EE Lyrics Study: teeth/bones/nails

Hello! This is my first "lyric study" for the band Everything Everything and the topic is: BONES/TEETH/NAILS.

Basically, when listening to their music, I kept noticing words related to this topic and I was curious if the topic actually existed across their discography. I marked every lyric that included key words:

bone, skull, teeth, vertebrae, fossil, etc.

I did a little research to see the cultural significance or any other meaning/symbolism of these words. I didn't want to dive too much into the actual meaning of the lyrics*** or the greater context of the song, but instead looked at the overall patterns of the key words.

I notice that in EE's lyrics, bones/teeth are mostly used to evoke images of graphic things being done to a body or to liken humans to other animals/creatures. There's mentions of bones both inside a living human and in someone/something that's dead.

Personally, I interpret these uses as a more shocking or uncomfortable way to refer to those parts of the body (e.g. teeth instead of smile, clavicle instead of collar, skull instead of head), which is pretty on-brand for EE's provocative lyrics/themes.

***I feel like we'll never know exactly what Jonathan means when he writes (lol seems like he doesn't know sometimes either) so I didn't want to get caught up in guessing what he meant. I find it tiring to try to figure out 'why did he say that?' and instead just enjoy and find my own meaning :)

“Don’t swear to God, he never asked you / It’s not his heart you drove a knife through” from “In The Dark” by Bring Me The Horizon

Really I could say that the whole of “Blast Doors” by Everything Everything is my favorite, so much that I have it all memorized, but the lines “ Whether you're a have not or a have I got a question / Are you living dead or is it some kind of possession?” are my favorite of the whole thing

The entire second verse and pre chorus from “Get Your Wish” by Porter Robinson made me cry the first time I heard it: “Don't say you lose just yet / Get up and move ahead / And not only for yourself' / Cause that's your role / The work that stirred your soul / You can make for someone else / One day you choke, your urges overflow / And obsession wears you down / But don't you waste the suffering you've faced /  It will serve you in due time.”

The second half of the first verse in “2econd 2ight 2eer” by Will Wood is both clever and just fun to sing so I love it: I’m cut from a different kind of meat More than you can chew, hard to swallow me Forget bored stiff, I got rigor mortis, call it morbid curiosity How can I commit to reality, when my third eye’s open and I like what I see? Baby, I may be crazy but I didn’t lose it, no I set it free

Putting Everything Everything on here twice cause part of the reason I love them so much is their weird lyrics but the third and fourth verse on “Armourland” is a favorite of mine because of the imagery it evokes for me: “What if the first step was leaving? / And stepping outside in the cold end? / Face in the smoke and you're lurching / Down the alleys, kiss me / And how many lives lived in fear now? / And who do we call in the end, end? / There was a pattern of errors /  There was a life here to mend, mend / I wasn't watching, the cold passed / Through my body slowly /  And echoes of all wars are beaming / Rattling 'round in the end, end”

a fellow everything everything enjoyer..... you have amazing taste in music along with incredible art! apologies if this has been asked before, but i'm curious: what albums are your favourite? which songs do you like most? which songs have the coolest lyrics that stick with you? (ee lyrics are so good and i wish more people knew about them)

ive had this in my drafts forever cuz im so indecisive but after the last ask I might as well post this i tend to go through phases where i frequent one or two albums more than the others and it just rotates like that but I'd have to say Man Alive is my all time fave Its the only album I own physically (planning on getting all the cds someday!) and has made me cry on more than one occasion T _ T aside from that i’ve been listening to a lot of Arc and Raw Data Feel recently! As far as songs/lyrics go, Armourland, Final Form, & The Wheel are ones I return to thematically a lot, but i honestly think one of my favorite songs I dont get a chance to talk a lot about is the b-side Luddites and Lambs its just such a fun song with tons of good lines

omg it literally took me 2 days to respond to this but in my defense I have a job and also I had to think bc they have sooo many songs I love

first of all MY KZ UR BF is one of my top 5 songs of all time from any artist (I even drew a gif based on the way I think it sounds!) and so is schoolin'. Both of those songs are from Man Alive, but Get To Heaven is for sure their best album it's literally perfect. To The Blade is the best opening song I've heard on any album tbh I wish I could hear through that album for the first time again because it starts quiet and then you can pinpoint the EXACT moment the album like...starts in the explosion of To The Blade. it's so good, that moment still hasnt gotten old it still gets me excited when I listen to that song (often)
