Andor is the 21st century answer to Blake's 7: a scrappy group of rebels and criminals goes up against a well-resourced empire whose leaders dress fabulously. There are craggy-faced character actors, sharp dialogue, and no shortage of quarries.
The Expanse is the 21st century answer to Babylon 5: our heroes face galactic forces that are almost beyond their comprehension, but they still need to deal with equipment maintenance, geopolitical squabbles, and making ends meet. There are grubby space stations with dodgy food, and no one's getting quite enough sleep.
Doctor Who is the 21st century answer to Doctor Who.

I'm rewatching Babylon 5 (again) and afaik this was the first ever scifi show to use 100% cgi for their spacecraft and space scenes and it's genuinely always been one of my biggest inspirations how much FUN they have with that new freedom, exploring all the things they can do in that new medium that were previously impossible with miniatures: ships spinning at improbable speeds and angles! ships with myriad rotating parts! weird camera angles and moves! complex paint jobs! long complicated fiddly bits and awkward delicate shapes! animated organic surface textures! orbiting spheres! the Babylon team just went HOGWILD with ship designs and animation and I honestly think this is how cgi SHOULD be used, celebrating how the medium lets you get weird and colourful with it

How I think the Babylon 5 ambassadorial staff would react to a Roomba:
Delenn: picks it up and brings it to a member of the command staff for explanation
Lennier: takes it apart piece by piece and re-engineers it to function at a higher level
Londo: calls security to remove the offensive device from his quarters
Vir: keeps a respectable distance until someone explains its purpose/intended use
G'Kar: programs said Roomba to follow Londo around his quarters in the first place
Na'Toth: dropkicks the Roomba 5 whole miles

That feeling when you're rewatching Buffy the Vampire Slayer after finally watching Babylon 5 and you realize 25 years late that it was Lord Refa who told Buffy her mom had cancer.

I miss when sci fi was allowed to be goofy and weird and long running, with a lot of daily life plots and silly costumes and fun real sets.
nowadays it's trying so hard to be prestige television, and intelligent, without realizing that the best sci fi could be that AND ridiculous. it's all CGI and brooding and people being sad on sad looking gray planets.
I also dislike how modern sci fi is dystopian this, dystopian that.
you know, farscape is technically a dystopia, but it still let itself be a fun one.
maybe your dystopian sci fi needs puppets.

... and why?
Edit: It's my own fault for not clarifying, but the reason Post Earth is in quotation marks doesn't denote the future, but a scifi setting where humanity from Earth branches outward.

i tried to find a more iconic screencap for that joke than just "the episode i happened to be watching," and the google experience of searching was
Tumblr media
this happened to bowl a strike right down the middle of my current obsession, so with my nerd glasses on, this looks like one of those highlights magazine pictures where a farmer is wearing an ostrich as a hat. every part of this is wrong
atonement is in season four
sinclair isn't in either of those episodes
this conversation never happened
minbari don't do that
but i see why generative ai is so compelling, because i expanded the section to see if there were links to source information so i could trace what happened here (there weren’t) and the scene it cooked up is pretty good
Tumblr media
i heard that in his voice! i went looking for that quote!
(and came up with nothing, not even a fanfic)
if i were a student instead of a niche internet shitposter this would drive me BONKERS. you get a banger quote for your paper but you can't source it because it's not even a quote. i would be sobbing over a word processor at 3 am about it.
btw i tried to go back and screencap the rest of the section because among the unsolicited gifts google ai gave me was a literary symbolism analysis of the scene it made up, but the browser refreshed and it made up a different scene. which was less good. and also didn't happen.
