i dont know if there's even a ppop presence on tumblr but i do also want to promote ALAMAT, a 6-member idol boy group from the Philippines. Its members comprise of Taneo, Mo, Jao, Tomas, R-ji, and Alas. They debuted in 2021, and their creative direction centers on championing the Filipino identity and culture through their music.
sorry that ^ was a copypaste but it's a very useful and concise copypaste LOL but onto my own promo:
(note: also most of these videos have english subs!!)
(extra note bc this issue always pops up whenever locals encounter alamat: mo is always wearing black hairstyes bc he is blasian and not bc he is appropriating from black culture hdfjhdf)
youtube
KASMALA, the inverted Tagalog word for "strong" (malakas), is the MV that really did numbers on social media iirc. The video direction focused on the "human zoo" in the St. Louis' World Fair of 1904 (which included Filipinos specifically Igorots), and a general theme of anti-Filipino racism by white people (who are represented as ominous figures literally dressed in all white)
personal opinion: the music video is great but i personally think they have better songs, music-wise. and i'm going to give you an example of that by introducing you to my ALL-TIME FAVORITE ALAMAT SONG!!!
youtube
ILY ILY, a transliteration of "Ili-Ili Tulog Anay", incorporates the melody and lyrics of the Ilonggo lullaby it derives its title from. The MV and lyrics both work together to portray the experience of being an OFW/having an OFW parent. OFWs, or overseas Filipino workers, refer to Filipinos who go abroad in search of jobs that have better pay, so that they can remit money back to their families in the Philippines.
personal opinion: this is their best song THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG EVER OF ALL TIME and lyca gairanod is such a perfect singer for this. her ethereal crooning really gave me chills the first time i heard it UGH
youtube
DAYANG, the term for the wife of a Datu, is one of their most earworming songs ever. It's a gorgeous love song and what I would recommend to newbies if they want to get into alamat <3
personal opinion: The MV is kinda ass because it's just a super long extended ad for DITO PH (in terms of story and also bc they really missed out on doing a vid that drew more on culture esp bc dayang is a historical noble title and they used tausug words and designs for the graphics an the dance itself already incorporated pangasik dance which is also from the tausug people LIKEEE?? they've always promoted other cultures of the philippines i know they can do it but because of CAPITALISM--). But the song bangs so severely, as a pop enjoyer this is peak pop for me.
OH I ALMOST FORGOT DAGUNDONG
youtube
DAGUNDONG, a song basically recounting the colonial history of the Philippines from Spain to America, is just so fucking good you should watch/listen to it rn. There's EN subs don't worry you won't miss out on the context. This is colonial rage it's so satisfying I still remember where I was when they dropped this.
personal opinion: FOREVER OBSESSED WITH HOW THEY SAY "dahil puso mandirigma di papakutsa di papapugon" you guys have no idea how much i sing that line to myself sooo satisfying. Instant earworm this song i swear.
OK ONE LAST one last and i'm done. okay.
youtube
MAHARANI, a Sanskrit term for the wife of a Maharaja (translated as "great queen"), heavily features singkil, a Maranao dance which uses bamboo poles like tinikling does. The song also uses SEAsian instruments like kanun, gamelan, and gangsa. Also BINI's Jhoanna plays one of the main characters here!!!
