Overwhelmed Amidst Havoc
After 43 years of sleeping the beautiful little monster has awaken. This beautiful little monster is located in the province of Batangas and has lake in its crater, considered as an active complex volcano. I am talking about the famous and one of a kind volcano in the world Taal Volcano, which is the only volcano that is not just surrounded by waters but also had it’s own lake on its crater but aside from its breathtaking view and unique characteristics, Taal is dangerous and can be very destructive.
On January 12, 2020 a very intense earthquakes were felt frequently on many places along the province of Batangas and its neighbor provinces as it erupted later on causing the ashes that came from its main crater spewed across CALABARZON, Metro Manila, and some parts of Central Luzon and Ilocos Region. Automatically the school classes, work schedules and flights were suspended in the affected area. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) subsequently issued an Alert Level 4, indicating that a hazardous explosive eruption is possible within hours to days.
My Experience
On that exact day, me and my family was very alert and always watching the news, we packed our personal needs such as clothes, water, and other things that we will need in case we should leave the house to evacuate. Those intense and few earthquakes with a terrible rumbling sounds that came from the mad awakened volcano, that I felt and hear at home during those days make me tremble and afraid that it is hard to sleep peacefully in my room. Our family pray for our safety and for others also. I can hear the sounds from the vehicles that passes by outside and the noises people makes that maybe evacuating or something. And my papa told us to never go outside if it isn’t necessary because of the ashes that came from the phreatomagmatic eruption of the Taal volcano.
How did I handle the situation?
Thanks to the presence of my family and faith in God I remained calm despite the fear that I am feeling. I pray for our safety and for others also especially to the families that lives very near on the volcano’s location, even though it isn’t obvious. I am always watching the news to keep myself oriented to the happenings. I didn’t go outside to breath some fresh air because on that very moment there is nothing but a toxic ash you can sniff on, and also my papa told me to not go outside for the same reason. But if you are a hard-headed human being and eager to go, just put on your mask, N95 etc., to prevent sniffing those ashes.
I hate to tell that even though we had some kind of emergency stuff and how to handle it during extreme situations such as earthquakes and all, I don’t want to say that I did it or something. Because honestly, we humans forget those things that we always practiced in the school, office etc., because some of us are easy to panic, do what our gut feeling tells us to do, some may have run or do something stupid due to adrenaline rush or just maybe because our mind is already preoccupied with that panic attack. It’s okay to feel extreme emotions, to be overwhelmed during and/or after a disaster or calamity, but it isn’t okay if your life is at risk. You can’t tell when will the disaster come. It is like death, an unexpected guest that doesn’t know how to knock at your door and just barge in to surprise you, that’s why we can’t tell when to prepare. But if the officials tell us to leave and/or evacuate then leave, go to a safe place. In order to survived, we just need to stay calm, be alert, be obedient, and open minded.

It’s only in loving one another we can protect each other: Palace
#PHnews: It’s only in loving one another we can protect each other: Palace
MANILA — As the Christian community celebrates Easter Sunday, Malacañang urged Filipinos to “love one another,” especially in these trying times that the country is fighting coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). “‘Love one another’ was what the Redeemer had taught the Christian world, and this is the most fitting time that we embrace and practice this teaching, that even the non-Christians and the agnostics can relate. For it is only in loving one another can we protect each other from this scourge of a disease,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement. Easter Sunday is deemed the most important day in the Catholic’s liturgical calendar as it commemorates the day Christians believe Jesus rose from the dead. Panelo hopes that everyone would enjoy a “meaningful and faithful” Easter Sunday. He said Christ’s resurrection “symbolizes the truism that after going through pain and suffering there will be healing, that after a storm a new dawn beckons, and that after this pandemic of a disease there is a new tomorrow that awaits us and the world.” “As we struggle to overcome the worst calamity we face as a nation, let us still thank the Almighty for sparing the rest of humanity who will, like the Phoenix, be reborn from ashes and build a new order of love and peace among mankind, coming from what it seems to be a spiritual cleansing that we are all undergoing,” Panelo said. Panelo was also confident that like Christ, the country would prevail over Covid-19 pandemic. “Christ has risen! So, will we rise from this tragedy that has befallen us,” he said. The Philippines has so far recorded 4,428 Covid-19 infections. Around 247 Covid-19 patients have died, while some 157 infected individuals have recovered from the disease. The entire Luzon was placed under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) until April 30 to curb the spread of Covid-19. ECQ was also imposed in several areas in Visayas and Mindanao that have confirmed Covid-19 cases. (PNA)

