There's only 2 things that scares Hugo, one is ladybirds (as is implied in the 'Day at the Park' chapter), and the other thing is...

Poli in his punk/goth phase, not normal punks/goths, just his son as a punk/goth. And Lydia's given up with telling her husband 'he's a teenager' and 'it's not surprising'.

Also Hugo does cling onto Lydia when he's near, so she's also given up with telling him to get off

(Slight talk about drugs/alcohol/CSA)

So I decided to draw out Polis family, and here it is (Poli is about 7 in the picture, hence his size)

Facts about them:

Sophia Smith (Polis biological mother)

- Used to work in an adult store, but after she birthed Poli, she went on to become an athlete

- She didn't want a child to look after, so after she gave birth, she ditched him at the hospital, and has never tried to visit her son and husband

- Has a few body piercings, which she got while she was high and/or drunk

Hugo Smith (Polis father)

- Has scars all over his body from his job

- Despite being a police officer, he frequently takes home the drugs he finds and uses them, along with alcohol

- He only remarried so he wouldn't have to raise Poli by himself, since he's on call 24/7 and barely home

- Whenever he is home, him and Lydia often get in arguments over how he treats his son and acts around him whilst drunk/high

- Much like his first wife, he also tried to ditch his son at the hospital, but since he's basically an exact replica of him, he didn't get far without a nurse telling him he forgot his child

Poli Smith

- He had a stuffed rabbit called Mr Snowball, and whenever he was anxious or overwhelmed, he would chew on one of his ears

- His step-mother is the only reason he managed to get diagnosed with ADD and epilepsy

- He is yet to tell his therapist about the SA he endured throughout his childhood from his father

- He only became a cop in order to prove to his father that he willingly chose to be a corrupted cop and that it's not in his genes to be a bad person

Lydia Smith (Polis step-mother)

- Despite her also being somewhat abusive towards Poli, she would occasionally stand up for him when his father got a bit too touchy with him

- She managed to find Sophia on a website, and she constantly sends pictures to her of her son and husband

- Whilst she disagreed with how Hugo was raising his son, she didn't do anything to change it because she didn't want it to end with Poli being left alone, nor alone with his father

(Just a bit of clarification for what's in the brackets) Since Sophia left the hospital straight away and they haven't seen each other since, her and Hugo are still married as neither of them have filed for a divorce, so Hugo is basically married to two people at the same time