personal opinion: this is their most pop-sounding song, which i think is slightly carried by the video i'm sorryyy. it's catchy though!! and i looove the part somewhere halfway where alas starts his verse, singing it in a more spoken-word way
___
okay 5 songs is. probably enough. this post is already kinda long shdfjskdff but yeah. pls check them out if you can hehe <3
also ppop idols are just really funny. there's no concept of an idol image so they just tweet shit. alamat jao gave out his genshin UID after a fan tweeted about having co-oped with him in genshin, and then after that he started answering questions with the hashtag "#canceljao" making a lot of magiliws (alamat fans) confused, and then he posted a classic iphone notes apology like this 😭
Tumblr media
i'll do a bini version after this my girls deserve more international hype. they occupy a more girlcrush pop genre but they're just as chaotic as alamat if not even more 😭 there are entire THREADS on twitter of them just being hilarious jdhfkshgf i love them so much
thanks for reading <3

Alamat ft. Lyca Gairanod,  “ILY ILY” This is such a satisfying fusion between traditional folk and modern rap. It's based on the Hiligaynon/Ilonggo (a Visayan language) lullaby Ili-ili Tulog Anay (Sleep a While, Little One—typically sung by an older sister or an aunt when the mother is not there), but spun into a call to wake up and smell the economy as it explains the parent’s absence. Structured around the folk tune, the song moves through several POVs over time, and is sung and rapped in several Filipino languages (the Eng subs indicate when they switch languages). And I feel that it speaks to a specifically Filipino phenomenon of parent-child separation—parents working in foreign countries to provide for their children, a common theme in our stories and movies. PS. The Filipino word for “bereaved” (from the English subs) is ulila, which is also the word for “orphaned”.

Buwan
Tumblr media
" I hope it's not too late for me 'Cause I'm bleeding so bad and you're my remedy"
- Jenny | Diwa Album by, Juan Karlos Labajo
TAPE 1 // SIDE A
Buwan; "Sa ilalim ng puting ilaw, sa dilaw na Buwan". The song most Filipinos know, a song sung in most karaoke parties, a song that caught the eye of Asia and most of the world. A song that left a dent of contribution to the OPM genre. Juan Karlos Labajo, a wildfire that was never extinguished.
Tumblr media
Born in Consolacion, Cebu, Philippines on February 5, 2001, Juan Karlos Labajo is a Filipino-German actor, singer, songwriter, guitarist, and television personality. As a child, he was raised by his mother Maylinda Labajo. Sadly, his father left them when he was still an infant. During his elementary years, Juan Karlos went to San Narciso School of Consolacion. It was tough for Juan Karlos going to school, due to his looks and appearance, he was bullied and teased. Outside school, it wasn't so different, since his family was in debt he had to collect and sell junk and put up with his abusive step-father. Twelve years later, on the 17th of November 2013, his mother dies due to pancreatic cancer and later lived with his Uncle Jovanni and Grandmother Erlinda in Manila. Growing up, Juan never knew his father, yet he longed for a father's love, especially after his mother passed away.
Tumblr media
TAPE 1 // SIDE B
A year after his mother passed away, JK auditioned for "The Voice Kids Philippines". For ABS-CBN's Voice Kids season 1 blind auditions, Labajo performed his own rendition of Adam Sandler's "Grow Old With You," which aired on June 7, 2014. Sarah Geronimo and Bamboo Maalac, both coaches, pressed and turned to select him for their respective teams. Juan Karlos had a choice of coaches thanks to the double selection. Despite Geronimo's invitation to perform as a guest star at her forthcoming performance, he chose Coach Bamboo.
Tumblr media
"The funniest child I've ever met," his new coach said.
After performing "Sway" during the live semi-finals held at the Newport Performing Arts Theatre in Resorts World Manila, he advanced to the four-person finals. Right after his competitors, Lyca Gairanod and Darren Espantoz, he received the third highest total of the semi-finalists all from the public votes.
Labajo sang The Beatles' "Yesterday" and Bruno Mars' "Runaway Baby" during the first and second rounds of the finals, respectively.
"You have the beauty, the charm, and the heart," stated Coach Lea Salonga. You've got a future in this field if you have those three"
"I see a singer, an artist, and possibly an actor", Coach Bamboo said in a similar tone.
Labajo performed a duet with Gary Valenciano in the final round of the competition, the lively tune "Eto Na Naman." He came in third place in the vote at the end of the competition. Following the conclusion of The Voice Kids Philippines' season 1.
