Exhibit: "The Bell Jars: Lyman Conservatory and Sylvia Plath’s Botanical Imagination"
September 15, 2023 through June 28, 2024 at Smith College Botanical Gardens, Northampton, MA
"The Bell Jars: Lyman Conservatory and Sylvia Plath’s Botanical Imagination tells this story, shedding new light on Plath’s life and work while also examining the power of interspecies encounters between people and plants. Using archival materials and Plath’s literary work as a guide, this exhibit invites visitors to inhabit Lyman as Plath once did. Cross-pollinating the humanities and natural sciences, we hope to examine Plath’s botanical imagination and Lyman’s role in cultivating it."

As U.S. senators prepare to vote on a bipartisan bill proponent say will accelerate the development and commercialization of advanced nuclear reactor technologies, the Union of Concerned Scientists warned Monday that the legislation would increase the chances of a "catastrophic" meltdown by weakening the Nuclear Regulatory Commission—an agency already ridden by conflicts of interest.
Upper chamber lawmakers are expected to vote this week on the Accelerating Deployment of Versatile, Advanced Nuclear for Clean Energy (ADVANCE) Act, introduced last year by Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and passed by the House of Representatives in a 365-36 vote on February 28.
Proponents of the legislation argue it will facilitate U.S. nuclear leadership, develop and deploy new reactor technology, preserve existing nuclear energy, and more.
However, critics including the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) argue that the bill threatens the independence of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), some of whose officials have long been criticized for their dangerously close ties to the industry they regulate. Additionally, NRC advisers have been accused of undisclosed conflicts of interest.
"It's extremely disappointing that, without any meaningful debate, Congress is about to erase 50 years of independent nuclear safety oversight by changing the NRC's mission to not only protect public health and safety but also to protect the financial health of the industry and its investors," UCS director of nuclear power safety Edwin Lyman said in a statement Monday.
"Just as lax regulation by the [Federal Aviation Administration]—an agency already burdened by conflicts of interests—can lead to a catastrophic failure of an aircraft, a compromised NRC could lead to a catastrophic reactor meltdown impacting an entire region for a generation," he continued.
"Make no mistake: This is not about making the reactor licensing process more efficient, but about weakening safety and security oversight across the board, a long-standing industry goal," Lyman contended. "The change to the NRC's mission effectively directs the agency to enforce only the bare minimum level of regulation at every facility it oversees across the United States."
"Passage of this legislation will only increase the danger to people already living downwind of nuclear facilities from a severe accident or terrorist attack, and it will make it even more difficult for communities to prevent risky, experimental reactors from being sited in their midst," he added.

HARRIET STRONG
I selected Harriet Williams Russell Strong as the topic of the blog because she was an amazing person. She has a strong connection with water conservation as she created a system for water storage and flood control. Also she is an important figure in the Whittier family.
She was born in Buffalo, New York, on July 23, 1844. In 1852, her father moved her family west to California. Once again, Harriet’s family moved in 1861 to Carson City, Nevada, where she met her future husband. She married Charles Lyman Strong at the age of nineteen, this pair bought 320 acres of land from Pio Pico, the last Mexican governor of California, in 1867. They built a house on the ranch, but after some time Charles became bored and tried to start a new mining business. Regrettably, he failed and made a huge debt that lend to his suicide in 1883. Even though all of this Harriet continued her life, raising her 4 daughters, and even accomplished a number of amazing things.
She became interested in ways to irrigate dry land, while living in her property “Rancho del Fuerte”. In search of a stable crop, Harriet came upon walnuts. Walnuts require constant moisture in order to thrive so she designed an irrigation system for her walnut grove. By 1887, her walnuts began to flourish and, at 25 miles long, became the largest in the county, earning her the moniker “Walnut Queen”. Also in this year she patented her invention of a system of dams and reservoirs for water storage and flood control. In 1917, she went before the Congress and presented a plant that she had designed to dam the Colorado River.
She made a lot of impact in agriculture. That much, that her irrigation and conservation inventions allowed walnuts to flourish in the semi.arid Southern California soil. In addition, Strong advocated for water conservation and women’s rights all of her life, Sadly, on a trip back to her ranch in September in 1936, Harriet Russell Strong was involved in a fatal car accident. In 1935, the Hoover Dam was completed using some of Strong’s ideas that she presented in the Congress years before. In 2001, Strong was elected to the National’s Women Hall of Fame.
There exist some connections between Strong’s inventions and nowadays water conservation. Her system “dams and reservoirs” makes some plants grow a lot and it makes it easier to plant onto semi-dry lands. And we use it for the growing of different plants only because we have more technology than before and that makes better opportunities to create things. Also the way that she stores water is a bit similar with the drip irrigation system, the differences are that she’s were located in ways that the water will go to the plants until needed and the current one is that this one goes to the roots with the help of a plastic tube.
In conclusion, Harriet Strong was an astounding woman that fought with all her might not only for water conservation but also for the rights for womens. She invented a system that helped a lot in her time and ours. The government used her ideas to improve agriculture. These days, humans created new ways for water conservation and storage but we still use in some parts of the world her system. And until the day she died she went with her beliefs.

