Ben should be feeling like he’s on top of the world. He’s staying at a luxury villa in Ibiza with his best mates, coming off a big win and a goal for his country. He’s young, healthy, and successful. He should be enjoying life at the moment.
Instead, he just feels like shit.
He’s felt like shit from the moment you walked away from him at Wembley, declaring the end of your fake relationship. It felt like a knife to the gut when you left him standing there, unaware of what he did wrong, wanting so badly to chase after you but knowing he shouldn’t.
He sat through an entire, agonizingly long dinner full of people celebrating and congratulating him on the goal, and all he wanted was to pull out his phone and call you to make sure you were okay.
The next morning, Mason, Harvey, Tom and Woody practically dragged him to the airport and onto the private plane they’d booked weeks ago. It’s a rare week off for both Ben and Mason, so they wanted to make the most of it. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
In the past, a boys week in Ibiza was his idea of paradise. It meant days spent poolside catching up with the lads and relaxing before returning to his busy schedule. And the nights were usually dedicated to going to some swanky club and leaving with a hot girl.
This time, it’s been three days of their five-day holiday, and Ben hasn’t left the villa once. He’s been sulking in his bedroom half the time, and generally bringing down the mood even when he tries to force himself to have fun with the boys.
He’s sent you a few texts to no response, and he would’ve been genuinely concerned for your safety if it weren’t for the fact that he could still see your Instagram stories - specifically one of you out drinking with some coworkers, including a good-looking guy apparently named Matt, who Ben may or may not have stalked on social media. The bastard - who Ben’s never met - may only have three photos, none of which are particularly offensive, but Ben knows for a fact he doesn’t deserve you.
The morning of the fourth day, he comes out of his room around ten looking for something to eat for breakfast, which he’s slept through every other morning so far, and is instead served with what can only be described as an intervention.
All the guys are sat around the table, drinking coffee and staring him down as he trudges out in just his boxers - perks of a lads trip - still rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.
“You need to tell us what happened with you and Y/N,” Tom says firmly as soon as Ben sits down at the table and pours himself a cup of coffee.
He just groans and takes a long sip before answering. It’s way too early for this.
“I already told you, I kissed her in front of the cameras, then she got weird and ran off,” Ben repeats the exact same brief recap he gave them on the flight here. “I followed her out and she said she couldn’t pretend to date me anymore and that she needed space.”
“Yeah, we know that part,” Harvey says. “And I get that you’re disappointed she’s bailing on the PR thing-“
“I don’t give a fuck about that,” Ben interrupts, a bit dramatically clanking his mug down on the table. “Look, I’m sorry I’m bringing down the holiday vibe, but my best friend isn’t returning my calls and I’m worried about her.”
Although most of the people at this table could make a case for being Ben’s best friend, and under better circumstances would probably joke offense at his statement, there’s nothing but silence. They all know what you mean to Ben, the place that you occupy in his life and in his heart. It’s…different.
“She’s fine, mate,” Mason says softly after a minute. He’s always the calm, level-headed one in these situations, and although Ben is typically grateful for his presence, he feels white hot rage within himself right now.
“You talked to her?”
“She texted me back yesterday and said she’s alright and she’s just taking a beat,” Mason responds, speaking carefully as if he’s afraid of saying too much. “Look, I know you feel shitty because you and Y/N got into a fight and she’s not talking to you. But have you thought about why she might have ended this thing?”
Ben runs a hand over his face. “I told you, Mase, I have no bloody idea-“
“Just think about it, Ben,” Tom chimes in. “She agreed to be your fake girlfriend, basically giving up any chance of having her own dating life during that time. Then she gets upset and bails right after you kissed her for show, in front of a bunch of people?”
Ben’s chest tightens as he realizes what his friends are implying, but he immediately shakes his head. It’s ridiculous. There’s no way you, his best friend, have feelings for him.
“No,” he says simply. “That’s not…she doesn’t…she would’ve said something.”
“Why would she?” Harvey asks, raising an eyebrow. “It’s not like you’ve told her.”
Everyone goes silent again as all eyes fall on Ben, who just nearly choked on his coffee as he processed Harvey’s words.
“What are you-I’m not-“
“Mate, I say this because I care about you,” Harvey continues. “You need to get your head out of your arse and just admit that you’re in love with her already.”
Of course he loves you. His best friend since the age of six, his rock, his favourite person on the planet. He’s loved you since before he knew what love was.
Except he can’t be in love with you, because that kind of love ends. He’s seen it end, when his parents got divorced and when his friends have had devastating breakups. He’s seen people fall in love and fall out just as quickly. And that can’t be you and him. He can’t lose you.
“Harvey, it’s not like that,” Ben says quietly. “She’s…Y/N. She’s my best friend.”
