devotion as a form of practice. One could create spellwork rooted in Their areas with their symbols. It’s really a wide open field at this point and I think that’s what makes it to me so exciting.
Moon Phases
I liked the idea of using the moon as a way to spark consistent meditation or workings with the Divine Genders. So my ideas for right now are as follows:
New Moon - Chaosyne
First Quarter - Feminine
Full Moon - Androgyne
Last Quarter - Masculine
This is one I’m still playing with. This one is built around energy with the idea that the Divine Chaosyne has an energy all Their own where Divine Androgyne is between both the Divine Masculine and Divine Feminine.
Holidays
Applying the Divine Genders to Holidays is tricky but these are my personal associations so far.
I see Samhain as the “Big Bang”, a time for celebrating the Divine Chaosyne and Androgyne in us all. Connecting with the past. and divining the future are both tied with the cosmology I outlined in the last post
Beltaine would then be about celebrating the present, honoring the Divine Masculine and Feminine in us all. Focus is on ecstatic rites and protection, on the continuation of creation
Then there would be Holidays associated with each individual Divine Gender: Ostara for the Divine Feminine, Midsummer for the Divine Masculine, Mabon for the Divine Androgyne, and Yule for the Divine Chaosyne. I wanted them to line up across from each other but it didn’t feel right when paired with the energies of each season so I assigned them mostly according to that.
Symbol
I feel like most practices have symbols, especially protective ones and I wanted to come up with at least one idea for this path. Please excuse my terrible MS Paint job. I hope it conveys the idea.
The idea is that it represents all creation and the cycle of death and rebirth. In that way it’s protective because it contains everything, including our existence. It’s just one idea though. I’d love to see other’s ideas for what protective symbols in this vein could look like. I’d kill to have a necklace or a charm of some kind for this path as I’m beginning to work through it.
Conclusion
I hope this post gives a jumping off point for what including the Divine Genders in your practice could look like. I’ll probably be posting about it more as I go. I’m interested in starting up some tumblr shrines for each so I can explore them more in poetry and art and invite others to do the same. Even if this doesn’t resonate with you at all I hope it gives food for thought in defining your own practice in a more integrative way.

Has anyone ever written anything for you?
In your darkest sorrow, did you ever hear me sing?
Listen to me now, you know I’d rather be alone
Than be without you, don’t you know?
So, if not for me, then do it for yourself
If not for me then do it for the world
Poet priest of nothing, poet priest of nothing
As soon as Alaska finished singing, Sharon motioned for her to set her guitar aside. Shooting her girlfriend a look of confusion, she obeyed nonetheless, and was subsequently presented with a lapful of Sharon Needles. The brunette’s lips lingered against her cheek, her hands weaving in Alaska’s hair before she moved to hug her tight.
“That was so fucking beautiful, baby,” she whispered, and Alaska could tell from the rasp in her voice that she was trying not to cry. She hugged back, kissing Sharon’s shoulder and smiling against her skin.
“I’m glad you liked it.”
“Are you kidding me?” Sharon exclaimed as she pulled back. “I fucking loved it. Goddess, you’re so talented, it blows my fucking mind.” The witch tended to swear more when she was impassioned, and right now was no exception; Alaska laughed a little at the expletives that fell from her girlfriend’s lips like sparks and ash.
It had been a month since their first “I love you”s on the beach, and the heat of summer was beginning to fade and yield to the sunny chill of autumn. Sharon had been restless throughout the past week, worrying over the plans for a Sabbat celebration with the coven, and though Alaska had no idea what any of it meant, she wanted to try her best to help. That was why they were currently seated on the floor of Sharon’s apartment; Alaska had brought her guitar over and insisted that she had something to ease her girlfriend’s stress. Judging by the way Sharon was currently relaxed in her lap, it had worked, and Alaska was proud of herself for helping even a tiny bit.
“Hey, Noodles?” she mumbled. Sharon flushed at the nickname, something Alaska had taken up calling her recently, but nodded as a sign for her girlfriend to continue. “Can you… Can you tell me what this whole Sabbat thing is about?” Sharon clambered out of her girlfriend’s lap and sat cross-legged on the floor across from her, reaching over to grab a book from a pile next to her. She flipped through it quickly, finding the page she needed almost immediately and showing an illustration of a golden-red tree to Alaska.
