Theater-gate and the Assumptions of an ES SamCait Late March “Timeline”

An anon was sent to an NST ( @bestof60 ) about the theater picture. I didn’t want to hijack that blogger’s post with a long response, so I am commenting separately here. This was the anon:

“The pic was always in Dublin while both Cait and Sam were saying they were elsewhere. Why the diversion? If it is only friends going to the theater, no problem. No need for a cover up. And no, Tony was not there.”

The reality is this anon is making an assumption about Sam and Cait creating a “diversion” to hide their going to a play together in Ireland. Below the cut of this post, I will challenge this assumption in detail.

BTW, this is even more of an assumption because as far as I know we don’t know for sure the photo was from Dublin. The last I heard, a certain ES was only “80%” certain that the photo was taken in Dublin. If someone knows definitely where and when the photo was taken, please let me know so we can resolve some of this. But until I see this information, it is all speculation.

I also want to point out that Sam often tried to keep his rendezvous with both MacKenzie and Abbie under the radar. Yet, ES never assumed because he did so that those relationships were real. Double standard much?

An ES “Timeline” for a Secret SamCait Rendezvous

To better understand all the assumptions ES are making about this photo, let’s look at a “timeline” of SamCait activity around that weekend that one anon on an ES blog thought was relevant to understanding the context of the photo.

“My timeline: March 24th: Cait liked an erotic photo with Wicked Game song lyrics and the tag #thinking on you; March 25th: Sam posted a photo of him in Hawaii. Cait comments ‘making love to the land’; March 26th Sam in Glasgow by the morning and goes later with Cait to London and both watch Cillian’s play; March 27th: both watch Gillian’s play. Cait posts Yeats love poem; March 30th: they go to Ireland til April 1st when they come back to London meeting Cree. April 2nd both back to Glasgow.”

The blogger who received the anon agreed with the timeline. So this is what at least some ES are thinking. They believe that between March 30th and April 1st Sam and Cait went to Ireland together--but they were also with each other for four days before the Irish trip and for a day or two afterwards.  So let’s look at the timeline and some of the assumptions behind it.

Questioning the ES Timeline

First of all, this anon claims that Sam and Cait saw three plays sometime between March 26th and March 31st: “Cillian’s play,” “Gillian’s play,” and the unknown Dublin play.

THREE PLAYS IN FIVE OR SIX DAYS!

I’m exhausted just thinking about it!

Yes, I know that Sam and Cait are actors but that is a lot of concentrated theater in a very short period of time. Most people would be emotionally exhausted by it. In my experience, live theater resonates at a deeper level for an audience than film or TV does. The emotions in the room at times can feel palpable. It makes more sense to me that Cait went to “Cillian’s play” as well as the Dublin play (assuming she saw it in Dublin that weekend) and that Sam went to “Gillian’s play” as well as the Dublin play.

I might believe each of them saw two plays in close proximity. But three is pushing it!

Below the cut, I will look at the specific claims in the timeline and point out when there isn’t sufficient evidence to support the implicit assumptions. I will also challenge the belief the ES have that Sam and Cait “lied” to the fandom to cover up a romantic rendezvous.

“March 24th: Cait liked an erotic photo with Wicked Game song lyrics and the tag #thinking on you.”

Yes, Cait liked that post--but we have no idea why she did.

She could have liked the photo &/or she might have liked the lyrics &/or she might have liked the hashtag. Furthermore, some ES seemed to assume she was missing Sam. If she was missing anyone, maybe it was Tony. Maybe Tony was away at the time. We have no idea. Honestly, it is total speculation why Cait liked that post. 

“March 25th: Sam posted a photo of him in Hawaii. Cait comments ‘making love to the land.’”

Well, yes Sam did post an older photo from Hawaii. 

Cait’s comment (especially when you see the whole thing) just looks like she is having fun teasing Sam. It appears that some ES are thinking there is some “subtext” about the comment regarding their having both been in Hawaii (within weeks of each other). There is honestly no solid evidence to indicate they had ever been there together. So if they hadn’t been there together, there was no subtext that I can think of. Otherwise, it is all just speculation.

“March 26th Sam in Glasgow by the morning and goes later with Cait to London and both watch Cillian’s play.”

Yes, Sam was in Glasgow on the 26th. Of course the ES wanted to assume he left immediately. They thought it was telling that he wasn’t in the actual photo of the gym. (Maybe it was because he was taking the video?)

They also believed that his tour of the studio was an old video from January. it might have been but it is also possible this is a recurring series of videos for Sam. Perhaps each time he returns to the studio after a long break he will show himself walking past the photos. (For more about the video controversy see this POST.) The reality is we don’t know whether the video was old or not. But to assume Sam posted it as a way of hiding his rendezvous with Cait is a huge assumption.

And yes, Cait went to see Cillian’s play. But I don’t think she went with Sam.

The ES found this PHOTO of someone sitting at the Barbican Theatre, who looked like Sam when the photo was lightened.

However, when I found a photo of the audience for that same play at the same time, it appeared that Faux Sam was sitting next to some balding man and someone with light hair. Not Cait. (As a matter of fact, there were also two people in the audience who looked a bit like Cait and Tony. I circled them in red. It was probably not them but who knows?)

From what I could tell, there was no one in the wider audience PHOTO who looked like Sam and Cait together. So my assumption is that Sam was not there.

