Books of the Month: Oct 2023
If I consistently make these posts halfway through the next month, they're no longer late, that's just the posting schedule now. Anyway, I read some books in October (including Agatha Christie's Hallowe'en Party on Halloween itself, because I had the day off and thought I should read something nominally seasonal). Here are a couple that I recommend:
Our Wild Farming Life: Adventures on a Scottish Highland Croft (Lynn Cassells, Sandra Baer): This is one of those books that you can likely only find by 1) somehow already knowing about it (via British television, I guess) or 2) wandering through the nonfiction section in your local library and deciding it looks interesting. (Guess which I did!) It is a nonfiction book about the two authors (occasionally the first person narration makes it clear that Lynn was the main one actually writing the book) buying a farm in Scotland and making it work! I enjoyed this book because it was clearly a book written by someone who can write fairly well but not super lyrically or anything, and who loves what she's writing about. Lots of things to appeal to me - they balance a love for nature and a desire to do everything sustainably with a respect for the local farming community - but I think it is worth reading for others as well!
Snow Falling on Cedars (David Guterson): This one I found in a Goodwill. It was interesting to read because I did read it once before, in maybe early high school, and remembered very little. And what I did remember is enjoying the older jaded veteran character; but on this read, he's actually not far from my own age and while "jaded" still describes him, I think a better word is "depressed." Anyway, a good book about a small, maritime community (so again, things I that I specifically like) and how people are very complicated. The main "present day" setting is a 1950s murder trial, with flashbacks to WWII and the internment of Japanese-American citizens. But the ending also suggests that, despite their complications, many people are basically good, and I appreciate that, too.

EYES OF LAURA MARS (1978) – Episode 232 – Decades of Horror 1970s
‘I remembered that I was sneakin’ out the back door of the bar. So I said to myself, man, I said,”What the *fuck* are you doin’, man? Sneakin’ out the back door, runnin’ away, man, from what? I mean, you didn’t do nothin’. Nobody can prove that you did nothin’ because you did not do nothin’.”’ As usual, he had an elaborate alibi. Join your faithful Grue Crew – Doc Rotten, Bill Mulligan, Chad Hunt, and Jeff Mohr, along with guest Dirk Rogers – as they discuss Eyes of Laura Mars (1978), … a movie with a script co-written by John Carpenter?

Synopsis: Fashion photographer Laura Mars, whose photographs contain violent images, develops the ability to see through a killer’s eyes. Detective John Neville notes striking similarities between her art photos and those of actual crime scenes and realizes that she can see what is happening through the eyes of the killer. Mars and Neville join forces to identify the killer before she, too, becomes a victim.

John Carpenter wrote a script and it became Eyes of Laura Mars (1978). However, there was so little similarity between the finished product and his original script that Carpenter had little more to do with the film. Even so, Faye Dunaway, Tommy Lee Jones, Rene Auberjonois, Brad Dourif, and Raul Julia add credence to the movie along with Irvin Kershner’s direction and some very Giallo-like touches. Where will the Grue-Crew, joined by Dirk Rogers, come down amid the muddled aspects of Eyes of Laura Mars? You’ll just have to check it out to find out. Incidentally, did you notice Brad Dourif was in the film?
At the time of this writing, Eyes of Laura Mars (1978) is available to stream from Tubi and multiple PPV sources. It is available on physical media as a Blu-ray formatted disc from Kino Lorber Studio Classics and from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1970s is part of the Decades of Horror two-week rotation with The Classic Era and the 1980s. In two weeks, the next episode, chosen by Bill, will be Black Noon (1971), a TV movie, horror western starring Roy Thinnes, Lynn Loring, Yvette Mimeaux, Ray Milland, and Henry Silva. Mr. Mulligan tells us it’s pretty good.
We want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans: comment on the site or email the Decades of Horror 1970s podcast hosts at [email protected].