“Okay, so most people would call this the Autumn Equinox, right? When the Earth’s turned another quarter.” Alaska nodded. “Right, so we witches refer to this as Mabon, and it’s a celebration of life and the harvest. Remember in August when the coven had a celebration for Lughnasadh and I told you it was the beginning of the harvest season?”
“Mm-hmm. I still can’t understand why it’s pronounced like that, by the way.”
Sharon laughed. “It’s Gaelic, darling. Nothing makes sense in Gaelic. Anyway, Mabon is the culmination of the harvest, and sometimes it’s referred to as the last Sabbit in the witches’ year. Does that make sense?”
“I guess so,” Alaska said quietly. “I, um… Would you ever mind, like, teaching me more about this stuff?”
“The seasons?” Sharon asked. Her girlfriend shook her head, fidgeting with the necklace she was wearing– a clear quartz crystal from Sharon’s store.
“Like… everything. Witch stuff.”
“You wanna be a witch?” Alaska blushed at the look of surprise on Sharon’s face, causing the witch to backtrack. “Sorry, I didn’t mean for that to sound so weird. I’m just a little surprised, I guess. You didn’t seem to be that interested in it before, that’s all.”
“I’m just scared I’ll be bad at it,” the blonde said in a tiny voice, almost a whisper. Sharon chuckled, taking Alaska’s hands in her own.
“Everyone has a different approach to the craft,” she assured her. “Don’t worry about getting things wrong, it’s gonna happen whether you worry about it or not. But if you really want my help…”
Alaska nodded earnestly, dark brown eyes looking up into bright blue. “I really do. I wanna give this a try.”
“Then I’m more than happy to help you, baby,” Sharon smiled, leaning over to give her a peck on the lips. “We can start with the most basic concept: what magick even is. That sound good to you?”
“Yes, please!” Alaska agreed excitedly, wiggling a little from her seated position. Sharon stood up and walked over to her bookshelf, scouring the shelves with a well-trained eye and selecting the book she wanted once she’d located it. Plopping back down in front of her girlfriend, she opened up the worn leather tome and began reading.
“ Magick is everywhere. It is in everything you see, everything you hear, everything you touch and taste and smell. More importantly, it is in the things that are invisible to these senses; magick is not just a tangible sensation, but an energy. It is the energy that surrounds you every minute of every day, since the moment your spirit bloomed into life, and with practice and effort, your own personal magick can be strengthened and manipulated to help you navigate the world. ”
“Wow…” Alaska said softly. Sharon chuckled.
“Yeah, Mom was always good at explaining difficult things really easily,” she reminisced. Alaska’s eyes widened slightly.
“Your mom wrote that?”
“Mhm. This is what eventually turned into her first book. You’re looking at the handwritten manuscript, unedited.” Her fingers brushed against the pages almost wistfully, feeling the worn paper under her fingertips and the indents where her mother’s pen had pressed into the pages. Alaska looked impressed, her eyes scanning the leather cover that Sharon had watched her mother attach by hand as a child.
“That’s… amazing,” Alaska breathed. Sharon looked up at her with a gentle smile.
“She was an amazing woman. I wouldn’t be the witch I am without her.” She cleared her throat, carefully blinking back the tears that clouded her eyes at the memories flying through her head. “Do you want me to go on, baby?”
Alaska nodded. “How’d you know I’d been exposed to magick before?”
“Hm?”
“Like, when we first met. It was the first thing you said to me. That I’d been exposed to magick, and that I had some kind of spell on me.”
Sharon nodded as she flipped through the pages of another, heavier book, adding bookmarks every so often. “A luck spell,” she said. “Mom taught me how to see auras when I was really young, but I never really got the hang of it. Not like Raja or Katya, anyway. But magick is easy to spot if you know where to look.”
“What does it look like?” Alaska asked curiously, scooting closer to her girlfriend and forcing Sharon to put her book down and regard her pensively.