“Yeah, but she’s always been more than that, hasn’t she?” Mason says. “I mean, the bond between you guys, it’s not like what you have with any of us, right?”
“Well, no, but-“
“When I first met you I thought you were already dating her,” Nathan admits. “I told Mase I’d never seen a guy so whipped and when he told me you weren’t together, I was shocked.”
“And you’ve hated all of her boyfriends,” Tom adds. “Even the nice ones.”
“They’ve all been dickheads,” Ben replies, though he knows that’s not entirely true.
“You two have always been more than friends,” Mason continues. “I love you, bro, but she literally took weeks off work to take care of you after you did your ACL. She moved in with you and drove you to every physio appointment until you were on your feet again. And then last year when you realized you were gonna be out for the World Cup and you felt like shit, she was the only person you would talk to. I think that’s when I knew for sure how you felt about her.”
Ben still remembers that night like it was yesterday - he was in the treatment room at Stamford Bridge, icing his leg, already knowing tomorrow’s scans would confirm what he felt the moment he landed wrong, and he was so upset about missing Qatar that he barely spoke when the coach and some of his teammates came to see him. And then he heard your voice in the hall, grilling the medical team to ensure he was receiving proper care, and he smiled for the first time since he limped off the pitch that night.
You ran in, pushing past Mason to wrap Ben up in a tight hug and tell him everything would be okay, and despite how terrible things were at the moment, he felt so at peace in your arms.
“Mason’s right,” Tom says sincerely. “And it’s probably why none of these girls you hook up with feel right. You’ve already got your heart somewhere else.”
Ben feels his head spinning as he replays every meaningless one night stand he’s had, how something had always been missing.
He thinks about how it feels when he sees you in the stands at the Bridge, especially when you’re wearing his kit, and the way just seeing you gives him the confidence to be a better player.
And, more importantly, how you make him a better person - how he’s constantly in awe of your career and how you help people, how it inspires him to try to do more to make the world a better place. How you’ve turned down expensive Christmas and birthday gifts from him every year and directed him to a charity worth donating to instead.
He thinks about how you’ve stood by his side all these years, even when he was a cocky kid coming up in the Premier League and when he’s been a bit of a dick, you’ve always kept him from straying too far from himself. Through all the injuries, through every win and loss, you’ve been there.
He thinks about how you literally agreed to this ridiculous, elaborate PR scheme just because he asked you to, sacrificing your own free time and privacy to help him out.
Finally, he thinks about how right it’s felt pretending to be your boyfriend. It’s been almost second nature holding your hand and telling people how wonderful you are. It felt as easy as breathing to kiss you, and though he knows he shouldn’t have done it in a room full of people, he can’t bring himself to regret it. Kissing you was pretty much the best moment of his life, which means seeing you walk away from him on the verge of tears minutes later was probably the worst.
But while he’s been beating himself up this entire holiday over the fact that he kissed you and the fact that he dragged you into this fake relationship, he now realizes that wasn’t his mistake.
The issue is that he should have done it a long time ago, and it should’ve been for real.
“Shit,” Ben mutters under his breath. “I’m in love with Y/N.”
“Finally, he admits it!” Harvey grins, patting Ben on the back firmly.
The rest of the boys grin and chime in with their agreement, but Ben is already rising from the table and pulling up flights on his phone.
“Where you going, mate?” Mason asks with a smug grin on his face.
“Home, I don’t want to wait until tomorrow,” Ben says with a nervous smile. “Wish me luck, boys.”
As he begins to jog back to his bedroom so he can quickly pack and get to the airport in time for the next flight, he hears Harvey call out from the kitchen.
“Don’t forget trousers!”

Chapter 01 | Baila Conmigo
“Bebé, no sé si habla' mucho español
Si entiende' cuando digo "Mi amor"
(...)
Bésame, solo una vez
Así tengo un motivo pa' volverte a ver”
“There’s no better cure for a broken heart than Gin Tonic and Spanish men.” Rebecca was wearing three different sunhats and every single beach robe she could find. They were sitting crossed legged in Sofie’s bedroom floor, packing for their upcoming trip. It was Rebecca’s idea, of course. She has spent every summer in Ibiza since she was old enough to get on a plane by herself, and has begged her best friend to come with her every year since. But Sofie had Thomas and they spent all the summers with his family in his hometown.
“I do like Gin Tonic.” Sofie giggled. “But no men on this trip. All I want from Ibiza is a suntan and a light hungover.”
“You should still pack some lingerie, just in case.”
They were leaving the next morning, with Chiara and Luisa meeting them at the airport. Out of their gigantic group of friends, they were the only ones single, so it was natural for the girls to feel responsible for Sofie. She had a lot to learn, they said. She got added to their private group chat, ‘single girls club’, the day after the breakup. Even now, a couple weeks later, she hadn’t felt lonely, not even for a minute.
