Star Trek is utopian because baseball is nearly forgotten in the future. Babylon 5 is dystopian because they found room for a baseball diamond in the space UN.

Amanda is Spock's human mother on Star Trek. Because Leonard Nimoy was Jewish and many of Spock's characterization came from the rituals he observed growing up to me he's got a Jewish mother and a Vulcan father.
Susan Ivanova is not terribly observant, she's a Russian Jew who is visited by her Rabbi who helps her cope with her father's death (which happened before the events of the series) by encouraging her to finally sit shiva. He brings her back into the community by traveling from Earth to the station which orbita a planet in the Epsilon Eridani system.
Jumblr tag game:
Favorite media with a Jewish character who actually felt Jewish to you.
Ill go first: the calculating stars (lady astronaut series) the casual way Judaism fit into her life, from Shiva to trying to do something for Shabbos. She may have been mostly secular but the way Judaism fit into her life and worldview was wonderful.
Feel free to share if you want to. (Enjoy the positivity if not) @aguineapigcouldntdothis @edenfenixblogs

I miss when sci fi was allowed to be goofy and weird and long running, with a lot of daily life plots and silly costumes and fun real sets.
nowadays it's trying so hard to be prestige television, and intelligent, without realizing that the best sci fi could be that AND ridiculous. it's all CGI and brooding and people being sad on sad looking gray planets.
I also dislike how modern sci fi is dystopian this, dystopian that.
you know, farscape is technically a dystopia, but it still let itself be a fun one.
maybe your dystopian sci fi needs puppets.

... and why?
Edit: It's my own fault for not clarifying, but the reason Post Earth is in quotation marks doesn't denote the future, but a scifi setting where humanity from Earth branches outward.

folks who skipped s01 of babylon five will never truly get how funny the sinclair-sheridan transition really is.
like sinclair is a 6' tall man with kind brown eyes and a tragic backstory whose presence commands the room without him even saying anything. he solves diplomatic conflicts with a wave of his hand. he's so mysterious. he's larger than life. he's a reincarnated alien. the universe rests on his shoulders. what can't he do. sheridan rolls in bag full of shirts in cute colors, rambles about oranges, gives a speech to an empty deck, delegates negotiation duties to his least diplomatic staff member, who immediately starts a civil war (I'm sorry susan we love you but my god), gets locked out of his own flat. is he ok. can we put him on the heater to dry

Kind of insane of Babylon 5 to say that the extant impulse towards Fascism and Authoritarianism exists within all peoples and cultures, and yet that a better world is still possible and achievable in spite of this impulse. That no matter how dark and bleak the state of things becomes, we can still rise above, and perhaps even succeed in finding and building that better, brighter, world.
