Spencer Walter Reid liked his sleep.

With a job as time consuming and mentally trying as his own, finding the time to sleep was a luxary he made every attempt to take advantage of. He slept and read in his free time and did his job. Until that night at the club.

Rob Zombie now held a special place in Spencer’s heart. That one rock song- so out of place in a club- had sparked an interest in you. You seemed so comfortable, fluid, and confident while dancing. You knew all the lyrics and even mimed guitaring and drumming (that made Spencer’s face light with a sweet smile). Something made Spencer clumsily introduce himself to you… and something had made you take up Spencer’s offer for dinner.

Dinner had turned to more. And now, four and three/quarter months later, you were staying at Spencer’s.

Your voice floated through the apartment, as well as the cords to a song Spencer didn’t seem to recognize.

He pushed the blanked off of him and stood up. After adjusting his sweats, Spencer pushed his glasses up to his nose. He padded out to the kitchen where you swayed in the kitchen, cooking breakfast.

“Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky,” you sang, whisking something. The movement of your hips swaying was visible through the oversized Metallica shirt that hang from your shoulders. “Smooooke on the waterrr.”

Spencer slunk his arms around your waist and rested his chin on your shoulder. “Good morning, metalhead,” Spencer greeted raspily. You skillfully pressed a smiley face into the sizzling pancake with dark chocolate chips.

“Good morning, handsome,” you replied, turning to face him.

Your body moved to the beat of the song, hips liquid under Spencer’s palms. “Burn it down,” you whispered lowly to the song, grazing Spencer’s lips with your own.

Spencer pressed his palms into you, bringing you closer to him. He tilted his head, watching you carefully. You smirked at him, eyes wild. Spencer leaned in and captured your lips in his, letting you guide him. Maybe this was better than sleep, Spencer thought.

If this isn't doable, just let me know, and I'll come up with another. I have so many songs I love, and it's hard to narrow it down to one. I just went by that old question, "If you could only listen to one song the rest of your life, what would it be?" And mine would be "Enter Sandman." But if that's too heavy, then I can totally come up with another, I'm all over the board with my musical taste. Unfortunately, I'm not deep with why I like what I like though...I just go by the sound. If I like the sound, I can listen to some pretty awful lyrics. Sometimes I don't even pay attention to the lyrics, which can get me into trouble. I'm more focused on the instrumentation, the beat, the stuff going on in the background, etc.

Hunter got up from his bed and stepped outside into the somewhat fresh air of Pabu. He leaned against the ledge of the parapet that enclosed their patio. No matter how many times he rubbed his eyes or closed them, he could still vividly see those eyes looking back at him. Hemlock’s eyes bored into his soul. 

Usually, his nightmares revolved around the close calls they had in the past, or seeing Tech fall from the railcar.

However, ever since they went to Tantiss to get both you and Omega back, all he could see every time he closed his eyes was you being held hostage by Hemlock. 

It wasn’t until after he rescued did he find out you had pushed Omega out of the way when Hemlock was about to slap cuffs on her, only to be locked to the madman. At this point he didn’t care who he held hostage, he just needed insurance to get away. However, seeing him hold the blaster to your head, the blood trickling down your face, and the fact you almost went over the railing with him … it’d been the single most frightening moment of his life. 

Now, it was impossible for him to sleep through the night, he felt he needed to keep one eye on you at all times, gripping you as tight as he could while he slept to make sure you were still there every time he opened his eyes. 

A loud sigh of exhaustion escaped his lips, as he rubbed his eyes. He took in a deep breath, trying to think of anything other than those terrifying moments where he almost lost you. 

You stood at the entrance of your house seeing Hunter’s shoulders tensing up under his shirt. You knew he was having nightmares, it was evident from how exhausted he looked, how tight he held you at night, the number of times he stirred from your bed in the middle of the night. 

You gave him time and space, waiting for him to come to you to talk, but he didn’t and now it been three months. 

You slowly walked over to him, wrapping your arms around his waist and pressing a kiss to the middle of his back, “Talk to me, Hunter. I can see your suffering. Talk to me.”

His hand rested against yours as he took in a deep breath relaxing breath for the first time that night. His fingers gently stroked yours, he couldn’t look at you yet. Not feeling as though he may have failed in some way.

You shifted one hand to lay it on top of the one currently stroking your fingers, on any other night that soothing touch would’ve devolved into a more passionate and intense evening, but right now you wanted him to focus, to put aside his worries. 

“I’m here, cyare.” You reinforced, “I’m right here, talk to me. Tell me what’s going on.”