“Depends on the type of magick. Your luck spell was golden red, like a very faint glow. It’s faded by now, I can’t detect it anymore. But you’ve also been glowing since you mentioned wanting to give witchcraft a try.”
“What, like, literally?” Alaska asked, incredulous. She definitely couldn’t see whatever Sharon was talking about, but her girlfriend laughed.
“Yeah, literally. White, kinda shimmery. At your solar plexus.” She reached out a hand and pressed her fingers lightly against the center of Alaska’s chest just below her breasts, where her sternum stopped. “Right here.” Alaska looked down, disappointed when she didn’t see anything other than her baby pink tank top. Sharon’s fingers withdrew slowly, and she seemed to break out of a trance as she looked back up at Alaska with a grin. “The solar plexus is where your personal power tends to come from. I’m looking at some serious magickal power, baby. You must have a witch in your family.”
Alaska snorted. “Yeah, right. You’re just messing with me.” Sharon shook her head.
“Not at all. It feels like…” she closed her eyes, breathing deeply as her fingers pressed against the same spot on Alaska’s body again. “Your own magick is strong, but there’s something else there. It doesn’t belong to you, it’s… older. Passed down through blood.” She opened her eyes again and Alaska felt like her girlfriend was staring right through her. “Someone in your family is a witch, there’s no doubt about that.”
The words hit Alaska like a freight train; a witch, in her family? It seemed unlikely at best, but if she knew anything about Sharon’s abilities by now, she knew to trust them. She just wished there was an easier way to figure out who in her family was a witch without freaking anyone out; she couldn’t exactly call her mother and say “Hey, mom, I know it’s been a while since I called but I was wondering if anyone in our family practiced witchcraft?” or something like that.
“Does that mean I’m a witch?” Alaska asked softly, still trying to process everything. Sharon threw back her head in laughter, squeezing Alaska’s hands in her own.
“Oh my gods, you’re adorable! It’s not a label you earn, it’s a label you make for yourself. Anyone who practices magick is a witch. And you already make my life pretty damn magickal, baby.”
Alaska giggled at the corny profession of love, but leaned across to kiss Sharon anyway. “You’re so stupid.”
“I won’t argue with that,” Sharon laughed before connecting their lips.
A thousand years could pass and Sharon would never tire of kissing Alaska; every kiss felt like their first, and every touch set her body alight with passion and love. Alaska moved closer, pulling Sharon into her lap once more and letting her straddle her hips as her fingers played with the witch’s dark curls. For once, neither of them were wearing any lip products during the day, allowing Alaska to bask in the softness of Sharon’s lips without the worry of smeared lipstick all over the both of them. It allowed the kiss to be messier and deeper, and Alaska felt Sharon relaxing into her arms as she lost herself in the kiss and let Alaska’s lips soothe all of her stress away.
When they broke apart, Sharon stood up, pulling Alaska with her and holding her close. All was still as Sharon’s arms wrapped around Alaska’s waist and she laid her head against her girlfriend’s chest, feeling relaxed and safe in her embrace. Alaska held Sharon close, as if letting go would allow the witch to slip away from her, breathing in her scent.
Without warning, Alaska felt Sharon’s skin growing warmer, and made a soft noise of surprise when she opened her eyes to see her girlfriend radiating pale pink energy tinged with white. The glow slowly spread from the middle of Sharon’s chest to encompass Alaska as well, until the both of them were surrounded by warmth and rosy light. Alaska felt her heart swell inexplicably and pulled Sharon tighter against her, kissing the top of her head.
“Baby?” she whispered.
“Mm?” Sharon hummed, sounding blissful.
Alaska’s hand stroked down her girlfriend’s spine slowly, soothingly. “What are you doing?”
“Hm?” Sharon looked up at her, blushing deeply as the rose-colored glow began to fade. “Oh. Um. Just a little spell.”
“What for?”
Sharon bit her lip as she tried to figure out a way to answer. “Um… Channeling this feeling into magickal energy, I guess.” Alaska smiled, brushing a stray curl from Sharon’s blushing cheek.
“What feeling, baby?”