Prelate expects more people to observe Ash Wednesday in churches
#PHnews: Prelate expects more people to observe Ash Wednesday in churches
MANILA – An official of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Philippines (CBCP) is certain that many faithful will attend Ash Wednesday, the start of the Lenten Season.
Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara, Southwest Luzon Regional Representative of the CBCP, said they are happy with the recent decision of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) allowing 50 percent capacity for religious gatherings in areas under the general community quarantine which took effect on Monday.
“It means that many people will be able to attend our religious services. As we all know, we will be celebrating Ash Wednesday, and the Lenten Season begins. So filling up our churches to 50 percent is a good development, as more people will be able to participate in our religious services,” the Pasig bishop said in an interview with Church-run Radio Veritas on Tuesday.
Vergara added that the recommendation of the CBCP to sprinkle ashes on the head of the faithful will be implemented in the diocese.
Meanwhile, Fr. Jerome Secillano, executive director of the CBCP-Permanent Committee on Public Affairs (PCPA), said the celebration of Ash Wednesday reminds the people that they are mortal.
“Ash Wednesday reminds us of our mortality. Indeed, everything in life has an end. Even this pandemic will end,” he said in a statement.
He added that the occasion's significance is not just about death.
“But, returning to the Lord doesn't only mean dying. It also means conversion, turning once again to God who is lord of life,” the CBCP official added.
Secillano added that the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic will also remind the faithful to "find their way back to God and embrace Him more deeply and lovingly.”
Ash Wednesday marks the 40-day Lenten Season. (PNA)

Basilica del Sto. Niño friar offers prayer for Taal victims
#PHnews: Basilica del Sto. Niño friar offers prayer for Taal victims
CEBU CITY -- As state volcanologists expect more volcanic activity in Taal, Batangas, a member of the Augustinian religious community overseeing the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño’s security on Tuesday offered a prayer for the thousands of residents affected by the eruption.
“Touch our hearts and depths of our brethren that those who can help become ready to share their resources to those who are in need,” Fr. Aladdin Luzon, a member of the Order of St. Augustin, said in his prayer aired over radio.
Luzon further prayed that through the mercy of God, the people affected by the volcanic ash eruption in Taal may get back on their feet despite the adversities.
He said that God can be felt and experienced by victims of the catastrophe through the help of other people.
Fr. Socrates Saldua, in his homily during the 10 a.m. novena mass at the Basilica’s Pilgrim Center, reminded churchgoers that calamities may strike to remind humanity that there are things or events not under man’s control it.
“Mao na nga panagsahan ta og linog, buto sa bulkan aron makahibalo ta nga di nato kontrolado ning kalibutan mao na nga mag-ampo ta (That’s why we have occasional earthquake and volcanic eruption so that we would know that we are not in control of the earth and that the reason why we need to pray),” Saldua said.
Saldua, Archbishop Jose Palma’s episcopal vicar in far-north Cebu, also underscored the Roman Catholic’s religiosity as expressed in their deep faith and devotion to the Sto. Niño through dance prayers and other rituals unique from other religious denominations.
Meanwhile, Mayor Edgardo Labella said the city government is ready to help hundreds of individuals and families evacuated because due to the volcanic ashfall.
“We will have to wait and assess the situation. But we will help,” he said in a radio interview.
Labella said they are contemplating on deploying disaster officers to the affected areas to determine the kinds of assistance they can send to the calamity-stricken areas in Batangas.
On Sunday (Jan. 12), Taal volcano started spewing ashes and pyroclastic materials which forced residents nearby to evacuate. (PNA)