Lyman Estate Greenhouses in Waltham, Massachusetts The rest of the Lyman Estate can be visited once a month for a small fee, but you should know that the true belle of the ball is free to everyone. From the parking lot take a left and enter the greenhouses. The greenhouses at Lyman Estate are some of the oldest ones left in the country, and though it's not officially on the map, you can visit Theodore Lyman's first attempt at horticulture, the bark-pit greenhouse from 1793. Since then, he and his family have added different structures: a grape house in 1804; a place for growing camellias in 1820; an old sales house in 1840; and an orchid house in 1930. You can still see all the old heating pipes and water tanks, giving the place a perfectly picturesque vintage look. Today, the greenhouses are still functional and grow everything from succulents to pomegranates to pineapples, to the orchids and air plants you can purchase at the end of your visit. Make sure to bring a camera! https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/lyman-estate-greenhouses

Every November the Botanic Garden has a Chrysanthemum show for two weeks. Because I have class in the Lyman Plant House, my class got to be among the first to see this years spectacular display. I also went again when I had more time with my friend Catherine, and took my camera to get some cool shots of the amazing variety of mums.

Celebration 2021 and Terrarium Making
Compared to my typical week, this week was very academically relaxed. The explanation here is that two of my main classes didn’t have their typical weekly assignment due this week. (You can read about my current classes here). After my hectic week last week where half of my time was devoted to working on the prototype for my software engineering project, this was a welcome break of sorts. With that being said, it’s also a stressful week due to course registration challenges. To read more about course registration, click here. In this post, I’ll be sharing a little bit about what I did for fun this week. (In all honesty though, while I don’t always want to be doing homework, I do enjoy academics more than most people).
On Thursday night, I attended the 30th annual Celebration. Celebration is a collection of student performances with the express purpose of celebrating queer identities. It takes place in front of Wilson House in mid-November and started in response to some homophobic and transphobic incidents. During my first year, I performed at Celebration with the ukulele club which you read about here. I had more fun this year as it wasn’t nearly as cold and because I got to just enjoy the show with friends. This year there were performances by a capella groups, dance groups, and quad houses. The event is full of tradition and includes a candlelit vigil. Unrelated to the event itself, I also got the opportunity to meet my philosophy professor from last semester for the first time in person!
On Friday night, I attended an event at the plant house with a friend. (You can read an entire blog post about how our entire campus is a botanical garden here). The first activity was making terrariums. We started by adding a layer of gravel to little plastic fishbowls. I chose some blue and green gravel, but it isn’t really visible in the final product. Next up was a sprinkling of charcoal that acts as a natural filter for the water. We then filled the fishbowl halfway with soil, moistened it with water, added our plants, and decorated it with pebbles. Finally, we covered the terrarium with plastic wrap, secured it with a rubber band, and poked a few holes.
Afterwards we made ginger tea! I also got some hibiscus and peppermint teas for later. I was really excited about the ginger tea because I remembered really liking it during my first year when I visited for my first-year seminar. In addition to tea, there was baked brie and an awesome cheese board with nice cheeses from my home state of Vermont! The other main activity was a scavenger hunt, which we actually didn’t participate in.