Tumblr media
Labajo later joined Star Magic, ABS-CBN's training and management center, along with his three co-finalists in The Voice Kids. Labajo's debut production with Star Magic was the family drama series Hawak-Kamay onABS-CBN.
On August 15, 2014, he was seen alongsidethe cast of the show in a sneak peek. Lyca Gairanod, a fellow The Voice Kids finalist, joined him in the cast on August 22.
He's also appeared in Maalaala Mo Kaya, a Philippine drama anthology series.
"JK," Labajo's debut album, was released in August 2015. There are eight songs on the album, including a unique band version of "Para Sa 'Yo" and an acoustic rendition of "This Gravity." JK dedicates "Di Ka Man Lang Nagpaalam" to his late mother, and it is a particular song on the CD. He was the MYX Celebrity VJ for the month of October for the first time, which was his first time.
In May 2016, Labajo was a contestant on ABC-CBN's We Love OPM The Celebrity Sing-Offs, a Filipino reality music competition show that ran from May 14 to 17, July 2016.
On January 1 to 28, Labajo was Labajo was the MYX Celebrity VJ. This was his second time, as he was the first time in October 2015. On January 9, 2017, ABS-CBN's Love to Lastpremiered nationwide on television, and he made his first appearance as Lucas Noble, the son of Anton Noble IV and Grace Silverio-Noble, in the first episode.
Labajo's second album, "JKL," was released in select Astroplus and Astrovision outlets on February 6, 2017.
Tumblr media
His CD has eight tracks, including three original compositions: "Demonyo," "Forever," a wedding ballad, and "Move On," which he wrotewhile still in PBB.
TAPE 2 // SIDE A
JK announced in 2018 that he is establishing a band called after himself.
Tumblr media
In June 2018, he released his most succesful song, "Buwan," which is a soulful alternative rock song.
It was released on June 22, 2018, by MCA Music under the name Juan Karlos.
Tumblr media
The song went on to become one of the most popular OPM songs of 2018, earning song of the Year at the 2019 Myx Music Awards and the Awit Award for People's Voice Favorite Song at the 2019 Awit Awards.
"Buwan" gained a lot of attraction and was used as a musical challenge on social media platforms in the Philippines and even beyond.
TAPE 2 // SIDE B
Although, with a rough start in his childhood, Juan Karlos fought his way to where he is today. Juan Karlos still makes music until now. Underrated artist is what most people describe him today.
Diwa, his previously released album back in 2020, consists of ten songs. Most notably, track, Sampaguita, a duet with a featured artist, Glock-9, is about the struggles of being far from your loved ones and family.
Through his songs, he delivers his honest and soulful feelings towards society and human emotion. Most people may not recognize his songs, but that's what makes him unique from other OPM artists, he doesn't follow the same repeated formula for fame, but for his expression.
Tumblr media
As a aspiring singer-songwriter, I've always admired Juan Karlos for his uniqueness, vocal range, confidence, and determination. Underrated artist, yet, I believe that he makes a difference in the OPM genre.

Five Facts About Me?
1. I have an older brother, with whom I was named after
Yes! I actually do have an older brother-- his name is Mark Anthony. He is around 5 years older than me. My name, Mark Angelo, is derived from my older brother, since my parents wanted to have children with the same first initials.
Of course, with the both of us being named Mark, one would prompt, “Will the real “Mark Santos” please stand up?” Truth of the matter is-- we’re both Mark Santos in our own ways. To my friends, I am Mark-- to my brother’s friends, he is Mark. But for our family, I am referred to as “Angel”, while he is referred to as “Kuya Mark”.
I guess my brother is the real Mark Santos? 🤔
Tumblr media
2. I joined the Voice Kids & Tawag ng Tanghalan
Welp, time to let the cat out of the bag. Yes, I have joined the Voice Kids & Tawag ng Tanghalan before during the prime of my singing career in Junior High School.