📖✨ Monthly Reading Wrap-Up
September 2024 Edition
📕 Diavola by Jennifer Marie Thorne Fantasy/Horror | ★★★★½ (4.5/5) A young woman discovers dark secrets lurking in the seemingly idyllic Italian town she moves to, as she becomes entangled with a sinister entity. Review: The toxic family dynamic was rage-inducing but her growth was so satisfying.
📗 Lady Tan's Circle of Women by Lisa See Historical Fiction | ★★★★¼ (4.25/5) A story of friendship, healing, and the remarkable life of Lady Tan, a woman physician in 15th-century China who challenged societal expectations. Review: A beautiful book with characters who are very much a product of their time but their worries and aspirations remain timeless.
📘 Vita Nostra by Sergey Dyachenko, Marina Dyachenko Fantasy | ★★★★½ (4.5/5) A mind-bending novel about a young woman's entrance into a mysterious institute where reality and language twist into something far beyond comprehension. Review: I can't explain what this book did to my brain—Stockholm syndrome comes close. Click 'keep reading' for the full list and StoryGraph links.
📙 Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan Epic Fantasy | ★★★★☆ (4/5) The overthrow of a corrupt monarchy sets off a revolution in a world of magic-wielding powder mages and political intrigue. Review: Loved the world-building, but the women in this story come off quite flat.
📕 The Assassins of Thasalon by Lois McMaster Bujold Fantasy | ★★★★☆ (4/5) A retired sorcerer-turned-saint is called back into action when an assassination plot threatens the stability of his world. Review: I enjoyed the political intrigue and love a good comeuppance.
📗 Knot of Shadows by Lois McMaster Bujold Fantasy/Mystery | ★★★★☆ (4/5) An unconventional investigation unfolds in a world where magic and mystery intertwine, revealing deeper truths about life, death, and the spiritual realm. Review: This poignant story of vengeance and justice moved me to tears.
📘 The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman Fantasy | ★★★★¾ (4.75/5) A thief with a debt to a ruthless guild must navigate a world full of danger, including goblins, witches, and an epic war, to survive. Review: I loved this book—the tone, the worldbuilding, and the characters, whom I am now completely in love with.
📙 Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree Fantasy | ★★★★☆ (4/5) A wounded mercenary finds herself stuck in a sleepy seaside town and unexpectedly drawn into the warmth of a local bookshop, where new adventures await. Review: Cozy, heartwarming, and sweet in all the right ways.
📕 The Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden Historical Fiction | ★★★☆☆ (3/5) A chilling tale set during World War I, blending the supernatural with a soldier's haunting experiences in the trenches. Review: A solid read, but it was a book-reader mismatch because I wanted more fantasy.
📗 The Do-Over by Lynn Painter Romantic Comedy | ★★★☆☆ (3/5) A woman gets the chance to relive Valentine's Day over and over, as she tries to fix her love life and face her fears about commitment. Review: Light and entertaining but the romance didn't stand out for me.
📘 White Cat by Holly Black Urban Fantasy | ★★★½☆ (3.5/5) In a world where magic is forbidden, Cassel discovers his family's darkest secrets and grapples with the consequences of his own powers. Review: I've had my fill of Cassel and his twisted family dynamics.

Des scientifiques étudient une espèce côtière décimée par la tempête Fiona
See on Scoop.it - EntomoScience

Epstein allegedly sexually assaulted multiple teenage girls. Some of his victims were as young as 14 years old, prosecutors have said. He committed the crimes at his homes in Manhattan; Palm Beach, Florida; and his private island near St. Thomas.
In 2019, federal prosecutors charged him with one count of sex trafficking conspiracy and one count of sex trafficking with underage females. Epstein died by suicide in his Manhattan jail cell about a month after being arrested, and the charges against him were thus dropped.
His partner Maxwell, who was also involved in the crimes, is now serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted in December 2021. She was accused of helping Epstein recruit and sexually abuse minor girls.

“I like you. I caused you a lot of pain and a lot of grief and- and I almost killed you. And I prayed, man. I prayed to God. I said, “God, please, dear God, don’t let anything happen to her 'cause I love her so much, and I’ll do anything you say, God.” And, man, I don’t even believe in him, you know? But I mean, it doesn’t matter! We protect ourselves. So, when you talk about ethics and values and honesty... and I’m a nice guy and you’re a nice guy and- and... this and that, you know. I mean, it just doesn’t matter. Nobody cares. Nobody has the time to be vulnerable to each other. So, we just go on...”