He let out a shaky sigh, wet and trembling with fear as he fought back his tears, “I … I can’t lose you.”

“You haven’t,” you mumbled into his back, pressing your forehead against it. “I’m right here. I’ll always be right here. I’m not going anywhere.”

There was a warm lump rising in his chest aiming for his throat, he felt it was all too real, too much and too painful. 

“Whatever it is, it won’t change the fact that I’m here. I’m holding you. My heart is beating in sync with yours. You’re taking my hand,” you interlocked your fingers with his, squeezing tightly, “we’re alright. We’re safe. Omega is safe. We’re right here.”

He gripped your hand tighter than he ever had before, as his tears started to stream down his face, he turned in your arms, and buried his face into the crook of your neck. His tears dampened your shoulder, but you didn’t push him away, instead you wrapped your arms around him tighter, holding him as close and as tight as you could. “It’s okay, it’s okay.”

“When … when you almost went over the rail… I thought … I thought I was going to lose you… like I lost Tech… I can’t …” his voice was wet, broken, full of pain, “It’s like something or someone keeps taking away all the good things in my life… or almost taking them away. First, it was Crosshair. Then Tech. Omega. Then I got back Crosshair and Omega, only to lose her, you and the Marauder.”

“But you got Omega and I back, we’re here.”

“But I could’ve lost you…” he pulled his head back to look into your eyes, “What if next time I can’t? What if next time …” 

“We’re here because of you, Crosshair, Wrecker, Echo.” Your own eyes welled up with tears as you saw how heartbroken he was, “You’re not going to lose me, I’m going to stay right here, regardless of whoever or whatever tries to take me away.” You reached up and wiped his tears, “We’re stronger together, always. So take my hand and never let go, because I’ll be here, always.”

Sometimes when I listen to music I mentally associate what I’m listening to the Papas, so I thought it would have been fun to imagine a 10 songs playlist for/of each Papa. I have chosen the songs by their personalities, the kind of music they have done and the general vibes I get when I listen to the songs.

I see him sitting on his couch by the fire, immersed in his voluminous, rich vestments. The lyrics to Until it Sleeps remind me of Shadowheart’s curse. The whole song really reads well from her POV. It is PERFECT for her struggle with Shar.

Probably this post will be similar to a declaration of love, but I absolutely do not care. But it will be sincere.

November 23rd, 2021, when I was on Discord with my friends, I heard The Unforgiven for the first time. It was love at first listen. The whole next day I listened to this track until my headphones sat down, admiring the depth of the text, the magical vocals and the incredible arrangement. Who knew that this is how my love for metal and Metallica would begin, and what path we would overcome ..

You, along with one wonderful person who introduced me to your work, became rays of light and hope in my cold and dark winter, which continues to this day. When I was in despair and drowned in my thoughts, when I was scared to listen to the explosions outside the window, when I was sleeping on a mattress in the hallway - I just turned on the Metallica tracks, and your divine voice instantly wrapped me in a fictitious blanket in which I became warm and calmly. The lyrics penetrated into the very heart, hit the bull's-eye from the very first attempt to find out the meaning of the song a little deeper. That is why you and Metallica will always have a special place in my heart. When there was no one around, even the closest ones, I immersed myself in your Universe and let go of all the problems.

I admire your voice. Years have passed, but your live performances are still as powerful as they were 40 years ago. Not every artist in their 60s will be able to gather a full stadium of people and work out two hours of singing, after having problems with vocal cords. Thinking about Metallica´s video for Until It Sleeps and I came to these conclusions:

a) if you want to understand the MV, have good look at work of Hieronymus Bosch

b) the "Christ" from Ecce Homo (2:35) looks, at least to me, a lot of like Cliff

c) there are colours assigned to each of the four:

hi, thank you so much for asking, really!! and apologizes in advance for such long answers, as you can see, i'm just being “a bit” indecisive, hopefully I won't bore you too much with it!