“And you need new sunglasses.”
**
The anxiety only hit her when they landed. The realization of what she was doing. She was a free woman now, whatever that means. It started to feel like a big weight to carry, the sole responsibility of making herself happy. It was so easy to give that up before, in the name of love. Now she doesn’t know what to do with it.
“Let’s get mimosas, like, immediately!” Luisa was the most outgoing one in their little group, and not up for debate she was also the prettiest. Long wavy blonde hair, bambi blue eyes, greek goddess-like body. She was a natural leader. Her confidence made it easy to follow her, and that’s what Sofie decided to do.
“Yes, please!”
“The fact that I’m not wearing a bikini already is a crime.” Chiara was the youngest but still a lot more experienced in those adventures than Sofie. Chiara’s mother was a successful supermodel in the early 90’s and she inherited her mother’s best features. Straight brown hair, light tan skin. She was the fashionista of the group.
Rebecca was the more centered, mature, mother-like personality of the four. She had the best taste in music and always had a great new book recommendation. It seemed like she was always worried about something more important than everybody else. She was the smart one.
Sofie was the new girl, and had yet to discover her place in the entourage.
The girls rented a luxurious and isolated villa in Sant Josep. Four spacious bedrooms, an infinity pool and cozy patio were privileges their parents credit cards were able to pay. They all came from rich families, their friendship was as written in the stars as carefully planned by their mothers. They met on play dates when they were little kids. They had ballet and foreign language classes together. As teenages they learned how to lie to their parents together. They went to college together. Now, as brand new adults, they were learning how to be women together.
“Okay, what about this one?”
They were in the villa living room, after a few mimosas, choosing which pictures to post. That was an important part of the single’s business. It was crucial for your thirst traps to look as hot as possible yet tasteful and lady-like. According to Luisa, you want to look like a duchess and a slut.
“Yes, post it.”
Chiara then turned to Sofie. “Okay, so, our itinerary only starts tomorrow, but you want to let people know you’re in town.” They had plans for the next day, party with people Sofie never met and concerts of artists she never heard of. She tried not to show how uncultured and naive that made her feel. “You should post this one. And tag the village.” It was a pic of Sofie in a bikini, she was posing in front of the infinity pool. It was a milestone, really. Her first insta post as a single woman.
**
In the afternoon Rebecca decided to take Sofie on a walk.
“Let’s take it slow on the first day, maybe do some shopping.”
At that point everything sounded like a good idea. Sofie could feel her cheeks burning red with excitement. Ibiza was as beautiful and as interesting as expected. The streets were cloaked in flowers and vines. The sound of birds humming and the clashing waves in the distance made just walking around the island a magical and spiritual experience. They entered a number of small stores, smelling, touching and taking pictures of everything they saw. It’s always a good feeling to be a tourist in a beautiful place.
“This place looks nice.”
It was a bar, semi-open with a pitched bamboo roof, located right in front of the beach. The stone walls and greenery created a peaceful and inviting view. That, and the orange from the sunset on the horizon. Becca seemed to agree and without another word the girls entered the bar. They ordered local craft beers and tapas and sat down in silence for a few minutes to simply rest and enjoy the view. With the moonrise, the glow of fairy lights started to illuminate the bar.
“How devoted are you to that ‘no men’ rule?”
The girls were sitting facing each other on the table closest to the sea and Rebecca leaned over, almost whispering her question. Jazz music playing in the background and a bottle of beer in hand, Sofie frowned.
“We literally just got here. I would say pretty devoted.”
“Okay, well, look, it’s just those guys are totally checking us out.”
Sofie looked in the direction her friend’s eyes were aimed. Two boys, to be more precise. A brunette and a blonde, if Sofie had to describe.
“They’re cute…” They really were cute.
“Pick one!”
“What?”
“Pick one! I’ll take the other.” Rebecca winked.
“What did we just talk about?”
“Sorry, got distracted. They’re super cute. Sorry.”
“Also, the brunette.” Sofie giggled. The brunette looked older and charming, deep brown eyes– he was just her type.
“Oh my god, they’re coming over.”
It became obvious very quickly that the boys also took their pick, and it didn’t match theirs. The charming brunette looked head over heels for Rebecca, while the blonde one stared awkwardly at Sofie. Pedro and Pablo, they introduced themselves. Chip ‘n Dale, Sofie thought to herself. After only a few minutes Pedro and Rebecca’a chemistry was flooding the table. Their giggling and flirty stares started to become uncomfortable for the other two.