which acnh villagers would mdzs characters like best? ruby and dotty sound like easy answers to lwj's dreamies, but who'd appreciate coco?actually, which personality types do zyx (meaning you) and dbd characters like?
all villagers are just a combo of animal, personality, and hobbies, but it's their interaction w other villagers and your day-to-days and a player's projection that gives them life
(why i have an irrational hatred towards wart jr., i'm only tolerating him on my island until i get his portrait then i'm shipping him off to my friend)
(this little plague ruined my park in acnl by planting his home right behind mine. literally, only a buttcrack's worth of space and he STILL manages to ruin everything. and had the gall to get uppity about the neighborhood that he destroyed)
(also frobert has invaded my ww town, and i forgot what he did but i wanted frobert the probert dead)
(with the way my houses are spaced out in nh and the fact you actually get a choice, there aren't many conflicts between my villagers, but my friend fucking hated baabara bc that bitch made every one of her villagers cry, and she couldn't kick her out bc her boyfriend that shared the island loved that mean ole bitch lmao)
(i said i was gonna share my island w verm bf, but he knew before i did that i was a tyrant and he'd rather wait for his own switch and own island, but i spent over 24 hrs w three different map planners to sculpt his desired wizarding enclave ; - ;)
=
(i'm almost willing to pay real people money for tiansheng, fuck all those people and their fucking shino and sasha)
=
let's say this is a combo of dbd/college au lol, and i'll go over the characters given most screen time
=
zyx: you can pry kiki and dobie from her cold dead hands. cranky villagers are the funniest, and then jocks, and then normals. says she goes dreamie hunting (cats and wolves), but gives up at the sight of a villager that makes her laugh (benedict and his little face). hurts her feelings to think about villagers not having homes, but is the first to say "EW NO" when on a mystery island. stinky is a rising favorite. somehow has a bunch of chickens on her island without meaning to??
(zyx's juniors - sa runyi: soleil, likes a sassy girl; li shanghui: lionel, thinks he's well-behaved; yan xichao: jitters, looks haunted and down for fun)
zxz: cannot stand snooty or smugs. he's the guy that got raymond and marshal (at different times) and bonks them w his net. loves a good jock, sisterly, lazy, or normal type, just uncomplicated folk. most orderly island of everyone. bonus points if they have a cute little smile. he loves lyman bc that's one of the villagers he overheard zyx say "EW FUCK I'M LEAVING" to. and of course he has drago and phoebe (longlei and yueling)
(zxz's juniors - jiu liwen: barold, he's relaxed and weird-cute; zhao xiucheng: merengue, bc she's cute-cute and sweet-natured)
lwj: again, i think he's a c'est la vie player, gearing more towards tiny, prey-type villagers. there are preferences but he's not going to chase anyone out to make room. keeping it mostly unterraformed, just minor adjustments to fit infrastructure for traversing the island. villagers come and go on their time (once he learns of wwx's dogphobia, he will deny them residence on his island w a heavy heart). it's just fortuitous that dotty hasn't asked to leave yet. finds cole relaxing, likes to sit w him once the sit reaction is there. coco has asked to leave, but he said no every time until...
wwx: he'd appreciate coco. in fact, he likes all the weird looking villagers (and not just basic bitch weirdos like pietro, we're going after the tier 4 and below weirdos and coco is the only tier 1), but no dogs/wolves. he gets gifted coco by lwj when he's ready for her (wwx is always fucking with his island and villager composition, but he also likes them going to friends and other islands instead of back to the void). another one he has a soft spot for is hopkins (segue: also wwx is the only person here that thinks zipper t is hilarious and not creepy). he manages to get all the hybrids first, caught the dupe trick asap
jc: this is the only place he can drown in dogs. between him and jzx (good), they have a good amount of dogs and wolves that they can have a civil conversation when jc has to accompany jyl to visit the jins. he also has a bunch of frogs (henry has a little spot of honor at the beautiful lake on his island). found kyle himself, will never admit how happy he was that wwx gave him butch (wwx got stuck w butch as one of the mandatory move-ins)
jzx: again, dogs and wolves. starting villager mac, best bud forever. he has a winner's luck w mystery islands. fang, whitney, audie; lucky, goldie, cherry - jzx is privileged irl and privileged in animal crossing. everyone on his island is spread apart (they all have lavish yards and shit) so that they can't argue with one another bc our king hates conflict resolution. judy lives there until he can muster the guts to talk to jyl like a normal guy and gift her
lqy: she has a smattering of different villagers, has dreamies (pudge bc his little face invokes a bit of necessary schadenfreude to survive her peers irl), but doesn't feel it's necessary to put in real manhours into hunting them down. diligently breeds flowers without time travel, is the second to get all hybrids after wwx ("come get your non-cheater flowers here!"). grows to love her villagers as they live on her island, hazel is the queen