1. Song of the year?

(for real, why such a seemingly simple question turned out to be the most difficult one. it's impossible to choose just one!)

czxcohjkhv okay, the first to come to mind is "Stargazer" by Rainbow, so gonna go with it. the drum intro, the sheer onomatopoeia that Ronnie's vocal approach always is, the astonishing guitar solo that practically spoilers the plot by being so evocative as well, the fucking intensity that this song is overflowing with??? I can never be normal about it, just can't. about their “Catch the Rainbow” (live 1977 Munich version specifically) neither. most ethereal ballad ever (and nope, Blackmore's solos don't even ruin the “balladiness” of it, just add to the vibe).

out of Black Sabbath's songs, i'm very much torn between Children of the Sea, Die Young, The Sign of the Southern Cross, After All (The Dead), Time Machine, Sins of the Father. and out of Dio's own stuff — Like the Beat of a Heart, My Eyes, Evil on Queen Street, Evilution, As Long As It's Not About Love, Shame on the Night. hhhng they're all too good, how am I supposed to choose anything, even one per band.

when it comes to music that doesn't have anything to do with RJD (yeah, I have been listening to it this year. sometimes), I still can't get enough of Queensrÿche's “Take Hold of the Flame” (especially live in Tokyo 1984). *in loud whisper* but also “The Story of One Sky” by Dimash, “Until It Sleeps” by Metallica (whoops accidentally became obsessed with it years after first hearing it), “Incense and Myrrh” by Arch/Matheos, and “Between Two Worlds” by Uriah Heep. (can you tell how tricky it is to choose just one..?) and out of this actual year's releases (but tbh I haven't really been keeping up) most memorable was Liliac's “Carousel” or Metallica's “Screaming Suicide”.

and the most satisfying one to play on guitar is definitely “the Last in Line���, it's a literal dopamine feast for my brain for some reason.

2. Album of the year?

have admittedly been listening more to live performances than to studio recordings this year so it'd be easier to just list specific concerts but gonna try pick a latter one after all. actually I think the album i've most often listened to from start to finish is “Lock up the Wolves”, it just flows very nicely in its entirety. the second place would likely be the masterpiece that is “Heaven and Hell”. as for the album that's made me spin it in my head most intensely it's “Magica” bc it's a concept one but in the least straightforward manner possible.

3. Favorite musical artist / group you started listening to this year?

my most prominent discovery of the year was probably Fates Warning (and their more modern incarnation Arch/Matheos), I believe. or Jethro Tull (and nope, I legit haven't even heard about them until recently, what of it).

but there's also a musician who's basically defined this year for me and whose voice i've been listening to almost daily (and who probably needs no introduction at this point). I have by no means only started listening to him this year though (c'mon, Blind Guardian cover of “Don't Talk to Strangers” was literally one of the very first songs to get me into metal in the first place; and my most favorite Sabbath song, back when I didn't give a damn about different lineups and was just vibing to the songs I liked most regardless of their albums, was from the Dio era). the difference is that only last December I first heard a live recording of his voice and was overwhelmed by the unparalleled level of intensity in it. bc ultimately his magic is so much more than just his voice, it's the laser-pointed intention behind every single word and the multi-layered thought-provoking lyrics and the everything hiding between the lines and the neverending love and generosity. it's not even sth easily convertible into words so i'd probably better stop being insufferable about him right here and now but the point is that Ronnie has had such a huge impact on my life that goes beyond anything that I ever thought any musician or even just anyone who i've never technically gotten to meet would be capable of having. but this impact has in fact helped heal sth very deep down so just... yeah.

4. Movie of the year?

i'll probably go with “predestination” (2014). there's just sth very intricate in all the levels of meaning in that movie, and especially in the way the main character is queer and their queerness is used of all things as a metaphor for quite a lot of interesting stuff. ngl I do have some issues with this movie but honestly considering that the short story it's based on was written in the fucking 50s and was still focusing on it is impressive already despite its flaws (also I love how the movie extrapolated and expanded on the original premise).

the most rewatched movie this year though would definitely be the “dreamers never die” documentary, no contest here (not crying at the very end of it is a challenge I always fail tbh).

oh and a honorable mention to “Nimona”, really loved that one.

5. TV show of the year?

realized only now that I haven't really watched lots of tv shows this year, huh. I think the only thing I did watch was the second season of “shadow and bone” and that's it, even though there's lots of other stuff i've been meaning to catch up with.

21. What’s something new about your place of residence (room, home, or general location) now vs the start of the year?

hmm i've got a new pin board, does it count?? it's bigger than my old one (and made from a different material, which turned out to be better) but i'm somehow already running out of space on it XD it was nice though to rearrange everything on it in a more systematic way rather than just slapping new bits of paper onto whenever I found a free spot (and to add Silvy's gifts there💜).

another new (like. literally last week new) thing is actually on my computer but it's sth i've been wishing for for literal years so it gets a mention anyway and it's an amp simulator. bc to be able to just plug my guitar in and build up the sound I want from scratch (well, not necessarily, there are tons of presets, it's just a very rare one that sounds well enough with solos imho) and have so much control over it, even over how much distortion I get depending on how hard I hit the strings? it's divine, i'm telling you. took me a while to figure out what exactly I need but damn, it's just so freaking awesome

Hi, this is the niche rant website, right? I need somewhere to scream into the void about how utterly baffling the new Apocalyptica single is. For the record, I'm a huge metal fan, but far from an expert on either Apocalyptica or Metallica, so everything I'm about to say is like... 25% verified.

