5/8/2025 - Lyle in Cube Sector
A charming smaller-scale Metroidvania by the creator of Corn Kidz 64, my favorite game I played last year. It was made in 2006 and looks and handles pretty nicely for a game made by one person that early on. It's got a neat central gameplay gimmick, being that you have to combat and platform around by picking up and tossing cubes found throughout the environment, a bit like Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA). It's a simple idea but the game finds many ways to expand on it and built off the core mechanic with power-ups scattered around the map, the primary ones being the ability to create your own cubes and use them to double jump, and then one of the last upgrades in the game effectively being a moonjump cheat.
The game does have some rough edges though, the primary one being the lack of save or checkpoints anywhere in the game. The game autosaves at every upgrade you get and you can save and quit anytime, but you'll always restart at the very beginning of the map. Warps can be unlocked, but only three specific ones in the whole map, none of which are very close to any of the three bosses. Dying and backtracking to them can be pretty annoying, especially with the gauntlet hall before the final boss.
Still, the map is small enough and blocked passageways that require later abilities are pretty obvious, so traversing back through the map while exploring didn't feel like a major problem. Searching for secret collectibles was fun too, and there were a couple with neat little gameplay gimmicks, like one that required juggling a basketball into hoops with the cubes.

Lyle in Cube Sector (Windows, Bogosoft, 2006)
A Metroidvania in which all obtainable abilities are related to using cubes. You can download it here - open the .rar in e.g. 7-Zip.
The developer recently released his first game in over seventeen years, the excellent N64-style 3D platformer Corn Kidz 64.

Corn Kidz 64 also has some unused colour variants for Seve!
seve01b is the same as the blue variant but with a different shirt graphic that references Lyle in Cube Sector, another game Bogosoft made back in 2006.
seve01d is probably the most unique of them all, shame it never got used in the final game.
seve01 obviously wasn't meant to be used as it glitches up Seve's model, but interesting enough it has a slightly different crosshair design compared to the green variant

that eno quote reminded me of chiptunes. here's an estrayk chiptune from the "her numbness" amiga music disk, released in 2001
you might recognise it kinda, another of the series was used as the final area music in "Lyle in Cube Sector" back in the day