“I don’t know how to explain it, just… Holding you, quietly. It feels like, uh, where I’m meant to be,” she confessed nervously, and Alaska pressed her lips against Sharon’s forehead, feeling the smaller woman relax against her.
“Me too, Noodles,” she replied softly, “I’ve always felt like that.”
Sharon looked up at her with a small smile. “Yeah?”
“Mhmm,” Alaska confirmed, giving Sharon’s left hip a squeeze. “Ever since the first time you kissed me, at the ren faire. It felt like I’d been waiting my whole life to be kissed by you.”
“You’re so fuckin’ poetic,” Sharon mumbled, her cheeks turning pink.
Alaska laughed. “That’s what you get for dating a songwriter, babydoll.”
“Oh,” Sharon said softly, blushing crimson now, “I like that one.”
“Babydoll?” A nod. “You’re adorable. I really struggle to believe that girls aren’t throwing themselves at your feet every minute of the day.”
“Even if they were, I wouldn’t want anyone but you,” Sharon admitted quietly, her voice barely a whisper. Alaska kissed her lips tenderly, cupping her cheek with one hand and holding her waist with the other.
“You’re so much softer than I thought you were,” she teased, giving Sharon a peck on the nose. She wrinkled it with a playful smile.
“If you tell a single soul, I’ll turn you into a frog,” she threatened. “And I mean it.” Alaska just giggled at the empty threat and kissed her girlfriend again, feeling like everything was how it was supposed to be.

“So, you have a witch in your family?” Jinkx asked as the coven set up for their Mabon celebration. She was currently slicing apples, both as an offering for the various deities that the coven members worshiped, and also as a snack for later. Alaska nodded as she watched Sharon dig through a box of candles, searching for the right ones.
“I have no idea who it is, and honestly I’m kinda scared to ask,” she admitted.
Jinkx laughed, and Alaska marvelled over the fact that both she and Sharon really did cackle like the witches in movies. “Fair enough. I’m glad you decided to come along. We’re happy to have you.”
“We don’t really let outsiders participate in rituals, but if you’re interested in learning, we can dictate our actions and why we’re doing them,” Raja said kindly as she and Katya entered the kitchen to set down several bottles of wine.
“I don’t want you to go out of your way…” Alaska trailed off, but Katya shrugged.
“Sometimes even we need a reminder.” She grinned at Alaska, laying on a thick Russian accent. “We are not all good with memory, da?” Alaska giggled and Katya bumped her hip against Alaska’s own as she left the kitchen to help with something else, tossing a flirty wink at Alaska. In another life, if she hadn’t been so in love with Sharon, Alaska would have probably fallen for someone like Katya; all things considered, she was happy to be getting to know her better.
“Jinkx, where the fuck are all the Mabon candles we made last year?” Sharon called from the other room. Jinkx sighed, rolling her eyes.
“They’re already out, idiot, I told you where they were!” she shouted back.
Alaska heard Max’s soft voice from the other room; “They’re right here, Sharon, don’t worry.”
“I wasn’t worried, ” Sharon grumbled, forcing Alaska to stifle her giggle in the hope that her girlfriend didn’t hear it.
Once everything was ready in the kitchen, Alaska helped Jinkx bring out the food and drinks that were necessary for the ritual, leaving everything else where it was. Sharon set two stemmed glasses in front of each participant, with the exception of Jinkx and Raja, and Alaska watched as each witch poured wine into their own glass before pouring a little into the second as well.
“Demeter, Earth-Mother, goddess of agriculture and the harvest, we give you this offering as thanks for your blessing,” Pearl said, placing one of her glasses on the altar in the center of the room, and putting an apple beside it. She knelt for a moment, murmuring a prayer before standing and rejoining her coven. Max stepped up next, carrying a glass of wine and a pomegranate.
“Persephone, Pure One, goddess queen of the underworld, we give you this offering and libation and ask you to join in our celebration.” She placed the wine and the fruit on the altar next to Pearl’s offering, and returned to the group. Katya dedicated her “libation” to Isis and Osiris, and Sharon offered wine to Hecate, lighting a red candle on the altar for the goddess.