“March 27th: both watch Gillian’s play. Cait posts Yeats love poem.”

On April 3rd, Sam commented on this IG post:

We don’t know exactly when Sam went to see this play. The ES assume it was March 27th. Who knows? We also do not know that Sam and Cait both went to see the play. This is total speculation on the ES’ part.

On the 27th, Cait did post a Yeats poem but again the ES made the huge assumption that the poem had something to do with Sam. Most likely it had something to do with Tony--or maybe she just liked the poem, or the sky reminded her of the poem.

“March 30th: they go to Ireland til April 1st when they come back to London meeting Cree.”

No idea how this ES knows when they went to Ireland during that time period (if in fact they both did). And if they went to Ireland, we also don’t know if Tony was with them. Yes, some anon was saying they knew he wasn’t at the play. But Tony might have been in Ireland but didn’t want to see the play. That doesn’t mean that Tony didn’t stay with Cait’s folks while Sam and Cait went to the play. 

We also don’t know that if Sam went to the play with Cait that afterwards he stayed with her folks. He might have and he might not have. But even if he did, it doesn’t mean anything. Friends do stay with friends’ families from time to time you know.

Yes, it was Mother’s Day weekend but it doesn’t mean that Sam’s being there had any special meaning, other than he was a good friend of Cait’s. They could have seen the play together because they both knew someone who was in it, or because Tony didn’t want to see the play and Sam was willing to go with Cait. We simply don’t know.

And in terms of Mother’s Day, I saw no evidence of Cait’s mother being at the theater. You would think that taking one’s mother to the theater would be a nice present for Mother’s Day, if the primary reason Cait was in Ireland was to celebrate Mother’s Day with her mother. So maybe Cait was in Ireland for two reasons (the play and her mother) and Sam was in Ireland for one reason (the play.)

The reality is Sam and Cait were both off the SM location grid at that point. Valbo asked his friend in a 03.29.19 IG story if he thought that Sam had run away:

So we don’t know where Sam was. IMO, he didn’t try to make us think he was in Glasgow and he didn’t try to make us think he was in London. We simply had no idea where he was.

But it looks like by April 1st he may have been back in London with Steven. But honestly, I don’t know when this photo was taken.

It is also a pure assumption that Cait was with them because we have no evidence of this. 

“April 2nd both back to Glasgow.”

Cait posted about the Lady in Red cross stitch portrait on April 2nd. So she had clearly been in the studio that day. She also posted the photo of herself and her script on April 3rd. 

The assumption by some ES was that Cait was on the Eurostar when she took the script photo, suggesting she had taken it at some point when she was in London. This quickly became “canon” even though it makes little sense. The Eurostar goes to the Continent and not to Glasgow, so it would have had to have been a very old photo. Also the interior of wherever Cait was doesn’t look like the Eurostar. Here are some interior photos of the Eurostar based on a google search.

The interior in Cait’s photo doesn’t look like any of them as far as I can tell.

It seems to me that photo was probably taken in a car on April 2nd or 3rd as Cait was being driven to the studio. 

Finally, we have Sam posting this IG video from London on 04.04.19. Of course it was bright and sunny in the video and it had been overcast and raining on the 4th. But maybe Sam took it the previous day, which was more sunny.

Lots of ES assumed that Sam was hiding something because of his London post. Sam’s posting the video perhaps a day late doesn’t mean that Sam was “hiding” the fact that he had previously been in Dublin by pretending to be in London. If he had been in Dublin he might have flown back to London on the 1st. We don’t know. But to assume (which I think some ES did) that Sam was somehow trying to pretend he was in London when he wasn’t because of a supposed rendezvous with Cait is a stretch.

The first inkling we have of Sam being in Glasgow is this IG story from April 4th. 

I have no idea why the ES anon thought Sam was back in Glasgow on April 2nd. However, it really doesn’t matter if he was back on the 2nd or the 4th. He had to get back for the read through that week. 

Conclusion

To me it is a huge stretch to think that Sam and Cait lied about where they were to cover up a romantic rendezvous. As far as I can tell, they simply didn’t say where they were during that weekend. Is it their job to inform us every step of the way as to where they are? Of course not. They are entitled to some privacy.

And honestly, given how the ES misconstrue everything they do together as friends could you blame them if they didn’t want to announce to the world that they went to a play together? 

The assertion that Sam and Cait saw all three plays together is also an assumption.

The belief that it was significant that Sam was with Cait in Ireland for Mother’s Day weekend supposes that Cait’s primary reason for being in Ireland was to see her mother. Maybe not. Maybe the play was a whole separate thing that had to do with maybe a mutual friend being in the cast or Cait not wanting to go to the play alone (if Tony didn’t want to go or wasn’t available). The fact that Cait’s mother wasn’t with them at the play (which would have been a nice gift for her on Mother’s Day) suggests the play was an entirely separate thing.

The meaning of Cait’s  liking the erotic photo post and her comment about the Hawaii photo and her posting the Yeats poem is all speculation. We simply don’t know what she meant by doing any of those things. (And if you doubt that, think about what prompts you to like or not like anything on social media. There are often myriad reasons why you choose to like different things.)

In short, as far as I’m concerned, the theater-gate photo is not the “smoking gun” that some ES imagine it to be. It doesn’t really mean much of anything other than two friends went to a play together for unknown reasons. JMHO