Auto ordnance 1927 schematic
Auto ordnance 1927 schematic serial number#
Auto ordnance 1927 schematic professional#
The Cutts compensator was retained on all military A-O 1928A1 models throughout production. Thus, a low numbered Auto-Ordnance 1928 model was manufactured at the same time period a mid-range number Savage gun. The reason is that the Savage factory began manufacturing the guns approximately eighteen months before Auto-Ordnance.
Auto ordnance 1927 schematic serial number#
Note while the “L” sight and smooth barrel began to appear on mid-range serial number Savage 1928’s they appeared on lower numbered Auto-Ordnance, Bridgeport guns. Even after the smooth barrels began to be fitted, the finned style barrels continued to sporadically appear through the entire serial number range until the end of production. As with the rear sights there was no defining line on the type of barrel that was installed on any particular serial number range on Auto-Ordnance Thompsons. In early production the finned barrel was still fitted on the Auto-Ordnance, Bridgeport guns, but was eventually replaced by the easier to manufacture, smooth barrel that began to appear at the 85,000 serial number range. However, there was no defining line where the use of the Lyman adjustable sight was discontinued, as they continued to appear sporadically throughout the entire range of serial numbers. On the Auto-Ordnance, Bridgeport produced Thompsons the “L” style rear sight began to appear on guns at approximately the 80,000 serial number range. The parts that were manufactured in house by Auto-Ordnance were stamped with the letters AO or AOC.Īs production continued the Auto-Ordnance Thompsons, like the Savage manufactured guns, also began to be fitted with the simple stamped fixed “L” style aperture rear sight. There were many Savage and other subcontractor manufactured parts used to assemble the guns produced at the Auto-Ordnance plant. The early manufacture Auto-Ordnance, Bridgeport guns, like their Savage counterparts, were fitted with the finned barrel and the adjustable Lyman rear sight. A similar AO prefix serial number was applied to the rear of the trigger frame. The letters AO preceding the weapon’s serial number on the left side of the M1928A1 model’s receiver will easily identify an M1928A1 Thompson that was produced in the Auto-Ordnance’s Bridgeport, Connecticut plant. The 1928A1 Thompson Submachine Guns being produced at Auto-Ordnance’s Bridgeport plant were identical mechanically and in appearance to those being made by Savage in Utica, New York. As a result, the Auto-Ordnance Corporation opened their own factory in 1941 to help fill the Ordnance Department’s requirements for the weapon. Due to the complex construction of the Thompson, Savage had a difficult time keeping up with the ever-increasing demand. Best Things to Do in New London, CT
Limiting New London, CT to ten top things to do is rather hard in this town known for its history, arts, and scenery. New London is one of the earliest English settlements in Connecticut, being established in 1649. New London was long considered to have the best deep water port on Long Island Sound, therefore, having Naval and Coast Guard bases up to the present day. New London was the home of famed playwright Eugene O’Neill and has sizeable art offerings including the Eugene O’Neill Theater, the Garde Arts Center, the Hygienic Museum, and more. New London is also the home of one of the top colleges in the United States, Connecticut College. Keeping all this in mind, let’s look at some of the best offerings for things to visit and do in New London.
The Lyman Allyn Art Museum
The Lyman Allyn Art Museum is housed in an impressive building that was commissioned by Harriet Upson Allyn in memory of her father Lyman who was a prominent shipping merchant in the area. The museum houses many paintings from the Hudson River School who were a group of American landscape painters in the early 19th century. Their scenic canvases depicting certain vistas of the Hudson River Valley are incredibly awe-inspiring and fantastic. This truly American aspect of art is housed at Lyman Allyn as well as other paintings and art including an impressive collection of American 18th-century silver and furniture. Winslow Ames was the famed curator of the museum for many years and he amassed an impressive collection of paintings and other works whose focus was largely the 16th through 19th centuries in European and American art. Included in your visit, one should stop by the Deshon-Allyn House, a historical home located on the museum’s site built in Federal style and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Connecticut College Arboretum
Located next to the Lyman Allyn Museum on Route 32 is Connecticut College which houses the Connecticut College Arboretum. Founded in 1931, the Arboretum hosts several different horticultural collections including the Native Plant Collection, the oldest collection that displays plants, trees, and shrubs native to Northeastern North America and the Connecticut Shoreline; the Caroline Black Garden which contains a collection of plants, trees, shrubs and other flora from around the globe; the Lincoln and Lillian Dauby Gries Conifer Collection which displays local trees and shrubs; the Nancy Moss Fine Native Azalea Garden which contains several species of natural and hybrid flowers, and more. The Arboretum runs guided tours of several of the collections. Additionally, the Arboretum holds an Arbo-Fest twice a year in the spring and fall which includes music.
Ocean Beach Park
Ocean Beach Park is an excursion-for-all founded in 1940 after the hurricane of 1938 devastated New London’s beaches and buildings along the shore. The Park has a half-mile beach with a host of attractions for people of all ages. There is a nature trail to hike, an enclave of old-time amusement rides, an arcade where you can win prizes, an Olympic-sized pool, a mini-golf course, a snack area, a gift shop, and more. Ocean Beach is a fabulous venue for weddings and has seasonal evening time entertainment.