The four Dianic witches held hands in a small circle while Jinkx and Raja lit more candles on the altar. Jinkx placed a small quartz crystal on top of it, and Raja sprinkled a little of what appeared to be ash over the altar. The Dianic witches disbanded after finishing their short prayer, and Jinkx put on some music. Alaska grinned from the corner, recognizing the voice of Florence Welch and singing along quietly as the witches set a nearby table with food and drinks. Sharon held out her hand for Alaska, twirling her under her arm before wrapping it around her waist and pulling her in for a kiss on the cheek, making the blonde giggle.
“You’re in a good mood, huh?” she grinned.
Sharon shrugged, rocking from side to side in time with the music. “I guess so, yeah. I love celebrating the Sabbats with my sisters, it’s so much better than doing it alone.”
“Sharon, d’you want red or white?” Raja asked as she poured drinks.
“Red for me, white for Lasky,” she answered, and her girlfriend beamed.
“You remembered!”
“Of course I did,” Sharon grinned, handing Alaska a glass. “I actually do pay attention to you, y’know.”
Raja was struggling with the cork of one of the wine bottles, and after passing it around, no one could seem to pry it out, not even with a corkscrew. Alaska held out her hands, asking if she could give it a try, and the other witches shrugged and let her, figuring that the petite girl wouldn’t be able to do much.
Alaska pulled the cork out with a grunt, biceps flexing against her t-shirt, and Sharon’s jaw hit the floor.
“That… was so hot,” she admitted as her girlfriend handed the bottle off to a stunned Raja. Alaska blushed.
“You all loosened it for me, it’s not a big deal.”
“Nah, seriously, that was hot,” Pearl agreed, twirling a lock of hair around her finger.
“C’mon, Alaska, flex for us!” Katya crowed, causing Alaska to blush deeper. She flexed proudly, showing off months of work that equated to rippling biceps, and Sharon pretended to faint.
“Damn, Lasky, do you have a permit for those guns?” Jinkx teased, poking at her tummy. “Oh, wow, you have rock-solid abs, too.” Alaska lowered her arms with a small smile, brushing a strand of blonde hair behind her ear.
“I worked for ‘em,” she said honestly. “I wanted to be strong, so I worked my ass off to get there.”
Katya grinned, giving her a fist bump. “I get it, girl. I used to be a gymnast, almost went Olympic. It takes a lot.”
“Can everyone please stop drooling over my girlfriend and her muscles?” Sharon pouted dramatically, pulling a laugh from Alaska.
“I never thought I’d be jealous of Sharon, ” Jinkx joked, earning a soft laugh from Max and a full-blown cackle from Sharon herself.
“I knew the day would come,” she teased, wrapping an arm around Alaska and kissing her shoulder. “Hands off my girl, all of you. Yes , Katya, that includes you.”
Raja cleared her throat, choking back a laugh. “Okay, okay. Are we gonna stand around, or are we gonna celebrate a kickass Mabon?” Pearl pumped her fist with a small whoop, and the other women let out cheers and a smattering of applause. “We give thanks on Mabon, and per our coven’s tradition, we each have to say something that we’re grateful for right now. Don’t give me that look, Jinkx, you’re the one who started it. Does anyone wanna go first?”
“I will,” Max offered, surprising the rest of the group. Raja nodded.
“Go ahead, girl.”
The grey-haired witch smiled, fiddling with the cup in her hands. “I’m grateful for this coven, I always am. You’re my sisters, and I couldn’t be more thankful to have you in my life, but… there’s something else, too. I got a call from Fame yesterday, and she’s going to be moving back to the U.S. I can’t wait to see her again.”
Katya and Pearl squealed excitedly, hugging Max from either side, and even Sharon was grinning. “Maxie, that’s great!” Pearl exclaimed, suddenly wide awake. Katya was even more excited, asking a thousand questions a minute.
“When is she coming? Is she gonna need somewhere to stay? Oh my god, how is she?”
“She’s wonderful, she misses everyone so much and she’s excited to reconnect,” Max answered with a small smile, flushing a little. “Anyway, that’s what I’m grateful for.”
“That’s amazing, Max,” Jinkx encouraged. “Who’s next?”