Brief history, experimental Finnish metal band Apocalyptica started in 1996 as a gimmick. An extremely well done gimmick in which they covered Metallica songs using 4 cellos. This pretty unambiguously ruled, and they really took off as a result.

Over their next few albums, they gradually switched from Metallica (and occasional other artists) covers to their own original works. They started attracting huge names in metal and hard rock to do guest vocals (Till Lindemann, Corey Taylor, they had a massive radio hit with Adam Gontier of 3 Days Grace fame) and really became a staple of mainstream hard rock music. It was around this time I personally started losing interest, although their 2010 album rules, especially the song they did with Joseph Duplantier of Gojira. Still, it felt like they drifted pretty far from their original vision. No hard feelings, it rules to see some classical musicians make it huge in metal and I recognize I've been a metalhead too long and the elitism creeps in if I'm not careful.

And now the year is 2024. They haven't released a Metallica cover in 8 years since they rereleased their first album with some bonus tracks. Pretty sure the last cover they did before that was Until it Sleeps in 2000. And Spotify is telling me they have a single! With two Metallica songs! Which two you ask?

The Unforgiven II and The Four Horseman with Robert fucking Trujillo.

Let's start with The Unforgiven II. This is a weird choice, but not totally out there. They covered The Unforgiven, it's kind of an obvious choice given it has such a heavy melodic component, and it's wildly popular as the "4th track" (historically significant for Metallica) on The Black Album, the album that brought Metallica massive mainstream success. That album is also considered one of the last "great" albums before their precipitous decline. Which is why The Unforgiven II, from 1997's Reload, isn't really considered... Great? It's ok? Kind of unnecessary? It has the agonizing line, "Because I'm Unforgiven too" in it and I'm not even kidding. But whatever, new Metallica gets a lot of hate but some people love it, maybe someone in Apocalyptica is a hardcore Reload fan.

And then there's The Four Horseman, from Metallica's first album, Kill 'Em All. Great song, but pretty notable as the song that no member of Metallica has the rights to? Ex-Metallica member and notorious shitheel Dave Mustaine wrote that one, and felt sufficiently possessive of it to rerelease it with a different title/lyrics in Megadeth's first album.

And then there's the guest musician. Robert Trujillo has been the bassist of Metallica since 2003. The lineup of Metallica has stayed remarkably stable over their 40 (!) year career since the 80s, with the exception of their bassist. Some fans (unfairly, imo) attribute their decline to the death of their bassist Cliff Burton in a 1986 tour bus accident, and 1992-2003 is easily Metallica's weakest era, culminating in the widely reviled St Anger album. So Robert Trujillo had massive shoes to fill, partially with the pressure to be the impetus that brought Metallica "back". His first album with them, Death Magnetic, was appreciated as a step in the right direction. Can you hear the bass in that album? No, not really, thanks to Rick Rubin butchering it in post, but that's fine. I know next to nothing about Robert Trujillo, but from what I can tell he's pretty widely accepted as a force for good in Metallica's muddy history. He's released 3 full studio albums with Metallica, and an experimental shock horror project known as Lulu in which Metallica and Lou Reed explored an alternate universe in which listening to music did not inspire joy, but rather abject despair.

It's honestly pretty rad for a member of Metallica to do a song with Apocalyptica. And it's not even Lars! But specifically a song, arguably not even owned by Metallica, with the one current member of Metallica who was not there when it was recorded. They could have chosen any song out of the 3 albums and 1 war crime that Robert Trujillo contributed to! He helped write The Unforgiven III!!!!

So we have a single that's Apocalyptica seemingly nodding to their roots, with two songs that come from drastically different eras of Metallica, with a huge guest star that comes from neither era on genuinely the strangest song they could have chosen for him.

Anyways, that was the whirlwind of bewilderment I encountered this morning on being told there are new Apocalyptica covers of Metallica, and I promise they are not the two you would guess.

Pretty sure the next song they're doing is To Live is to Die with no lyrics and James Hettfield on drums.