House of the Dragon Gets its First Lannister, Signaling an Epic Early Battle
https://ift.tt/3uc8V4Z
The rains of Castamere shall soon weep o’er the hall that is House of the Dragon. That’s because HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series has just cast some interesting new characters, some of whom notably bear the Lannister surname, indicating a deviously game-changing presence. Indeed, with the prequel set to showcase the build-up to a historically protracted bit of royal Targaryen infighting known as the Dance of the Dragons, House Lannister still has a role to play, even some 200 years before the events of the main series.
As officially announced, House of the Dragon has added characters Ser Harwin “Breakbones” Strong (Ryan Corr), Lord Jason Lannister/Tyland Lannister (Jefferson Hall), Grand Maester Mellos (David Horovitch), Ser Harrold Westerling (Graham McTavish), Larys Strong (Matthew Needham), Lord Lyman Beesbury (Bill Patterson) and Lord Lyonel Strong (Gavin Spokes). Yet, amongst the group, Hall’s Lannister presence immediately raises a red, lion-emblazoned flag, seeing as it confirms the presence of the most sinister, habitually-backstabbing family in Westeros—which is saying something. Yet, the casting is especially notable, since it will have the actor in the dual duty of playing both Jason and his twin brother Tyland, the latter of whom, officially described as “a crafty and calculating politician,” will live up to the family’s reputation for being a conniving catalyst for war.
HBO
HBO
Indeed, while the series is set several generations before the beheading of Ned Stark, the Red Wedding, the sacking of Highgarden, and other infamously imperious examples from the horrendous house’s proverbial greatest hits album, George R.R. Martin’s literary lore—outside the main A Song of Ice and Fire Novels—points to a significant Lannister presence that shapes the overall events of House of the Dragon, specifically regarding an early moment in the Dance of the Dragons war, the Battle at the Red Fork. During this period, Jason Lannister is the Lord of Casterly Rock and, despite being a relatively young man, is the head of the family. Yet, he’s a somewhat benign figure, who’s simply living the typical life of a Westerosi aristocrat, married to Lady Johanna of House Westerling, with five daughters and a son (not counting the obligatory bastards, obviously). Thus, in a fate not typically dealt to a Lannister, Jason is destined to find his house thrust into war due to circumstances not of his own doing. Moreover, he’ll fatefully find himself on the front lines of the aforementioned battle, which will shape the fate of the family for generations to come.
Said circumstances stem from twin brother Tyland, who’s indicatively nicknamed “the Hooded Hand.” This role will have Hall performing more in line with the kind of manipulative, unrepentantly-covetous Lannister family members we know, such as Tywin, Jaime and Cersei. Pertinently, the ambitious Tyland has risen in the ranks of Westeros to serve as Master of Ships for King Viserys I (Paddy Considine); a position from which he will surreptitiously plant the seeds of an eventual civil war in the minds of would-be supporters of Aegon II Targaryen to supplant the lawful royal succession of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), who, as youths, the two brothers once attempted to woo to no success. In fact, Martin’s lore chronicles Tyland’s deceitful rise to Master of Coin to even becoming Hand of the King.
At this point, we are going to risk some potential show spoilers (notwithstanding any alterations to Martin’s lore), avoiding the extensively egregious ones, specifically when getting back to Lannister household head Jason. That’s because, upon the eventual Dance of the Dragons, Tyland’s machinations resulted in him being Master of Coin to the throne-usurping Aegon II, a position that automatically forced House Lannister as a whole to back the Greens, the side that—represented by a green version of the Targaryen’s three-headed dragon—went against Rhaenyra’s lawfully-backed rise, with her supporters dubbed the Blacks. For Jason, this will result in him having to lead a battle that will prove watershed—both figuratively and literally—for the war in the Battle at the Red Folk, tasked with braving an obstructive river, using costly strategies against enemies from the Western Riverlands in their native homeland that, despite their success, went against Sun Tzu’s fundamental lesson on terrain.