“Do you want to take a walk?” It was clear they got abandoned by their friends, so Sofie did the polite thing and offered Pablo a way out of that conversation. The boy looked like a deer caught in the headlights. He had beautiful eyes and Sofie blushed with the thought. The boy nodded in agreement.
“Are you sure?” Rebecca asked, partially worried she was being a bad friend and partially hopeful. Sofie almost rolled her eyes.
“Yes, pretty sure.”
**
“You’re a professional football player?”
“Yes.” Pablo laughed at the sound of shock in her voice. Sofie then stopped herself to stare at him for a second, examining his features. They were making small talk– how old are you; where are you from; what do you work with. His answer caught her off guard.
“I used to love football.” She said softly, smiling at herself. “When I was a kid my dad would take me to every single Benfica home game.”
“What happened?” Pablo frowned. “You don’t like it anymore?”
“My dad passed away.”
“Oh. Shit.” There was an awkward silence. “I’m so sorry.”
“It’s okay, really.” Sofie giggled at the boy’s scared look, she seemed it before and was already used to it. “It has been a while. It’s just, football was our thing, you know?”
“Do you miss it? Nevermind, that’s a stupid question!”
“No, no, it’s okay.” She had a hand on his shoulder. They have been walking for a few minutes and even though they were in an isolated part of the beach, they could hear distant edm music; very different from the sound of birds during the day. The moon was high in the sky at that point. “I do miss it. A lot. But it’s been a long time, and with every passing season there’s more to learn about the game. I don’t know how to go back into the loop.” She didn’t even know who he was, that’s how out of the loop’ she was.
“I guess you just do. If you wanted. I guess you just come back.”
He was right. She heard that before, from her therapist. Going back to doing the things she loved. Instead she decided to quit therapy and keep herself in the denial phase of grief. But Pablo was right. And he looked beautiful under the moonlight. His hair waving with the ocean breeze, his eyes shining brighter than the paper lanterns around them. She wanted to hold his hand. Her whole day felt like a fairytale after weeks of nightmares and she didn’t want to talk about her father or football anymore. She wanted to kiss him and end her day on a win. Later she would blame her overly confident behavior on the mimosas.
“Do you wanna go back to the villa with me?”

Take a hike around the Isle of Skye and maybe a dip in the small water ways if you're brave enough. See the beauty that Scotland has to offer. The night will end at a cottage for 2 with a chef catered meal and an overnight stay.
During the day, enjoy a walking tour of Haga Old Town in Gothenburg, Sweden and a small boat tour of some of the archipelago. End the night with dinner at family owned Familjen where the mood is cosy and the food is all local.
A long weekend in Monaco. Enjoy the comfort of the iconic Café de Paris, spending the afternoon pampered in its spa before heading to an opera. Michelin restaurants, beach sunsets, and ultimate luxury mark a perfect weekend.
Austria. Visit the lakeside alpine village of Hallstatt in the Alps and enjoy a picnic lunch via boat ride. Attend an Austrian Apple Strudel Cooking Class in the afternoon before venturing to Salzburg to tour Hohensalzburg Fortress. Dine at the restaurant atop and attend a night-time concert there while taking in the balcony view of the historic town of Salzach below, including the river and mountains.
A weekend in Positano, along Italy's soaring Amalfi Coast. This includes a private boat tour to the island of Capri.
Sunset watching on a private yacht off the Greek Islands in quiet and private location, followed by luxurious but relaxed dinner and champagne. (edited to be in-keeping with geographical constrictions. Send a follow up date acknowledging this if you wish to change it. ♥)
Jetset to Finland, spend the morning exploring the snowy forest on horseback, try your hand at ice fishing before enjoying lunch prepared over an open fire. Experience the excitement of an overnight husky or reindeer safari to chase down the northern lights and return to the lodge the next afternoon to wind down in one of the glass house igloos of Kakslauttanen resort and enjoy the spectacular sights with a warm hot chocolate and a decadent five course dessert degustation.

Laura is in Ibiza indeed for something else. She's a self-employed model. Brands collaborate with her to promote their products.
Therefore, unless the brand is a well-known brand that can afford a campaign, models have to do everything by themselves, including finding photographers and make-up artists. Now small brands like the ones she works with can't afford either a campaign or the cost of travelling for a model. That's why they don't push for abroad shoots as they try to keep costs down. Travelling to Ibiza and taking pictures for 3 different brands was indeed a choice. Laura recently followed a guy called Joe Serra, who's an entrepreneur and a provider of luxury holidays for footballers as well. Ruben Loftus Cheek happens to be in Ibiza right now and followed the same person last night. She also posts a video of a villa and secretly tagging Mario Stolaj, another entrepreneur of the same sort. Mario reposted that story. Mario knows Ruben as well, as shown on his profile (around November 2023.