“I’ll go!” Katya said. “I’m grateful that you guys give me space when I’m meditating, and I’m grateful that I can learn more every day.” She bounced on her heels happily at the declaration, excited to be sharing.
“I’m grateful to have all of you mentoring me in the ways of our craft,” Pearl agreed. “I love that we all do different things and we all have something to learn from one another.”
“Aww, that’s so sweet,” Jinkx grinned. “I’m grateful for my partner-in-crime and our little dream that’s finally becoming everything we wanted it to be. Love ya, Needles.”
Sharon grinned, raising her glass to Jinkx. “Love ya too, Jinkxy.” She shifted her weight, rubbing Alaska’s hip lightly as she cleared her throat. “Not to be super cliche and gross, but I’m so thankful for Lasky.” Alaska blushed happily, leaning into her girlfriend’s side as she listened to her speak. “Don’t roll your eyes, assholes. The day before we met, I did a spell to attract love, and I didn’t even think it would work, but… clearly it did. I never expected to meet someone who is my other half, someone who I learn a little from every day. I love you, Lasky, and I’m so grateful that you’re in my life.”
Alaska grinned and snuggled against her girlfriend, kissing her on the cheek. “That was dumb,” she mumbled, blushing as the witches let out a chorus of aww ’s and teasing remarks.
“Alaska, do you want to say something you’re grateful for?” Max asked. “You don’t have to if you don’t want to, but we’d like to listen if you have something to say.” The rest of the coven nodded in agreement, and Alaska nodded.
“I guess I’m grateful to have met you all,” she said with a small smile. “I’ve already learned so much, and I can’t wait to learn more about your craft.”
“Raj, you’re up last,” Sharon said, trying to suppress a grin as she squeezed Alaska’s hip.
“Right, well, I’m grateful for the new job, and I’m grateful for you all being here for me through the whole mess of a divorce last year.”
“We still have firewood left over from Beltane if you ever change your mind about burning his shit,” Sharon proclaimed, provoking laughter from the rest of the group. Raja clinked her glass against Sharon’s with a fond eyeroll.
“Alright everyone, Max made this gorgeous apple pie and I’ve been eyeing it for the last ten minutes, so let’s start!” Jinkx said, side-hugging a blushing Max.
The evening was full of conversation and laughter, and Alaska became the willing pupil of the coven as they shared food and drink. She learned a lot about witchcraft as a practice and a little bit about each individual witch’s craft. Sharon did a good job of translating the terms that were unfamiliar to Alaska and would explain things quietly to her girlfriend if she was too shy to ask follow-up questions. Max took off the veil that she often wore to block out everyone else’s thoughts and energies, and managed to confirm that Alaska did have magickal blood somewhere in her line. She also divined that Alaska would soon find out which family member it was, but that this information wasn’t very important.
Sharon read everyone’s cards, pulling Alaska aside at the end to do her reading in private.
“Do you want me to read for the path you should take? Like, whether its magickal or not?”
Alaska hesitated, but nodded. “Yeah. I’m really interested in this stuff, but I’m wondering if it’s right for me or not. I don’t wanna make any mistakes.”
“I get it, pumpkin, trust me,” Sharon smiled, shuffling her deck. Alaska loved watching Sharon read; she’d been mesmerized by her girlfriend as she laid out spread after spread for her coven sisters, offering interpretations that were always stunningly accurate. The other witches trusted her readings implicitly, knowing from past experience that she had a knack for predicting exactly what was to come and recalling moments in the past that she couldn’t possibly have known about. Alaska wasn’t as sure as the coven members were about Sharon’s perfect predictions because she hadn’t experienced very many of them, but she definitely trusted her girlfriend’s interpretations so far.
Sharon set out a spread of three cards, two of them next to each other and the third above them in an almost triangular formation. Flipping them over one by one, the witch pondered the results in silence before opening her mouth to begin her interpretation.
By the time she had finished speaking, Alaska was dumbfounded; her girlfriend had laid everything out with such accuracy that it was almost spooky. Her small smile indicated that she knew which choice Alaska would probably make, but Alaska still wanted to speak her decision aloud.
“I want to do this,” she said confidently. “I want to be a witch.”