Game of Thrones: George R.R. Martin Admits He Should Have Stayed Ahead with the Books
By Joseph Baxter
On an interesting sidenote, Jason/Tyland actor Jefferson Hall is actually a returning alumnus of the Game of Thrones universe from very early on. He played the two-episode-spanning Season 1 role of a knight representing House Arryn, named Hugh of the Vale. The role, while intrinsically minor, ended up with a brutally memorable climax in Episode 4, “Cripples, Bastards and Broken Things,” when he faced the Mountain, Gregor Clegane, in the Hand’s Tourney. Putting it delicately, the tilt did not go in his favor, and the not-so-delicate end result was the Mountain’s lance being broken off into Hugh’s throat, yielding a slow, hard-to-watch, blood-spewing death. It was a crucial early moment for the show that further signaled its unremittingly brutal tone. The actor has since put in a memorable run on History’s Vikings, appeared in FX on Hulu miniseries Devs, was pit against Tom Hardy on FX’s Taboo (as seen in the title image), and even appeared on the big screen in director Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. While Hall won’t run afoul of the Mountain again, his impact on House of the Dragon stands to be monumental this time around.

Regardless, House of the Dragon’s arrival of the Lannister family further forges connections to the story DNA of Game of Thrones, which it will certainly need in order to recapture the global fandom that scattered away since the main show’s 2019 conclusion—which many still qualify as controversially disappointing. Auspiciously, the prequel is partly under the purview of franchise royalty in Miguel Sapochnik, who shares showrunner duties with Ryan Condal, both of whom are executive producers alongside George R.R. Martin and Vince Gerardis. The 10-episode-ordered inaugural season is scheduled to hit HBO sometime in 2022.

I have the best job ever!
As I mentioned before, I’m working in Admissions giving tours this summer as well as working with College Relations doing social media work (such as writing this blog!) for most of the summer! I LOVE giving tours––telling prospective students and their families about why I love Smith and all of the amazing opportunities and resources here is so rewarding. Another great part of my job is taking pictures of fun places on campus. My coworker Minji is running the Smith College Instagram this summer (follow @smithcollege!! ), so when we’re not giving tours we go hang out and take pictures in amazing spots on campus. Here are some of the places we visited in the past week:
The boathouse and dock at Paradise Pond!
(photo id: brown boathouse to left and pond with trees in the background to the right, all underneath a blue sky with wispy clouds)
The Lyman Plant Conservatory!
(photo id: profile of me in a light blue romper holding my phone with a vague smile on my face, surrounded by and looking up at plants in our plant house!)
Beautifully decorated bathrooms in the downstairs of the Museum of Art!
(photo id: mirror selfie in a bathroom of me in a colorful dress in front of four blue sinks in a white counter and painted blue and white tiles above and around me)
(photo id: bathroom corner with a mirror and sinks to the right and painted blue tile wall to the left)
Stay tuned for more pretty pictures! Our campus is amazing, and I’m truly thriving!
