ogres aren’t savages
“Ogre’s are ugly.”
Mak frowned, “I wouldn’t say that.”
“You’re not an Ogre,” Dessa sneered.
He shook his head, slightly confused to the relevance of that, “No.”
“I mean, I guess you could say that Ogres are like Orcs, just uglier and stupid. At least Orcs try to integrate themselves into society.” Mak looked at the floor and grimaced, folding his arms and leaning back in his chair. Sure, he wasn’t pretty fond of his distant cousins either, but somehow hearing them insulted by a human put a sour taste in his mouth.
The student to Mak’s left, a demon-born if the horns where any indication, leaned forward, “You know, I’ve never seen an Ogre, I didn’t think anything could be as ugly as a Orc,” he winced, as if realizing what he had said only after it left his lips, he looked at Mak and smiled apologetically, “no offence.”
Though Mak’s hand tightened he shook his head and tried his best to smile back, “None taken.”
Dessa shrugged, “Well, I’ve never seen one, but my Daddy had a run in with an Ogre when he was younger and one night he told me everything,” everyone around the table inclined eagerly to listen to Dessa spread more rumours, Mak tried not to look too upset, “Ogres are bald, and are really tall. Not like, Giant tall but pretty close, and they have hunchbacks and wrinkles and big fat arms that are wider than my head.” She grinned, “They’re outcasts, have nowhere to live, wander around Orc Land for the most part since its easy to blend in there.”Â
The demon-born turned to look at Mak, “Have you ever seen an Ogre, you know, back in Orc Land?”
Mak resisted the urge to roll his eyes, “No. I’ve never been.” He admitted. His students look surprised by the statement, as if it where impossible for an Orc to be born outside of Orc Land. They all turned back to Dessa, looking more than a little disappointed.
She seemed to have been scowling after being interrupted, but as soon as everyone was once again paying attention to her she seemed to brighten up, straightening up she jumped back into her story, “They don’t dress in normal clothes, they wear rags and the bones of the people they’ve killed.”
The girl beside Dessa gasped, “They kill people!”
Dessa seemed to get even more excited, “Yes!” She exclaimed, “They kill people for money. That’s how my Daddy ran into one, it tried to kill him!” There was a chorus of “oooooos” and “no way!” before Dessa continued. “But he got away, thank God! The Ogre lost him in the streets when he ducked into a cafe.”
A blonde next to the demon-born shook her head, “They can’t kill people, that’s illegal.”
Dessa shook her head, gesturing passionately, “Not for them! They don’t care about the law, they’re savages-” Mak suddenly jumped to his feet and slammed his hand on the table, everyone fell silent.
“They’re not savages!” He shouted, his voice gruff and unfamiliar to his ears. His hand stung and his cheeks where hot with anger, but when he looked around and saw how nervous everyone else at the table looked he immediately felt small, slowly he took his hand off the table and put it behind his back, “I just mean, they’re not evil, or savages, they just live different to us I guess. I don’t know. I’m sorry.”
Dessa seemed to recover from her shock and reclined in her seat, crossing her arms and staring somewhere off to her left, “And I’m just saying if you want someone dead, find an Ogre. They have a blood lust, one they cant control.” Upon saying the last statement she looked Mak up and down, his skin crawled under her gaze.
Mak stepped away from the table, his eyes stung but he refused to cry, instead he turned away from the table and hurried towards the library door. Behind him his students murmured to each other, no doubt comparing him to his Ogre cousins.
When he made it to the hall he let the tears fall, wiping them aware furiously as he struggled to find somewhere safe to hide.