I joined the first season of the Voice Kids back in 7th Grade (2014), where I was fortunate enough to get through the blind auditions and get selected by Coach Sarah to be in her team. It was a very fun & amazing experience, meeting a lot of talented kids my age, including super idol Darren Espanto & the grand champion herself, Lyca Gairanod. Unfortunately, I lost during the battle stages, but that’s alright, I learned a lot from that experience. 💟
youtube
Around two years later, I joined Tawag ng Tanghalan at TV Noontime Show “It’s Showtime”. There, my voice has significantly matured compared to my performance in The Voice Kids-- my voice has grown deeper & my music choice have branched out more. I was able to win daily winner against the contestants from Visayas & Mindanao, however, I was unable to beat the Defending Weekly Winner. That was alright though-- just being able to sing & show my passion to the world is more than enough prize for me.
youtube
Although sure, this is a fact that I am proud of-- it’s something I never flex or say out in the blue, since I don’t want to appear bigheaded & bragging about stuff like this. It was a pleasure showing my talent & passion for the world to see. Music & performance is my passion, and if it brings smile to people’s faces-- I’d love to sing forever & ever.
3. I have allergic rhinitis.
To be honest, sharing this fact doesn’t really bother me-- as if you’ve met me, there’s probably a chance that you’ve seen me sneeze & sneeze uncontrollably-- which is why, it’s not such a secret that I have allergic rhinitis.
Allergic rhinitis is an autoimmune disease that causes the nose to be inflamed when introduced to allergens like dust or pollen. In my case, I’m not really sure which allergens really trigger my rhinitis-- honestly, my sneezing episodes just happen randomly at times. Which is why-- if ever you see me sneeze uncontrollably, please don’t assume that I have COVID-19.
Oh, and please offer me a tissue-- and I will treat you as my best friend forever.
Tumblr media
4. I have a pet Poodle named “Caramel” or “Tutoy” (whichever you’d like to call him)
Yes! I have a pet dog-- his name is Caramel. He is a Toy Poodle, meaning he’s much smaller than the other poodles that you may see in the wild. His name comes from the fact that his fur is a beautiful shade of brown-- Caramel-like.
He’s around 5-6 years old now, but he’s still active & plays around! He knows a few tricks like getting inside his dog house when commanded, he knows how to jump, stand up & hug hoomans’ legs, and he knows when to get inside our house for cover whenever it rains. Needless to say, he’s a very good & very smart boy. Perhaps you can teach an old dog new tricks 🤔
Though his name is Caramel-- we call him Tutoy, since he’s a boy, and it’s a pretty fun nickname! He responds to both names, so call him however you wish! Other nicknames would be woyoyoy, goodboi, dobby (when he’s bald), kulot (when he’s fluffy). He’s a good boi, he doesn’t bite. (Unless you trespass our house, in which case-- prepare a can of dog food as your casket)
Tumblr media
5. My favorite drink (as of the moment) is Cobra Green.
What is my source of fuel? Well...
As a college student, I’d like to be the most productive that I can-- and seeing as how I have a lot of responsibilities under my belt, I’ve always got to keep pushing & stay awake during long hours of study, work, & play. Which is why my favorite drink as of the moment is Cobra Green (no, this is not a paid sponsorship-- though, if you’re reading this Cobra, hit me up 😉).
Other people’s main source of Caffeine, especially my contemporaries is coffee-- and although it’s a good drink too, I just feel like it’s way inferior than my favorite sugary energy drink, since it causes me to have a bad stomach, it makes my mouth stink, and it just doesn’t provide enough energy as Cobra does for me.
Why the green flavor though? Well, technically, it’s called “Citrus Blast”, and that’s exactly how it tastes like-- it’s like drinking Calamansi/Dalandan juice, but with the added benefits of staying awake! The red one (Berry Blast) is good too though not my favorite, and please don’t talk to me about the Original flavor.
It’s ₱15 for one bottle, and goshdarn, is it worth it!
